World Spay Day – February 22, 2022~U.S.
You know what we love? Removing the reproductive organs of animals for their own good. Which is why we love World Spay Day on February 22! It might sound harsh, but the truth is, failing to spay and neuter dogs and cats is responsible for millions of unwanted animals living on the streets without homes or food or being killed in shelters all over the world. So while it might make you twinge to think of a day celebrating animal sterilization, the truth is, the pain of putting all those animals down is far harsher.

Single Tasking Day – February 22, 2022~U.S.
Single Tasking Day is celebrated on February 22 and is a special day that pays tribute to one of the long-lost habits in this busy world — single-tasking! Did you know that single-tasking can make you more productive while conserving energy? Yes, while people are lauding multitasking and getting as many things as possible done in a day, resulting in half-finished jobs, single-tasking is much more productive.
HISTORY OF SINGLE TASKING DAY Single-tasking or monotasking is the art of dedicating oneself to one given task at a time and minimizing potential interruptions and distractions until said task is completed or a significant period of time has elapsed. This differs from multitasking, which is the ability to perform more than one task at a time, dividing one’s focus among multiple tasks.
To commemorate this amazing skill that most people have forgotten, people across the world celebrate Single Tasking Day. Unfortunately, the history behind the origin and celebration of Single Tasking Day is not known. There was a long period of time where people boasted about their multitasking skills and abilities, but as the dangers of multitasking have slowly come to light in the past years, people are trying to move away from multitasking and adopting single-tasking.
Multitasking has been repeatedly shown to leave us more exhausted and unproductive, whereas single-tasking achieves exactly the opposite of that. Single-tasking is not just taking a task and doing it without any distractions and going about our day; it means taking a task, breaking it down into parts, and completing each of those parts thoroughly with undivided attention to detail.
So, don’t let the earthly pressures of multitasking overwhelm you and make you lose track of details and stop you from doing your best; instead, take a deep breath, take one step at a time and make the best of your ability!

World Thinking Day – February 22, 2022~World
World Thinking Day, celebrated on February 22, is a day of friendship, sisterhood, and empowerment where Girl Scouts and Girl Guides across the world speak out on issues that affect girls and young women. Did you know that this event raises funds for 10 million Girl Guides and Girl Scouts across the world? The theme for 2022 World Thinking Day is ‘Our World, Our Equal Future: The Environment and Gender Equality.’
HISTORY OF WORLD THINKING DAY The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A., and other WAGGGS member organizations have been celebrating World Thinking Day since 1926. This is a day to celebrate being part of the diverse global sisterhood. The history of World Thinking Day is a fascinating story.
In 1926, delegates from across the world met at Camp Edith Macy — now named the Edith Macy Conference Center — in New York for the 4th World Conference and decided to create a day for guides and girl scouts. They selected the joint birthday of Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of the scout and guide movement, and his wife Olave as the Thinking Day.
Later in 1932, a Belgian delegate suggested that girls could raise funds, World thinking Day Fund for the organization, and show their thanks. Accepting this suggestion Lord Baden-Powell wrote a letter to all guides and girl scouts worldwide asking them to donate a penny since a penny was enough for a loaf of bread in those days.
In 1999, during the Dubai Conference, the name of the Thinking Day was changed to ‘World Thinking Day.’ Today, this has grown into a huge global event that encourages members of the movement to think about bigger issues.
The theme for the 2022 World thinking Day is ‘Our World, Our Equal Future: The Environment and Gender Equality.’ On account of the ongoing pandemic, WAGGGS is offering a free World Thinking Day live session hosted by WAGGGS world centers that enables girl guides and girl scouts all over the world to connect with each other.

