Jo, lurkercat, I have tried several different genres and found that I actually enjoy things I didn't think I'd like since becoming a Steamer! I still don't care for most RPGs, pure action games, war or fighting games (I don't like games where I have to shoot or use a sword, I don't care about the violence, I just don't want to have to pick up ammo, worry about which gun I need etc.) and a platformer has to be more of an adventure for me to get on board. I'm finding I really like the cartoon type Adventure games the most and that may sound typical for me, but I have always been a HORROR genre lover. Basically, the graphics have to grab my attention first, I prefer a good plot, and then the genre comes into play. Steam must have some really good algorithms, they have broadened my horizons so to speak

I think I'd rather just play through the Steam client so I can get the cloud saves. Besides, if the game has Steam-only trophies associated with it, if you were playing offline, it might not register that you got the trophy? LOL gaming OCD me... Of course, being able to play offline is extremely useful if your internet service is spotty for whatever reason.

That's why I stalk Steam friends to see what they've added to their wishlists.
A great way to try a new genre is all the FREE games that are available. Doesn't cost anything except a little time.
I would, too. I did play off the internet a couple of years ago. We had a power surge that set the cable lines on fire for the whole neighborhood. The electricity was restored within a couple of hours but it took over a week for Comcast to get new cable lines installed. It fried my water heater. I wouldn't take a shower in cold water so it freed up time for playing games off line. Sometimes circumstances are out of our control.

My brother has been on Steam for at least 10 years and one of his gripes to me was, "Hey, how come I keep getting recommendations for hidden object games? I don't want to play those! Stop giving me these recommendations for HOGs!" (rofl) (He's an action game, RPG, and some adventure or puzzle games fan.)

I really like the fact that when you are done with a game at Steam, you can remove it from you library list and move it to a "Hidden" file where you can still access it. Back when I used to play more BFG games, I always wished you could remove games from the list.

It's been years but I have used Gamehouse as well. I believe I also bought at least one from a site called Gamezebo.

They tried to pick up some of the slack when ChitChat closed at BF. I belonged to a group there for a while run by a former BF member. Gamezebo is still in business but they do reviews, walkthroughs and tips mostly for mobile/Switch games. As far as I can see they don't sell anything now.

If several people are interested in buying games directly from developers, perhaps I could create a thread with website links of individual developers who sell their games, I'm assuming other developers are either already doing this or will soon offer this feature I think this is an excellent idea. It will give people more options. Legacy Games has some great deals.

Lately I been getting my games from Bigfish and spending my points. Yesterday I got the new Angkor's (my brother let me get it). He was going to make me sign a contract saying that's it till nov. He then said that's it for the rest of the month. So I can't get anything from Bigfish till next month. Gamehouse next week, I have a reward coupon saved up for the new Clutter on Gamehouse.

When I'm interested in a game, I first search for it on the "https://isthereanydeal.com/" page. That's where I keep my wishlist. I watch for discounts and if the price suits me, I buy it where it's cheapest.
I don't have a "subscription" anywhere, where I have to pay some sort of fee every month or I lose access to the games. The exception is BFG, from time to time I'll pay for a membership for a month and buy enough at 65% off to make it worthwhile :-)

I was searching on BF while bored a few days ago and I started playing the demo for Ancient TriJong by Toybox Games (I already own Ancient TriPeaks Solitaire II and love it)
Even tho it's an old game it worked flawlessly and I became addicted by the end of the demo. This is a solitaire game using mahjong tiles. I can't buy it from BF because of the glitch so I searched all over the place to find this game. I found it on Game Fools for 2.99 and I made sure to uncheck the box enabling the free month trial which is what people complain about recurring charges.
I am hooked on this game and highly recommend it...hopefully I don't get charged by Game Fools next month and become a game fool
Here's my review if interested:
I THOUGHT THIS WOULD BE A BORING MAHJONG GAME BUT IT'S A FUN SOLITAIRE GAME WITH MAJONG TILES! I've been playing a bunch of random older games lately and I was expecting this game to be an ordinary Mahjong game, which happens to be my least favorite genre. I was wrong, this is a really fun Solitaire game with Majong tiles instead of cards! I'd also like to add that so far, every game I've come across that was developed by Toybox Games, has been totally worthy of playing and I have found some great "new favorites" among these classics!
There are two features in this game that are just unheard of. The first feature allows you to add your own Music with the click of a button, how cool is that? The second feature allows you to create your own Level Layout...say what, who'd have thunk this would be a thing?!?
QUEST MODE: -Choose Easy, Medium, Hard, or All (mixture of all modes progressively) -There are 15 Quests and 10 levels per Quest (150 levels total). -Click available tiles that are 1 Higher or 1 Lower than the base card. -If no cards are available, click the deck card pile -There is an undo feature that doesn't seem to affect the score. -I love the Score Card that appears after completing each level because it keeps track of your score AND your Best Combo length.
SURVIVAL MODE: -Choose to play in a Timed or Untimed Mode. -Play until you fail a level. -Your score is based on all the levels you successfully complete. -There is an Undo feature, and a Tile Counter. -There is a Combo Meter and multiplier which increases when you remove the cards from the board quickly in concession.
If you are a Solitaire fan or a Mahjong fan, I think you will find this game to be quite enjoyable. I played the Quest Mode in the "All Modes" option and found that the progression of difficulty was kept at a good pace to keep the game interesting.

For casual, single player games (like Match 3s, Mahjong, HOGs), I buy from BFG. I've only bought one game from Amazon, the WoW battlechest back in 2014 when I first discovered WoW and got hooked. I have both Steam and Gog, 2 or 3 games from each. There are 3 MMORPGs I play every day, SWTOR, WoW and GW2. I bought the expansions/subs from the developer's websites.
