joybelle Tim Tam Day – February 16, 2022~Australia
Tim Tam Day falls on February 16 each year. It is well known to all that Tim Tam biscuits are a national treasure for Australians. It is then no surprise that they have taken out one day from the national calendar to celebrate their love for this delicious confection and enjoy eating Tim Tam biscuits in different ways. It is the perfect day to learn how one can enjoy eating Tim Tams in new and creative ways.
HISTORY OF TIM TAM DAY Tim Tam is a popular Australian biscuit brand introduced by Arnott’s in 1964. A Tim Tam is a cream-filled sandwich biscuit that was developed by Ian Norris, who worked at Arnott’s. During his trip to Britain, he tasted the popular Penguin biscuits and planned to develop a similar sandwich biscuit for his company. The biscuits were launched in 1964 and were named after a derby horse, Tim Tam.
In 2003, Arnott’s filed a lawsuit against Dick Smith Foods for creating a similar brand of biscuit in terms of design and packaging. Both companies resolved the case without going to court. Arnott’s began manufacturing Tim Tam biscuits for the U.S. market in 2008. In 2017, a special mint and chocolate-flavored Tim Tam biscuit was developed keeping in mind the taste of the American consumers.
The first Arnott’s bakery was set up in 1865, in Newcastle. The majority of Arnott’s confectionery items are distributed within Australia. Several bakeries are set up in Sydney, and Brisbane. On average, around 3,000 Tim Tam biscuits are produced per minute using 20 tonnes of cream filling.
In the early 2000s, Arnott’s launched a series of Tim Tam flavors such as double chocolate, dark mint chocolate, white chocolate, sweet caramel, and honeycomb. Two special flavors of Tim Tam biscuits were also created for the Indonesian market. A limited-edition cheese flavor was later introduced for the same market.

My Way Day – February 17, 2022~U.S.
My Way Day, celebrated every February 17, is a fun celebration urging us to live life authentically, unapologetically, and to play by our own rules without fear, and why not? It’s your life and hey, you’ve got just one to live. Call the shots! Although the national holiday’s history isn’t documented, My Way Day is said to be a brainchild of actor Thomas Roy and his writer Ruth, who both run Wellcat Herbs and Wellcat Holidays. Can you believe the pair have created more than 70 copyrighted special holidays celebrated in America? Super impressive right? Dive in!
HISTORY OF MY WAY DAY My Way Day proudly takes its place amongst at least 79 other special days created by American film, television, and voice actor Thomas Roy and wife Ruth in “Chase’s Calendar of Events” (the country’s go-to calendar for special events). Hollywood actor Thomas Roy is known for films such as “12 Monkeys” (1995), “The Answer Man” (2008), and “Night Catches Us” (2010).
The annual publication, which was launched in 1957 by brothers William D. Chase and Harrison V. Chase, includes special events, holidays, federal and state observances, anniversaries, and much more. After tirelessly gathering information on events, the first edition of “Chase Calendar of Events” was born — 2,000 copies of the 32-page document were published in 1958. It was sold for just $1. In 1983 Contemporary Books, Chicago, Illinois, came into the picture and took over publication 1983.
Four years later, the Chases retired from single-handedly doing the compilation, handing it over to an in-house staff of editors and researchers. From there, the publishing changed when in 1993, Contemporary Books was acquired by Tribune — it was sold to McGraw-Hill Companies in September 2000. From McGraw-Hill to Rowman, the Littlefield Publishing Group, and now the highly renowned Bernan Press.
The “Chase’s Calendar of Events” plays host to many hilarious lighthearted fun holidays such as National Have a Bad Day Day (November 19), where you pick just that day to do the twist wishing someone ‘Have A Bad Day’ instead of the overused traditional ‘Have A Good Day’; and Satisfied Staying Single Day ( February 11), an annual empowering celebration dedicated to celebrating the glories of being contently badass all by yourself without the baggage of a relationship or a significant other among others.

