Kashmir Solidarity Day – February 5, 2022~Pakistan
Kashmir Solidarity Day is on February 5, and this day is observed by the people in Pakistan and Kashmir who have been fighting for their freedom for more than 70 years. This day is also celebrated in honor of the Kashmiris who have lost their lives in the fight for freedom.
HISTORY OF KASHMIR SOLIDARITY DAY The valley of Kashmir is known as ‘heaven on earth.’ Kashmir is one of the most popular tourist spots in Pakistan — it possesses exceptional beauty and is a place that must be visited at least once in your lifetime. Unfortunately, it has been riddled with territorial conflict since 1947.
From the partition of the subcontinent, the freedom of Kashmir has been an issue of conflict between India and Pakistan. The conflict between the two countries increases with every passing year.
Kashmir Solidarity Day is observed across Pakistan to portray solidarity with the Kashmiri people. Many freedom fighters have lost their loved ones in their struggle for a separate identity on the world’s map and Pakistan supports Kashmir in its primary right to self-determination.
Kashmir Solidarity Day was established by the opposition leader of Pakistan at the time, Nawaz Sharif, in 1990. Sharif called for a strike throughout Pakistan as a protest against the Indian army, which held some parts of Kashmir. He appealed to the nation to pray for Kashmir’s freedom.
The Kashmir issue has been raised by Pakistan on a global level, but international leaders and the United Nations have not been successful in solving the problem. However, the people of Pakistan continue to support the people of Kashmir in their fight towards their goal by celebrating Kashmir Solidarity Day in February every year.

International Pisco Sour Day – February 5, 2022~U.S.
International Pisco Sour Day is celebrated on the first Saturday in February in honor of Peru’s national drink, the Pisco Sour. It takes place on February 5 this year. This cocktail is so popular, it features in many Peruvian celebrations, and almost every bar and restaurant across Peru serves it. This drink is named ‘Pisco,’ which is a grape brandy of Peruvian origin, and the cocktail term ‘sour,’ for the sour citrus juice and other sweeteners in this drink. This drink is not without its very own drama — the Chileans claim the Pisco Sour as their own and have a special Pisco Sour day too!
HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL PISCO SOUR DAY The birth of vineyards in 16th century Peru and Chile led to the production of ‘aguardiente’ — a strong alcoholic drink distilled from fermented grapes. Eventually, Peruvians adopted the name of the place whence this drink was shipped out: Pisco. Chile embraced the name change and called their ‘aguardiente’ Pisco as well.
Although the true origins of the Pisco Sour are hotly debated by mixologists and historians, a common story involves the American bartender Victor Vaughen Morris who, if he didn’t invent the drink, certainly helped make it extremely famous in Peru and the world. While working at a railway company in Peru, Morris was put in charge of overseeing celebrations on the completion of a railway project. Halfway through the party, Morris realized that the nearly 5000 guests had consumed all the whiskey. So, he mixed Pisco into a cocktail and accidentally created the Pisco Sour (or what we’d call version one). The official timeline for this momentous event is also under debate. What we do know is that Morris opened his own bar in Lima, Peru, in 1916, and the very first mention of the Pisco Sour occurred in 1920, in the September issue of “Hogar,” a Peruvian magazine. Subsequent articles and advertisements also attribute Morris as the inventor of this drink, although the people of Chile believe the Pisco Sour was invented by English steward Elliot Stubb in 1872 in Chile.
Either way, this drink underwent a revolution in the 1900s. First, in 1924 a bartender under Morris’ apprenticeship, Mario Bruiget, added egg whites and Angostura bitters, creating the current version of the beloved drink. The Chilean version of the Pisco Sour began making the rounds by 1927; then, after Morris’ bar closed down in 1929, his bartenders took the Pisco Sour recipe to their new jobs, spreading the drink all over Peru. The 1930s saw this drink in California, and thirty years later in New York.
For now, this drink is special to both Peru and Chile, and people have their preference as to which version of Pisco Sour they enjoy.

