The Day the Music Died – February 3, 2022~U.S.
The Day the Music Died is observed on February 3 every year. It’s the anniversary of the fatal plane crash that killed three important figures in rock and roll.
Musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. Richardson died along with the pilot Roger Peterson in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa. In the thick of winter, the poor flight conditions led to the Peterson losing control of the plane, causing it to crash and claim the lives of all four people on board.
The day was immortalized as The Day the Music Died by musician Don McLean, who sang about the accident in his song ‘American Pie.’
HISTORY OF THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED The Day the Music Died is observed on the anniversary of the day three of the best upcoming American rock and roll musicians were killed in a plane crash.
One of them was Buddy Holly, a singer-songwriter who wrote many songs during his short career and is credited with defining the rock and roll lineup of two guitars, bass, and drums. His music had a huge influence on musicians such as Bob Dylan and The Beatles.
Rock and roll pioneers, Valens, and Richardson, also known as ‘The Bopper’ were on tour in winter when they realized that they were sick and tired of the poor tour bus conditions. Long trips on the tour bus would give the performers frostbite and the flu, making it impossible for them to perform.
At Clear Lake, Holly finally decided against traveling any further on the tour bus and decided to charter a plane to the next location. Richardson was ill, so asked Waylon Jennings, a fellow band member, for his seat on the plane, to which he agreed. Valens had also asked Tommy Allsup, another band member, to fly in his stead and they agreed to toss a coin to decide. Valens won.
McLean named the day of the crash The Day the Music Died in his song ‘American Pie’ which was an enormous hit. Besides commemorating the day, the song title has also become symbolic of the shift in cultural attitudes, and the death of the optimism of the 1950s.

National Women Physicians Day – February 3, 2022~U.S.
This is just the fourth National Women Physicians Day, on February 3 . The event celebrates Elizabeth Blackwell’s birthday; she was the first female medical doctor in the U.S. It’s a time to honor women doctors across the country, and the progress they’ve made since Blackwell’s time. Nationally, there are still fewer female doctors than male doctors, but the progress is steady. In 2017, for the first time in history, women made up more than half of all those in medical schools.

National Missing Persons Day – February 3, 2022~U.S.
National Missing Persons Day is observed on February 3 every year. This day is important because it draws attention to the thousands of missing person cases throughout the country. The day is also a valuable opportunity to bring awareness to the general public about the people who are missing, and increases the chances of them being found. National Missing Persons Day is observed not only for the missing people but also for their families and friends who have to deal with the trauma of having their loved one go missing without a trace. This day respects and honors their grief.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL MISSING PERSONS DAY National Missing Persons Day was set up on May 25, 1983, to honor and draw attention to all the missing person cases across the country. Thousands of people go missing without a trace every year. These people may be adults or children, and while many of these people might appear later, there are still those who are never seen again.
A missing person is someone whose whereabouts are unknown, and there is no confirmation of whether they’re alive or dead. The uncertainty is extremely traumatizing for the loved one of these missing persons, who are always left wondering if the person they love is safe.
People may go missing voluntarily, where they attempt to run away from abusive situations with their parents or spouses. Another reason they might have gone missing is that they were abducted where although there are a lot of cases of kidnapping by strangers, in most cases, it’s by someone the missing person knows or is familiar with in some way.
A person may even have gone missing because they have lost their memory causing them to get lost. The worst-case scenario, however, is that they may have lost their lives in a way that makes it difficult to confirm, like through a natural disaster or at sea.
Missing persons cases are always investigated by the police, but in the U.S. voluntary search and rescue teams may be formed to look for the missing person. These teams are particularly important in rescuing people who have disappeared on hiking trails.