National Cabbage Day – February 17, 2022~U.S.
National Cabbage Day is celebrated on February 17 and we are here to give this humble vegetable a makeover. The use of cabbage dates back to 4000 B.C., with origins in Asia, specifically North China, and the Eastern Mediterranean region of Europe. Did you know that brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, bok choy, kohlrabi, and kale are considered part of the cabbage ? Cabbage is a staple in European and Indian cuisine. The versatile cabbage brings a variety of flavors to the dinner table and can be prepared in many different ways such as pickled, sautéed, stewed, etc.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL CABBAGE DAY Cabbage is more than just a side of coleslaw or an accompaniment to corned beef on St. Patrick’s Day. This delightful veggie deserves additional credit because it has much more to offer. Apart from being a very good source of fiber and vitamins, cabbage is a vegetable that offers value for money.
Although there isn’t much history on National Cabbage Day, apart from the day it was officiated, the history of the domestication of cabbage can be traced back to 4000 B.C. By the Middle Ages, it had become an integral part of European cuisine. During the 17th and 18th centuries, cabbage was a staple in many countries including Germany, England, Ireland, and Russia, where pickled cabbage was frequently consumed.
The cabbage made its debut in North America in 1541 with French explorer Jacques Cartier. By the 18th century, it was commonly planted by both colonists and Native Americans. Today, the world production of cabbage and other species of the same nears 69 million tons, with China accounting for 48% of the total. Although cabbage is a vegetable that is taken for granted, its production numbers affirm its popularity across the world and its nutritional value makes them an essential part of every kitchen.
Cabbage has been around for thousands of years coming in different varieties and flavors. Also, you can enjoy it in a range of ways. You can either eat it raw, steam it, boil it, bake it, braise, or fry it. You can even ferment it to enjoy it in the future.

National Cafe au Lait Day – February 17, 2022~U.S.
National Café au Lait Day is an annual fun celebration that takes place on February 17. The perfect holiday for coffee lovers around the world, French delight ‘Café au Lait’ translated ‘coffee with milk’, is a sweet delicious beverage made from freshly brewed coffee as a base then crowned with steamy hot delicious milk – lots of it! Although of similar variance with the Italian ‘caffè latte’(coffee, espresso, and steamed milk), Spanish ‘café con Leche’ (espresso and scalded milk), Portuguese ‘café com Leite’ (coffee with hot milk) among several variants, they slightly differ in terms of ratios, and method of serving. #Yum.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL CAFE AU LAIT DAY Coffee, a drink made from the seeds of the coffee plant (coffee beans) is said to have been discovered in Ethiopia, Kaffa province, a century ago when it was consumed as food before spreading to other parts of the world. However, it was when coffee arrived in Yemen that it became popular as a drink. From then the love for coffee began spreading throughout the Middle East to Europe by the 17th century and then to the rest of the world. Its preparation involves drying, roasting, and crushing the coffee beans.
The deliciousness of milk, according to popular belief, was first discovered way back in 8000 B.C. in Europe when milk from cows was used to make dairy products. European farmers are credited with milk’s origin. Recent findings from scientists however show dairy drinking began at least 6,000 years ago in Kenya and Sudan.
‘Cafe au Lait’ (meaning ‘coffee with hot milk’) originated in France back in the 1600s when the French introduced the mixing of milk with coffee. Although regularly confused with the Italian ‘caffè latte’, the difference is that while the latter is made with espresso, steamed milk, and some foam and can be served either hot or cold, ‘Cafe au Lait’ is made from freshly brewed coffee and steamed milk and must be served hot. Although the origin of Cafe au Lait Day is unknown, one cannot deny this beverage has delighted tons of taste buds! ‘Cafe au Lait’ is made with equal portions of coffee and milk and is usually light brown.

Random Act of Kindness Day – February 17, 2022~U.S.
If you’re anything like most people, then you are constantly mumbling things to yourself like, “People these days are just rude. What happened to the good days when everyone was polite?” Sound familiar? Of course it does. For those of you that wish you could change the world, National Random Act of Kindness Day, on February 17, is just for you. Here are a few tips on how to get the job done.
HISTORY OF RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS DAY One can never go wrong with kindness, and there can never be too much of it. The idea behind Random Act of Kindness Day is to cultivate feelings of kindness and brighten up someone’s day. Every small act of kindness is significant. It may seem like it doesn’t accomplish much but, just like the domino effect, one act of kindness can lead to more positive outcomes. Don’t hold back from uplifting others with compliments and compassion on this day.
Random Acts of Kindness Day was initiated in 1995 in Denver, Colorado by a nonprofit organization called The Random Acts Of Kindness Foundation. The event spread to New Zealand nine years later, in 2004, and the observance of the holiday became more and more widespread.
Random Acts of Kindness Day may not have been around for a very long time, but kindness has existed throughout human history. There are great examples of prominent figures in history who have made an impact through their selfless acts of kindness — Princess Diana, the Dalai Lama, and Mother Teresa, to name a few. Various studies have also proved that kindness is undoubtedly an inherent part of nature, with feelings of care developing in humans while they’re still babies.