Pork Rind Appreciation Day – February 6, 2022~U.S.
National Pork Rind Appreciation Day is celebrated every year on the first Sunday in February, coinciding with Super Bowl Sunday. This year, it takes place on February 6. Did you know that there are over 300 food holidays to celebrate each year? National food holidays are special days of the year to celebrate the special delicious foods and maybe awkward and odd ones, too — every year. If you’re a big fan of pork rinds, you should never miss the ‘Big Game’ and of course, this nostalgic crunchy snack on this day!
HISTORY OF PORK RIND APPRECIATION DAY Celebrated on the same day as the Big Game, the biggest football day of the year, National Pork Rind Appreciation Day has become an annual event to celebrate how sports and snacks go together. Rudolph Foods, the world’s largest manufacturer of pork rinds and one of the world’s largest manufacturers of private and branded label snack products, started National Pork Rind Appreciation Day in 2011 and declared the day a national day. The day is celebrated on Super Bowl Sunday each year, the first Sunday in February, which is just apt since pork rinds are known to be a quirky and nostalgic game-day snack.
The Lima, Ohio-based Rudolph Foods began the annual food holiday as a way to celebrate with pork rind fans to cherish their favorite snack and foster togetherness, fun, and tradition. In addition to starting the national food day, the food production giant also proposed to donate to charity organizations in return for online support of the day by their fans. Since then, the food company has raised funds for the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund, a nonprofit organization committed to providing medical and financial assistance to retired National Football League (N.F.L.) players and their families. Teeming pork rind fans and consumers across the U.S. also supported Rudolph Foods’ proposal, including Ohio Governor John Kasich, who also issued a letter of support for the day in 2012.
What are pork rinds? Pork rinds are crispy chips produced from deep-fried pieces of pigskin. Pork rinds have recently become more popular because they are useful in paleo and ketogenic diet plans and can be included in many other delicious recipes!

charlene , cyril50 Waitangi Day – February 6, 2022~New Zealand
Waitangi Day is celebrated annually on February 6 to commemorate the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document. This day is recognized as a public holiday in New Zealand, unless the date falls on a weekend, in which case the Monday that immediately follows becomes a public holiday. Ceremonies take place at Waitangi and all around the country to commemorate the signing of the treaty.
HISTORY OF WAITANGI DAY Waitangi Day is New Zealand’s national day, which means the New Zealanders get a much-needed day off from work! Though this is a public holiday according to the country’s laws, it is also a time to reflect on the controversy that surrounded the Treaty of Waitangi and its effects on the current society.
On February 6, 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi was first signed by the representatives of the British Crown and more than 40 Māori chiefs. Five hundred Māori chiefs joined in to sign copies of the treaty by September 1840, which were sent around New Zealand.
The Treaty of Waitangi outlines the principles to which Māori chiefs and British officials made a political agreement to form a nation-state and establish a government. Because of significant differences between the Māori and English language versions of the Treaty, there has been much conflict over the treaty in terms of land possession and has since been a subject of contention.
Waitangi Day was officially celebrated in 1934 and in 1957, it was proposed as a public holiday by the New Zealand Labour Party in their party manifesto. Later in 1973, legislation was passed to recognize this date as a nationwide public holiday. However, renaming the date as New Zealand Day drew criticism as it seemed to diminish ‘Te Tiriti’. In 1976, the Waitangi Day Act restored the former name and declared it a public holiday.
Today, Waitangi Day is celebrated throughout New Zealand every year on February 6. The Waitangi Treaty Grounds where the document was first signed is a great place to learn about the Treaty of Waitangi any time of the year.

