Wear a Dress Day – June 1, 2021
Wear a Dress Day is celebrated every June 1 and gives women an opportunity to sport their favorite dress. This includes dresses of all sorts, designs, and patterns — all that is important is that it’s a dress you love. Why create a day that is all about dresses, you ask? Well, the fact is, dresses are easy to wear and super comfy, especially in the hot summer weather when you begin to sweat the minute you step out of an air-conditioned space. So use this occasion to dump your jeans and adorn a cute dress that makes you look oh so lovely.

World Reef Awareness Day – June 1, 2021
World Reef Awareness Day is on June 1 and helps to create awareness among various business communities and the general public about the fragile biological system of our oceans’ coral reefs. This day unites people belonging to different backgrounds including environmentalists and social activists to come up with various ideas and techniques to protect the ecosystems of our reefs from deteriorating.
HISTORY OF WORLD REEF AWARENESS DAY The oldest corals appeared about 500 million years ago or even earlier. Researchers suggest that they began as plain, solitary organisms and, with time and constant environmental changes, transformed into the beautiful coral reefs that exist today.
During an ice age around 440 million years ago, sea temperatures dropped at an exponential rate and a large number of corals began diminishing from the ocean. This is called the Ordovician-Silurian Extinction Event. Around 410 million years ago, in the Devonian period, corals began to appear again. During the end of this period, stony corals started growing, which were a rare form of reef back then. Then, around 350 million years ago, corals disappeared again due to unstable sea levels.
100 million years later, corals appeared once again only to be wiped out once more by the Permian-Triassic Extinction 250 million years ago, where over 90% of sea creatures were affected. Reduced oxygen levels and increased carbon dioxide in the sea caused this tragic extinction event.
After disappearing and reappearing for another few million years, coral reefs finally reappeared 46 million years ago and disappeared for the last time during the mid-Eocene era. 20 million years later, they finally made a comeback in the form of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, which was found by British explorer Captain James Cook in 1770.
Lately, some of the most beneficial reefs have been diminishing because of coral blanching, rising ocean temperatures, and toxic pollution. Moreover, the use of harmful sunscreens and increased tourism are also considered threats to the well-being of the coral reefs.

National Olive Day – June 1, 2021
The olive has its roots in a traditional Mediterranean diet, but it’s enjoyed worldwide these days. So National Olive Day on June 1 is a great opportunity to find a way to incorporate some olives into your diet! Perhaps your local grocer has an olive bar, allowing you to select from the numerous varieties of olives. Or maybe you’ve received an olive at your local bar, as garnish for a martini. (Even James Bond made the switch to an olive garnished martini in the famous spy’s latest movie, Spectre.) Olives have more nutritional benefits than you might think. They offer a host of healthy types of fats and fatty acids, while also providing a natural source of iron. And there are far more ways to prepare olives than you probably know. Olives are grown on trees, and they can be grown for serving as a table fruit or for producing oil. If you cook with olive oil, you can receive many of the same health benefits that eating olives provide, including the introduction of healthy fats. Grocers carry a wide variety of olive oils, so you have plenty of options for incorporating them into your recipes. National Olive Day is a great day to try eating some new varieties of olives. And it’s also a great day for learning the magic trick for getting pimento inside the green olive! (A high speed machine pits the olive and then stuffs in pimento, which, unfortunately, isn’t all that magical.)

National Hazelnut Cake Day – June 1, 2021
National Hazelnut Cake Day is celebrated on June 1 to raise a toast to the tasty hazelnut cake. On this day, it is customary to eat some hazelnut cake. Hazelnut cakes are one of the most popular cakes in America. Their multiple varieties make them a great choice for different people with varied tastes.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL HAZELNUT CAKE DAY References to hazelnuts are frequent in the Bible as well as ancient Greek and Roman mythology in which they were believed to have healing powers. Pliny the Elder, a Roman scholar in the 1st century A.D, and Greek philosopher and teacher of botany Theophrastus (born in around 370 B.C.), both wrote extensively about hazelnuts.
In America, in the pre-European era, native tribes utilized hazelnuts that grew in the eastern woodlands and Oregon and California. Roasted hazelnuts were used for oils and eating raw. The milk of the hazelnut was used for medicinal purposes, like curing coughs and colds. The roots were used to make a blue dye for fabrics, while the branches were used for arrow shafts, basketry, and more.
The arrival of domestic hazelnuts in America took place with the immigration of Europeans to the U.S. A commercial nursery for hazelnut trees was established by Robert Prince in Flushing in 1737. This was after Lewis and Clark brought back specimens of native hazelnuts from their expedition, which were the very specimens that were grown by Prince in his nursery. The legacy of American hazelnuts began in Scottsburg, Oregon, in 1856. Retired English sailor Sam Strickland settled in Douglas County where he planted the first known hazelnut tree in the Pacific Northwest. And now, 160 years later, Oregon is known for the world’s finest hazelnuts.
Hazelnuts are known by several names, including Pontic, filbert, and cobnuts. They are native to the Northern and Southeastern U.S., along with in the Midwest and Canada.