World Human Spirit Day – February 17, 2022~International
World Human Spirit Day is observed annually on February 17 as a day to encourage mindfulness through meditation; to get us to form the habit of constant reflection as a way to feel content in our pressure-filled society. According to Daniel Helminiak, it’s “a respected philosopher in the space of spirituality, the spirit is the mental function of awareness, insight, understanding, judgment, and other reasoning.” In Christianity, it is emphasized that the human spirit is the real person; the essential part of our existence.
World Human Spirit Day aims to help strengthen the connection to our spiritual self as a way to stay grounded even amid societal pressure.
HISTORY OF WORLD HUMAN SPIRIT DAY World Human Spirit Day was started in 2003 by Michael Levy to serve as the day to promote a human spirit that lives a creative, peaceful, and loving life. The holiday is based on the belief that the human spirit represents a place of peace and tranquility that’s needed as an escape from our pressure-filled society. It aims to encourage mindfulness through meditation to get us to form the habit of constant reflection as a way to feel content in our society.
Throughout the modern era, the question of what the human spirit truly is and how it helps us escape our sometimes unfavorable world has been a question philosophers have tried to answer. The holiday is meant to serve as a recognition of the fact that what we know about our world is limited and superficial. It is a day everyone is encouraged to reflect on their achievements in the world as humans and stay content by contemplating the endless possibilities of even greater achievement as spirits.
The day seeks to help strengthen the connection to our spiritual self as a way to stay grounded even amid societal pressure. World Human Spirit Day is a day to search for contentment from within and to embrace the fact that we do not have all the answers. A day to give some higher power thanks for what we have and are yet to have. And, it is typically observed to promote the value of mental peace and satisfaction in our lives.

Pluto Day – February 18, 2022~U.S.
Pluto Day is celebrated annually on February 18 to commemorate the anniversary of the discovery of Pluto in 1930. The planet, known for its characteristic icy mountains and tiny size was discovered by American astronomer Clyde Tombaugh and, up until 2006, was considered one of the nine planets in the solar system together with Mercury, Venus, our current planet of Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Clyde discovered Pluto at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona just 84 years after the discovery of Neptune.
HISTORY OF PLUTO DAY Pluto Day is celebrated annually to commemorate the anniversary of the discovery of Pluto in 1930. Although Pluto was discovered in 1930, the story of its discovery started in 1840 after French astronomer Urbain Le Verrier sensed that there was a planet outside of Uranus due to irregularities in its orbit. His intuition led him to develop mathematical calculations to explain the discrepancies of Uranus’s orbit in relation to the laws of planetary motion and gravity, which led to the eventual discovery of Neptune.
After Neptune was discovered, an event that is widely regarded as a validation of a subset of the astronomy practice called celestial mechanics. It was then realized that there was yet another planet disturbing Uranus’s orbit since the irregularity in its orbit continued. This then led to the search for Pluto — initially called Planet X — being headed by Percival Lowell, whose death would later see the search for Pluto passed to Clyde Tombaugh, who eventually discovered it.
The planet, which was named after the Roman god of the Underworld, was considered one of the nine planets in the solar system up until 2006. The International Astronomical Union reduced its status and tagged it a ‘dwarf’ planet due to not meeting the criteria to be considered a full-sized planet and being two-third of the size of the earth. It is believed that the first two letters in ‘Pluto’ were in honor of Percival Lowell whose belief that there were other planets beyond Neptune, helped fuel the drive that led to its discovery.

