e-Day – February 7, 2022~U.S.
Whip out your TI-87 calculator this e-Day, February 7, and spot the little button that bolsters logarithmic and exponential functions on the daily. While you may not be too familiar with e, you’re surely acquainted with its more famous cousin, pi. Just like pi, e is an inexplicably recurring number in the world of mathematics. It has a never-ending chain of decimal points, the beginning of which is 2.718281828, and on and on it goes. This holiday is celebrated on 2/7 for the obvious reason that the date holds the same digits as e rounded to the nearest tenth.
HISTORY OF E-DAY This complex algebraic riddle has been toyed with for over 400 years but has only fully been understood and defined for about 300. It first appeared in 1618 as a vague reference in the papers of Scottish mathematician John Napier. In a roundabout way, Napier hinted at the potential for a recurring constant by sharing a number of logarithms that he had solved using the number yet, infuriating many of his readers, he did not share the number itself.
Later, in 1683, Jacob Bernoulli was officially credited for unveiling the analytical gem when he attempted to find the answer to a generic logarithmic expression, the answer to which was — you guessed it — e. For a brief time, followers of Bernoulli obscurely named the number b in their frequent correspondence. That was until Leonhard Euler ascribed the first letter of his surname to the constant and definitively named it the base of all logarithmic expressions in 1731. To this day, the constant is called e in remembrance of Euler.
While e-Day cannot be traced back to any particular calculus enthusiast and we aren’t quite sure how long it’s been celebrated, we can understand the logic behind assigning this weight-bearing numeral to its digit twin. In 2018, a University of Portland student realized that the numeric date was 2/7/18, which also happens to be the first four digits of the beloved constant. Analytical minds all over the world were smugly pleased by this observation and constant e was perhaps more celebrated than ever before as many math-inclined minds discussed the coincidental alignment of such a calendar match-up.

Ballet Day – February 7, 2022~U.S.
Ballet Day is every year on February 7, and we can’t wait to celebrate this elegant and theatrical dance form. When the ethereal outfits, passionate dancers, and classical music come together, it uplifts the spirit like no other form of artistic expression. The grace in ballet is undeniable and we tend to forget the unbelievable athleticism and strength needed to achieve that. Female ballerinas can carry three times their body weight while dancing on the tip of their big toe. Male ballerinas are capable of lifting one and a half tons during a single performance. These are just one of several reasons why ballet leaves us starstruck so let’s tip our hats this Ballet Day.
HISTORY OF BALLET DAY Great art transcends time and space. As one of the most recognizable dance forms in the world, ballet is a testament to this. Its splendor has evolved through the ages and continues to reinvent itself even today.
Ballet began in Italy and France during the 15th century. It was popular among the nobility and was typically a part of extravagant events in palaces or mansions. Ballet was common during royal weddings or at the birthday celebrations of powerful people. In the 1400s, ballet became a coveted social event — an indicator of refinement and social status.
However, It was a different kind of ballet at the time where dancers went from one elegant pose to another but on a flat foot. Around this time, the element of pageantry became an integral part of ballet and women wore tight corsets and huge wigs. Men instead, wore tights and lightweight clothing to enable better movement.
With King Louis XIV’s reign, ballet would reach new heights of artistic achievement. A dedicated patron of the art form, he opened the Academie Royale de Danse, or the first ballet school in 1661.
Ballet movements became technical during the Romantic period where the fluidity of movement took precedence over other aspects. In 1832, the world of ballet would change definitively. It was a year when Marie Taglioni first performed “La Sylphide en pointe” and danced on the tips of the toes. Although she is the first recognized en pointe dancer, many believe that other performers had already been dancing this way for some time. By the 1960s, the stunning en pointe style took the ballet world by storm, and so, it remained.
Ballet is one of the most celebrated and respected dance forms in the world today. People everywhere love it for its poise and drama. If you haven’t already, experience the magic of ballet first-hand on Ballet Day.

