The beginning of the Lenten period, known as Green Monday in Cyprus, falls on the first Monday of Lent each year.
The day marks the beginning of the religious season. Christians in Cyprus and Greece celebrate the day by eating special fasting food, visiting the countryside, and flying kites. It is a day that beckons Christians to start the season with a clean heart that harbors no malice against anyone.
The day is celebrated with picnics, prayers, and fasting as a beginning of the auspicious period of Lent.
HISTORY OF CYPRUS GREEN MONDAY
According to the Orthodox Church, the end of Carnival marks the beginning of the religious season of Lent. Green Monday in Cyprus signals the beginning of the Lent period. In Greece, the day is called Clean Monday. The holiday starts the countdown for Easter Sunday, which is celebrated precisely 40 days after the Day. According to Christian mythology, Jesus fasted for 40 days in a desert, which led to the observance of the tradition of fasting during Lent.
Christians begin their fasts from Green Monday. It is widely believed that Christians should step into the holy season with purity in their hearts, and honesty in their intentions. Cyprus Green Monday kicks off the pious season of Lent by beckoning Christians to purify their souls, hearts, and minds by sacrificing their desires for food. Accordingly, on Cyprus Green Monday, Christians are supposed to fast from midnight to noon apart from abstaining from wine, meat, eggs, and dairy products.
Devout Christians also dedicate a significant part of the day to reading the Bible. Traditional food eaten on Cyprus Green Monday includes olives, octopus, and shrimp. A unique type of unleavened bread called ‘lagana’ is prepared and baked only on Clean Monday. The bread has an ancient history, dating back to the Old Testament. According to religious belief, it featured God’s help to the Israeli people when He guided them from Egypt to their promised land. Since the day also heralds the advent of spring, people in Cyprus and Greece take off for  outings, picnics, and camps to the countryside, where they avidly fly kites.

National Heroes and Benefactors Day – March 7, 2022~Belilze
National Heroes and Benefactors Day is celebrated on March 9, but it can be moved to the first Monday following the La Ruta Maya Canoe Race. If it falls on a Monday or Saturday, the holiday will remain on March 9, otherwise, it will move to a Monday. It is a day off for educational institutions and most private businesses. Previously, this day was named after Henry Edward Ernest Victor Bliss, a Portuguese lord. He had given nearly two million Belize dollars, a significant percentage of his riches, to a trust fund established by the colony of British Honduras, now Belize. The fund was later used to help Belizeans by constructing a public library-museum, nursing homes, clinics, and markets. The funds have also been used to upgrade the city’s water supply system. Isn’t that fantastic? A huge  to the baron’s generous charity!
HISTORY OF NATIONAL HEROES AND BENEFACTORS DAY
This day honors Baron Bliss, an Englishman who left a bulk of his fortune to the service of the Belizean people. Henry Edward Ernest Victor Barretts was his birth name. He was later given the title of Fourth Baron Bliss of the former Kingdom of Portugal by an ancestor. He earned sufficient wealth to be able to spend the latter years of his life aboard his yacht, fishing, and sailing in the Caribbean Sea.
While exploring the coastline, he landed on the colony of British Honduras. His visit to Belize was also prompted by an invitation from a friend, Willoughby Bullock, the city’s Attorney General of that time. Bullock had advised that the baron spend his retirement on the island. The city’s beauty and generosity of its citizens delighted Baron Bliss, who honored his friend’s request
Unfortunately, he fell severely ill during this time and his physicians diagnosed him terminally ill. This was when he decided to draft his will and leave a large percentage of his portion for the improvement of Belize. Interestingly, his will had meticulous dos and don’ts. He emphasized clearly that the fund would not be used to build schools, churches, or dance halls unless they were vocational or agricultural.
The money was well spent and the city now has notable institutes such as the Bliss School of Nursing, the In-Transit Lounge at the Belize National Airport, the Belize City Water Supply System, and the Baron Bliss Institute and Promenade.
Soon after the death of Baron Bliss, the Belizean government declared March 9 to be Baron Bliss Day, a national holiday. However, in 2008, the holiday was renamed National Heroes and Benefactors Day to celebrate other notable individuals who also contributed to the growth and progress of the city.