Thumb Appreciation Day – February 18, 2022~U.S.
Thumb Appreciation Day is celebrated on February 18! The holiday occurs annually on February 18 to celebrate a part of our body we oftentimes don’t think much about and even take for granted — our thumb. It is meant to be the day we show a little appreciation for it considering the thumb is known to be one of the most important digits. Without our thumb, many things that are required for our daily survival like zipping the cloth that protects us from gusts and snows would be nearly impossible to do.
HISTORY OF THUMB APPRECIATION DAY Thumb Appreciation Day is observed annually on February 18 to appreciate the worth of our thumb. A body part so useful that it would have been near impossible to grasp things more easily, pick small objects up, eat with one hand, and do so many other things without it.
The holiday is meant to be the day to notice our thumb and give it the love and attention it deserves for being so vital to the functioning of our hands and life. It is meant to encourage everyone to spread love and show appreciation for their thumbs that medical professionals agree is one of the parts of our body that distinguishes us from other animals.
Our thumbs are the reason we can operate heavy tools that help us exploit the resources on earth. In further affirmation of how important the thumb is, medical professionals all agree that if we were to lose one of all our fingers, the index finger is the best one we lose.
Made up of two bones, human thumbs are often called ‘opposable thumbs’ because they can be stretched opposite other fingers in order to help grip things easily. And, they are known to have a coordinated set of motions like translating, rotating, and flexing that all help in everyday needs like penning an essay, turning a nut, picking up a coin, or buttoning a shirt.

National Battery Day – February 18, 2022 ~ U.S.
National Battery Day is celebrated on February 18. Imagine what our lives would be like without batteries? We will have to stay glued to the electric sockets to enjoy technology. Thankfully, we have batteries that keep us connected without a direct power source. We can watch T.V., use our phones and other mobile devices, and light up the bulbs without relying on a power source. Do you know batteries are what make our phones mobile? Without them, we wouldn’t be able to use our phones without electricity. You wouldn’t be reading this without batteries.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL BATTERY DAY Imagine working on a huge project on a desktop with a battery. Now, what if there is a brief power outage? Yes, it is dangerous, if you do not have alternative power for seamless flow.
Batteries have been in use since the 19th century. It was first created when Italian Scientist Alessandro Volta layered silver, separated by paper and dipped in salt or acid and zinc to form the ‘voltaic piles’ in 1800. These piles generated electric current. This paved a way for evolution as in 1802, William Cruickshank designed a battery for mass production.
Corrosion remained a critical impediment until the Daniell cell came along. It was invented by John Daniell, a chemist who received accolades for this invention which reduced corrosion when storing batteries. Afterward, Columbia, the first commercially available battery, was introduced by the National Carbon company in 1896, birthing the 4D battery created for flashlights two years later. Batteries were later introduced to watches and clocks, and are now used for diverse purposes. Batteries are used in almost anything driven by electricity. It is found in automobiles, mobile phones, desktops, televisions, radios, calculators, machinery, solar panels, power banks, remote controls, and down to your alarm clock.
Here are some tips for using batteries. Ensure you read instructions on batteries before use. For efficient batteries, keep them at room temperature or lower. This reduces the rate of chemical activity within the batteries.
Do not store old and new batteries together. Do not store your batteries in a metal container, and remember to keep them from humidity.
Do not puncture or damage batteries. Recycle lithium and button batteries; alkaline, manganese, and carbon-zinc batteries can be disposed of with the trash.

National Drink Wine Day – February 18, 2022~U.S.
National Drink Wine Day is held each year on February 18, so get ready to unwind with a glass or two of your favorite Cabernet Sauvignon or Chardonnay. Wine has been a staple in human culture since its invention in 7000 BC. Some ancient societies enjoyed their wine so much, they even worshipped it! These days, hundreds of types of wine are produced all over the world, so there’s an endless variety to choose from.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL DRINK WINE DAY While we know humans have been making wine for thousands of years, no one is certain who was the first to ferment grapes into the beverage we now call wine. Evidence of ancient wine production has been found in China, the Middle East, and Greece, so it appears many different cultures discovered the process at nearly the same time. The oldest known winery was found in a cave in Armenia, and is over 4,000 years old — The vinters there were using a grape still used to make wine today! Barrels of wine have been found in the tombs of Egyptian Pharaohs, and the Ancient Greeks used wine in secret religious ceremonies. Although wine has taken all sorts of different forms throughout the ages, the process has changed very little in the thousands of years since its invention. Grapes are crushed, pressed, and fermented, and the mixture is sealed into barrels. The mixture is aged, and then bottled. Using these simple steps, an infinite variety of wines can be created, and different regions of the world are known for the distinctive vintages they produce. Things like soil, temperature, and weather all affect the way wine grapes grow, and make each batch unique. Two bottles of the same wine from the same vineyard might taste totally different depending on the year they were produced, and some vintages become highly sought after as a result. Use this National Drink Wine Day to try a new bottle, and relax with the knowledge that you’re celebrating a long, long human tradition.