Time to Talk Day – February 6, 2022~World
Time to Talk Day, February 6, draws attention to mental health and the importance of reaching out to others. The day aims to help people open up and be honest about mental health, without the fear and stigma often attached to the topic. It can be daunting to express personal struggles and because of this, many people keep everything bottled up. By opening up, the likelihood of the person suffering seeking help increases, which can be crucial to the healing process. On Time to Talk Day, help raise awareness about mental health and be a part of changing the narrative.
HISTORY OF TIME TO TALK DAY Although there is still a long way to go in changing perceptions about mental health, the past was much worse, especially for women. In Victorian times, women were considered mentally unwell for any number of reasons that weren’t necessarily valid. Some of these reasons for such a diagnosis were post-partum depression, disobedience, and anxiety. In reality, many women were misdiagnosed due to a lack of information regarding mental illness, and an unfavorable view of women.
During the 1880s, people were placed in mental facilities, but they rarely received the help that they actually needed. When a person entered a mental facility, they were often forgotten about by society. A writer named Nelly Bly wanted to investigate this, so she went undercover inside a mental institution, posing as a mentally ill person. She wrote about the improper treatment she experienced in a series of articles, and as a result, the institution she wrote about was reformed.
The importance of mental health started advancing in the 1930’s when experts began understanding the reasons that could drive a person to madness. Austrian neurologist Sigmund Freud developed theories relating to why this behavior took place with the intent to understand and help people rather than leaving them at the mercy of facilities and prisons. His experimental theories, however, weren’t very well-received and not all of them were effective.
Fast forward to the present day, perceptions surrounding mental health and understanding it has come a long way. Experts have better knowledge of the causes and how to treat it, but there are still many misconceptions attached to the subject the public has yet to fully reconcile with. Because of this, the social movement Time to Change created Time to Talk Day in 2014, initiating millions of conversations worldwide through various channels about mental health. Their goal is to reduce mental health-related stigma and discrimination by raising awareness and changing the narrative.

Ronald Reagan Day – February 6, 2022~U.S.
Ronald Reagan Day is on February 6, and it’s time to celebrate one of the most popular presidents in American history. Before serving as the 40th president of the U.S., he was a Hollywood actor, union leader, and California governor. Reagan’s economic policies were nicknamed ‘Reaganomics’, which brought about one of the strongest periods of economic growth in the country. He cut taxes, decreased social spending, increased military spending, and was also credited with helping to bring a quicker end to the Cold War.
HISTORY OF RONALD REAGAN DAY Started in 2011, Ronald Reagan Day takes place annually on February 6 in the state of California and is a day to recognize the former Governor and President Ronald. Ronald Reagan Day has been declared a state holiday in Wisconsin.
Governors in 21 states issued proclamations designating February 6 as Ronald Reagan Day on the 100th anniversary of Reagan’s birthday in 2011. Later in 2013, 40 governors issued proclamations declaring Ronald Reagan Day in their respective states. Raised in a low-income in Tampico, Illinois, Reagan graduated from Eureka College and worked as a radio sports commentator. After moving to California in 1937, he found work as an actor. He later served as the Republican governor of California from 1967 to 1975 before becoming the 40th president from 1981 to 1989.
Being the first president since Dwight D. Eisenhower to serve two full terms, Reagan began implementing new political and economic initiatives. His supply-side economic policies supported tax reduction to spur economic growth, economic deregulation, and a decrease in government spending. Regan became a highly influential voice of modern conservatism and his tenure initiated a realignment toward conservative policies in the United States.
Reagan remains one of the most popular presidents in American history. An assessment of his presidency among historians and the general public places him among the upper tier of American presidents. As president, Reagan brought about a new political and economic era. Reagan, who survived an assassination attempt during his first term as president, died at age 93 after battling Alzheimer’s disease.

Pay a Compliment Day – February 6, 2022~U.S.
Pay a Compliment Day is every year on February 6. Nothing cheers a person up quite like hearing someone say something nice about you. It’s time to return the favor on Pay a Compliment Day and although we shouldn’t need a special day to show our appreciation, most of us need a little nudge, right? We’ve often walked away from interactions wishing we had said what was in our hearts. “Will I embarrass myself?” “Is it appropriate?” All questions that plague what should be a simple articulation of the heart. Let’s redeem ourselves on Pay a Compliment Day.
HISTORY OF PAY A COMPLIMENT DAY Created by Adrienne Koopersmith in 1995, Pay a Compliment Day is for showing genuine appreciation of the people around you. The inspiration came on a cold day in Chicago when Koopersmith was riding a bus. She noticed someone waving at the bus she was on. The person seemed frantic and although they weren’t standing at a bus stop, the bus driver was kind enough to stop and let the person on. Before getting off at her stop, Koopersmith complimented the driver on his kindness. This brief but heartwarming gesture left such an indelible impression in her life that Koopersmith decided to turn the day into a holiday.
Paying an honest compliment is more difficult than it sounds. Some people are so over the top with the gesture that it loses meaning while others use them too sparingly. Only a few know how to express themselves openly and naturally.
One of our favorite compliments in history is Carl Sagan’s 1986 letter to Chuck Berry on his birthday. He wrote, “When they tell you your music will live forever, you can usually be sure they’re exaggerating. But Johnny B. Goode is on the Voyager interstellar records attached to NASA’s Voyager spacecraft–now two billion miles from earth and bound for the stars. These records will last a billion years or more. Happy 60th birthday with our admiration for the music you have given to this world…Go, Johnny, Go.”
In the spirit of Sagan’s praise, express your admiration to someone you hold dear.
Pay a Compliment Day remembers a stranger’s kindness on a bus and hopes to inspire similar, meaningful connections all the time.

