National Kahlua Day – February 27, 2022~U.S.
National Kahlua Day is celebrated on February 27 every year as a tribute to one of the greatest rich, creamy, alcoholic, coffee dessert beverages — yes, it is none other than Kahlua! Did you know that Kahlua is the world’s number one coffee liqueur? People love this coffee-flavored, rum-based liqueur.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL KAHLUA DAY When it comes to slightly sinful beverages loved by many, there is perhaps no better example than a glass of Kahlua! Kahlua is a coffee-flavored liqueur that originated in Hawaii. It is made from sugar cane, rum, and coffee beans. Some interpret the word ‘Kahlua’ as ‘lemonade’ in the Hawaiian language, which makes sense because it tastes like a combination of espresso and lemonade.
Kahlua has been said to be around for decades — since 1869 to be exact! However, the solid origins of Kahlua can be traced back to its invention in 1936. It was invented by two men, Senior Blanco and Montalvo Lara; they were also known as the Alvarez brothers. One was a food inventor who gave birth to an idea of rich and tasteful Arabica coffee, and the other was a chemist. They came together and created Kahlua from the finest ingredients that grow side by side in rural Veracruz.
In 1940, Kahlua was exported to the U.S., and it became a favorite drink of many. In the 1960s, Kahlua company led a creative ad campaign and created a female leadership, which was unique at that time. This gained media attention
Later in the 1980s, Kahlua grew in popularity and became the number one selling coffee liqueur in the world. Today, Kahlua is a brand with a unique history and an amazing history. It is loved by many in the world. Kahlua is the most famous of all Hawaiian drinks, and there are many different ways to enjoy it, but remember to drink and celebrate responsibly.

International Polar Bear Day – February 27, 2022~World
International Polar Bear Day on February 27 raises awareness on the issues facing polar bears and the ways in which we can reduce our carbon footprint. Climate change is a huge threat to polar bears’ existence and it’s up to us to take action and protect their future. Polar bears are classified as marine mammals, carrying with them a thick layer of body fat and a water-repellent coat to keep them insulated against the icy cold air and water they encounter on the sea ice of the Arctic Ocean. With their territory melting away beneath them, International Polar Bear Day is an important opportunity for us to remind ourselves what is at stake here, preserving the future of these magnificent mammals.
HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL POLAR BEAR DAY It’s been difficult for scientists to track down the origins of the polar bear but a recent discovery in Norway may have provided the answer. A rare jawbone found on the Norwegian island of Svalbard in 2004 allowed scientists to estimate that the species first walked the planet around 150,000 years ago.
Indigenous cultures have lived in the Arctic and hunted polar bears for thousands of years, contributing towards a balanced Arctic ecosystem. That all changed in the 1700s when hunters from Europe, Russia, and North America began to rapidly cut into the polar bear population. Without any regulations, people were able to trap as many polar bears as they liked, and the species suffered because of it.
By the 1950s things were getting worse due to the increasing use of fossil fuels. The burning of coal, oil, and gas melted the sea ice, causing ocean levels to rise and changing the landscape of the polar bear’s environment. Environmental groups began to push back on the polar bear’s behalf but their protests often fell on deaf ears as governments ignored their pleas to do more to protect the Arctic and in turn polar bears.
In 1973, the U.S, Denmark, Norway, and the former USSR signed the International Agreement on the Conservation of Polar Bears and their Habitat. The agreement regulated commercial hunting and the U.S. government classified polar bears as endangered. The non-profit organization Polar Bears International (PBI) was formed in 1994 and they made it their mission to establish action programs to protect the endangered polar bear.
They introduced the first International Polar Bear Day in 2011 and it has been celebrated every year since.