National Caregivers Day – February 18, 2022~U.S.
National Caregivers Day is observed on the third Friday in February — on February 18 this year. The day honors individuals who selflessly provide personal care, and physical- and emotional support to those who need it most. There are different types of caregivers who are not just limited to the health sector. The types are: caregiver, professional caregiver, independent caregiver, private duty caregiver, and informal caregiver. Some of them are not always paid, which is why it is essential to appreciate and thank them for their long-term commitment.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL CAREGIVERS DAY Caregivers really go the mile in providing the essentials and necessities, from medical aid to personal grooming. Despite this, they are under-appreciated and often underpaid, or not paid at all. For this reason, the Providers Association for Home Health & Hospice Agencies, PAHHHA, established the third Friday in February as National Caregivers Day in 2015. They aimed to dedicate a day annually to recognize and appreciate caregivers everywhere. PAHHHA also provides resources that enable others to extend gratitude to the caregivers in their lives. The first celebration of the holiday took place in 2016.
According to a report by the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, caregivers spend six days in a month grooming, feeding, dressing, bathing, and walking, 13 days a month commuting, cleaning, doing the laundry, monitoring medication, shopping, and cooking special meals for their patient. Furthermore, 13 hours a month are spent coordinating visits with physicians, researching symptoms and diseases, and managing finances.
The National Alliance for Caregiving and American Association of Retired Persons reports that, in 2020, an estimated 53 million caregivers in the U.S. cared for an adult or child without getting paid for it. While most caregivers tend to one adult, approximately 15% look after two adults, and 3% care for three or more adults. The Institute on Aging reports that over ¾ of caregivers are female who spend 50% more time providing essential services than males.
But who will care for the caregivers? What’s surprising is that many caregivers are elders themselves, and the number of hours they spend caregiving only increases with time. The average age of caregivers looking after a person 65 years or older is 63 years old! Many of them report having poor health themselves.
We think the special kindness and patience of caregivers should be celebrated year-round. Their importance is especially honored on National Caregivers Day when we should be there for them just as they are there for our loved ones.

National Vet Girls ROCK Day – February 19, 2022~U.S.
National Vet Girls ROCK Day is celebrated on February 19. It was established by the Vet Rock Girls, an initiative for female veterans, to recognize the dedication of over two million female veterans. The day is dedicated to building relationships, helping and supporting one another, and creating a voice where the needs of veteran women can be heard. Raise your glasses as we cheer to women who exhibit astounding bravery by enlisting in the military and fighting for peace.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL VET GIRLS ROCK DAY National Vet ROCK Day was established in 2017, celebrating the history and lives of women in the military. Long before women were allowed to serve in the military, they participated in wars as nurses, cooks, and caretakers for the soldiers.
In 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt established the Navy Nurse Corps; the first 20 female participants were called ‘The Sacred Twenty.’
The first woman to be officially enlisted was Loretta Perfectus Walsh in 1917, when she joined the American Navy. Women were officially allowed to participate in active military and combat roles in the last two years of World War Il. 33,000 women signed up to serve in different roles. Hundreds of them were a part of the Women Airforce Service Program, testing military aircraft.
They have also made a remarkable distinction in the history of the U.S military. After the Civil War, Dr. Mary E. Walker was honored with a medal for her work as a surgeon during the war.
In 1998, Commander Maureen Farren became the first woman to command a combatant ship, the USS Mount Vernon. In 2016, Captain Kristen Griest became the first female Army Infantry commander, after graduating from Ranger school.
Female veterans also struggle with mental, physical, and financial problems, and find it difficult to integrate into civilian life after experiencing war. Many women suffer from MST (Military Sexual Trauma), cardiovascular risk factors, depression, eye and skin disorders, and spine conditions.
This calls for support and care from every person. Support groups for female vets have been created and National Vet Girls ROCK Day was established to create more awareness and give them more support. It is celebrated in meet-up groups in different spots around the country; you can join one to celebrate.