Extraterrestrial Culture Day – February 8, 2022~U.S.
Extraterrestrial Culture Day is celebrated on the second Tuesday of February and takes place on February 8 this year. The day exists to “celebrate and honor all past, present, and future extraterrestrial visitors in ways to enhance relationships among all citizens of the cosmos, known and unknown,” according to the bill that introduced the day. On March 21, 2003, New Mexico’s general assembly passed the House Memorial 44 along with the establishment of the holiday. Although Extraterrestrial Culture Day specifically originated in New Mexico, today is celebrated in places far from its borders. Any person interested in the mysteriousness of the universe and alien life may be seen celebrating the day.
HISTORY OF EXTRATERRESTRIAL CULTURE DAY We should be thanking State Representative Daniel Foley of Roswell for introducing the day with House Bill 766. The bill designated the day to be celebrated every second Thursday of February, but when the memorial was passed, the holiday was changed to every second Tuesday of February instead. According to the memorial, the day was created to honor extraterrestrials who have contributed to the worldwide recognition of New Mexico through their many and ongoing visitations, sightings, and unexplained mysteries.
Extraterrestrial life has also been attributed to technological developments, experiments, as well as explorations. The world of Hollywood has also been influenced by alien life, generating storylines that typically portray the accomplishments of alien beings throughout the universe. Sounds bizarre, right? The reason why Foley decided to introduce the day can be traced back to 1947, to a spot about 75 miles from Roswell. At this spot, rancher Mac Brazel found dirt in his sheep pasture.
He called up the local sheriff after finding metal sticks that were taped together, heavy paper-like material that seemed glossy, and bits of foil and plastic reflectors. Roswell Army Force Base showed up at the scene with armored trucks to take away the debris following a call from the sheriff.
On July 8, 1947, the Roswell Daily Record printed a front-page story titled “RAAF Captures Flying Saucer On Ranch in Roswell Region.” The next day, RAAF made a statement that a weather balloon had been found instead of a flying saucer that everyone claims it to be. However, witnesses of the debris think otherwise. They believe that the debris looked nothing like a weather balloon, but more of an alien-like flying saucer.

Laugh and Get Rich Day – February 8, 2022~U.S.
Laugh and Get Rich Day is celebrated every year on February 8. It is a day to laugh and to enjoy the many benefits that laughter brings. The biggest benefit of laughter is that it improves our health. Laughing can elevate our mood, lower stress and blood pressure, and strengthen the immune system. In this way, laughter makes us rich because health is wealth, after all! But laughter can also contribute to our financial gains by enriching our professional lives. Those who laugh often tend to be happier — happy workers are more productive and are liked by coworkers.
HISTORY OF LAUGH AND GET RICH DAY Laugh and Get Rich Day is a holiday that is shrouded in mystery. We don’t know who or when it was created, and even the purpose of the celebrations is unknown. However, the general understanding is that this is a holiday that encourages people to laugh to realize that if we’re happy, we have all of the riches we will ever need. Therefore, on February 8 every year, people come together to share jokes, laugh, and spend quality time with each other.
What most of us might not realize is that babies can laugh before they’re even close to speaking. Infants as young as 17 days old can laugh way before they begin to make babbling sounds. They laugh when they find something amusing or during playtime. That’s how ingrained laughter is in us! In fact, a number of scientific studies show that during a 10-minute conversation, the average person will likely laugh anywhere from 5.5 to 5.8 times. Something else that science has taught us is that even the act of smiling, regardless of whether it’s genuine or not, can considerably improve a person’s mood. So, if you’re having a bad day and want to feel better, just crack a smile.
Laughter has also inspired humans to create the genre of comedy, which is designed to bring us humor in the form of literature, films and T.V. shows, jokes, and even music. They make us feel joy and inspire us to laugh — and that is why we tune into our favorite sitcoms or comedy movies when we are feeling down.