Anosmia Awareness Day – February 27, 2022~International
Anosmia Awareness Day is observed on February 27 every year. It is a day to spread awareness about anosmia, which is the loss of the sense of smell, or as some people call it, nose blind. Did you know that loss of smell is associated with diseases that affect brain cells like Alzheimer’s in the future? Yes, loss of sense of smell is not to be taken lightly, and people need to be educated to prevent anosmia.
HISTORY OF ANOSMIA AWARENESS DAY The medical term for the loss of smell is known as anosmia. It is most often caused by an infection or injury to your nose or brain and can be temporary or permanent depending on what has happened. There are two types of loss of smell — hyposmia and anosmia. Hyposmia is a partial loss of the sense of smell, whereas anosmia is when someone has completely lost their ability to smell anything at all!
Anosmia Awareness Day was established by Daniel Schein in 2012. Schein was diagnosed with anosmia in the fifth grade. But it was not until 2011 that he started his research about anosmia and decided to create an organization called Anosmia Awareness.
This is a non-profit organization to spread awareness for those without a sense of smell. They are also on a path to encourage research centers around the world to research treatment options for anosmia.
Anosmia affects over 200,000 people in the U.S. alone, and there is no real cure or treatment for it at this time. However, many of these patients have found ways to work around their condition with the help of others so you can too! Losing your sense of smell can be a scary thing. You may think that you are going to lose all of the wonderful things in life, like smelling flowers or tasting food, but there are some things that people with anosmia find helpful! So, be strong and pay a visit to your doctor.

National Pasty Week – February 27-March 5, 2022~United Kingdom
National Pasty Week’s (also called Cornish Pasty Week) annual week-long celebration begins in late February each year and honors the city of Cornwall’s favorite food — the pasty. This year, it takes place from February 27 to March 5. Traditionally a savory recipe, this British-origin (from Cornwall) dish is now both a sweet and savory dish, depending on the filling inside the shortcrust cover. The Cornish pasty — the original version — is so popular that more than 120 million are made each year.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL PASTY WEEK We cannot be sure of where and when, exactly, this delicious dish came to be, but do know it has been around since the 1300s. Older cookbooks — “Le Viandier” (circa 1300) and “Le Menagier de Paris” (1393) — contain many recipes for the pasty. The word is of French origin too and comes from the Mediaeval French word ‘paste’ or ‘pasta,’ which refers to a pie containing any ingredients.
The pasty was a common feature in the 16th and 17th centuries, becoming something of a favorite for the Victorian England elite class. Tides had turned by the 19th century, and this dish was now preferred by common families across the U.K., especially in Cornwall. A pastry case filled with veggies was a cheap way to fill stomachs; meat was often avoided as it was too expensive for the common person to afford.
Why the immense popularity in Cornwall? Famous for generations for being a mining town, Cornwall was full of settlers who worked in mines, and they would often take this cheap and easy meal down with them. This all-in-one food stayed warm and fresh for longer and didn’t require miners to climb back up the mine shafts to eat their lunches — important considering miners were paid according to the ground they covered. The less time spent going up mine shafts to eat, the more time they had to work, and could potentially earn more money.
The pasty became the standard fare for miners — called ‘crib’ or ‘croust’ in Cornish — its popularity influenced the ‘D’ shape of the dish too. Food historians think the crisp crust was created so miners could hold on to the pasty with their grubby hands without contaminating the food itself, and toss the leftover crust away.
According to popular tales, the discarded crusts didn’t go to waste — small mischief-making goblins who would otherwise cause trouble for miners, ate this crust as offerings and therefore behaved themselves.
By the mid-1800s, mining had declined in Cornwall, and many families moved to places that provided the work they were accustomed to. Miners — and their pasties — found their way to Australia, South Africa, and even the U.S. Subsequent immigrants picked up the pasty tradition and made it their own.
Now, pasties are made in many parts of the world and have their own versions — the Indian ‘samosa,’ the Chinese ‘shaobing,’ the Spanish ’empanada,’ and the Eastern European ‘pirog.’