Four Chaplains Day – February 3, 2022~U.S.
Four Chaplains Day is celebrated on February 3 every year in recognition of four Army chaplains who acted in the spirit of heroic sacrifice and humanitarianism onboard a sinking ship.
It was 1943 and the U.S.A.T. Dorchester was sailing across the Atlantic ocean, packed to capacity. Tragedy struck when a German submarine fired a torpedo at the ship, sinking it and killing the hundreds who were onboard.
HISTORY OF FOUR CHAPLAINS DAY The Four Chaplains on board the ship were Reverend George L. Fox of the Methodist faith, Jewish Rabbi Alexander D. Goode, Father John P. Washington of the Catholic faith, and Reverend Clark V. Poling from the Dutch Reformed Church. Many witnesses remember their courage, support, and prayers for the many distressed people onboard. They offered their life jackets to four people in need and as a consequence had to remain on the sinking ship, comforted only by the thought of their actions and the fact that they were going to meet their Maker soon.
In recognition of their valor and guided by non-discrimination against anyone based on their religion, the Four Chaplains Memorial Foundation was set up as a way of promoting interfaith unity and a spirit of service among individuals. The U.S. government awarded them the Purple Heart and Distinguished Service Cross medals in 1944. They were also nominated for the highest military honor, the Medal of Honor, but because they had not engaged in active combat with the enemy, they did not qualify for it. Congress, therefore, created a ‘Special Medal for Heroism’ as an honorable substitute.
Since the bombing took place on February 3, 1943, many military organizations and clubs across the country observe Four Chaplains Day, and in 1998, a senate resolution was passed to recognize the 55th anniversary of the incident making Four Chaplains Day official.

Feed the Birds Day – February 3, 2022~U.S.
Feed the Birds Day is celebrated on February 3 every year and is part of the celebrations of National Bird-Feeding Month. Feeding the Birds Day is celebrated to bring attention to the extra help birds need right before spring, when their winter stores of food start running out.
This day is also a great day to think about the kind of food birds like to eat and make sure that your bird feeders are set up to help out the birds that visit your backyard with the best food. The day also offers a great opportunity to learn about wild birds and their needs.
HISTORY OF FEED THE BIRDS DAY Feed the Birds Day first occurred in 1994 to encourage people to feed birds in winter. Celebrated in February as part of National Bird-Feeding Month, this day is celebrated during the coldest part of the year when the snow is thick and food scarce.
February is also the last stretch of winter, which is when bird’s food reserves run low, and finding more becomes incredibly difficult. This is a dangerous time for birds because they need the extra calories that they get from food to keep themselves warm but don’t have the energy to go out looking for it. Most of the seeds they eat will be buried under the snow where they can’t get to it.
Feed the Birds Day is also a day celebrated to spread information about what birds eat so that they receive exactly the kind of food they need to survive. Rather than bread, which most people think is a good food source, birds need seed blends that are denser in calories and help them generate the energy they need to fly and stay warm.
Nutrient-rich seeds include black-oil sunflower, nyjer (or thistle seed,) white proso millet, and sunflower chips. A seed to avoid is the red milo seed (sorghum,) which birds won’t even eat if blended with other seeds.
Once birds learn that they can get a steady source of food, they will rely on it, so it’s important to stay consistent with the feeding.
Besides food, people are also encouraged to set up heated bird watering stations so that birds have easy access to water in a safe space.