Tug of War Day – February 19, 2022~U.S.
If your only introduction to the game of tug of war was at summer camp or in elementary school, you are in desperate need to celebrate Tug of War Day on February 19. Tug of war has grown up from the days of your youth. In addition to having its own holiday, tug of war has national and international federations that sponsor worldwide tournaments. And there are rules … lots of them. Fortunately, the international federation’s tug of war rules don’t have to apply to you if you’ve decided to relive your youth and find a tug of war game nearby. Tug of war is one of the simplest games to play. All you need is a long rope and anywhere from a few people to dozens of people. Heck, you can even play one-on-one tug of war with a short rope and your dog. (Just be prepared to lose; dogs are naturals at this game.) To play tug of war, place the rope in the middle of a field. Tie a cloth in the middle. Set up marker lines 10-20 feet from the center. Then split into teams and try to pull the cloth on the rope (and the other team by default) across your marker line. Simple enough. It’s great for building muscles and for fun. And be thankful that you don’t play tug of war the way ancient Vikings did, where they tugged on animal pelts stretched over a fire pit. The game’s losers received a hotfoot … or worse if they were unlucky.

Shivaji Jayanti – February 19, 2022~India
Shivaji Jayanti on February 19 celebrates the great emperor of Maratha in India. The holiday is celebrated in the state of Maharashtra to honor the birth and life of the emperor. This holiday is almost 400 years old!
HISTORY OF SHIVAJI JAYANTI Try saying this name three times: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti. This is the name of the great emperor of the Maratha empire in the 17th century. He was born on February 19, 1630, in the Shivneri fort. He was named after the goddess Shivai, who blessed his mother’s prayers for a son.
Shivaji founded the Maratha empire after seizing the forts of Torna, Raigad, and Kondana at the age of 17. His coronation as emperor of Maratha was held in Raigad in 1674 when he was 44 years old. It had 50,000 people in attendance. He promoted the use of Sanskrit and Marathi languages in court during his rule. He was a great warrior and an intelligent leader who handled politics well during his reign. He had four wives and eight children. He later died of fever and dysentery in 1680, at the age of 50.
Shivaji is a figure who represents courage, freedom, and the fight for independence. The holiday was first celebrated by Lokmanya Tilak in Pune in 1895. The freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar made the holiday popular by making Shivaji’s achievements known, making the holiday widely celebrated in India. The holiday is celebrated by gathering at the first captured by Shivaji and commemorating his acts and achievements. We respect his great feats at his young age and great war tactics, which established him as the leader of Maratha.
You can celebrate the holiday by creating awareness online, watching the celebrations online, and doing a good act of bravery.

World Pangolin Day – February 19, 2022~International
World Pangolin Day is observed annually on the third Saturday in February and takes place on February 19 this year. The day aims to celebrate pangolins, raise awareness and recommit international N.G.O.s to the fight against the global capturing of pangolins in Africa and Asia.
An estimated one million of these wonderful animals have been, and continue to be, harvested from the wild in African and Asian countries to meet the high demands for their scale, skin, blood, and even fetuses that are believed to have several different uses both in fashion, traditional medicine, and cooking.
HISTORY OF WORLD PANGOLIN DAY Each year, World Pangolin Day is observed annually to raise awareness and recommit international organizations to the fight against the global harvesting of pangolins. The only truly scaly mammals in the world.
The day is an opportunity for pangolin enthusiasts and the wider human community to join hands in raising awareness about the plight of these unique mammals — pangolin numbers are rapidly declining in Asia and Africa.
Pangolins are a highly prized commodity, often illegally trapped, trafficked, and killed for its scale by organized crime networks on a large scale to serve the need of the traditional medicine market in Asia where pangolin scales are unfortunately believed to be a cure-all of sorts and pangolin flesh is considered a delicacy.
In Vietnam and Central and the southern parts of West Africa, pangolins are often offered at restaurants catering to wealthy clients who consider their meat rare and a statement of status.
When frightened, a pangolin will curl up into a tight ball to protect its tender underside, making it a prime target for illegal poachers.
From 2016 to 2019, an estimated 206.4 tonnes of pangolin scales or an equivalent of about 360,000 pangolins were intercepted and confiscated from 52 seizures according to a report by the Wildlife Justice Commission — an international foundation set up in the Netherlands with the mission to disrupt and help dismantle organized transnational criminal wildlife trading networks.