Floral Design Day – February 28, 2022~U.S.
Floral Design Day celebrated on February 28, recognizes the art, history, and significance of floral designs. Did you know that floral designs are one of the important cultural art forms in the world? Yes, for thousands of years, floral design has been used in many forms across the world. Let’s explore a little more about this unique holiday and its origin!
HISTORY OF FLORAL DESIGN DAY The Floral Design Day was created with an idea to celebrate the wonderful art form of floral design and to honor the pioneer behind the growth and wide reach of floral arts in this world, Carl Rittner. The birthday of Rittner, February 28, 1914, is officially celebrated as the Floral Design Day in America every year.
The history of floral designs dates back to ancient Egypt, where the paintings, etchings, and carvings in tombs reveal bouquets made of lotus blossoms and buds. So, there is no doubt that humans have been involved in this art form from ancient days.
The rapid reach of floral designs started when Rittner gained interest in floral arts. He attended Boston University, where he received his Master’s degree in Education. To spread this art worldwide, he started Rittner’s School of Floral Design in 1947. In 1995, the Governor of Massachusetts, William F. Weld, proclaimed February 28 as Floral Design Day.
From its opening until today, his school is teaching the many shapes and forms of floral designs to students across the world. They specialize in teaching floral designing and it is licensed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Today, floral design has grown as a multibillion-dollar industry that includes floral arrangements for special events, bouquets for weddings and holidays, and many, and the contribution of Rittner is appreciated by many. Thus, this day is all about honoring and celebrating the art, beauty, and grace of floral arrangements and those involved in developing this unique art form.

International Sword Swallowers Day – February 28, 2022~International
If you enjoy all that is weird and wonderful, then International Sword Swallowers Day on February 28 is the day for you.
Sword swallowers, a.k.a. those guys who pass long, pointy, sharp instruments through their mouths into their stomachs, often don’t get the same level of fame and respect as other entertainers. This holiday was specially created to recognize and appreciate sword swallowers while educating people about their contribution to the world.
This day has another, higher purpose, too — it attempts to eradicate all myths surrounding sword swallowing and bring global attention to how the sword swallowing community has helped both medically and scientifically.
The month of February also plays host to National Swallowing Disorders Month. This initiative was formed to raise money for esophageal cancer research and fund medical treatment of injured sword swallowers.
HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL SWORD SWALLOWERS DAY Many moons ago (in 2000 B.C.), fakirs and shaman priests in India developed this art to demonstrate their power and bond with their gods. They also came up with fire-walking on hot coals, snake handling, and other ascetic religious practices.
Originating in India, this practice slowly spread around the world. It was seen during the Teutonic fight for Rome in 410 A.D. In China, around 750 A.D., Festivals around the Roman empire held sword swallowing as a part of the entertainment. By the 8th century, a type of Japanese ‘street theater’ called Sangaku could also trace its origins back to sword-swallowing.
This art form soon made its way to Europe from Rome and Greece, and medieval jongleurs and other street performers would exhibit their skills in this area. While the Catholic Church banned such street performances during the Middle Ages, common folk still enjoyed a good sword-swallowing performance.
By the 1800s, interest in street performances dwindled in Europe, and with it, the interest in sword-swallowing. The end of the 19th century brought sword swallowing to America via the World Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and a new generation of performers was born.
Around this time, various articles suggest sword swallowers had been instrumental in medical and scientific breakthroughs. First, a Scottish physicist used a sword swallower to study the human digestive system. In 1868, Dr. Adolph Kussmaul reportedly used a sword swallower to invent the endoscope. As the years went by, primary showcases for sword swallowers decreased, sword swallowers in circuses and sideshows became a rare sight.
There are very few sword swallowers practicing their craft in this day and age. According to statistics, most of them hail from the Indian city of Andhra Pradesh, where the knowledge, experience, and practice of sword swallowing is passed down from father to son.
As this art form became a story in history rather than a practiced art form, enthusiasts like Dan Meyer, the president and founder of Sword Swallowers Association International and sword swallower himself, decided things had to change.
Meyer realized that there are national holidays for everyone — mothers, fathers, grandparents — so why not sword swallowers? According to him, very few people realize how much performers put themselves at risk to entertain the masses. So, the S.S.A.I. created International Sword Swallowers Day.