Elmo's Birthday – February 3, 2022~U.S.
Elmo’s Birthday is celebrated on February 3 every year. The day was first celebrated by “Sesame Street”, who has since described Elmo as being three-and-a-half years old today and every day, from his first appearance on the show in 1980.
Elmo is a beloved character in the children’s series, produced by the Sesame Workshop — a non-profit organization that produces educational programs for kids.
When Elmo was first conceived, he was only meant to have been a supporting character. But with time and through the hard work of many writers and puppeteers, Elmo developed into a personality with a prominent role in the show.
HISTORY OF ELMO'S BIRTHDAY Elmo’s Birthday is celebrated on February 3 every year by the Sesame Workshop who produce content on the “Sesame Street” show.
Elmo is a red puppet, referred to as a muppet whose character appears on the educational show, “Sesame Street,” which is one of the longest-running children’s programs in the country today.
Although “Sesame Street” was created to appeal to a wide audience, its focus was to educate children using a set curriculum aimed at achieving educational goals. Researchers, educators, writers, and producers all worked together on the show that monitors the educational effects it has on its viewers and adjusts where necessary to better suit the show’s objectives.
Elmo first appeared in the 1980 “Sesame Street” song, ‘We Are Monsters.’ While various puppeteers manned the character, it was puppeteer Kevin Clash’s performance that really brought the character to life.
Elmo has since become a popular character who appears regularly on “Sesame Street” and hosts the last 15 minutes of the show, which is aimed at toddlers. He is ideal for this role because children that age can relate to him since he is in their age group.
Apart from this segment, called ‘“Elmo’s World”, Elmo was a regular on “The Rosie O’Donnell Show” too. He has toured the talk show circuit and has made appearances on “Martha Stewart Living” and “The View”. He was the star of the full-length film, “The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland” and the 60-minute musical fantasy film, “Elmo Saves Christmas.”

National Thank a Mail Carrier Day – February 4, 2022~Other
For National Thank a Mail Carrier Day on February 4, chances are the weather is windy and blustery cold, and maybe even snowy where you live. But the weather shouldn’t stop you from thanking your letter carrier because they are the ones braving the conditions to get the mail to you.
There are plenty of jokes told about undelivered letters, but nobody gets them, so we will refrain from telling them here. The key to telling mailman jokes is good delivery, so we will leave those for the dedicated men and women who will be making sure the mail gets delivered today. They deserve our appreciation every day, but too often they are not recognized for the work they do. So today we salute the mail carriers who ensure our post reaches us.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL THANK A MAIL CARRIER DAY “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.”
Although these words are carved in stone over the entrance to the old New York City Post Office building on 8th Avenue, the U.S. Postal Service does not have an official motto. But if it did, this would surely be it.
According to the USPS, the quote often mistaken as the U.S. Post Office motto comes from “The Persian Wars” written by the ancient Greek historian Herodotus around 445 B.C. and refers to the Persian system of mounted postal couriers who “served with great fidelity” during the wars between the Greeks and Persians (500-449 B.C.).It serves as a fitting tribute to our nation’s letter carriers who “serve with great fidelity” in the faithful execution of their work as public servants.
Beginning in 1692, the first formal system of mail delivery was established in the American colonies. Postmasters were appointed in each colony with a tavern utilized in each community by postal riders for depositing mail instead of delivering mail directly to individual addresses.
In 1775, the Second Continental Congress established the creation of a United States Post Office and appointed Benjamin Franklin as head of the department. A woman named Mary Katherine Goddard who served under Franklin may have been America’s first female postmaster when she was appointed by Franklin to be postmaster in Baltimore Maryland that same year. This early Post Office Department hired post riders who rode horseback hundreds of miles over dangerous and isolated territory to deliver mail to remote post offices. Some of these brave post riders were commissioned to alert the colonies when British troops were on the move in the early stages of the American War for Independence, and thus the Post Office played a critical role in the American revolution.
After winning the fight for independence from Britain, the first officially recognized Post Office Department of the United States of America opened in 1792, authorized by the newly ratified United States Constitution that empowered Congress to establish Post Offices.
An efficient and dependable system of mail delivery continues to be a vital part of the preservation and strength of modern societies, just as it was vital to the expansion of ancient civilizations. As Herodotus recounted so eloquently, those who carry and deliver mail and “serve with great fidelity” deserve to be recognized and appreciated. On National Thank a Mail Carrier Day, we celebrate the men and women who continue this honorable tradition.