National Lash Day – February 19, 2022~U.S.
National Lash Day is celebrated annually on February 19 to promote the importance of proper eyelash care. It is a day to notice and appreciate both true and false eyelashes for the beauty they add to our look. Lashes are known to make our eyes pop and stand out from the crowd. They also serve an even more important role in helping to protect our eyes from dirt, germs, and foreign objects and prevent the lubricating moistures in our eyes from evaporating.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL LASH DAY Every February 19 marks National Lash Day. A holiday created by House of Lashes, as a day to “…notice and appreciate both true and false eyelashes for the beauty they add to every look.”
The origin of cosmetics for beautifying eyelashes dates back to 4,000 B.C. when kohl became popular for darkening the eyelids in Ancient Egypt. Modern non-toxic mascara is said to have originated in France in 1913 before it started to take hold in the U.S. years later, with the debut of Maybelline’s mascara whose formula was made of a mix of Vaseline and coal and was developed by its founder, Thomas Williams.
On National Lash Days, everyone is encouraged to take special care of their often negligible eyelashes and flaunt their beauty with a beautiful and luscious pair of lashes.
One interesting fact about our lashes is that they are made up of 97% keratin — the key structural protein found in nails, feathers, horns, and claws. It is also believed that eyelashes grow to an average of over three inches in length, with those closest to the center usually longer than those on the sides of the eyelid. And, that eyelashes on the upper eyelid typically grow fuller than the ones at the bottom; usually, the top would have between 200 to 300, while the bottom, about 100.
It was also recently discovered that our eyelashes typically start growing before birth as an embryo between the 22 and 26 weeks of pregnancy.

Iwo Jima Day – February 19, 2022~U.S.
Iwo Jima Day on February 19 takes place every year to mark the anniversary of a battle that lasted around five weeks. The fight between the U.S Army and the Japanese soldiers took place amidst World War II and turned out to be quite horrific. Thousands of people on both sides lost their lives. However, in the end, the U.S Army emerged victorious even when faced with impossible challenges. Hence, the day is officially observed in Massachusetts and unofficially marked across the United States. On this day, pay a tribute to our lost soldiers, celebrate their victory, and rejoice at how the country has emerged as a united nation.
HISTORY OF IWO JIMA DAY Before Iwo Jima became known as a famous battle where many soldiers lost their lives, it was merely known as one of the Japanese Volcano Islands. However, it’s on this island that the Battle of Iwo Jima took place between the U.S. Marines and the Imperial Army of Japan. The battle took place because the island had three airfields that could provide the U.S. Army with a strategic spot for other battles. On February 19, 1945, the American forces invaded the island and continued to fight the strong Japanese Army for five weeks.
During the battle, almost 7,000 U.S. Marines lost their lives. While the U.S. Army was sure they would win, it took many days to defeat the Japanese because their army had adopted a new defense tactic. They utilized the mountainous landscape and jungles to set up camouflaged artillery positions, in effect, creating hundreds of hurdles for the U.S. Army. To top it off, the beach of the island consisted of steep dunes of soft volcanic ash. Due to the sand, making a passageway for the battlefield vehicles became quite difficult.
Even with this slight hurdle that affected the timeline, the Americans were calm because they had already launched a pre-attack on the Japanese. Most importantly, when the Americans landed, they faced no rebuttal from the Japanese. This made them believe that the enemy forces had already accepted defeat. Little did they know, the lack of immediate response was simply part of General Kuribayashi’s plan. The battle of Iwo Jima is now known as one of the bloodiest events of World War II.

Constantin Brancusi Day – February 19, 2022~Romania
Constantin Brancusi Day is an annual holiday held every February 19 to celebrate the life of the artist Constantin Brancusi widely regarded as one of the most influential sculptors of the 20th century and a pioneer of modernism. Born on February 19, 1876, Romanians observe Constantin Brancusi Day in honor of their famous compatriot.
Brancusi, who was also a photographer, drew inspiration for his artworks from mystical folklore and traditional sources. Although his works were often regarded by others as abstract, the artist claimed his creations were expressive representations of his subjects. He produced carvings from wood, metal, marble, stone, and bronze. Later, Brancusi moved to Paris and joined a community of artists.
HISTORY OF CONSTANTIN BRANCUSI DAY Every year Romanians observe Constantin Brancusi’s life after the Romanian parliament initiated Constantin Brancusi Day in 2015.
Brancusi, often called the patriarch of modern sculpture, was born in a village in Romania where he took an interest and quickly gained expertise in the carving of wooden structures that were the typical job of most villagers. Brancusi would spend time carving farm tools and other items from wood and taking care of the sheep. His childhood was unhappy as his father and brothers bullied him to the point when he was forced to run away from home to avoid repeated beatings.
Around the age of nine, Brancusi finally left home permanently and moved to Craiova, where he lived and worked until the age of 18. Here, his talents were discovered and he was sent to the Craiova School of Arts and Crafts. Following that, he attended art schools in Bucharest and Munich before moving to France to begin developing the revolutionary style for which he is now well known.
An interesting precedent to Romania’s Parliament declaring the sculptor’s birthday a holiday was when it set up a national fundraiser to raise enough money to buy back one of Brancusi’s works named “Wisdom Of Earth,” to posthumously mark his 140th birthday.
Constantin Brancusi Day was designed to honor the sculptor’s legacy and his contribution to the development of modern art and is usually marked by several events across Romania. These include a state-sponsored event at the Tinerimea Romana or National Art Center, in the country.