Republic Day Italy – June 2, 2021
Italian Republic Day, also widely known as ‘Festa della Repubblica’ for Italians, is nationally celebrated in Italy on June 2, every year. The historical day commemorates the institutional referendum of 1946 when Italians were called to take a vote and decide the form of their government after World War II. With a flood of votes, they chose to be a republic with a constituent assembly and sent the kingdom to exile. So, on this day, a massive celebration takes place in the city of Rome to celebrate the creation of the Italian Republic.

National Leave the Office Early Day – June 2, 2021
National Leave the Office Early Day on June 2 is for those of you who find yourself living to work instead of working to live. The annual holiday was founded by employee productivity expert Laura Stack in 2004 to raise awareness of the benefits of increased workplace productivity. When the unofficial holiday falls on a weekend, the day is celebrated on either Friday, June 1, or Monday, June 3. The purpose of National Leave the Office Early Day is to demonstrate how making small adjustments in the way we approach our work can greatly improve the results of our work, allowing workers to become more productive while in the office and spending fewer hours working in the office.

Chimborazo Day – June 3, 2021
Chimborazo Day is celebrated on June 3 every year. Although it isn’t the tallest peak on the planet, Chimborazo mountain holds the distinction of being the highest point on Earth. It is an inactive stratovolcano in the Cordillera Occidental range of the Andes in Ecuador. The mountain is measured at an elevation of 20,000 feet, which makes it the highest mountain in Ecuador. The Chimborazo is also a top destination for mountaineers. On this day, revelers gather together to celebrate the farthest point from the Earth’s center and the spirit of mountaineering.

Corpus Christi – June 3, 2021
Corpus Christi is a Christian festival that is celebrated annually on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday, on June 3 this year. On this day, devout Christians gather together to honor the sacred body of Jesus Christ. The day is also known as Corpus Domini, which literally translates to ‘body and blood of Christ,’ while some also call it the Feast of Corpus Christi. Unlike other Christian festivals, Corpus Christi is celebrated uniquely in different cultures of the world. The most common way of celebrating the day is by consuming bread and wine — the symbols of the body and blood of Christ.

Love Conquers All Day – June 3, 2021
Love Conquers All Day is celebrated on June 3 every year as a day to cherish our loved ones. No matter how tough life gets, the sailing becomes smoother with our loved ones at our side. It is a day to express gratitude and love to those who matter and recognize love as an emotion that makes the world go around. A day of joy and warmth, you can celebrate it with your friends, family, partners, pets, or anyone whom you love and cherish!
HISTORY OF LOVE CONQUERS ALL DAY Love is an emotion that is probably as old as humans themselves. It is described as a sublime feeling that positively affects our mental and emotional well-being. The Greek philosophers identified six different forms of love: familial love, friendly love, romantic love, self-love, guest love, and divine love. Today, love also exists as unrequited love, empty love, companionate love, consummate love, infatuated love, self-love, and courtly love. Every culture has its own unique definitions of love and some also celebrate love as a part of religion and spirituality. It is also a common subject of art, literature, poetry, movies, and music.
The famous expression, ‘love conquers all,’ is credited to the Roman poet Virgil. These lines are found in Virgil’s “Eclogues” and were originally written in Latin. When translated to English, “Amor vincit omnia, et nos cedamus amori” means “Love conquers all things, so we too shall yield to love.” The expression suggests that there is no force in the world that cannot be overcome by love.
The phrase also finds a mention in religious scriptures like the Bible. It preaches that God loves everyone and those who are kind will be rewarded with love and joy. The Bible says that vices like hatred, manipulation, and deception are not fought with weapons, but love. Although the phrase “love conquers all” does not exist in the Bible, many verses preach a similar sentiment.

National Egg Day – June 3, 2021
National Egg Day on June 3 finds eggs finally breaking out of their shell.
Eggs had some tough years as health experts fretted about the high cholesterol content. But after a revision of the American Heart Association’s guidelines in 2000, the health benefits of eggs seemed to outweigh the concerns. The AHA says healthy adults can enjoy an egg per day and easily remain within the daily cholesterol limit.
Also, a single egg has only 75 calories, which is great for those looking to lose weight. And the seven grams of protein in an average egg almost makes this a superfood with a great calorie-to-protein ratio. So those of us who are big fans of poached, scrambled, over easy, hard-boiled, fried, sunny-side-up, or soft-boiled eggs can feel free to use National Egg Day to utter that timeless phrase, “How do you want your eggs?” And it doesn’t matter if it’s 7am, 7pm, or somewhere in between.
Eggs are great to eat anytime … or any day, for that matter.

