World Multiple Sclerosis Day – May 30, 2021
World Multiple Sclerosis Day, falling on May 30, invites dialogue on the disease. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic progressive disease where the insulating covers of the nervous system are damaged. MS is also known as encephalomyelitis disseminata, and its symptoms include muscle weakness, double vision, and mental/physical problems. Due to the lack of research studies on the disease, the exact causes behind it are generally unknown. Many scientists believe that there might be a connection between the onset of the disease and genes and/or nerve-cell dysfunction. Furthermore, there is no permanent cure as of yet. The symptoms can be relieved using the right set of treatments and medication.

Memorial Day – May 31, 2021
Memorial Day, May 31, for many Americans, conjures up images of hamburgers, hot dogs, swimming pools, and summertime . But the last Monday in May serves, most importantly, as a time to honor those who died while fighting in the U.S. Armed Forces. It’s a holiday steeped in somber American history and tradition. The day actually began as “Decoration Day,” following the Civil War, when mourners placed flowers on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers. Yes, Memorial Day has also come to signify the “unofficial” start of summer, but let’s remember the heroes who made it all possible.

Autonomous Vehicle Day – May 31, 2021
Embrace the future of travel on Autonomous Vehicle Day, celebrated yearly on May 31. While self-driving cars have until recently only lived in our imaginations (or on the silver screen), technology and science have combined to bring us the dawn of a new era in travel, when automobiles can go from one place to another without anyone touching the wheel. Founded to honor the advances in the autonomous vehicle industry and to recognize the potential opportunities thereof, Autonomous Vehicle Day shows us how close we are to a sea change in the way the world travels.

National Macaroon Day – May 31, 2021
Macaron or Macaroon? Well, May 31 is definitely National Macaroon Day and it’s most assuredly an American holiday since the macaroon is definitely an American cookie! However, the confusion is natural. The origins of macaron and macaroon are the same and many of the ingredients overlap. Both use a fair amount of sugar to make these delightful confections. Both use egg whites to make the cookies rise and give them a light texture. However, the French macaron (which actually originated in Italy) uses almond flour at its base while the American macaroon uses shredded coconut to great effect.
We have Mrs. Esther Levy to thank for popularizing the great macaroon. In 1871 Mrs. Levy published the “First Jewish American Cookbook.” She originally published this recipe in the chapter on ‘cakes’ as there was not a chapter on cookies. However, it’s understandable — as the texture of a macaroon isn’t very cookie-like. It is soft and a little chewy, more like a cake than a cookie. However, the bite-size serving is most definitely cookie-like.
Macaroons deserve to be celebrated and recognized for their own characteristics. Coconut was substituted for almond flour when the first coconut palms planted in Florida began to yield fruit. Thus macaroons are not only tasty little delights, they were an early exercise in the locavore movement, eating produce grown close to home.

World No Tobacco Day – May 31, 2021
Each year, the World Health Organization (WHO) holds World No Tobacco Day on May 31. Their goal is to spread awareness about the risks of tobacco use and how we can make the world tobacco free. Roughly 6 million people die from tobacco-related ailments every year. And that number is projected to rise to over 8 million by 2030. But this is by no means a guarantee. The Sustainable Development Agenda aims to reduce deaths from noninfectious diseases by a third. Diseases linked to tobacco are on the list, so if we hit the target, 2030 will be a year to celebrate (oh yea!)—not only for our health, but the size of our wallets. Your average smoker drops around $4,000 on cigarettes annually. Imagine all of the other cool holidays you could enjoy with that money (we have a few suggestions, just saying). So let’s use World No Tobacco Day as a launching pad to a brighter and less smokey future!

Dare Day – June 1, 2021
Dare Day on June 1 is the perfect opportunity for people to break out of their shells and do something different. Yes, not all people like to take risks — and it’s this very lack of courage that makes one fall into a comfort zone where even thinking of doing something daring becomes unacceptable. Do you want to continue living a calm and boring life free of all sorts of fun activities? If the answer is no, Dare Day is the perfect time for you to break out of your shell and shock everyone around you. Dare to be different and enjoy it while it lasts!
HISTORY OF DARE DAY While the exact history of Dare Day is unclear, the origins of games related to dares have existed for centuries. This is because it is human nature to challenge each other to perform difficult tasks that we may fail to perform. The fearlessness to go ahead with a certain command regardless of the consequences is the main factor that differentiates someone who is daring from someone who prefers to play it safe.
Dare Day was created keeping this very objective in mind — to give people an opportunity to test their courage. Dedicated to daring individuals across the U.S., June 1 is the time of the year where people challenge each other and try to accomplish different tasks with boldness.
The day, however, is not meant to bully anyone or force people into performing acts they find agonizing. Instead, the event was formed so friends and family across the country can have a good time and partake in some daring and fun activities. A lot of people also celebrate the day with the globally famous party game called ‘Truth or Dare’ in which each player is given an option to speak the truth or opt for a dare. This game has existed for centuries and aims to lighten up a party with funny yet challenging dares. The truth questions, too, are not easy to answer and may require a great deal of courage.