World Cancer Day – February 4, 2022~World
Sooner or later, it seems, cancer has an impact on us all. That’s why World Cancer Day on February 4 is an important day to raise awareness about prevention, detection, and treatment. Started by the Union for International Cancer Control in 2008, World Cancer Day activities seek to significantly reduce illness and death caused by cancer by 2020.
WHEN IS WORLD CANCER DAY 2022? World Cancer Day is observed worldwide on February 4. The aim is to inform and encourage people on its prevention, early detection, and treatment. This initiative was taken by the Union for International Cancer Control to campaign and advocate for the targets of the World Cancer Declaration, penned in 2008.
HISTORY OF WORLD CANCER DAY According to the World Health Organization, Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) was established in 1993. Based in Geneva, it is a membership-based society working towards the eradication of cancer around the world and advancing medical research. Under its direction, the first International Cancer Day was celebrated in Geneva, Switzerland in the same year. Several well-known organizations, cancer societies, and treatment centers also supported this initiative.
World Cancer Day was made official at the first World Summit Against Cancer in 2000. The event took place in Paris and was attended by members of cancer organizations and prominent government leaders from around the world. A document titled the ‘Charter of Paris Against Cancer,’ featuring 10 articles, was signed, outlining a global commitment to improving the facilitation and quality of life of cancer patients. Advancement and increased investment in researching, preventing, and treating cancer was also highlighted. Article X of this charter officially declared World Cancer Day to be observed on February 4.
Cancer has numerous types, so there are various colors and symbols used to mark a specific type of cancer and promote the fight against it. For example, the orange ribbon is for creating awareness of cancer in children, while the pink ribbon is globally associated with breast cancer awareness. As a symbol of hope for patients and survivors, the daffodil flower is used by the American Cancer Society for a future where this life-threatening disease no longer exists.
On this day, hundreds of events and fundraisers take place around the world each year, to bring individuals, communities, and organizations together in hospitals, schools, businesses, markets, community halls, parks, etc. to campaign and deliver the powerful reminder that those hit by cancer are not alone, and we all share a responsibility in reducing the global impact of this disease.

Working Naked Day – February 4, 2022~U.S.
Working Naked Day is celebrated on February 4, and it is not what you think it is! The name of the holiday is suggestive, but it is actually about working from home (the naked part is optional). This idea may have sounded absurd a couple of years ago, but with remote work on the rise, discover how to work at peak productivity while at your most comfortable state.
HISTORY OF WORKING NAKED DAY Working Naked Day was created by home office expert Lisa Kanarek. She founded this holiday along with the Working Naked brand when she quit her demanding corporate job almost 20 years ago in favor of working full-time from home. This decision wasn’t common back then, and for a long time, Kanarek didn’t let people know she was working from home out of fear that she wouldn’t be taken seriously. The term ‘freelancer’ was probably not mainstream in 2001 either. She has even authored seven books about working from home, including “Working Naked: A Guide to the Bare Essentials of Home Office Life” in 2011, in which she shares her strategies for turning disorganized home offices into productive spaces.
Kanarek came up with the term ‘working naked’ in the late 1990s when she was a consultant at BankBoston. Fleet acquired the bank and laid everyone off until she was the only employee left on her floor. At that point, even the air conditioning had been shut down, so she said to herself, “I could work naked and nobody would even know!” And then she thought, “Wouldn’t it be cool if I could have a job where I could?” She continued to create software that would later become her first ApexSQL tools and consulted for three more years before she founded a company to promote the working freedoms she had briefly envisioned all alone on a hot floor of a high-rise in downtown Boston.
Working Naked Day celebrates the freedom and flexibility employees get when they work from home. The topic is debatable, but there are some core factors that cannot be denied. Commuting is eliminated, which accounts for a good percentage of daily stress. Also, one doesn’t have to worry about lunch or coffee. Let’s not forget that a professional wardrobe is traded for slippers and house clothes. According to Lisa, the idea of working naked is different for everyone. For some, the very idea makes them feel ‘naked’ — with no one close by to quickly ask for help when stuck — but it generally refers to the most comfortable clothing to wear while sitting down for work.
Contrary to what it may seem, working from home is a bold decision to make, just like trying any other new thing. So if you’ve been able to do it successfully, give yourself a nice pat on the back instead of hiding it as most do. Kanarek says that remote workers should be proud of daring to work in a place of comfort, solitude, and ‘nakedness,’ and be encouraged to talk about their accomplishments so that people will realize the strength it takes to make such a career choice.