National Boy Scout Day – February 8, 2022~U.S.
On February 8 we celebrate National Boy Scout Day to honor those who are trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. Founded in 1910, by American W.D. Boyce, the Boy Scouts of America has helped shape many of our nation’s leaders. According to legend, Boyce was lost on a foggy street in London when an unknown Scout helped him by guiding him back to his hotel. When the boy refused a tip, explaining that he was only doing his duty as a Scout, Boyce was inspired to bring the teachings of the British Boy Scout Association back to the U.S.
HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL BOY SCOUT DAY
Do a good turn for someone else The Boy Scouts are based on the idea of doing good deeds. Celebrate National Boy Scouts Day by helping someone in need, donating to a good cause or simply committing a random act of kindness.
Learn a new skill Earn your own Merit Badge by learning a new skill in one of the Merit badge categories. Take a look at the Merit Badge page on the Boy Scouts of America site and choose an interesting badge. (Coin collecting, anyone?!) Then follow the requirements listed. You may not receive an actual badge, but you will have learned something new and probably had fun doing it.
Go camping Camping is an important part of being a Boy Scout and a great way to celebrate National Boy Scouts Day. Camping helps develop self-reliance and resourcefulness and promotes feelings of wellness from being surrounded by nature. So, gather the or a few friends, load up the car or truck with your tents and sleeping bags and head to the nearest camping site.
WHY NATIONAL BOY SCOUT DAY IS IMPORTANT
Merit badges are a great concept The purpose of the Merit badge program is to allow Scouts some time for career exploration. Boy Scouts earn badges by showing they have done or learned something in a specific area of study. There are over 135 different badges that can be earned in the areas of sports, crafts, science, trades, business and future careers.
Cool people are Boy Scouts Some of our greatest national icons have been part of the Boy Scouts of America. Martin Luther King and John F. Kennedy were Boy Scouts. Steven Spielberg and Neil Armstrong were both Eagle Scouts. Michael Jordan was a Cub Scout and Jimmy Buffett was Life Scout. In total, 5 United States presidents and 180 U.S. astronauts have been involved in Scouting programs.
It can have a lasting impact According to the Boy Scouts of America, participating in a Scouting program can have a lasting effect on boys as they grow into men. 83% have stated that the values they learned as Scouts still impact their lives today. Of those involved for at least 5 years with the Boy Scouts, 87% feel their self-confidence can be linked to scouting. And half of those surveyed claim Boy Scouts helped them on their current career path.

Get set to feel the wind in your face, the line in your hand, and the liberating feeling one gets when flying a kite. It’s National Kite-Flying Day after all. Did you know kites have a lot to do with lift, thrust, drag, and wind pressure? Probably not. It’s ok. On February 8 simply grab a kite and some string to get started. Then, find an open field, start running, and hope for the best. Oh, and pray for wind.

Propose Day – February 8, 2022~India
Propose Day is celebrated on February 8. Propose Day is usually the second day of Valentine’s Week and a day after Rose Day. Although Valentine’s Day is observed all around the world, Propose Day is celebrated as a day in Valentine’s week. It is a day to “pop the question” to your better half and show them your unconditional love. This holiday is celebrated in India and numerous couples — prospective, old, and new, take the opportunity to propose or renew their proposal, especially using roses.
HISTORY OF PROPOSE DAY Rose is considered as the flower of love and so Valentine’s Week kicks off with Rose Day on February 7. A day after the given rose has helped you express your feelings, Propose Day comes next on February 8. Even though Valentine’s day is widely celebrated, this specific holiday is only celebrated in India. This day marks the celebration of love by proposing your love to your significant other.
Proposing to someone you truly love might seem like a difficult task at first, though it is simple and easy. Marriage proposals can prove to be the hardest but they are special and in some cases, they happen only once in a lifetime. If you and your partner have been dating for a while and gradually reach the stage where you are sure to spend the rest of your lives together, then you have got to make your proposal memorable. In good and bad times, for better or for worse, your proposal vows will hold a special memory that will last a lifetime.
Proposing to your partner with the right technique can undoubtedly win his or her heart instantly. Some couples have used the candlelight proposal, beach proposal, unboxing proposal, the first place we met proposal, and many other unique styles. Whether you choose traditional or creative techniques, the only thing that matters is that you propose to your love interest. It does not have to be extravagant – you can also keep it simple with words like “I Love You”.

