It depends on the province or territory. It's only a stat holiday in some of them.

pennmom , yes. Almost all businesses + gov't offices and banks, are closed on Victoria Day. Why doesn't Quebec celebrate Victoria Day? Hmm, I'll try my best to answer without going into much history. Quebec City is the oldest city in Canada, one of the first areas of Canada to be explored by Europeans (France; French-speaking citizens) -- Canada belonged to the King of France. The British Army defeated the French in Quebec (the Battle of The Plains of Abraham) and Quebec was then split into Upper Canada (now Ontario) and Lower Canada (Quebec). The province of Quebec has "special status" -- is more "independent" from the rest of the country and strives to maintain its unique (French) culture. They do have an official holiday that falls on the same day as Victoria Day does in the rest of the country named National Patriots Day. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Patriots%27_Day

kafinkee, I actually love history...most history, I love this kind where I learn about different cultures and the how's & whys, but some history lessons are still boring lol. I guess I love the kind of history where I learn how things originated, the backstory so to speak. In fact, if we go all the way back to dinosaurs and cavemen I'm all ears!

That diagram is out to lunch regarding Rome. The year given for Rome's founding is 753 BCE, and it went through prolonged periods of monarchy and republic before Julius Caesar overreached himself and got murdered (said murder precipitated civil war; the eventual outcome saw Octavian, nephew of Julius, take on the title of Augustus and become the first Roman Emperor).
In 395 the Roman Empire was divided into Western and Eastern. The Eastern Roman Empire (aka the Byzantine Empire) survived the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476, and continued for close to another millennium (it fell to the Ottomans in 1453).
Regarding Quebec... the term commonly used is "distinct society". This is an unpopular term in some areas of English Canada, given that there are many regions and peoples whose cultures have unique aspects and/or notable histories.
Ironic fact: Quebec isn't the only province with separatists. My own province, Alberta, also has separatists (for some bizarre reason they think a landlocked province that's a two-day drive from the nearest ocean can make a credible go of being an independent country).
Anyway, for those interested in a dramatized version of Queen Victoria's life, there's a TV series that might be on Netflix or PBS or wherever; it stars Jenna Coleman as Victoria. As historical dramas go, it's a bit soapish, but does show some of the grit and filth that Victoria's people lived in while she and Albert lived a lavish life.

Valkara , Happy Victoria Day! The chart is referring to the era of the "Roman Empire" only. From Wikipedia: "The history of the Roman Empire covers the history of ancient Rome from the fall of the Roman Republic in 27 BC until the abdication of Romulus Augustulus in AD 476 in the West, and the Fall of Constantinople in the East in AD 1453. Ancient Rome became a territorial empire while still a republic, but was then ruled by Roman emperors beginning with Augustus (r. 27 BC – 14 AD), becoming the Roman Empire following the death of the last republican dictator, the first emperor's adoptive father Julius Caesar." I've long found the Victorian Era to be very interesting, haven't seen that show, however; thanks for the tip. I've read a few books about Victoria and about that time in England (which made me happy I wasn't living there then!).

There's been no activity on this page for 16 months so I'm curious if there are any Canadians still here? And what province/territory you are from?
I'm from the sunshine coast in BC. Flower Blooming

orionsrose, We actually have quite a few Canadians in the woods! PS: you can add a flag of your country in your profile settings so if you look at members mini profiles to the left of their post you can see where members are from (if they added their flag, it's optional)

I'm in Central Alberta.
I try not to bring my bad political moods here. I save it for Facebook and the political threads on my other gaming forums.