National Wear Red Day – February 4, 2022~U.S.
The first Friday in February (February 4) is National Wear Red Day. On this day, which is considered American Heart Month, everyone across the country dons the color red in order to raise and spread awareness in hopes to help eradicate heart disease and stroke in millions of women all over the nation. So put on your reddest red — whether it be a lipstick, a pair of pants, or your favorite hat — and paint the city red.
WHEN IS NATIONAL WEAR RED DAY 2022? Be it a lipstick, dress, shoes, or accessory, wear your brightest reds on National Wear Red Day this February 4. Even though the day gives us the opportunity to wear more of this stunning color, it, more importantly, focuses on cardiovascular risks and diseases.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL WEAR RED DAY In line with other heart and soul related themes of the month, National Wear Red Day brings awareness to women’s heart health. Women have been the heartbeats of the home since the beginning, playing multiple roles as mothers, daughters, sisters, counselors, providers, and protectors. Women shoulder more responsibility now in and outside the home than ever before. In kind, they need more support in nurturing themselves as deeply as they nurture their families and communities. National Wear Red Day is a beautiful first step in giving women the world over the critical heart health information and services they need and deserve.
National Wear Red Day is supported by the American Heart Association and celebrated in conjunction with national heart health month. It focuses specifically on raising awareness of women’s heart disease and stroke risks. Cardiovascular disease causes 1 in 3 deaths in women every year making it the number one health related killer in women. The good news is 87% of all heart issues are believed to be preventable making awareness, education, research, and resources vital to the cause this holiday supports.
On this day every year, supporters wear their favorite red dresses, shoes, tops, and accessories in order to stand together with their affected sisters and encourage others to take preventative actions for the sake of their heart’s health.

National Bubble Gum Day – February 4, 2022~U.S.
Children’s book author Ruth Spiro came up with the idea of National Bubble Gum Day as a way for kids to raise money for school activities without having to sell anything. On February 4, kids can “buy” the usually forbidden privilege of chewing gum in class if they make a donation of 50 cents. While there might be some distractions in class — like smacking and bubble-blowing — kids learn about the value of charity and schools make a little money for the causes they support. Oh, and kids also get one day to break the classic “no-gum” rule.
Bubblegum Day – February 4, 2022~U.S.
Bubblegum Day is celebrated every year on the first Friday of February. For most of us, bubblegum is somewhat a forbidden fruit. It is not essentially nutritious and parents are reluctant to give children bubblegum since it may prove detrimental to their dental health. Many schools also forbid it because gum in hair and under desks is gross. However, there are only very few of us who haven’t grown up enjoying a stick of bubblegum every once in a while. It is sweet, available in a myriad of flavors, and can be blown into bubbles! As we grow up, bubblegum is probably one of the few candies that we continue to enjoy — it’s not uncommon for adults to consume mints in the form of bubblegum, especially to combat bad breath or nicotine addiction.
HISTORY OF BUBBLEGUM DAY Bubblegum Day was first celebrated in 2006 by author Ruth Spiro. She decided that the world needed a day that highlighted the importance of education, philanthropy, and most importantly, bubblegum. The celebrations were a hit from the very first time, and people quickly warmed up to the noble cause behind the day. Bubblegum Day encourages children to be generous and motivates schools to support a charity that aligns with their beliefs. National Bubblegum Day celebrations aren’t restricted to just schools, either. Adults celebrate the day by getting their businesses, libraries, and community centers to participate in philanthropic drives and give back to the community. Children pay 50 cents for the privilege of chewing gum at school on this day, which is then donated to charity.
Walter Diemer was experimenting with new gum recipes, and he stumbled upon a recipe that he called Blibber Blubber. This was less sticky than regular chewing gum, and it would stretch more easily too. This gum became popular and was eventually named Dubble Bubble. This bubblegum remained the dominant brand of bubblegum until after the Second World War.
In the new market, Bazooka bubblegum gained popularity. The first brands in America that used synthetic gum bases were Hubba Bubba and Bubble Yum — these were a welcome change from bubblegum that would often stick to the face. Bubblegum is most commonly available in pink. They got their distinctive pink color from the original recipe that Diemer used. Children prefer flavors such as strawberry and blue , while being skeptical of more complex flavors. Modern bubblegum consists of natural rubber such as chicle and some synthetic gum-based materials.