National Hospitality Workers Appreciation Day – February 23, 2022~United States
Created by Food Service Direct — an online store for chefs and restaurant operators — National Hospitality Workers Appreciation Day on February 23 appreciates the hard workers of the service industry who strive tirelessly to bring the best in comfort and luxury. The hospitality industry is often confused with the hotel industry, which is not the case. The latter is a branch of the former. The hospitality industry is broad and includes hotels, restaurants, bars, theme parks, tourism, and more. The presentation, creativity, entertainment, and quality of these businesses are all thanks to their hospitality workers, which is why we are celebrating them today!
HISTORY OF NATIONAL HOSPITALITY WORKERS APPRECIATION DAY The term hospitality originated from the French word ‘hospice’ meaning “taking care of travelers.” Travelers were often invited to rest at the homes of locals during their travels. They would sleep on floors, as no proper resting facilities existed until monasteries decided to create them. This is how lodging services came into existence. Inns started operating in the late 1700s, providing shelter and food for travelers. Horses and carriages were also taken care of. This is when the hospitality sector started to shape. Soon, the element of luxury and modern facilities started to emerge. This led to the creation of hotels, with elegant rooms and finer dining spaces. The year 1829 was significant for the American hospitality industry. This is the year when the first luxury hotel was constructed in Boston, Massachusetts by American architect Isaiah Rogers — the Tremont Hotel.
In modern times, the success of bars, restaurants, hotels, inns, is heavily reliant on hospitality workers. Indeed, the service provided by hospitality workers can make or break the experience and is a crucial factor for determining the quality and standard of the business. As the backbone of the hospitality industry, it is unfortunate that hospitality workers don’t get the full appreciation that they truly deserve, and are often overworked and underpaid.
Stress, psychological exhaustion, and burnout are frequently faced by hospitality workers due to the demanding nature of the hospitality sector. Mostly serving at the front line directly with customers, hospitality workers meet the required needs, communicate and work behind the scenes, and maintain efficiency and quality. Their diligence and attitude topped with a smile creates a satisfactory experience
On National Hospitality Workers Appreciation Day we express our gratitude to the talented and dedicated hospitality workers, and unions, trade associations, and other organizations collaborate to make the industry better for its labor.

Play Tennis Day – February 23, 2022~U.S.
Play Tennis Day is celebrated on February 23 across the country every year. This is a day dedicated to playing tennis, a racket sport that’s one of the most popular sports to play and watch in the world. Tennis is a sport that can be played by anyone, regardless of where they are from and what their status is. It can be played against single opponents or between teams of two players. If you can hold a racket, then you can play tennis. It is derived from what is called ‘real tennis’, a game that was called the ‘Sport of Kings.’ Real tennis is also known as court tennis or royal tennis.
HISTORY OF PLAY TENNIS DAY Tennis is a great game to play as a sport or as a fun sport between and friends. The original game was very similar to modern-day lawn tennis, but the rules and scoring system were much more complex. This game in turn evolved from an older ball game that used to be played in France. Modern-day tennis originated in England and was known as lawn tennis to differentiate it from ‘real tennis’. A young American socialite called Mary Ewing Outerbridge introduced the game to America, and the game caught on. Tennis has remained popular in the U.S. since it was introduced, and the country has produced many Grand Slam winners.
Eventually, the International Tennis Federation was founded, which set up three tournaments as the major championships for the game.
The appeal of the game lies in its simplicity. Anyone can play it because you don’t need anything beyond a racket and balls to play. The game is played on tennis courts but can just as easily be played outside, as long as there is enough space. Formal tennis courts are perfectly flat and rectangular. But the material of the surfaces varies. Tennis can be played on grass, clay, and hard courts which are made of concrete or asphalt. There may also be courts with artificial turfs. The rules of the game are straightforward in that a player who sends the ball across to the other is the one serving. Players win points if the other player cannot strike the ball and return it across the court.