Linus Pauling Day – February 28, 2022~U.S.
Linus Pauling Day is on February 28 each year. Scientist, health advocate, and peace activist. The list of achievements of this author and educator would be as long as a thesis. The Oregon-born chemical engineer is best known for his outstanding contributions to chemistry and biochemistry, particularly in illuminating the nature of chemical bonds. Considered the father of molecular biology, Pauling is the only person in history to win two Nobel Prizes: in 1954 for Chemistry and in 1962 for leading efforts against weapons of mass destruction and the nuclear arms race. The Oregon State University commemorates his achievements every year on February 28, which is Pauling’s birthday.
HISTORY OF LINUS PAULING DAY Linus Pauling was born in Portland, Oregon where his love for science began. As a child, he collected laboratory equipment and carried out several chemistry experiments at home. He spent all of his after-school hours working in his school’s chemistry lab.
In 1922, Pauling completed a degree in chemical engineering from Oregon State College. Soon after, he became a Teaching Fellow at the California Institute of Technology, which would become a home away from home. The institute would also be the birthplace of several scientific breakthroughs in the course of his career. In 1925, he earned a doctorate in physical chemistry and mathematical physics.
Research on molecular structures dominated much of his early years at the California Institute of Technology. He came up with ‘Pauling’s rules’ that enabled scientists to determine and accurately predict crystal structures.
By the mid-1930s, Pauling began to take a keen interest in biological molecules like protein. His studies uncovered the molecular causes for sickle-cell anemia, and a new class of disease – the molecular disease – was born. He also came up with the ‘alpha helix’ or the structure of proteins. Many consider him the father of molecular biology for these achievements and more. He wrote hundreds of papers and scientific articles that informed the course of chemistry during this time.
In 1954, Pauling received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. The years that followed became a turning point for Pauling. He was deeply affected by the devastation caused by the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Along with other scientists, he passionately advocated against nuclear arms in international politics. Pauling played a pivotal role in getting the U.S., Great Britain, and the Soviet Union to sign a nuclear test ban treaty on October 10, 1963. On the same day, the Nobel Committee announced that Pauling had won the Nobel Peace Prize.

National Public Sleeping Day – February 28, 2022~U.S.
Sleep escapes many people throughout the night so if you need a little shut-eye today, even while in public, it’s totally fine because it’s National Public Sleeping Day, on February 28. Yes, if you feel like you’re going to nod off on that park bench or at the beach, no one will think poorly of you. It’s actually what we are all called to do today, so grab a pillow and be prepared for that magical moment when you can doze off in public.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL PUBLIC SLEEPING DAY Almost one-third of Americans are getting less than six hours of sleep per night. Considering the recommended number of hours of sleep we should get each night is eight hours, we’re talking about some serious sleep deprivation for a fairly large percentage of people.
While no one has claimed to be the founder of National Public Sleeping Day, whoever it was, was clearly onto something. Maybe they had seen so many of their fellow Americans asleep in public, they felt we all needed to be given a free pass for just one day.
If you take a few moments to think of all the times you’ve fallen asleep in public, you’ll realize it is not at all a rare occurrence! The key for today is preparation. If you want to be an overt public sleeper, a sleeping bag will get the job done. If you are still a little uncomfortable about sleeping in public, you’ll want some sunglasses, a hat, or a newspaper.
Of course, you can always point to this article as your permission to indulge in some public sleeping but in the event that you are at work and your boss walks in while your head is down, let the first word you say be “Amen.”