National Chocolate Mint Day – February 19, 2022~U.S.
National Chocolate Mint Day celebrates the unusual yet delicious flavor which has become a classic over time. The combination seems to make for a healthy alternative. Chocolate helps produce serotonin and dopamine, and the combination of that with mint overall makes for a healthier candy. Mint is also a powerful herb which aids digestion and fabulously freshens breath. This triumphant flavor combination means an entire day dedicated to its taste and vigor. Announced by the United States National Confectioners Association, National Chocolate Mint Day honors the flavor pairing and reflects the mishmash of these two flavors and their popularity.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL CHOCOLATE MINT DAY Chocolate only used to be consumed as a beverage. The Aztecs and Mayans brought it back to Europe, but it wasn’t as popular as it is today due to its bitterness and medical purposes. Historically, mint also initially started out as a hot beverage. In Europe, mint was mixed with cinnamon and spices to make it more palatable. Over time, sugar, chocolate and mint drinks became popular and fashionable. By the 1800’s, chocolate was already being mass produced but mixing it with mint did not happen for a while yet.
The Romans and Ancient Greeks genuinely used and valued mint due to its health benefits. It aids digestion, freshens the breath and a regular component in many recipes. Combining mint with chocolate happened around the 19th century when chocolate alone was being manufactured as confectionary and for ice cream.
In the 1940’s, the creation of the York Peppermint Patty was announced, and this popular development made these two flavors combined, an absolute hit. The York Cone Company is now owned by Hershey which today speaks for itself. Since then, the combination of chocolate and mint is one to be reckoned with.
Mass production meant chocolate was eventually combined with mint to make a dazzling final result. One of the earliest mass producers of chocolate mints was a place in New York called Huylers who had a chain of stores across the U.S. Girl scouts popularized the snack in the 50’s and they are still famous today. Now, chocolate and mint can be found everywhere from ice cream to cookies and candy.

National Love Your Pet Day – February 20, 2022~U.S.
On February 20, we celebrate National Love Your Pet Day, a day to embrace one special trait that makes us human: our love of our pets! There are many things that differentiate humans from the rest of the animal kingdom, but one of the more unusual behaviors is our longstanding tendency to keep other animals as pets. Gallup reports that sixty percent of Americans are current pet owners. It only makes sense to commemorate something that’s so important to so many people, so on February 20, we celebrate our pets with National Love Your Pet Day!
WHEN IS NATIONAL LOVE YOUR PET DAY 2022? National Love Your Pet Day is celebrated on February 20. Whether cats, dogs, birds, or even tigers, our furry friends are showered with love and affection on this day!
HISTORY OF NATIONAL LOVE YOUR PET DAY Pets have been a part of human life for thousands of years. Ever since we’ve made our first steps into civilization, animals have been right there alongside us. And look at those faces! Who could blame us?
Nobody really knows exactly what animal the very first pet was. But, one animal, the wolf, lived alongside early humans for centuries. Even as far back as 12,000 years ago, dogs and cats were buried in their human counterparts’ graves. It seems that even early humans had a deep attachment to their furry friends.
Meanwhile, European royalty began keeping toy dog breeds in the 1600s. And in modern day Spain, pet bird markets were popular among all classes in southern cities such as Seville well into the 1960s.
Most recently, groups such as the American Kennel Club have only increased our love for our pets. With events such as the annual Westminster Dog Show, humankind has only grown its affection for our non-human friends. Pets are ingrained into our own species, and National Love Your Pet Day gives us a reason to celebrate them!