National Lame Duck Day – February 6, 2022~U.S.
National Lame Duck Day, celebrated every February 6, observes the day the 20th Amendment was passed, reducing what’s known as the congressional lame-duck period or the weeks between the congressional elections and their inauguration day. During this time, elected officials on their way out of office tend to have less clout and are just waiting for their term to end, thus, they are considered lame ducks. There are other types of political lame ducks that also deserve our attention today so read on to learn more about celebrating National Lame Duck Day!
HISTORY OF NATIONAL LAME DUCK DAY In the literal sense, a lame duck is a duck that is unable to keep up with its flock or reach safety on its own — basically, it is vulnerable to predators and just waiting for the end. The first known use of this term for a person was in the 1700s with reference to a stockbroker who had defaulted on his debts.
The term made its way to the political world by the 19th century when cited in the Congressional Globe on January 14, 1863. In this political context, ‘lame duck’ refers to an elected official who is nearing the end of his or her political term and finds they have diminished influence to effectively carry out their responsibilities.
Most commonly, we see lame ducks when they have not won re-election or their term limit is expiring and they must leave office. Today, we hear this term most frequently regarding the office of the president of the United States.
Thankfully, Congress passed the 20th Amendment in 1933 in order to shorten the lame-duck period between election and inauguration. This is why a day has been set aside to observe our lame ducks. It should be a time for a meaningful transition of power. While this does happen, it is not always the case.
There have been several congressional and presidential lame-duck periods in which the outgoing official slammed down last-minute legislations, granted multiple pardons, and took politically unpopular actions.
It has been argued that the lame-duck period should be even shorter, given today’s technology and speed of business compared to prior centuries, even in the 1900s!

National Frozen Yogurt Day – February 6, 2022~U.S.
You scream, I scream, we all scream for…Frozen Yogurt? Yes! Frozen yogurt is the delicious, creamy treat we all love. Yogurt was first invented over 4,000 years ago in the Middle East and India and then slowly made its way across the world over the centuries. But it wasn’t until the 1970’s the brilliant idea of freezing yogurt (and offering a ‘healthier’ alternative) created the taste sensation we love today. Since then, though tastes have cycled from sweet to sour, frozen yogurt has secured a place in our dessert lexicon. So, on February 6, pull the lever at your favorite frozen yogurt shop to celebrate National Frozen Yogurt Day.

National Chopsticks Day – February 6, 2022~U.S.
National Chopsticks Day is held every year on February 6. Is it just us, or can you practically smell the stir fry and steamed rice already? A large part of the world’s population uses chopsticks as their utensil of choice. People in China have been deftly using chopsticks since 1200 B.C. where they were first used to cook before they became a popular tool with which to eat across East Asia. Every time you use a chopstick to eat, you engage over 50 different joints and muscles. Not only do you use your fingers and wrists but your arms and shoulders too. That’s quite the workout. And there’s so much more about the humble chopstick that the world ought to know.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL CHOPSTICKS DAY Chopsticks originated in China 5,000 years ago. According to historians, people typically cooked food in large pots that worked well to retain heat. However, it meant waiting a long while for the food to cool before one could dig in. Famished eaters discovered a way around the painful waiting period by breaking twigs off trees to retrieve bits of food. The twigs evolved into the chopsticks we know and love today.
The events that transpired in 400 B.C. also created a need for the use of chopsticks. Since food was scarce during this period, cooks would chop food into small pieces to cook quickly and save fuel. It made the use of knives at the dining table redundant where chopsticks could easily pick up bite-sized pieces of food and so, became staple utensils. They were so popular that by 500 A.D. that people in Japan, Korea, and present-day Vietnam also began using them.
The first chopsticks were made out of bamboo and looked like tweezers because they were joined at the top. They were also known as tong chopsticks but by the 10th century, the design evolved into the two separate pieces we’ve come to know today. Children in most Asian countries — and adults in others — use the tong chopsticks as training chopsticks today.
Soon, two distinct designs emerged. Chinese chopsticks were usually rectangular with blunt ends and around 10 inches long whereas chopsticks used in Japan were rounded, shorter, and came to a point.
People in the English-speaking world know these utensils as chopsticks, a name that came from the expression “chop-chop” meaning fast in Chinese Pidgin English. The original Chinese name for them however has way more character where they’re called ‘kuai-zi’ or ‘quick little fellows.’