Peace Memorial Day (228 Memorial Day) – February 28, 2022~Taiwan
Peace Memorial Day is a national holiday in Taiwan every year on February 28. A somber remembrance for the thousands of innocent lives lost during a brutal military crackdown by Chinese forces in 1947. The day is significant in the development of a distinct Taiwanese identity and their call for peace on this day recognizes the country’s tremendous loss. However, the message isn’t as far removed as it seems as it’s a day that unites all of us through the universal lens of compassion for all people, that crosses borders. Each year, Taiwan observes Peace Memorial Day through memorial services, concerts, ceremonies, and exhibitions.
HISTORY OF PEACE MEMORIAL DAY (228 MEMORIAL DAY) The story behind Peace Memorial Day comes from a long history of colonialism and oppression. In 1895, Taiwan came under 50 years of Japanese dominion after China’s defeat in the First Sino-Japanese War. When the Japanese surrendered at the end of World War II in 1945, the Republic of China (ROC) regained administrative control.
The mood was initially jubilant as the Taiwanese celebrated the end of Japanese rule but this was short-lived. The Kuomintang (K.M.T.) troops from the ROC proceeded to loot the Taiwanese. Over time, the administration monopolized the production and supply of crucial commodities like paper, tea, and took over mines and factories. The K.M.T. administration’s overall inefficiency and corrupt governance plunged the economy into disarray.
On February 27, 1947, agents of the Tobacco Monopoly Bureau took things too far when they assaulted a 40-year-old widow, Lin Jiang-Mai while confiscating contraband cigarettes. As angry crowds gathered, the agents attempted to flee from the scene and, in the process, ended up killing a bystander. On February 28, furious protests erupted, resulting in the Taiwanese people seizing control of military bases and the Taipei administration.
The K.M.T. countered with a brutal crackdown on March 8 on the orders of Governor-General Chen Yi. For three days, the troops went on an indiscriminate looting and killing spree — a massacre that would signal the beginning of the ‘White Terror,’ 38 years of brutal martial law.
Following Chen Yi’s dismissal and subsequent execution in 1950, families of victims received monetary compensation. Yet, even after the lifting of martial law in 1987, the 228 massacres remained a heavily censored topic. Through the years, citizens’ groups rallied to lift the taboo around 228. Their efforts paid off when in 1995, President Lee Teng-Hui issued a formal apology and declared February 28 Peace Memorial Day.

Rare Disease Day – February 28, 2022~World
This February 28 is Rare Disease Day. With so many things going on in the world around us, it’s very easy to put off important things like health. That’s why the last day of February each year we mark our calendars to bring awareness to rare diseases. An average of 1 in 20 people live with a rare disease at least once in their lifetime, few of which see any sign of a cure. The goal of Rare Disease Day is to improve knowledge amongst the general public of rare diseases while encouraging researchers and decision makers to address the needs of those living with rare diseases.
HISTORY OF RARE DISEASE DAY Founded by the European Organization for Rare Diseases, the first Rare Disease Day was celebrated in 2008 on February 29 . A “rare” date that happens only once every four years. Since then, Rare Disease Day has taken place on the last day of February, a month known for having a rare number of days. The day is held to raise awareness for rare diseases and improve access to treatment and medical representation for individuals with rare diseases and their families. Treatment for many rare diseases is insufficient, as are the social networks to support individuals with rare diseases and their families.
Individuals observing Rare Disease Day take part in walks and press conferences, organize fundraisers, write en masse to government representatives, along with holding events, gatherings, and campaigns. The day also includes an open session of the European Parliament specifically dedicated to discussing policy issues relating to rare diseases. The days leading up to Rare Disease Day include other policy-related events in numerous locations, such as a reception in the British Parliament where policy makers meet with individuals with rare diseases to discuss issues such as equal access and availability of prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.
Each year since its beginning there have been thousands of events stemming from races and walks to art exhibits and workshops. These events are held to bring attention to policy makers and inspire change in the community. Historical monuments such as the Colosseum and the Empire State building have taken steps in sending messages of solidarity on this day by lighting up with the iconic pink, blue, and green colors, providing hope for millions world-wide.

Independence Movement Day – March 1, 2022~South Korea
Independence Movement Day is a holiday celebrated in South Korea on March 1 every year. This day marks one of the earliest public displays of Korean resistance. It took place on March 1, 1919, which gives it’s named ‘Samil Jeol’, Three-One Movement, or March First Movement. An estimated two million people attended peaceful demonstrations to protest Japan’s occupation of Korea. The demonstrations started in Korea’s capital city Seoul, and soon spread to other parts of the country. The Korean Declaration of Independence was read at a rally in Tapgol Park.
HISTORY OF INDEPENDENCE MOVEMENT DAY Independence Movement Day became a national commemoration day in 1946 — one year after Korea gained independence. It was declared a national holiday on May 24, 1949. Thirty-three Korean religious and cultural leaders started the movement. They created a Korean Proclamation of Independence to oppose the Japanese rule of Korea that lasted from 1910 to 1945. Koreans had been denied many freedoms. A mass demonstration was organized in Seoul on March 1, 1919, which was their late emperor’s commemoration day.
The 33 leaders hoped to draw international attention and pressure on Japan and end her colonial rule in Korea. The proclamation was signed and read in town, and many people gathered to hear a student named Chung Jae-Yong read the declaration. The gathering formed a peaceful procession. Other special delegates of the movement read the independence proclamation from designated places around the country at precisely 2 p.m. that day.
The movement lasted 12 months until the Japanese suppressed it. By this time, about two million Koreans had joined more than 1,500 demonstrations across the country. During the movements, it was recorded that about 7,000 people were killed, and about 16,000 people were wounded. Approximately 715 homes, 47 churches, and two schools were destroyed by fire. Over 46,000 people were arrested, and about 10,000 were tried and convicted.