Pink Shirt Day in Canada – February 23, 2022~Canada
Pink Shirt Day is celebrated on the last Wednesday of February each year. People wear pink shirts to signify the stand against bullying. This day started in Canada and is now observed on various dates around the world. In 2012, the United Nations declared the official day to be May 4, but some countries prefer to celebrate it on February 28 or 29, and this date is accepted by many countries worldwide, countries like the United States, France, Australia, New Zealand, Lebanon, and the United Kingdom.
HISTORY OF PINK SHIRT DAY IN CANADA The first Pink Shirt Day was established by Travis Price and David Shepherd of Berwick, Nova Scotia. In 2007, they bought and shared 50 pink shirts after Chuck McNeill — a male ninth-grader got bullied for wearing a pink shirt on the first day of school. The former Premier of Nova Scotia, Rodney MacDonald, then declared the second Thursday of September ‘Stand Up Against Bullying Day’ in commemoration of these events. The Premier of British Columbia in 2008, Gordon Campbell, finally announced February 27 to be the regional anti-bullying day, and that set the last Wednesday of every February as the national anti-bullying day in Canada. In 2009, Boys and Girls Clubs wore pink T-shirts that said ‘Pink Shirt Day’ and ‘Bullying Stops Here’ for Anti-Bullying Day.
The day was established to combat bullying. The United States Department of Justice indicated that one out of four kids would be bullied during adolescence. And bullying usually continues after the first event, sometimes for years after. Detailed research showed that 71% of students bullied continue to be bullied, making it an issue with no solution. Bullying is so bad that even a 2010 study in the Yale School of Medicine discovered an association between being bullied and committing suicide. The term to describe this is ‘bullycide,’ where someone who is bullied eventually commits suicide as the effect.
Pink Shirt Day activities can take place at schools, workplaces, neighborhoods, or any peer group location. It usually involves abolishing bullying rallies, creating awareness, holding networking booths to help the community better understand the wrongs of bullying, and promoting anti-discrimination organizations. Other features include handouts, resources, and information promoting the message of the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence.

National Tile Day – February 23, 2022~U.S.
National Tile Day is on February 23, and we are supercharged to enjoy the aesthetic pleasure of the superb craftsmanship and creativity of the tile industry. Did you know that tiles have existed for thousands of years? Yes, mostly ceramic, mosaic, and stone tiles, and they have evolved into the many varieties so many of us crave today.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL TILE DAY Tiles are timeless elements of architectural endeavors and design. Seeing them on the walls, floors, and roofs provides aesthetic pleasure, and they have become inseparable from architecture and designs in all spheres, both domestic and public.
More than that, tiles can be used for flooring all through the house. Kitchens, bathroom, toilet, sitting room; every room in the house can have tiles on the floor to provide a strong, durable, and beautiful flooring. There are many types of tiles, from ceramic, porcelain, and glass to marble, granite, and other natural stone tiles, and many others.
The use of tiles in history began in ancient Egypt several millennia back, and they were used for decorative purposes. They were mostly found in murals, mosaics, and various other designs. The Egyptians had already begun using blue brick tiles to decorate their homes around the fourth millennium B.C., and glazed brick tiles were common in Mesopotamia also, as found on the famous Ishtar Gate in Babylon, which was tiled and decorated with lions, bulls, and dragons. The Islamic empires are given credit for the spread of ceramic tiles as wall coverings, and then the Chinese via their access to the silk trade routes.
Today, tiles exist all over the world, gracing the walls and floors of millions of structures. They have evolved to different designs, patterns, and arrangements that are beautiful and pleasing to the sight, and National Tile Day exists as a moment to celebrate this wonderful, awe-inspiring craftsmanship.