British Yorkshire Pudding Day – February 6, 2022~U.K.
On British Yorkshire Pudding Day, the first Sunday of February, this baked pudding is honored for its centuries-long stalwart place in the British food lexicon. Yorkshire pudding was first devised as a way to conserve the fat that would drip off a roasting fowl or side of meat, catching the grease in the batter mix — eggs, flour, and milk — instead of a dripping pan, and serving the resulting dish as a part of the meal. In poorer quarters, since meat was expensive, Yorkshire puddings would be served before the main meal to dull the appetite before the sparingly served meat course.
To this day, it is traditional in Great Britain to serve Yorkshire puddings with the Sunday roast. People in the UK and around the world love the crispy and soft textures of the outside and inside of the Yorkshire pudding, respectively — hey, there wouldn’t be a holiday named after a food that wasn’t delicious, right?
HISTORY OF BRITISH YORKSHIRE PUDDING DAY National Yorkshire Pudding Day has been celebrated in Great Britain since 2007, and the dish is still a popular topic of conversation, with differing recipes and methods of service all vying for prestige. In 2008, the UK’s Royal Society for Chemistry, referring to the fact that the Yorkshire pudding is supposed to rise and become fluffy during the cooking process, had this to say — “A Yorkshire pudding isn’t a Yorkshire pudding if it is less than four inches tall.”
Research shows that the earliest printed recipe for the “dripping pudding” that would eventually become attached to the name of the northern England county probably was the one that appeared in a book called “The Whole Duty of a Woman,” published in 1737. We acknowledge and distance ourselves from the misogyny of the title, but the recipe itself is quite intriguing — describing the process of shaking the pudding pan often while the mutton above it cooks, then “turn[ing] it in a dish and serv[ing] it hot.”
To underscore the popularity of the Yorkshire pudding, take the 2012 T-Mobile UK poll that asked what respondents loved most about Britain — Yorkshire pudding was in the top ten most popular answers. So if you’ve never tried one, today’s the day, and if you’re familiar already, take this chance to spread the joy, on British Yorkshire Pudding Day

Burn Awareness Week – February 6-12, 2022~U.S.
Burn Awareness Week is observed every year during the first full week in February and takes place from February 6 to 12 this year. It is a time for organizations to mobilize safety educators to sensitize people to the subjects of burns and fire. It also raises awareness of burn prevention methods in various communities.
HISTORY OF BURN AWARENESS WEEK Burn Awareness Week is sponsored by the American Burn Association (AMA). AMA is a non-profit organization whose aim is to stimulate and advance burn-related research, education, care, prevention, and rehabilitation.
Burn treatments can be traced back to 1500 B.C. A five-day treatment regimen was found documented in the Egyptian “Ebers Papyrus”, which involved a mixture of cattle dung, beeswax, ram’s horn, and barley porridge. In 600 B.C China, extracts from tea leaves were used to treat burn injuries.
In 1828, a French surgeon known as Guillaume Dupuytren carried out a review of fifty burn patients, from which he developed a burn depth classification that remains relevant today. In addition to this, he was the first to recognize gastric and duodenal ulceration as a consequence of severe burns.
In the 20th century, the occurrences of major fires inspired and drove research that gave birth to a better understanding of the pathophysiology of burns. These fires include the Rialto Theatre House Fire of 1921 and the Cocoanut Grove Fire of 1942.
In the United States, one person sustains a burn every sixty seconds. In fact, every year, about 400,000 people receive medical treatment for burns. Though most burns occur at home, 10% happen in the workplace.
There are three major types of burns, which are thermal or contact burns, electrical burns, and chemical burns. Thermal burns are burns caused by contact with hot objects or liquids, including fires and explosions. Electrical burns can occur through direct or non-direct contact with electrical currents. Chemical burns are brought on by exposure to corrosive materials or acids, such as industrial cleaners.