Flip A Coin Day – June 1, 2021
Flip a Coin Day, celebrated every year on June 1, is a day where the history and significance of coin tosses are highlighted. This is because coin flips have been used to make vital decisions for centuries and, from the looks of it, this habit will be carried forth by the coming generations. Instead of worrying yourself over difficult choices, leave the day to chance and make decisions based on a coin toss. All you have to do is trust the universe and flip a coin. So what do you choose: heads or tails?
HISTORY OF FLIP A COIN DAY Coin flipping is one of the easiest games of chance and is often used by people to make important decisions. For many, a coin toss can decide their fate, therefore, the coin flip is seen as a way for God or a higher power to push forth his will and communicate what he feels the right choice is. For example, the singing legend Ritchie Valens lost his life after a fateful coin toss placed him in a horrifying plane crash. In fact, in 1903, it is a coin toss that provided Wilbur Wright with a chance to make history! Yes, the first attempt to fly was made after a simple coin flip decided whether Wilbur Wright or Orville Wright would fly first.
It is stories like these that have made coin tosses a helpful way for making choices. To celebrate this very notion, Flip a Coin Day was formed and is celebrated across the U.S. Though the origins of the holiday are inconsistent, the game has existed in the world since the days before technology. It is a surprise that this tradition was carried from ancient times, when superstitions reigned supreme, into modern times and is still used in numerous sports today. For instance, in cricket, the toss decides who gets to bat or bowl first, whereas coin flips in tennis decide which player is given the opportunity to serve first. Coin flips are also often used in politics in which a coin is tossed when two candidates poll an equal number of votes.

Global Day of Parents – June 1, 2021
In 2012, the UN General Assembly declared the first ever Global Day of Parents. Since then, it has been held annually on June 1 to honor parental units around the world. Being a parent is one of the most universal experiences, but it’s definitely not a walk in the park. For one, it has its challenges long before kids are even born. With many complications resulting from pregnancy, just having a healthy parent is something to be grateful for. And while many of us didn’t appreciate being nagged to clean our rooms, someone had to help us fight off the dust bunny invasion. Honestly, if we had never learned to handle tiny responsibilities like that, we’d have no hope of coping with the adult world. So let’s use this day to say thanks to our first teachers and nurturers. And if you happen to be a parent, give yourself a big pat on the back (seriously).

International Tabletop Day – June 1, 2021
Gamers unite for International Tabletop Day which lands on June 1. We’re excited to go all-in for our favorite games! Tabletop games have been played for years and they’ve evolved over the centuries. Battleship, for example, started on paper, and in the original, it included land areas and water. As time went on, it entered the third dimension as a vertical toy, and then went on to become one of the first computer games.

National Go Barefoot Day – June 1, 2021
National Go Barefoot Day is on June 1 and this is an opportunity for us to not only enjoy the feeling of walking around barefoot but also support a charity that strives to provide underprivileged children with shoes. Often, we don’t realize how privileged we are to have something as simple as shoes to wear. On this day, it’s imperative to take cognizance of our privilege and give to those in need.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL GO BAREFOOT DAY An unfortunate Indian Ocean tsunami disaster in 2004 left many adversely affected by the event and drove them towards poverty. In an endeavor to help those victims, Soles4Souls created National Go Barefoot Day.
While being barefoot is indeed liberating and helps us connect to nature, shoes provide a plethora of benefits and are extremely functional. It would be ideal if everyone living in the world had at least one pair of shoes that they could use in their daily lives.
The primary goal of this charitable day is to encourage people to donate footwear, be it used or new, that can be given to the underprivileged people who desperately need shoes. Instead of just discarding your shoes when you’re bored of them, wouldn’t it be better to give them to someone who could really make some use of them? We underestimate the difference a usable pair of shoes can make for someone who doesn’t have any. Many people are unable to go to work or school only because they don’t own shoes. Donating shoes will not only help solve this problem but also prevent your shoes from simply ending up in landfills.
Since the inception of this cause, there has been unprecedented and overwhelming support with over 40.5 million pairs of shoes being donated across the world. People are encouraged to help and bring about joy in someone else’s life through the simple act of donating a pair of shoes.

National Heimlich Maneuver Day – June 1, 2021
National Heimlich Maneuver Day is on June 1 and we are geared up to honor an important method that can help save someone from choking. The Heimlich maneuver is essentially an abdominal thrust where you place your fist slightly above the navel of a person who is choking. Then, with your other hand, you grasp your fist and shove it inward and upward to expel the object on which the person is choking.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL HEIMLICH MANEUVER DAY It wasn’t very long ago that these life-saving abdominal thrusts were devised by Dr. Henry J. Heimlich after reading an article in the “New York Times.” In 1972, the article stated that more than 3,000 people died in the U.S. due to choking. Until then, the common method to relieve a person from choking was slapping them on their back, however, several doctors suggested that it might do more harm than good as it might push the object further downwards and cause more damage.
This inspired Dr. Heimlich to devise an improved method to help a choking victim that could be practiced by the public and not just healthcare professionals. He published his informal findings through an essay titled ‘Pop Goes the Café Coronary’ in an issue of “Emergency Medicine” and, today, this is what we all know as the Heimlich maneuver.
The Heimlich maneuver has saved many people over the years. However, doctors recommend that this method only be used on conscious people and that you should call 9-1-1 before you start implementing the maneuver. It’s surprising to note that Dr. Heimlich used the maneuver himself at the age of 96 years when he saved a woman in his nursing home.
National Heimlich Maneuver Day is important as it can save many lives. The dedicated day also kicks off National Safety Month. We all can make a conscious decision to learn more about the method and educate others so that we are prepared the next time an unfortunate choking situation takes place.