The Emperor's Birthday – February 23, 2022~Japan
The Emperor’s Birthday is celebrated in Japan on February 23, and only changes when a new emperor is crowned. We are supercharged to celebrate the historic day with all Japanese flair and style. Japan has the oldest monarchy in the world. There have been 126 emperors since the inception of Japan, all traceable to the first emperor and the founder of what is today Japan.
HISTORY OF THE EMPEROR'S BIRTHDAY Birthdays are the best days! It is a special time of the year to celebrate growth, development, and all the things we all are thankful for in our journey so far. Birthdays remind us of how far we have come as a person or institution, the challenges and hurdles we have crossed to get where we are, and the idea of a new beginning in which new, greater achievements can happen. The history of Japanese emperors and their rule in the country is very rich and robust, and the imperial is arguably the longest-lasting royal in the world, lasting more than 1,500 years. According to tradition, Emperor Jimmu was Japan’s first emperor, and founded the imperial dynasty. Japanese mythology tells us that he was a direct descendant of both Amaterasu, the Sun Goddess, and Susanoo, the Storm God.
Over the long course of Japanese history, a lot of changes have occurred as a result of power struggles that relegated the emperors to purely symbolic and ceremonial positions, but despite that, emperors have always come from the same line as Emperor Jimmu.
Before the end of the Second World War, the Emperor’s Birthday was always called ‘Tenchosetsu,’ meaning; ‘The sky and the earth, the universe is eternal.’ This was a conveyance of hope that the emperor would reign eternally. But after the Second World War, when the imperial relinquished all political power, the name changed to ‘Tenno Tanjobi,’ a more casual term.
The Emperor’s Birthday holiday date in Japan changes with the accession of a new emperor and is held on the day that the reigning emperor was born. The current emperor of Japan, Naruhito, was born on February 23, 1960, making this the date for the holiday.

National Banana Bread Day – February 23, 2022~U.S.
National Banana Bread Day celebrates a perfect pairing of fruit plus bread. Admit it, few things are quite as comforting as walking into the house and smelling a freshly baked loaf of banana bread. It’s certainly a dessert staple in many households, which is probably why so many of us have such a special place in our hearts for this delicious treat. The best things in life deserve an entire day devoted to celebrating their existence.

Inconvenience Yourself Day – February 23, 2022~U.S.
Inconvenience Yourself Day is celebrated on the fourth Wednesday in February and takes place on February 23 this year. It’s a holiday dedicated to putting other people first, and going out of your way to help. Inconveniencing yourself isn’t fun, but practicing self-awareness about how your actions affect people are really important for self-growth. In a world where people are busy and more disconnected from each other, Inconvenience Yourself Day is a fantastic way to shift focus from our own lives to people around us and work to become a little kinder to each other. The day encourages us to look outside ourselves, at the struggles of people around us, and see how we can help.
HISTORY OF INCONVENIENCE YOURSELF DAY Human beings are inherently kind. We are capable of great acts of kindness, and being completely unselfish. All it comes down to is opportunity. When people are given the chance to be kind, they tend to go out of their way to make life a little easier for the people around them. Inconvenience Yourself Day was started by Julie Thompson, who is an environmental consultant living in Florida. She realized the necessity of spending time paying attention to the world around her as she was working. Whether it be the environmental crises or other issues, people of the world are always suffering, and Julie Thompson decided that she wanted to be part of the solution. So she came up with a day when people could go out of their way to help other people.
Being kind is important to human beings on a community level, as well as on an individual level. Acts of kindness and compassion boost our dopamine and serotonin levels — the ‘feel-good’ chemicals in our brains. In a sense, human beings are wired to be compassionate to each other, because we are social animals.
In anthropology, the study of human lives and cultures, proof of the beginning of civilization is not pots or buildings. Instead, it is a healed femur. In ancient history, when a person broke a bone, it would take a lot of care from other people for the person to live long enough for the bone to heal. The fact that they received that care is proof that kindness and inconveniencing ourselves for each other are essential to human society.