Bob Marley's Birthday – February 6, 2022~Other
In the 36 short years of Bob Marley’s life, his iconic music evolved from ska to reggae to rocksteady, and eventually into a blend of all three that, along with his wild dreadlocks, became his signature style. On his birthday, February 6th, join us for a look at his band’s worldwide tours, as well as his personal life in Europe, the U.S., and (of course) his native Jamaica.
WHEN IS BOB MARLEY'S BIRTHDAY 2022? On Bob Marley’s Birthday on February 6, the world celebrates his unparalleled artistry and its influence on global culture. His music remarked on oppressors and called for social change, accomplishing this with empowering lyrics and beats that are timeless.
HISTORY OF BOB MARLEY'S BIRTHDAY Bob Marley was born on February 6, 1945, in St. Ann Parish, Jamaica, and was given the birth name Nesta Robert Marley. His father – Norval Sinclair Marley, was a white British naval captain and nearly 60 years old. Bob’s mother – Cedella, was a black 19-year-old country villager. Due to this racial duality, Marley was bullied and given the nickname ‘White Boy’ in a derogatory context by his neighbors. He said in his later interviews that the experience actually helped him adopt the philosophy: “I’m not on the white man’s side, or the Black man’s side. I’m on God’s side.”
His career took off when he founded a music group with his friends Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston, called ‘The Wailers.’ In February 1966, Bob married Rita Marley and it was she who introduced him to the concept of Rastafariansim. This heavily influenced Marley’s musical style, especially on the reggae front. In collaboration with Lee Scratch Perry, The Wailers went on to produce some of their best tracks like ‘400 Years,’ ‘Duppy Conqueror,’ ‘Small Axe,’ and ‘Soul Rebel.’
In the 1960s, The Wailers soared to popularity in Jamaica, and in 1972 they signed a contract with ‘Label Island Records.’ The band became an international sensation with the release of their album ‘Catch a Fire’ in 1973. Their next album ‘Burnin’ featured the songs ‘I Shot The Sheriff,’ and ‘Get Up, Stand Up,’ which gathered cult followings. In 1974, The Wailers decided to pursue solo careers and disbanded.
Bob continued to hone and create his personal artistry, but also spent much of the 1970s advocating cultural understanding in Jamaica. In 1976, during one of his peace concerts, an assassination attempt was made on his life, along with his wife and manager. All of them survived and Marley showed up two days later for his next gig.
In 1977, following a wound on his toe which wouldn’t heal, Bob Marley consulted a doctor and was diagnosed with cancer. The physician suggested the removal of his toe, which Bob declined as it went against his Rastafarian beliefs. The next few years were a time of massive success for him; Marley was the only international artist to be part of the independence ceremony of Zimbabwe. He also planned an American tour to reach blacks living within the U.S. Unfortunately, the cancer had spread to other vital organs of his body. On May 11, 1981, Bob Marley died at the age of 36 in Miami Hospital. His legacy, philosophy, and music live on, with Marley himself revered as a cultural icon around the world.