Read In The Bathtub Day – February 9, 2022~U.S.
National Read In The Bathtub Day is a yearly observance on February 9. Reading a book in a warm bath guarantees a calm feeling of relief as the literature therapeutically works its magic. You don’t have to worry about what noises are out there or any disturbances while you’re in the bath. You just get to focus on what you’re reading for as long as you want. The relaxation and scented bath would grant you an unforgettable experience!
HISTORY OF READ IN THE BATHTUB DAY The origins of reading in the bath possibly originated from the Roman Empire around 500 B.C. The Romans loved their baths, and they were the first to thoroughly embrace the culture of bathing. Those who owned the bathing facilities usually decorated the rooms as a mini or full library filled with scrolls. It was a way of fitting every luxury into one setting, possibly to save expenses. Following the collapse of the Roman Empire, sanitation and bathing disappeared subsequently in the Dark Ages.
People then went back to bathing in rivers or lakes and using perfume as a substitute. However, the tradition reemerged somehow and was adopted to this date. John Michael Kohler, Jacob Vollrath, and one other man started up a factory in 1873. The company focused solely on manufacturing iron and steel products but later on changed its approach when Kohler invented the first modern bathtub. In 1883, Kohler used a cast-iron horse trough covered in enamel and added four decorative legs for the bathtub to stand.
In 1928, The Crane Company introduced various colorful bathroom features that are prominent in our bathrooms today. The structure of the bathtub makes it a great place to lay back and enjoy a good book. However, the biggest con of reading in the bath is that water and paper are not friends. So reading in the bathtub is a somewhat risky routine. Because it’s unpredictable and you don’t know when your favorite book might just splat into the water. To slightly avoid this use a bath tray or caddy, to hold the book or other items like your phone, tablet, and preferred drink.
Besides paper, there is also online reading. Since the invention of technological devices, there has been a massive increase in bathroom reading. But electrical devices can be dangerous in the bathroom if not used appropriately. To make a DIY waterproof phone case, just put your phone or tablet inside of a plastic zipper bag and you’ll still be able to scroll through the pages as you read. You can also buy waterproof cases online or at most electronic stores.

National Toothache Day – February 9, 2022~U.S.
National Toothache Day, which falls on February 9, serves as a kind reminder of the benefits and overall importance of dental hygiene. Toothaches, scientifically known as odontalgia, are exactly what they sound like, the pain generated from either one or multiple teeth. A toothache can make it difficult to eat, sleep, or sometimes even talk. While they are not worth celebrating, we all can hear up the ways to stop them for good.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL TOOTHACHE DAY While the origins of National Toothache Day are not clear, the unofficial holiday serves to remind people that looking out for your own oral well-being is of utmost importance to live a happy, healthy, and long life.
However, the history of the science that does tackle toothaches does go a bit farther. Dentistry is one of the oldest medical professions, with evidence being found as far back as 7000 BC. However, it wasn’t until 5000 B.C. that descriptions related to diseases related to teeth were discovered.
By the eighteenth century, dentistry had become a more defined and refined profession, reaching an important cornerstone when Pierre Fauchard, a French surgeon, published his influential book, The Surgeon Dentist, a Treatise on Teeth, which defined a comprehensive system for caring for and treating teeth, up to implementing dental fillings and discovering that sugar was a major factor in tooth decay.
In 1859, twenty-six dentists met in Niagara Falls, New York to form an overseeing entity they deemed the American Dental Association, ADA, composed of a national representative organization of dentists dedicated to encouraging high professional standards and scientific research, as well as trying to reach the general population about the importance of dental hygiene.
In 1873, Colgate had mass-produced the first toothpaste, and mass-produced toothbrushes followed suit, assuring everyone had some sort of access to tooth-cleaning products. However, good brushing habits were not mainstream in America until after the end of World War II, when soldiers stationed abroad brought the concept of proper dental hygiene back to their home country, and now, between straightening, whitening's, and much more processes, people give their teeth the attention they deserve.