National Day Brunei – February 23, 2022~Brunei
National Day in Brunei is celebrated on February 23 every year. Also known as ‘Hari Nasional’ in Malay, the National Day commemorates the day Brunei seceded from Great Britain and became an independent nation. Brunei was a protectorate of the United Kingdom for over two decades before it gained full independence from colonial rule. The day is important to all the citizens of Brunei, who use the day as an opportunity to exhibit their patriotism. There are massive celebrations in the capital of Bandar Seri Begawan and the Sultan of Brunei marches in the celebrations.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL DAY BRUNEI Brunei, a country in Southeast Asia, is located on the island of Borneo, surrounded by the rest of the island, which is divided between Malaysia and Indonesia. Currently, the country is a monarchy, ruled by its Sultan, and applies Sharia as well as the English common law. Ancient history records the state of Brunei as existing as far back as the 7th century, as the Srivijaya Empire. It was an incredibly wealthy nation that used to be predominantly Hindu. Sometime in the 15th century, the rulers converted to Islam, and the religion has remained the dominant religion for the country ever since.
From the 1600s, the Empire of Brunei started to decline, and the British got involved in the 1800s during a succession conflict over the rightful Sultan. In 1888, the Sultan signed an agreement with Britain, which gave Britain control over Brunei’s foreign affairs and introduced British citizens into the country. During World War II, Brunei was briefly occupied by the Japanese but, eventually, the Japanese were defeated by the British who took over Brunei again after the war. But by this time, political parties were formed by the people of Brunei to return to the Sultan’s rule and preserve their culture.
First, a constitution was written declaring Brunei an independent state, where the United Kingdom was still responsible for things like foreign affairs, security, and defense. There was a rebellion against the Sultanate of Brunei, which the British suppressed. Finally, Brunei gained complete independence from the United Kingdom, and this is what is celebrated on National Day every February.

World Bartender Day – February 24, 2022~International
World Bartender Day is celebrated across the globe every year on February 24. Bartenders are indispensable to the hospitality industry. Today, we cannot imagine a pub, bar, or nightclub without a bartender. They keep patrons well supplied with beverages, especially the alcoholic kind, and make sure that everyone is having a good time. If you are unsure about which drink to get or want to try something new, you are more likely to ask a bartender for help. Who knows, maybe this is how you will find your next favorite drink! The next time you enjoy a fun night out with your friends, don’t forget to thank the bartender.
HISTORY OF WORLD BARTENDER DAY Bartending might appear to be a modern profession, but it is one of the oldest professions known to man — the first bartending job was probably held in the 1400s. It is said to have emerged several thousand years ago in various locations such as Rome, Greece, and Asia. At the time, bartenders would have been the innkeepers and owners of alehouses who would make their own brews and liquors to serve the patrons.
It wasn’t until the 1800s that the common public would develop a somewhat favorable opinion of bartending and refrain from morally and ethically judging bartenders. This was when Jerry Thomas, the “father of bartending”, became popular for the special cocktails he created in his bars in New York City. Thomas was the first one to write a book on bartending, called The Bar-Tender’s Guide, alternatively referred to as How to Mix Drinks, which was published in 1862.
Since then, the profession of bartending has gained more respect for the creativity, skill, and attention to detail that is involved in creating, making, and serving up drinks — often to unruly customers. While the trade witnessed depression in the 1920s and early 1930s (when the United States went through a period of prohibition), bartenders have sprung back into action since then and today once cannot imagine a hospitality establishment without them. World Bartender Day celebrates the creative genius and talents of those at the bars all across the globe. The day might have emerged during a cocktail competition that happens in (joybelle ) Australia and New Zealand, (cyril50 , charlene ) called The Perfect Blend.