National Stuffed Mushroom Day – February 4, 2022~U.S.
National Stuffed Mushroom Day is celebrated annually on February 4. Primarily featured at parties, this savory dish is prepared by removing the stems of the mushrooms and filling the leftover hollowed area with vegetables and meat. Cheese and breadcrumbs are sprinkled on top before the mushrooms are baked and served. If you choose to stuff your mouth with these wholesome shrooms today, we’ll totally understand!
HISTORY OF NATIONAL STUFFED MUSHROOM DAY While the exact origin is unknown, stuffed mushrooms hit the food scene sometime between the mid-19th century and early 20th century. There is no one consensus on this, but it is unanimously agreed that the credit for this dish goes to the Italians, as the original stuffed mushrooms recipes hail from Italy, and the dish is very similar to another dish enjoyed by the Italians, stuffed zucchini.
In the 19th century, the French started exploring fungi for consumption, leading to the first widespread cultivation of mushrooms for eating. The brown crimini mushroom was the go-to choice for most, but what started as an acquired taste eventually expanded to accept more gourmet flavors of mushrooms such as shiitakes, morels, and the rare and expensive truffles.
Mushrooms are commonly filled with garlic, breadcrumbs, parsley, and cheese, but there are countless filling possibilities. Restaurants started serving stuffed mushrooms as a delicacy in the 1940s, using exotic ingredients such as crabmeat for the filling.

National Homemade Soup Day – February 4, 2022~U.S.
National Homemade Soup Day is celebrated on February 4. Soup is the perfect winter meal. People have been enjoying this simple yet extremely delicious dish since 20,000 B.C. Different flavors and types of soups are eaten around the world according to the culinary culture of a particular region. For example, soups in India and China are spicier than those served in New Zealand and Canada. They are also combined with other ingredients such as meats or vegetables to add more taste to them. However, soup is generally just a liquid, normally served warm.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL HOMEMADE SOUP DAY Soup has remained a popular dish throughout the globe for many years. However, the European countries were majorly responsible for its origination and growth. Its discovery proved to be vital for restaurants all over the world, as its demand has continuously increased amongst the masses.
Soup dates back as far as about 20,000 B.C. to before the time humans used modern cooking equipment or techniques. Boiling was a common practice in terms of how food was prepared and served. After the discovery of waterproof containers made out of clay, boiling became even more common and humans started cooking plants and animals. A vital element of their diet was liquid containing chunks of vegetables and/or meat. This is how soup came into existence.
The word ‘soup’ itself originated from the French word ‘soupe,’ which means broth. This French word, in turn, is derived from the Latin word ‘suppa,’ which means a piece of soaked bread.
In the 18th century, French street vendors started to make and sell high-quality exotic soup dishes called ‘restoratifs,’ which lead to the birth of the first restaurants. Furthermore, in 1765, a particular businessman in Paris opened up a shop that was dedicated entirely to the preparation of good quality soups. Apart from Europe, North America also played a role in the progression of soup. One of the first-ever cookbooks was written by William Parks, which had a great impact amongst the Americans who were interested in cooking. In the book, several chapters included recipes and ways of cooking soup. Emma Pike Ewing wrote an American cooking pamphlet on soups (“Soup and Soup Making”), which was distributed all over the country. Lastly, for better storage, the portable soup was also created in the 18th century, which made soup even more popular.