National Peanut Butter Lover's Day – March 1, 2022~U.S.
Peanut butter is a perfect food, and on March 1, we honor that perfection with National Peanut Butter Lover’s Day. Peanut butter’s superb performance as a food comes from its versatility: it can be crunchy and it can be smooth; it’s healthy, but it’s also indulgent; it can go sweet, but can also go savory. We like it for every meal — peanut butter toast for breakfast, peanut butter sandwiches for lunch, peanut sauce for dinner, peanut butter ice cream for dessert — and our dogs might love it even more than we do. Celebrate peanut butter with the peanut butter lovers in your life!

Fat Tuesday – March 1, 2022~U.S.
Fat Tuesday or ‘Mardi Gras’ is on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday and at the start of Lent. We’re making sure that you have the time of your life during this week-long period of festivities. The origins of Mardi Gras link back to pagan celebrations of the arrival of spring and fertility, such as the Roman festivals of Saturnalia that celebrated the same and that of Lupercalia which was also characterized by banqueting and merrymaking. This day is celebrated with parades and feasts before the start of the fasting season of Lent.
HISTORY OF FAT TUESDAY ‘Mardi Gras’ is French for Fat Tuesday. It’s also called Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Tuesday in different parts of the world. Mardi Gras is synonymous with carnival celebrations in New Orleans, Venice, and Rio, although the day is also celebrated in a similar fashion in countries with large Roman Catholic populations.
Festivities similar to Mardi Gras date back to ancient Roman times where people celebrated the harvest season. When Christianity arrived in Rome, these popular local traditions were incorporated into the new faith. The debauchery typical of Mardi Gras precedes Lent, the 40-day period of fasting and penance leading to Easter Sunday.
As Christianity and Mardi Gras spread from Rome to other European countries, new traditions were born and some old ones took on new forms. What began as a holiday rooted in religious tradition became a cultural phenomenon, leading to binging and parties that weren’t always followed by the 40-days of penance.
Mardi Gras celebrations began in America when French explorers Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville and Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville landed near present-day New Orleans, Louisiana. A few years later, New Orleans and other French settlements observed the holiday with street parties, masked balls, and lavish dinners organized by social clubs called ‘Krewes.’
Today, Mardi Gras is celebrated all over the world integrating local styles and native traditions. From Rio’s weeklong Carnival festivities to Quebec’s Winter Carnival and Germany’s Karneval that includes parades, costume balls, and a tradition where women cut off men’s ties to symbolize women’s power.
Besides the procession of floats, colorful beads also feature in celebrations in the U.S. and a king cake with a trinket or baby figurine, to represent the Christ Child, baked inside it.