National Moonshine Day – June 3, 2021
Moonshine, once a fiery (and illegal) homemade liquor, has now gone legit. Still, the drink conjures up colorful early 20th century memories of Prohibition, fast cars, and makeshift stills in the Appalachian woods. So, when it’s time to celebrate National Moonshine Day on June 3, you can indulge guilt-free.
The drink achieved legendary status upon the passage of the 18th Amendment (Prohibition) in 1919. At that point, Americans who wanted to drink alcohol had to turn to the black market of the day, which belonged to the moonshiners and bootleggers. They distilled the moonshine and then delivered it, making criminals of everyone involved.
Today large distilleries sell moonshine, looking to rekindle nostalgic memories of the illicit drink. But the days of cheap, questionable brews with deadly contaminants are thankfully over.

World Bicycle Day – June 3, 2021
For many of us, riding a bicycle without training wheels is the first challenging physical activity we ever learn how to master. We all remember, don’t we? A running start. The protective hand secured to the bicycle seat is released. And then — ZOOM! — the child is off and peddling, and a lifetime of adventure and freedom awaits aboard a succession of beloved two-wheeled conveyances. In the spirit of that very first trip, let’s take a closer look at World Bicycle Day, June 3, shall we?

World Cider Day – June 3, 2021
Every June 3, cider enthusiasts around the world clink their glasses together and make a toast to World Cider Day. This apple-based drink is adored and considered a favorite from Japan to America. This June 3, gather your friends, pour a few pints, and enjoy the familiar crispness of a delicious cider!
HISTORY OF WORLD CIDER DAY By the time the Romans invaded England around 55 BCE, they found that cider was already being enjoyed among the Celts. Apple trees had already been introduced to the landscape from forests around Kazakhstan and were well established across Europe and Asia. It was in southern England, France, and Spain that the process of fermenting (and later distilling) the fruit was perfected.
In America, John Chapman ( who we all know better as Johnny Appleseed) established apple nurseries along the edge of the frontier in the early 19th century. Since he was heavily against grafting apple trees — a popular process in Europe consisting of joining together tissues of a plant in order to reproduce genetically identical fruit — the cider made at the time were from apples specifically unique to America.
Though in most countries, cider is automatically considered a boozy drink made from Apples, in the United States there is a distinction between cider and hard cider. That’s because in most cases when Americans say “cider” what they actually mean is unfiltered apple juice, with “hard cider” referring to the drink the rest of the world recognizes as the alcoholic concoction.
Cider has a low alcohol content because apples are low in sugar. Even the sweetest of apples contains far less sugar than grapes. In vats of cider, the yeast eats whatever sugar is available, turning it into alcohol and carbon dioxide. Once all the sugar is gone, the yeast dies off, leaving behind a fermented cider which only contains around 4% to 5% alcohol. Today, some cider makers add another round of sugar and yeast to their concoction, allowing the carbon dioxide to build up and create bubbles inside the bottle.

National Egg Day – June 3, 2021
National Egg Day on June 3 finds eggs finally breaking out of their shell.

But after a revision of the American Heart Association’s guidelines in 2000, the health benefits of eggs seemed to outweigh the concerns. The AHA says healthy adults can enjoy an egg per day and easily remain within the daily cholesterol limit.

Eggs are great to eat anytime … or any day, for that matter. And there's a computer game about eggs: Speedy Eggbert (sadly not available for Windows 10 that I'm aware). It's one of those games where you try to get your character (in this case a cute, but impatient, yellow egg who will sigh and tap his foot if you take too long in deciding what to do and panic if you try to maneuver him too close to an edge or bomb) through a maze from start to finish. The object is to gather up treasure chests, extra lives, and avoid being blown up by bombs, eaten by sharks, drowning, attacked by bluebirds, sawed in half, killed by a fan, run over by a bulldozer, trapped in glue, falling into lava, spikes, trapped by boxes that can't be moved, or just falling too far and dying. Helpful ways to get past some of these are a helicopter and skateboard. There are numerous "worlds" to get through, and some of them are absolutely brutal. I found I couldn't get through the space level because it's deliberately designed so you have to make your egg jump from platform to platform and you can't actually see the entire level to know if it's safe. If you don't want to use the default name "Speedy" for your egg you can call him something else. My egg's name was Egglebert Humperdinck, after the singer. Egglebert wasn't much for singing, though he didn't seem to mind if I listened to an ABBA documentary on TV while playing the game.