National Quacker Day – February 4, 2022~U.S.
National Quacker Day on February 4 honors a pop culture icon and her Quacker Factory clothing line. A true inspiration for everyone, Jeanne Bice’s business started small and boomed into a multi-million dollar company. Her infectious personality won the hearts of many, with die-hard fans who proudly call themselves ‘Quackers.’ Today is their day.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL QUACKER DAY Enthusiasts of Quacker Factory are celebrated on National Quacker Day. The signature clothing line for women was the brainchild of Jeanne Bice. Her clothes were unique and had the ‘sparkle and shine’ that would spread joy everywhere.
In 1981, the recently widowed Bice went into business with newly divorced Maryanne Diedrich — with whom she had previously owned a gift shop called The Silent Woman — to launch Quacker Factory. What started out small took off, and on February 4, 1995, Bice’s line debuted on the “QVC” cable shopping network. An instant hit with viewers, her entire collection sold out while still on the air. The audience couldn’t get enough of her. Her signature ‘sparkle and shine’ designs were one-of-a-kind and quirky. This was when Quacker Factory became hugely popular, even attracting a cult following, and Bice appeared on “QVC” several times over the years. She also appeared on “The Soup” often and was presented a Soup Award by longtime host Joel McHale.
Faithful customers loved the beautiful designs offered by Quacker Factory and would instantly bond with other people wearing clothing from Bice’s line. They started to feel like they belonged to a sisterhood, forming friendships, and hosting get-togethers. They labeled themselves ‘Quackers’ and would greet each other by quacking — a tradition still alive till today. In 2010, Bice founded National Quacker Day to be celebrated on February 4, the anniversary of her first appearance on “QVC.”

Give Kids A Smile – February 4, 2022~U.S.
The first Friday of February is when we turn those frowns upside down and begin the Give Kids A Smile program. The initiative, created by the American Dentist Association (ADA), is an opportunity for kids who can’t normally afford to see a dentist to get some free dental care. Dentists, as well as dental hygienists, assistants, and other volunteers, use their time and talents to ensure that children are given the dental care they need and deserve all across the country.
HISTORY OF GIVE KIDS A SMILE The Give Kids A Smile program was created by the American Dentist Association in 2003. It was a way for dentists to come together with their communities to provide dental services such as oral health, education, screenings, preventive health, and treatment to children in families in the U.S. who cannot afford it.
The event initially started out as a one-day event in February but has since grown into a national event annually. Almost one in four children under five already have cavities and 10 million children under the age of 18 receive no dental care. Give Kids A Smile remains an important part of the ADA’s Action for Dental Health. Their mission is to end any dental health problems in America by providing care to everyone, especially those who need it the most.