National Say Something Nice Day – June 1, 2021
There’s an adage that says that people may not remember what you do, but they’ll certainly remember how you made them feel, and at no time is that more true than on National Say Something Nice Day, observed on June 1 each year. This holiday is about lifting your co-workers, members, acquaintances, even foes, with genuine kind words — being a “lifter,” and seeing how much healthier and happier you feel in the process. It takes discipline. In some cases, you may feel that negative beliefs you have about certain others are most definitely based on truthful reality. The challenge of National Say Something Nice Day is to put those beliefs aside — no matter how warranted you feel they are — and find something you really appreciate in a given person. That is, it’s not about syrupy false compliments. If you exercise your mind, you can find something positive about any of the people you come across today. Maybe you like the hairstyle of the cop who just wrote you a ticket. Maybe you admire the management style of the co-worker that got the promotion you were passed up for. Look within yourself for the positive, and it will come back to you tenfold.

Oscar the Grouch Day – June 1, 2021
Oscar the Grouch Day is celebrated on June 1, which is also the birthday of Oscar the Grouch. He is a fictional character who lives in a trash can on “Sesame Street” with a green body and no visible nose. Oscar does not know what it means to have a happy birthday and believes that the best thing about birthdays is that you don’t have to celebrate them again for a whole year once they are gone. It was “Sesame Street” episode 3,866 that revealed that Oscar’s birthday is on June 1.
HISTORY OF OSCAR THE GROUCH DAY The Oscar the Grouch puppet was made by Muppets Inc for the children’s television series “Sesame Street,” which began to air in 1969. With 51 seasons to its name, the show has become one of the most iconic television shows.
What inspired Jim Henson, one of the creators of “Sesame Street,” to come up with Oscar the Grouch was a rude waiter at a restaurant called Oscar’s Salt of the Sea. In his original sketch, Oscar was a grumpy-looking spiky monster in magenta. However, the technological limitations of the time made him redesign Oscar with orange fur before his premiere in 1969. Oscar got his green color during the second season. In the show, he said that he turned green after spending his vacation at Swamp Mushy Muddy where it was very damp, which made him all moldy and slimy.
According to author Robert W. Morrow in his book “‘Sesame Street’ and the Reform of Children’s Television,” Oscar the Grouch was created to showcase ethnic and racial diversity. His tastes and manners were different from the other characters of the show. These differences were used by the creators as a metaphor for racial differences to address social issues.
In its early years, young enthusiastic viewers of “Sesame Street” mailed gifts of trash to Oscar the Grouch via the Children’s Television Workshop. These included a box of old sneakers, an old bathing cap, and stale poppy seeds.
“Don’t bang on my can! Go away,” which was Oscar’s first line in episode 1 of “Sesame Street” remains the epitome of his personality more than 50 years later.

Pen Pal Day – June 1, 2021
People around the world celebrate Pen Pal Day on June 1 with great excitement. The rich tradition of making pen pals continues even today despite social media. People love writing and reading letters from friends. Pen Pal Day is an excellent way to learn about people from different countries and cultures and can help you to connect with new pen pals from around the world.
HISTORY OF PEN PAL DAY The trend of making pen pals itself started during the 1930s. In 1936, a society named Student Letter Exchange was formed to help people find suitable pen pals. It helped young students from different countries connect through letters and learn about each other’s cultures.
Many pen pal companies back in the day charged a fee for their services. They would assist people in finding a suitable pen friend according to their likes, dislikes, and personality. During the 1950s, newspapers and magazines started columns dedicated to pen friends. People looking for a pen pal would either have their brief details published in that section or find one with similar interests from the list that’s already published in that column.
Today, one can also find pen friends through online communities and social media like Facebook and Reddit. National Pen Pal Day is a fantastic way to make your pen friends feel special and loved. Pen pals share personalized gifts and messages with each other on this day. A pen pal can be from any part of the world and, in most cases, it is not necessary to meet them in person. You interact with them through letters.

Stand For Children Day – June 1, 2021
Every year on Stand For Children Day, celebrated on 1 June, thousands of Americans raise awareness about the issues faced by children in the U.S. Some of the problems include education, childcare, access to health services, and personality-building activities. Over the years, the focus of the day has also shifted to ensuring that public schools are funded properly and include educated teachers who adopt modern teaching methods. Achieving racial justice, too, has become a critical mission since numerous children face discrimination from a young age. Motivated to make a difference for the children of tomorrow? Now is the time to raise your voice!