Isra and Mi'raj – March 1, 2022~World
Within Islam, Isra and Mi’raj, celebrated on the 27th day of the 7th month of the Muslim calendar, refers to a miraculous nighttime journey undertaken by the Prophet Muhammad, in two legs. First from Mecca to Jerusalem, and then from Jerusalem to the heavens. Believers consider it both a physical and a spiritual journey that was assisted by Allah himself — for example, by providing Muhammad with a pegasus-like steed, the Buraq, to ride during the first part of the journey.
HISTORY OF ISRA AND MI'RAJ There is some dispute among scholars as to whether “the farthest mosque,” the Al-Aqsa, was a literal brick-and-mortar mosque or just a simple place of prayer, but adherents to the Muslim faith agree that Muhammed’s journey was truly a miracle, because in order to travel by normal methods between Mecca and Jerusalem, it would take more than a month, not the single night of Isra and Mi’raj.
A bit of background on Isra and Mi‘raj — the events occurred at a time when Muhammad was faced with deep difficulty. He had been tested with the passing of two of the dearest people in his life, the year these events took place becoming known as ‘Am al-Huzun, the Year of Sorrow. His uncle Abu Talib, an indispensable mentor, had passed on, along with his wife, Khadijah, who had been the comfort of his life.
Although there are different accounts of what occurred during the Mi’raj, most Islamic narratives have the same elements. Allah ascended the Prophet Muhammad from the Dome of the Rock through the skies or heaven, with the Angel Jibreel or Gabriel. Muhammad not only saw many miraculous sights and numerous angels, he also met a different prophet at each of the seven levels of heaven. First Adam, then John the Baptist and Jesus, then Joseph, then Idris, then Aaron, then Moses, and lastly Abraham.
After Muhammad meets with Abraham, he continues on to meet Allah without the Angel Gabriel. It is here when Allah gave the ummah (Muslims) the gift of compulsory salah or prayer. Allah tells Muhammad that his people must pray 50 times a day, but as Muhammad descends back to Earth, he meets Moses who tells Muhammad to go back to Allah and ask for fewer prayers because 50 is too many. Muhammad goes between Moses and Allah nine times until the prayers are reduced to the five daily prayers, which Allah will reward tenfold.
Finally, the Prophet Muhammad was taken back down to Al-Asqa and returned to Makkah. As he was transported home, he saw various caravans heading towards Makkah, which he would later describe to the Quraysh as proof that he really had made his miraculous journey. The entire journey had taken place in less than a night, and there were many who would mock Muhammad for making such a claim. For Muslims, however, the story was a source of wonder and hope, as it continues to be for many Muslims today.

Maha Shivaratri – March 1, 2022~International
Maha Shivaratri is celebrated on the Krishna Paksha of Phalguna month, which results in different dates every year. The following day after midnight, puja is celebrated with feasting, fairs, and more. Many people also observe a fast on this day. Members of the South Indian Lingayat sect give gifts to their gurus or spiritual guides.
HISTORY OF MAHA SHIVARATRI Maha Shivaratri is a major Hindu festival celebrated in honor of the god Shiva. It also refers to the night when Lord Shiva performs the heavenly dance of creation, preservation, and destruction. There are 12 Shivaratris in a year; however, Maha Shivaratri is especially auspicious. This night marks the convergence of Shiva and Shakti, which means the masculine and feminine energies that balance the world.
In Hinduism, this is a solemn festival marking the overcoming of darkness and ignorance in life. It is reserved for introspection and leaving behind things that come in the way of success and growth. It is a day where one can work towards letting go of sins, embarking on a journey of righteousness, and ultimately attain moksha on judgment day.
The celebrations take place across India according to the customs dictated in the region. Many people celebrate early in the morning, while some perform puja all night. Devotees even observe a day-long fast, only breaking it the next day after a bath. This fast is more of a test of one’s determination rather than to attain blessings. In 1864, Alexander Cunningham documented a fair and dance festival on Maha Shivaratri that took place at Khajuraho Shiva temples, involving Shaiva pilgrims camped over miles around the temple complex.
Outside India, Nepal also celebrates Maha Shivaratri, and it is, in fact, a national Holiday. The main celebration takes place in the Pashupatinath temple. Even in Pakistan, the Hindus visit Shiva temples, and the most important festival is the three-day affair in the Umerkot Shiv Mandir.
Maha Shivaratri is thus an extremely sacred day to Hindus across the globe and is observed with much enthusiasm.