1Ashkent National Toast Day – February 24, 2022~U.K.~U.S.
National Toast Day is celebrated on the last Thursday in February and this year, it takes place on February 24. It pays homage to a food that is oft-ignored but has an oh-so-important role to play when it comes to breakfast, brunch, or even snacking purposes. The art of making toast is brilliant in both its simplicity and the variety of ways in which one can end up with toast. It’s a physical marvel too when one thinks of how different bread and toast are, despite them technically being the same thing. Toast can be crunchy, warm, and makes you want to eat a whole load more; whereas bread has a denser consistency which often satiates your appetite faster. Whatever the case, we love toast for how versatile it can also be.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL TOAST DAY National Toast Day was first observed in 2014, in the U.K. It was established by Tiptree World Bread Awards, with Brook Food, to celebrate the country’s love of toast and all the varieties of bread that can be used to make toast. Indeed, we’d go so far as to say that a love for toast is probably universal, as far as bread-consuming nations go, which is why its popularity has spread to the U.S. too. Our aim is to spread the word so that National Toast Day can be celebrated all around the world; after all, toast is something many of us may want to celebrate all day, every day!
To trace the history of toast is to go back to the origins of bread itself. The earliest evidence of flour dates back some 30,000 years back, so we know that people were using it to make bread of some sort (probably flatbread). Bread, as we know it today, may have been invented in Ancient Egypt, where the Egyptians discovered that if dough was left out, it would rise, and baking it after led to a lighter, fluffier consistency. By 3000 B.C. the closed oven was invented in Egypt, to bake leavened bread. It was then observed that leavened bread would become hard, if left out, and therefore difficult to eat. The solution? Scorching the bread proved to make it more palatable and increased its shelf life, hence toast was born. The word ‘toast’ originates from the Latin word ‘tostum’, meaning, ‘to burn or scorch’, as toasting bread over fire became popular in the Roman Empire. By and by, with the invention of the electric toaster and automatic bread slicers, toast became a staple in almost every urban household.

National Chili Day – February 24, 2022~U.S.
On February 24, we celebrate National Chili Day — a moment to pay homage to the legendary dish that brings people together, and can tear them apart. Chili is the ultimate people-pleaser, but it’s also the ultimate cook-off dish. Family recipes are guarded like crown jewels, and secret ingredients are never spoken of above a whisper. And the debates about what makes true chili — beans or no beans? —are fierce! But these are all part of what makes chili such an experience. When chili is being served — perhaps with some chopped onions and shredded cheese on top — everyone comes to the table.

I Hate Coriander Day – February 24, 2022~International
International I Hate Coriander Day is celebrated on February 24 each year and is a chance for haters of this herb to unite and have a good old coriander bashing session with the kindred spirits they can find. If the existence of coriander haters baffles you, there is even some research being done that suggests that hatred for coriander can actually be genetic. And before you judge, bear in mind that there is probably some food out there that really rubs your taste buds the wrong way. So read on to know more about why this little green garnish may not be so welcome atop some people’s dishes.
HISTORY OF I HATE CORIANDER DAY International I Hate Coriander Day originated in 2013, with the inception of a Facebook group entitled simply ‘I Hate Coriander.’ The sole purpose of creating the group was so that like-minded people could get together and express their utter disdain for the herb through messages and posts of all sorts. And before you laugh it off as an insignificant group, note that the number of members on it has risen to a following of more than 200,000. Such was the popularity of the group that there is even ‘I Hate Coriander’ merchandise being sold on the group. It also just goes to show that if you’re enterprising enough, money can be made from any endeavor on social media which attracts enough people.
Apparently, over 10% of the world hates coriander because it tastes like soap to them, according to members of the group, and some scientific research leads us to believe that this could be caused by a particular gene, called OR6A2, which affects the olfactory receptors. The study was conducted in 2012, with a sample size of 50,000 people, by a genetic testing company called 23andMe. Interestingly enough, the majority of people who hate coriander are of European ethnicity, and the very name comes from the Greek word ‘koris’ meaning ‘stink bug.’ Therefore, the main plea of the group is that restaurants state very clearly on their menus if any of their dishes contain coriander. The group has threatened to publicly shame any eating joints which ignore this request. Such is the shared hatred of this herb that it has garnered the name ‘the devil’s herb’, and it may just be the most hated single ingredient on earth.