National Periodic Table Day – February 7, 2022~U.S.
Since 2016, National Periodic Table Day has been celebrated on February 7 to pay tribute to the chart pasted in science classrooms that saved us from flunking high school chemistry! The idea to dedicate a day to toast the periodic table and its scientific inventions was conceived in the clever mind of a chemistry teacher, Mr. David T. Steineker, and we cannot help but assume that he had some sneaky ulterior (read: academic) motives behind it. Whatever the reasons, on this day, we celebrate and glorify the periodic table and its scientists in being the critical building elements (literally) for the continuing discoveries in science.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL PERIODIC TABLE DAY If it wasn’t for the periodic table, we wouldn’t have passed our chemistry exams as easily as we did. Although, come to think of it, if it wasn’t for the blocked chart, we wouldn’t have found chemistry so tough in the first place either! But by the same token, we cannot forget the breakthroughs and advancements that the periodic table has brought to the field of chemistry.
On February 7, 2016, an author, inventor, and chemistry teacher at Jefferson County Public School in Kentucky, Mr. David T. Steineker, founded the National Periodic Table Day to toast the publishing of scientist John Newlands’ periodic table of elements on February 7, 1863. Russian chemist and scientist, who is best remembered for formulating the present-day periodic table in 1869, Dmitri Mendeleev, was also born a day before February 7. Mr. Steineker came up with the idea to give it a day to remember and challenge the discoveries of the periodic table of elements for which more than one scientist has been credited for its inception since the 19th century.
It is unethical to not recognize the first groundwork of the periodic table that was laid out by German chemist Johann Dobereiner back in 1817. Together with J.J. Berzelius, the Swedish chemist, Doberiener discovered the first catalyst by experimenting with hydrogen ignition and potassium powder. He organized elements with similar properties into groups of three, which formed the basis for modifications by other scientists.
Then came John Newlands who was an English chemist. He published the first periodic table in 1863, which organized 56 elements into 11 groups. While Newlands’ periodic table was slightly flawed, he was the first scientist to introduce the ‘Law of Octaves.’ National Periodic Table Day, thus, honors the scientists who created a simplified model that gives us an easy reference and helps chemists anticipate the behavior of elements within a glance.

Rose Day – February 7, 2022~U.S.
Rose Day on February 7 marks the beginning of Valentine’s week. On this romantic day, roses are gifted to that special someone to celebrate love and affection. It is believed that Victorians began the practice of exchanging roses with their loved ones to communicate unspoken feelings. On Rose Day, you can give your loved ones red, pink, yellow, orange, white, lavender, and blue roses. Every rose signifies a different emotion. You can also celebrate Rose Day by wearing any of these colors, planting a rose plant, or even buying a piece of jewelry in rose gold.
HISTORY OF ROSE DAY When it comes to how Rose Day began, little information is known. There’s no way of knowing who came up with the idea to celebrate the day, but we know why we celebrate it. Rose Day forms part of the celebrations of Valentine’s week. However, the history behind the red rose is long and interesting.
The earliest records of rose cultivation date back almost 5,000 years, and indicate that the flower was first cultivated in the Far East. Rose cultivation started in China but soon they were also being cultivated in Rome and Greece.
It is thought that roses were seen as a luxurious plant and were distributed among the rich who would then give them to artists to inspire them. Eventually, roses also found their way into the medicine of the time. Roses went from being the symbols of hope, peace, and love to a symbol of war. In England during the 15th century, roses were used to represent their army.
Even though the rose had a bloody history, it is celebrated as a flower representing love and companionship today. Even though the world is obsessed with automation, technology, and being online, days that celebrate romance will always hold a special place in the hearts of all. Whether it’s Valentine’s Day or Rose Day, you should try to make things as special and wonderful as you can for your loved ones — and a rose is the perfect way to communicate your deepest feelings. Roses really are an international symbol of love. It doesn’t matter where in the world you may be, if you present a loved one with a rose, you are conveying a message of love.

National Sickie Day – February 7, 2022~U.K.
Known as National Sickie Day in the U.K., the first Monday of every February is statistically the day when most workers are likely to call in sick, according to research first conducted by British law firm ELAS in 2011. Experts attribute this to a combination of gloomy weather, post-holiday blues, and seasonal illnesses. Unsurprisingly, depression and anxiety run high during the winter months. Although the term ‘sickie’ implies false pretenses, labor and mental-health advocates argue that the stigma around mental-health issues leads many people to use other, more ‘legitimate’ illnesses as their stated reasons for staying home.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL SICKIE DAY National Sickie Day was first coined in 2011 by a British law firm ELAS after they published research showing that the first Monday in February is the most likely day for workers in the U.K. to call in sick. Reasons (legitimate and otherwise) range from an illness or a hangover (it’s the first Monday after Dry January, after all) to staying up late to watch the American Super Bowl.
In 2020, around 600,000 workers called in sick, costing the British economy close to 45 million pounds. However, experts argue that taking a day off may actually be more productive than going to work sick, where the employee is likely to spread illness and function at reduced capacity.
A 2015 survey showed that workers calling in sick with a mental-health issue were more likely to lie to their employers than those with a physical ailment. Doctors and mental-health professionals argue that employers must emphasize the importance of mental health and reduce the stigma around it. Some employers show little sympathy for physical illness too, with only 42% of senior managers viewing the flu as a reason to stay home.
Although Monday is the most popular day of the week for calling in sick, in recent years, other Mondays throughout the year have supplanted the first of February for the highest absence rates, making the title of National Sickie Day less accurate. However, the ‘holiday’ remains a popular talking point and excuse for people to take a day off, knowing others are likely doing the same.