Plant Power Day is celebrated every March 7 to raise awareness about the benefits of sustainable eating and encourage everyone to embrace plant-based diets. Did you know Plant Power Day was launched by Alpro and BOSH!? Plant-based diets have different meanings depending on the individual. A plant-based diet may be entirely vegan — no animal-derived products — consisting mainly of plant foods, or is made up of whole plant foods that are minimally processed. While a plant-based diet has been an option for many people for ages, it’s not until recently that it gained mainstream attention with people embracing it as a lifestyle.
HISTORY OF PLANT POWER DAY
The history of plant-based diets is interwoven with veganism, which is itself derived from vegetarianism. The earliest evidence of vegetarianism appeared in 3300 to 1300 B.C. in the northern and western ancient Indus Valley Civilization. It was a lifestyle mainly practiced by Indian emperors and philosophers, including Chandragupta Maurya, Ashoka, Mahavira, and Acharya Kundakunda. Vegetarianism was also practiced in ancient Greece and Rome by prominent individuals such as Seneca the Younger, Ovid, Plutarch, and Empedocles.
They argued this choice of lifestyle was due to health, the transmigration of souls, and animal welfare and justice. The Arab poet, all-Ma’arri, was one of the earliest known vegans. In the 19th century, vegetarianism became a widely accepted movement in Britain and the United States. Professionals that were self-identified vegetarians raised awareness of the benefits of the vegetarian lifestyle through their works.
That includes the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley in his 1813 book, “A Vindication of Natural Diet,” the physician William Lambe, and Sylvester Graham — he developed the meatless ‘Graham diet’ that was hugely popular in the 1830s in the United States. Several vegetarian communities and societies were established around this time. The United Kingdom Vegetarian Society, established in the 1840s, was one of those societies.
Several members requested for a section of the Vegetarian Society’s newsletter to be dedicated to non-dairy vegetarianism in 1994. When the Vegetarian Society refused the request, the secretary of the Leicester branch, Donald Watson, started a newsletter called “The Vegan News” in November of that year. That led to the establishment of the Vegan Society and the vegan movement — ‘veganism’. The movement received a large following from individuals who eat mainly plant produce and desist animal exploitations.
In 1980, T. Colin Campbell coined the term ‘plant-based diet’. The term refers to a diet that is low fat, high fiber, and consists primarily of vegetables, focusing on health and not ethics. The term has since been used in various works to mean ‘veganism’, ‘vegetarianism’, and ‘semi-vegetarianism’. In 2018, the European company Alpro, and vegan recipe website, BOSH!, established Plant Power Day to encourage people to eat a more vegetable-based diet and plant-based foods.

Sock Monkey Day – March 7, 2022~Canada~United States
Sock Monkey Day is March 7! A stuffed monkey fashioned out of socks in the shape of a monkey is known as a sock monkey. In the United States and Canada, these stuffed toys are a blend of folk art and silliness. Brown and white sock monkeys have exceptionally long limbs, long tails, and vibrant red lips. Additional decoration on the animal’s head and around its neck is possible. The figure has been ingrained in popular culture, appearing in comic books and art pieces.
HISTORY OF SOCK MONKEY DAY
The most likely forerunners who are responsible for the sock monkey date are the Victorians. During that era, the demand for replica stuffed animals spread through Europe to North America and collided with the developing Arts and Crafts movement. As stories of the Scramble for Africa raised the public’s knowledge of exotic animals, crafters started sewing stuffed toys for children. Stuffed monkeys eventually became a regular feature in many American nurseries.
The original sock monkey is thought to have been created from Rockford Red Heel socks during the Depression of the 1930s. Disputing claims suggest that the 1950s is a more accurate guess. Several reports did claim that a woman named Helen Cooke got a patent for sock monkeys in 1953. Too bad we can’t ask the monkeys.
In 1869, John Nelson got a patent for sock knitting machines and founded The Nelson Knitting Company. In 1890, the Red Heel Socks were introduced, and they were mostly worn by factory employees and farmers. A customer is said to have fashioned a Sock Monkey from a pair of Red Heel Socks and forwarded it to Nelson Knitting Mills in the 1930s.
Being big admirers of the stuffed toys, the mill began providing Sock Monkey guides with pairs of Red Heel Socks on sale. For the following few decades, the Red Heel Sock Monkey was quite popular in the United States.
Sock monkeys have become one of the most popular gifts for a variety of important events, including anniversaries, birthdays, and graduations. Depictions have since appeared in photographs, literature, greeting cards, films, and other media.

The irresistibility of a peanut cluster is all due to the ignition of dynamic sensory contrast in our taste buds. The contrasting flavor of sweet and salty, topped with the altering textures of soft chocolate and crunchy peanuts, lights up a Christmas tree in our brain’s pleasure centers. National Oregon Day is celebrated on March 8 every year. This day celebrates the State of Oregon, which is also known as the Beaver State. Part of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, Oregon has been home to many Native American people for thousands of years.

National Oregon Day celebrates the 33rd state of the United States of America. The day celebrates the history, nature, and people of Oregon, all of which are incredibly diverse. Oregon has been inhabited for over 15,000 years. Evidence of settlements have been found along the Columbia River, and by the 1500s, there were a number of Native American groups that had settled in the area.
Exploration led to discovering and making note of the land and its people as early as the 16th century. Over the 1700s and 1800s, the European powers fought over possession of the land until the state of Oregon was formed and became part of the United States of America.
The first Europeans in Oregon were probably of Spanish descent, and in fact, the name Oregon itself is likely of Spanish origin. During the 1700s and 1800s other Europeans like the French Canadians and Scots arrived, and some even began to settle down on the land. French Canadians have left a lasting impression on the state, with many names of places like Malheur River and Grande Ronde being of French origin.
Slavery has been a major part of Oregon’s history and statehood, with the debates raging over whether the state was to be considered a free state or not. Oregon banned slavery within its borders but required all Black Americans to leave the state. This exclusionary practice was upheld with strict punishment and a big part of the debate to determine Oregon statehood. Eventually, when Oregon was admitted as the 33rd State of the United States, it was admitted as a free state.

