I live high up in the mountains and on an average season, will see at least half a dozen bears. I've had run ins with both grizzly and black bears. Bear droppings are something I see almost every time I go off the beaten path here. Usually what I'll see is a large pyramid shaped pile of huckelberries or blueberries. If the pile is old and dried, no problem. If the pile is fresh, time to get out of there.

@chevalier, that's so cool but how often are they fresh and how fast do you run? :D

I see fresh scat about once a month. With black bears you can stand your ground and they will usually back away. Sows with a cub is bad news and I've had some close calls. Grizzlys will try to kill you and you have to get out of there or go up a large tree as thy can bring down small ones.
When hiking I carry a 10" knife and some bear spray.

They most definitely do in the woods! Walked up to our well today and saw 4 piles of various ages along the way! Our most recent actual bear sighting was a week ago, a female (we think) of about 20 months. She seems to be our most frequent visitor this year. We suspect she's the same cub that came a lot with her mom and sibling last year. We saw what we think is her brother more earlier, in the spring. Though, a few weeks ago one of them was chasing the other past our kitchen. Not sure what that was about.

I JUST had one of our young bears walk by my office window and dog-run yard. It was maybe 15-20 feet away from me and looking to come in my dog-run via the gate. They've never done that that we know of, but we are in such a drought that the salmon aren't spawning properly and these poor bears are extra hungry this year. The good weather means they still have berries and fruit but they need the salmon to fatten up before winter. I opened my window and hissed at it (I just wanted to deter and not terrify) and it just turned away from the gate and left, thankfully. I don't like to yell at them when they come by, but I kind of did a few weeks ago when one stole an antler we had sitting out on a stump. I kind of hollered "hey, don't steal our antler!" and it ran off with it, dropping it a few feet later.
Edit: Saw it again 15 minutes after the first sighting. This time in front of the front yard fence, making it's way to more blackberry and salmonberry bushes we have there. My dog saw it this time and went nuts from her front window bench. She's so serious about her barking duties. (rofl)

Some of our bears... Young cub up a tree outside our kitchen (his mama was off chasing a wolf that had come after her cubs, first time I'd seen a wolf) Older cub wandering outside our kitchen Mama and 2 young(ish) cubs outside my bedroom One of the same cubs about 9 months later when it was newly on it's own...we call her June and I'm pretty sure it was her who killed our window screen.