Western Monarch Day – February 5, 2022~U.S.
Western Monarch Day on February 5 is transporting us — via the flutter of brightly colored wings — into another, more beautiful plane. This day was established to celebrate the Monarch butterfly’s epic, almost-3000-mile-long return back to California from all over the western U.S., as a part of their seasonal migration. A huge tourist draw, butterfly migration season sees countless visitors make their way to parks and areas where these winged insects collect.
HISTORY OF WESTERN MONARCH DAY Originating in the American Tropics, this species gradually spread as its primary food source — the milkweed — spread. As the monarchs moved, their migration patterns changed too, becoming the highly sophisticated version it is now. The Monarch butterfly from western parts of the U.S. and Canada move south — to California — every time winter comes around because it’s better for their survival rates. There they have future Monarchs, who make the trip again the next year.
Scientists didn’t know this pattern earlier, although they had been studying Monarchs since the 1850s. It was only in 1930 that they were able to decipher that these winged wonders flew south for the winter and migrated north in the spring. Then, Canadian zoologist Frederick Urquhart led a team of 3000+ butterfly enthusiasts from North America, assigning them with tagging all monarchs across the continent. Using everyone’s data on where and when monarchs appeared, Urquhart noticed they seemed to gradually move south, going from Texas to Northern Mexico. Answers as to where the monarchs went in the winter were still elusive, until 1973. That’s when a businessman named Kenneth Brugger told Urquhart about seeing a ‘shower’ of monarchs rain down from the western mountains in Mexico City during a hail storm. Urquhart recruited Brugger to the monarch butterfly cause, and Brugger and his wife conducted a two-year expedition to find these elusive butterflies that only ended when they stumbled upon the butterflies’ wintering site — a patch of land on the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt.
Finally, the secret monarch butterfly’s migratory path was clear, and more people came to see their beauty in the wild. Given that the migration of the monarchs in such large numbers was a giant attraction (plus, they stay from October through March), the state of California declared February 5 as California Western Monarch Day in 2004. Their main goals were to increase tourism and educate people about this butterfly.

National Weatherperson's Day – February 5, 2022~U.S.
There are few things that can affect our day — or inspire small talk in an elevator —quite like the weather. But instead of getting caught in a heavy downpour without an umbrella, what if there were a group of special people who could give us a hint beforehand? That’s why we celebrate National Weatherperson’s Day every year on February 5 — on the birthday of John Jeffries, one of the first weather observers to take daily measurements (back in 1774). The day honors individuals in the fields of meteorology, weather forecasting and broadcast meteorology, as well as volunteer storm spotters and observers.

National Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day – February 5, 2022~U.S.
Happy National Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day! Surprisingly, this holiday was invented in New York in the middle of the winter. Created in the 1960s (clearly, because it’s a groovy idea), the day is further proof that you can eat ice cream at any time of the year, any time of the day, and on any occasion. So on the first Saturday in February, go ahead and get your treat on. Before noon. We won’t judge.
Official Recipe: The Breakfast Banana Split Prep Time: 10 minutes Servings: 1-2
Ingredients 1 Pint Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey Ice Cream 2 Tablespoons of Sliced Almonds 2 Frozen Toaster Waffles 1 Banana 1/2 Cup Brown Sugar Unsalted Butter Chocolate Syrup
Directions Peel banana and chop it into thick, round slices. Sprinkle each banana slice with a pinch of brown sugar.
Add butter to a medium size nonstick pan and heat over medium high heat. Add banana slices and remaining brown sugar.
Cook bananas until golden brown underneath (about 4-5 minutes). Gently flip bananas to brown other side (about 1 minute) and then immediately set aside caramelized bananas on plate.
Toast frozen waffles in toaster or toaster oven until golden brown.
Place the pint of Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey ice cream on its side. With a large chef’s knife or serrated knife, cut all the way through the pint of ice cream near the lid. Make another cut about 2 inches below the first cut to form a thick, round slice of ice cream with packaging still attached.
Place the ice cream slice on one toaster waffle and unwrap the carton from ice cream.
Place caramelized bananas on top of ice cream (creating a layer of banana) and drizzle chocolate syrup on top. Sprinkle sliced almonds on top of syrup.
Place second toaster waffle on top to form a breakfast sandwich. You’re welcome.

National Shower with a Friend Day – February 5, 2022~U.S.
Tired of the polar vortex? Heat things up on National Shower with a Friend Day. Note — this day started innocently enough —when a Colorado company called New Wave Enviro encouraged people to take showers with a “friend,” meaning its all-new shower filter. Their reasoning? According to the company: “Your body absorbs more chlorine through the skin and lungs while showering than while drinking tap water.” And who are we to disagree? In any event, on February 5, you are free to celebrate however you (and a friend) would like.