Independence Day Estonia – February 24, 2022~Estonia
Independence Day in Estonia is a public holiday on February 24 each year. Independence Day is also Estonia’s National Day that marks the anniversary of the Declaration founding the Republic of Estonia on this day in 1918. Estonia is a country in Northern Europe that borders the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Finland. Home to more than 1,500 islands, Estonia’s diverse topography spans rocky beaches, old-growth forests, and many lakes. Tourists visit Estonia to see castles, churches, and hilltop fortresses. Estonia is home to some 1.3 million people. Estonians celebrate Independence Day with parades, concerts, and parties.
HISTORY OF INDEPENDENCE DAY ESTONIA On February 24, 1918, Estonia issued a declaration of independence. This was done by the new Soviet Russia, which was followed by a war with the Soviets to ensure Estonian liberty. After two years, on February 2, 1920, the war ended with the Tartu Peace Treaty. The treaty guaranteed Estonia’s Independence for all time. However, the treaty would not be honored, and the Soviets went on to break this pact. This would lead to Estonia being under Soviet control for the next 50 years.
In August 1939, Germany and the Soviet Union signed the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. The pact’s protocol divided Eastern Europe into spheres of influence, and Estonia was handed over to the Soviet sphere. During this time, the Soviet’s ‘Russification’ policy meant the Estonian flag and other national symbols were forbidden. In fact, local languages were restricted and Russian was made the country’s official language.
In 1991, Estonia re-established its sovereignty after the peaceful Singing Revolution against Soviet rule. This was a unique revolution where music was used as a tool of resistance and a declaration of intent. Estonians start their Independence Day at sunrise with the traditional flag-hoisting on Toompea, a hill in the capital, Tallinn. This is followed by the military parade in Freedom Square, an open-air free concert in central Tallinn, and the President’s reception in the evening. Meanwhile, in other Estonian towns, the flag is hoisted at public and private spaces in the morning, which is followed by church services and attending local celebrations. The current flag of Estonia was adopted after independence from Russia in 1918.

Flag Day Mexico – February 24, 2022~Mexico
Flag Day, or ‘Día de la Bandera’ as it’s known in Mexico, is celebrated on February 24 every year, since it was first established. For those who did not know, the modern-day Mexican flag depicts an eagle atop a cactus, eating a snake. This fascinating emblem stems from an Aztec legend where this sight was witnessed by the Aztecs and taken to be a sign from the gods. As a result, they built their empire on that spot, and today, that spot is Mexico City, the capital of Mexico. Therefore this day is a celebration of national pride for Mexicans the world over, and we are thrilled to join in the celebrations too, as a sign of solidarity and appreciation for all the Mexican culture contributes.
HISTORY OF FLAG DAY MEXICO Día de la Bandera (Flag Day) was first founded by General Lazaro Cardenas, the then-President of Mexico, in 1937. The event took place in front of a monument dedicated to General Vicente Guerrero — the first person to pledge allegiance to the flag of Mexico, back in 1821. However, the origins of this day can be traced back even further, to 1935, when Benito Ramirez, an employee of the Bank of Mexico, set up a special honor guard to celebrate the Mexican flag.
It was in 1821 that the Mexican flag was designed by Jose Magdaleno Ocampo, with the three colors representing religion, independence, and unity — the three key guarantees of the ‘Plan de Iguala.’ The Mexican flag is commonly known as the ‘Pendon Trigarante,’ and soon after it was designed, Mexico gained its independence from Spain. Today, the colors represent hope, purity, and blood.
It’s a day to recognize the struggle for independence against Spain, which the nation fought for, for 11 long years (known as the War of Independence). This war with Spain stretched from 1810 to 1821, following which the Catholic monarchy was overthrown and Mexico was declared as a federal republic (1823), consolidated in the Constitution in 1824. Though it is not an official holiday in Mexico, it is still a day that is celebrated with pride, as Mexicans hoist the flag atop buildings and businesses, and watch the military raise a giant Mexican flag as well. Further celebrations include a civic-military parade and an official event at the Mexican National Palace. Community celebrations can include plays and historical re-enactments.