National Bagel and Lox Day – February 9, 2022~U.S.
National Bagel and Lox Day is celebrated on February 9 to recognize a popular Jewish-American bagel combination. Bagel is a type of bread that is made by boiling and baking to create a soft inside and crispy outside. The bread has a ring shape with a hole at the center that makes it easier to cook. It is famously served with Lox and schmear — cream cheese. The bread originated in Poland during the 17th century and was introduced to America by the Jews many years later. Today, the bagel market is producing billions of dollars each year for the U.S.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL BAGEL AND LOX DAY The earliest reference to bagel bread was made in an Arabic cookbook in the 13th century. The book described a bread that was boiled then baked just as bagels are made today. Today, we know that bagels are linked to the Jewish community from Poland in the 17th century and lox emerging from Scandinavian fishermen who preserved salmon in saltwater brine.
Bagels and Lox are a scrumptious combination that is usually served for breakfast or brunch. The combination was made famous by Jewish immigrants in New York City. The famous American wheat bread is made into a ring shape to allow better cooking and transportation to stores. The bread offers a soft-chewy texture due to being boiled then baked. Bakers can pack the bread effortlessly by putting a string or rope through the hole in the center of the bread.
The word ‘lox’ is derived from the Yiddish word ‘laks,’ which translates to ‘salmon.’ The U.S. recognizes lox as thinly sliced salmon that has been cured and brined. Bagels and lox are served together with cream cheese — popularly called ‘schmear’ which translates to ‘spread’ in German. Bagels and lox are served as a sandwich famously emerging in the mid-1800s. During this time, barrels of salted salmon were transported to the East Coast making the dish popular.
In 2018, a division of Bimbo Bakeries in the U.S. had taken it upon themselves to move the National Bagel and Lox Day from February 9 to January 15. They claimed that National Pizza Day and National Bagel and Lox Day occurred on the same day and moving them apart would avoid the competition. Even with their efforts, many people chose to observe the holiday on its original date.

Chocolate Day – February 9, 2022~India
Chocolate Day is celebrated every year on February 9 as a part of the Valentine’s Week celebrations in India. On this day, loved ones gift each other chocolates and hope that their relationship always remains sweet. Chocolates are some of the most well-loved delicacies. It has enjoyed unwavering popularity. Chocolates can be consumed as a drink, an edible bar, in desserts, or even as a flavoring. Chocolates are a favorite among children and adults alike. Chocolate Day is celebrated in some form or the other throughout the year but this day is a celebration of chocolates being used as gifts between lovers.
HISTORY OF CHOCOLATE DAY The history of chocolate consumption goes back around 2,500 years. The Aztecs had recently discovered liquid chocolate and believed that the god of wisdom, Quetzalcoatl, had blessed them with it. Cocoa seeds were considered so valuable that they were even used as a form of currency. Back in those days, flavorings in chocolate were scarce and it was consumed as a bitter drink. Chocolates would in fact be sugar-free until the 16th century when Europeans started adding sugar to them. This made chocolate more palatable and quickly caught on in the markets. It became one of many households’ favorite treats.
Many popular present-day chocolate companies started their operations in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Cadbury was founded in England in 1868 and today it is one of the leading chocolate brands. 25 years later Milton S Hershey started Hershey’s which is now one of the biggest and best-known chocolate brands in the world. Nestlé began its operations in the 1860s and has branched out to become one of the largest food conglomerates in the world. What started off as a drink took shape into a currency and has today become one of the biggest industries that not only generates incomes and employees hundreds of thousands of people across the world but produces food items that are loved by so many of us! Chocolate Day also celebrates the incredible versatility of this food ingredient.
On Chocolate Day lovers give each other heart-shaped chocolates as a symbol of love. Gifting chocolates to loved ones removes all the tensions and sorrows and improves the sweetness of the relationship.