National Fettuccine Alfredo Day – February 7, 2022~U.S.
February 7 is National Fettuccine Alfredo Day. You don’t get the status as one of the most popular pasta dishes created without good reason. Fettuccine Alfredo is an Italian (obviously) pasta dish consisting of fresh fettuccine tossed with butter and Parmesan cheese. It’s simple yet delicious. It’s so tasty that it deserves a day all to itself. Whether you are dining out or doing a spot of home cooking, make sure that Fettuccine Alfredo is on the menu on February 7.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL FETTUCCINE ALFREDO DAY The beginnings of this dish can be traced back as far as the 15th century, where there are records of Italian cook Martino da Como cooking pasta with butter and cheese which was known as “macaroni romaneschi” or Roman pasta.
The true inventor of fettuccine alfredo though is Alfredo Di Lelio. The Italian restaurateur was trying to entice his wife, Ines, to eat after giving birth to their first child Armando in 1908. He created a recipe that included a blend of noodles, cheese, and butter, and in turn, created a delicious creamy texture.
Fettuccine Alfredo became a go-to meal for his wife and because the dish turned out so good, Di Lelio added it to the menu in his mother’s restaurant, Piazza Rosa. The dish became a massive hit and Piazza Rosa became known as the birthplace of Fettuccine Alfredo. In 1914, Alfredo Di Lelio opened up his own restaurant in Rome called “Alfredo” and later opened up another restaurant with his son in 1950. In 1977, he opened up a version of the restaurant in New York City, where it became a popular hit.
The dish first made its way to America in the 1920s. American travelers were returning home and reporting on it to such an extent that the dish and Alfredo’s restaurant featured in multiple magazines and guidebooks. The dish’s popularity has only grown since, with chains such as Olive Garden popularizing their own version. By 2005 the dish was so popular that it was given its own holiday and the first National Fettuccine Alfredo Day was celebrated.

Independence Day Grenada – February 7, 2022~Grenada
Independence Day of Grenada is a public holiday and is celebrated every year on February 7. The day is also celebrated as Grenada’s National Day. This holiday marks Grenada’s independence from Britain on February 7, 1974. If Independence Day of Grenada falls on a weekend, the following Monday is not considered a holiday. The day is observed in various cities across the country with colorful parades and official ceremonies. People dress up, visit their loved ones, make merry, and remember their struggle for freedom. On Independence Day of Grenada, shops, schools, and banks remain closed. Tourists also visit Grenada to partake in the lively occasion.
HISTORY OF INDEPENDENCE DAY GRENADA Before the Europeans arrived in the Americas, Grenada was home to the indigenous peoples from South America. The island of Grenada was sighted by Christopher Columbus in 1498 during his third voyage to the Americas. Since then, Grenada has been under various European occupations since the start of colonization of the new world in the 16th century. In 1649, France assumed full control of the island, becoming one of the wealthiest colonies due to its bountiful sugar production. Following French defeat in the Seven Years’ War, the Treaty of Paris ceded Grenada to Great Britain in 1763. Having overcome a brief rebellion by pro-French forces, Grenada remained a British colony for more than 200 years.
Movements toward independence sprung up in the 1950s and in March 1967, Grenada became an associated state. This status helped them get full autonomy over the nation’s internal affairs. Grenada won its independence from the United Kingdom on February 7, 1974, and Eric Gairy became the first prime minister of the country.
The newly independent country became a member of the Commonwealth while Queen Elizabeth continued to function as the Head of State. In March 1979, Eric Gairy’s government was overthrown in a bloodless coup d’état by the Marxist–Leninist New Jewel Movement. This established the People’s Revolutionary Government. The new government was headed by Maurice Bishop as Prime Minister. Bishop was later arrested and executed by members of the People’s Revolutionary Army, which led to an American invasion in October 1983. Since then, Grenada has returned to electoral democracy and has remained politically stable.