National Pig Day – March 1, 2022~U.S.
National Pig Day, celebrated annually on March 1, is the perfect time to celebrate how much pigs have become part of American culture. We see pigs in art, costumes, stuffed animals, collectables, piggy banks, movies, books and, of course, on the dinner table. Pigs have lived throughout the country on farms and in zoos for many years and even in our homes as pets! It’s only fitting to have a day dedicated to this easily recognizable, endearing creature and learn more about how they are part of our culture and history.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL PIG DAY Fossil records show pigs roamed the Earth as early as 40 million years ago, and the animals’ descendants are believed to have first been domesticated around 9,000 years ago in current day China and parts of western Asia. Later, about 3,500 years ago, Romans introduced breeding for pigs. Pork consumption was banned in parts of Asia and the Middle East, however, Europeans continued refining purpose-driven pig breeds up to the 1500’s.
It was around this time when domesticated pigs first set “hoof” on North American soils. Christopher Columbus is believed to have eight pigs along his journey while travelling to Cuba in 1493 after his initial voyage to the “New World.” Columbus’ successor in exploring the America’s, Hernando de Soto, brought 13 of the animals with him when first landing in today’s Tampa Bay, Florida, making the first domesticated pigs in what would become the United States of America.
National Pig Day began in 1972 when two sisters, Ellen Stanley and Mary Lynne Rave, decided it was time “to accord to the pig its rightful, though generally unrecognized, place as one of man’s most intellectual and domesticated animals”.
The first official celebration took place that year with the intent of the holiday to respectfully remember the pig as opposed to serving it as the main meal. Since then, cities across the country plan fun events such as a “snort off” competition, pig parades, and pig-themed arts and crafts activities.
As with dogs and cats, potbellied pigs have made great pets and there are over 1 million of them throughout the US and Canada today. For most people, the most frequent interaction with pigs is indeed at the dinner table. Pork is the most popular meat worldwide with over 80 million tons produced each year making up 40% of all meat consumption. We would be remiss to not mention our appreciation for all things pork as we celebrate National Pig Day.

National Wedding Planning Day was created to get couples inspired for their wedding-planning journey and launch them into the process. According to their studies, almost 40% of all proposals occur between November and February. National Wedding Planning Day serves as an inspiration for newly engaged couples to start actually planning their wedding. The Knot makes the entire wedding-planning process easier, and their motivation behind the creation of the occasion was just that.
On this day each year, The Knot connects with users to offer advice and answer wedding-related FAQs in real-time. In the past, this day has included fun events like live Facebook sessions with The Knot and giveaways, as well as extra perks for those who sign up to be members of The Knot. This is a perfect opportunity to get the answers to all your wedding planning questions and to get inspired. The Knot strives to make every event bigger and better than the previous year’s one.

Refired Not Retired Day – March 1, 2022~U.S.
If you’re newly retired, then Refired Not Retired Day on March 1 is the day for you! This day was created with the sole purpose of turning the narrative of a boring retirement plan around. Phyllis May created this day after an unplanned early retirement at the age of 55, and a divorce around the same time. She packed up her bags, moved to Key West, Florida, and has been living la vida loca ever since. Retirement is an exciting time in life when you can put the stresses of the working world behind you and focus on all the things you’ve never had time to do.
HISTORY OF REFIRED NOT RETIRED DAY Retirement is seen as a time in one’s life where you are done with the struggles of earning a living and get to have a quiet reflective life with your and loved ones. However, Refired Not Retired Day was created to turn that narrative around. Retirement is a time of freedom, a time to explore the things you’ve always wanted to, and to find new passions in life. It’s a time to live life to its fullest, and Phyllis May knew this.
Phyllis spent 34 years as an educator and retired at the age of 55. Prior to that, she had no solid retirement plans, her husband had left her, and her daughter was off to college. Over and above all this upheaval, she also had to have her sick dog put down. She was alone in a community where she had spent 25 years of her life and was at a point where most retirees find themselves, asking, “what now?”
She finally came to the realization that nothing was holding her back anymore. It was on March 1, 1998, that she packed up her bags and moved to Key West Florida, not knowing a soul. She also didn’t know she’d be setting an iconic example that would be marked by that very date.
After her move, Phyllis explored a variety of menial jobs. She worked as a concierge, at a bed and breakfast, and even at a Caribbean gift shop called The Pelican Poop Shop! She eventually found her calling by hosting a T.V. show for a year, and publishing her first book, “Keys to Paradise…a fun guide to Key West.”
For two years after that, she traveled throughout the eastern United States and Puerto Rico doing seminars for a company, as well as her own seminars. Refired Not Retired Day was created in honor of her adventurous post-retirement years, and as an encouragement to other retirees to seize the opportunity to live those years to the fullest.