National Pizza Day – February 9, 2022~U.S.
Join us on February 9 as we celebrate National Pizza Day! It’s hard to imagine that before World War II, pizza was little known outside of Italy or Italian immigrant communities. This cheesy disc went from a niche cultural meal to the star of the show anywhere it turns up! Let’s hear it for pizza!
HISTORY OF NATIONAL PIZZA DAY Though flatbreads with toppings were consumed by ancient Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks, the modern birthplace of the pizza is southwestern Italy’s Campania region, home to Naples. Founded around 600 BC as a Greek settlement, Naples in the 1700s and early 1800s was a thriving waterfront city. Technically an independent kingdom, it was notorious for its throngs of working poor, or lazzaroni. These Neapolitans required inexpensive food that could be consumed quickly. Pizza — flatbreads with toppings that can be eaten for every meal — fulfilled this need. These early pizzas featured tasty toppings such as tomatoes, cheese, oil, anchovies, and garlic. More well off Italian authors judged Naples’ innovation, often calling their eating habits disgusting.
In 1861, Italy finally unified, and King Umberto I and Queen Margherita visited Naples in 1889. Legend says that the traveling pair became bored with their steady diet of French cuisine and asked for an assortment of pizzas from the city’s Pizzeria Brandi, founded in 1760. The variety the queen enjoyed the most was called pizza mozzarella, a pie topped with the soft white cheese, red tomatoes, and green basil — much resembling the Italian flag. Since then, this particular choice of toppings has been dubbed the Margherita pizza.
However, even with the Queen’s love for the dish, pizza would remain little known in Italy beyond Naples’ borders until the 1940s. Across the sea, immigrants to the United States from Naples were replicating their flatbreads in New York and other American cities. They were coming for factory jobs, but accidentally made a culinary statement. Relatively quickly, the flavors and aromas of pizza began to intrigue non-Neapolitans and non-Italians alike.

Did you know that the brownie recipe has been around for more than 200 years? That means that people have been savoring this heavenly delight before we were even born. National Cream Cheese Day is a holiday dedicated to this dessert that we all love.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL CREAM CHEESE BROWNIE DAY There are several stories on the origins of chocolate brownies. One of the stories is that in 1893, Bertha Palmer, an affluent socialite wanted something special baked for the ladies while they attended the Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition. She asked the chef of Palmer House Hotel, which was owned by her husband, to make something similar to a cake, but only smaller. And thus, the Palmer House brownies were born.
However, the term “brownie” would only come up years later in 1896 in the book, “Boston Cooking School Book,” written by Fannie Farmer. In 1899, the first-known recipe of the chocolate brownie was printed in “Machias Cookbook,” and by 1907, the brownie had become a well-known dessert and started to become popular among people of all ages. Another theory holds that brownies were invented in the town of Bangor, Maine.
Over the years, many versions and varieties of brownies have come up. Brownies are enjoyed with peanut butter, marshmallows, etc. However, one of the most popular among these is the cream cheese brownie. Cream cheese, which started emerging in the 1500s, is a delicious dairy product obtained by mixing milk and cream. And when this is combined with chocolaty brownies, the result is an explosion of sweetness and creaminess and leaves your taste buds wanting more.
Though the exact origins are not known, National Cream Cheese Brownie Day has been celebrated on February 9, and is a day dedicated to this tasty dessert that is a favorite of millions worldwide.

National Umbrella Day – February 10, 2022~U.S.
Dolly Parton once said that if you want the rainbow, you’ve got to put up with the rain. Although she never said anything about how to put up with the rain, for generations, the method-of-choice has been the umbrella. As part of many cultures since ancient times, umbrellas have a storied history worth commemorating. So on February 10, we celebrate National Umbrella Day!

Youth Day Cameroon – February 11, 2022~Cameroon
Youth Day in Cameroon on February 11 is observed by children and youth from the country’s 10 regions. This commemoration emphasizes this new generation’s ability and commitment to contribute to the creation of a prosperous and stable tomorrow.
Youths have shown their strong resilience and potential despite four years of conflict in the English-speaking territories, sustained periods of civil unrest and displacement, violent extremism in the Far North Region, and a global pandemic with significant economic implications.
HISTORY OF YOUTH DAY CAMEROON Youth Day in Cameroon is marked by parades, cultural dances, singing, and sports events by youths. Cameroon’s Youth Day can be viewed as a national festival aimed at aligning young people with community building, national pride, and responsible citizenship beliefs.
The West Cameroon government created Youth Day to replace the country’s national day, which was observed on October 26 before reunification occurred. West Cameroon’s Prime Minister John Ngu Foncha suggested dedicating West Cameroon’s national day to its youths, on whom the future state hinged, less than a year after obtaining independence by embracing French Cameroon.
Although it is unclear whether this recommendation was contested in the assembly, it was implemented the following year. The inaugural “Youth and Sport” day was held in West Cameroon on October 26, 1962. The day was held in high regard by West Cameroonian politicians, local officials, state officials, and the general public when it first began.
The Foncha government announced its intention to commit the Plebiscite Day to the country’s youth by the end of 1963. This meant that the Youth Day would no longer be held on October 26 and would instead be held on February 11. By 1966, the Cameroonian federal government had recognized the West Cameroonian festival as a national holiday.
On this special day, we urge all youths, in all of their amazing diversity, to take meaningful steps to promote peace and contribute to the advancement of their communities, and learn the skills needed for life and success in the future economy.

World Day of the Sick – February 11, 2022~International
World Day of the Sick is a Catholic Church awareness day, or observance, on February 11, aimed at praying and sharing, sacrificing one’s suffering for the welfare of the church, and urging everyone to see the face of Christ in his or her ailing brother or sister. The day falls on the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, and it is an important occasion for individuals in the Catholic health ministry to reflect on caring for those who are sick as well as those who care for them.
HISTORY OF WORLD DAY OF THE SICK In 1992, Pope John Paul II established the day to urge people to pray for individuals who are ill and their caretakers. The pope showed signs of Parkinson’s disease in 1991, but it wasn’t verified until 2001, therefore, it’s notable that he opted to establish the World Day of the Sick barely a year after his diagnosis. In his apostolic letter “Salvifici Doloris”, the pope wrote extensively on the subject of suffering and considered that it has always been a redeeming process through Christ.
On February 11, 1993, the first World Day of the Sick was observed. Our Lady of Lourdes, a term referring to the Virgin Mary in honor of apparitions alleged to have been seen in and around Lourdes, France, by a little girl named Bernadette Soubirous, is also celebrated on February 11. Bernadette was recognized as a saint by the Catholic Church a few years later.
Because numerous pilgrims and tourists to Lourdes, France, claimed to have been healed at the Marian Sanctuary through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin, he chose the commemoration of Our Lady of Lourdes as the day of the observance. The pope also paid homage to the Harissa sanctuary in Lebanon.
The World Day of the Sick had a particular significance in 2005 because the ailing pope died on April 2 of that year. As he lay dying in St. Peter’s Square in Rome, a large crowd assembled to pray for him.
On this day in 2013, Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation, citing his poor health as the cause for his departure. On World Day of the Sick, people all across the world take the opportunity to pray for the sick and those who labor tirelessly to alleviate their pain. Faith-based organizations commemorate this day by providing medicines, food, and spiritual guidance to the sick.

National Guitar Day – February 11, 2022~U.S.
Who comes to mind when you think of the guitar? Hendrix? Segovia? Clapton? No doubt those (mostly) modern titans belong on any list of the greatest six-slingers to ever tune up and jam. And we’ll give them their due. But there’s more to guitar than just the players; there’s a fascinating history of an instrument that’s as versatile as any in music — not just in its various forms and amplifications, but in its seamless integration into the canons of song composers the world over. It’s such a good story, and National Today is here to tell the colorful tale on February 11.