Be Nasty Day is celebrated every year on March 8. A fun, light-hearted holiday, this day isn’t meant to be taken seriously at all. Be Nasty Day is a great tongue-in-cheek way to celebrate being a little less polite.
Sometimes, society takes the idea of politeness too far. Terrible people like to take advantage of the social expectation for politeness and use it for their own means. So if you’re the kind of person who is too polite, use this day as an excuse to break away and say “no” when you want to.

At times we have to be nasty, so we can maintain our boundaries with people, no matter where or who they are. From , friends, and even workplaces, sometimes people don’t get the hint. Moreover, being nice seems to encourage people to argue, even if you’re saying no to something. A lot of people think that saying no politely is an invitation for them to convince you otherwise. In these cases, it’s not only important but necessary to be nasty so that you won’t be harassed.
The word ‘nasty’ has also taken a completely different connotation since Hillary Clinton was called that by her political opponent. Ever since, the word has become a feminist rallying cry, with women all over the world encouraged to be nasty to hold on to their rights and fight for what they believe in.
The Nasty Woman has become part of memes, art and performing arts, books and magazines, and other popular culture. The Nasty woman Project took off, becoming an important part of the feminist movement, and working towards achieving gender equality. As the movement states, sometimes being nasty is what it takes to do what you need to do, and stand up for what you believe in, because there’s no other way to make people listen.

International Women's Day – March 8, 2022~International
International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the historical, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also observed in support of taking action against gender inequality around the world. We all know the world couldn’t run without women (we mean, just listen to Beyoncé). This is the day to appreciate their efforts! Organizations large and small come together to show women just how valuable they are in today’s society.
WHEN IS INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY 2022?
International Women’s Day is on March 8. The achievements of women and how far they have come in the fight for their rights within the political, cultural, and social spheres are celebrated.
HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY
Susan B. Anthony was a political activist and an advocate of women’s rights. After the Civil War, she fought for the 14th Amendment that was meant to grant all naturalized and native-born Americans citizenship in the hope that it would include suffrage rights. Although the 14th Amendment was ratified in 1868, it still didn’t secure their vote. In 1869, the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA) was founded by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony to continue the fight for women’s rights.
In the early 1900s, women were experiencing pay inequality, a lack of voting rights, and they were being overworked. In response to all of this, 15,000 women marched through New York City in 1908 to demand their rights. In 1909, the first National Women’s Day was observed in accordance with a declaration by the Socialist Party of America. This was celebrated on the last Sunday of February until 1913.
An International Women’s Conference was organized in August 1910 by Clara Zetkin, a German suffragist and leader in the Women’s Office. Zetkin proposed a special Women’s Day to be organized annually and International Women’s Day was honored the following year in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland, with more than one million attending the rallies. On August 18, 1920, the 19th Amendment was ratified and white women were granted the right to vote in the U.S.
The liberation movement took place in the 1960s and the effort led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act, allowing all women the right to vote. When the internet became more commonplace, feminism and the fight against gender inequality experienced a resurgence. Now we celebrate International Women’s Day each year as we push continuously with the hope of creating a completely equal society.

Commonwealth Day, this year on March 8, is an annual moveable holiday that falls regularly on the second Monday in March. The day is marked with a service attended by the British royal at Westminster Abbey, and much celebration occurs globally in Commonwealth states! The historic event is a public holiday in some of its states and honors the history of the group. It promotes a peaceful global environment and hopes to inspire the Commonwealth states for their future with a yearly address by Queen Elizabeth.
HISTORY OF COMMONWEALTH DAY
Though Commonwealth Day today is a well-established holiday celebrated by an estimated 2 billion people worldwide, it wasn’t always called Commonwealth Day, and it had a smaller start. It was originally known as “Empire Day,” which was established in 1902 to honor Queen Victoria. After Queen Victoria died the year before, the idea was put forth to establish a holiday that honored England, the unity between nations of the Commonwealth, and its ideals of freedom, tolerance, and justice.
Empire Day actually wasn’t officially recognized until 1916, after having been celebrated unofficially in Canada for 14 years. It took another 10 years for it to truly reach a level of popularity – in 1925, an Empire Day Thanksgiving celebration at Wembley Stadium drew around 90,000 in attendance.
In 1958, the then-Prime Minister, Harold MacMillan, rebranded Empire Day as Commonwealth Day. This is because all of the Commonwealth shares history, legal systems, culture, and more. In 1973, the Royal Commonwealth Society proposed the day be changed, and the second Monday in March was selected by the Commonwealth Secretariat as the observance day.
In today’s postcolonial world, there is much debate over the morality of the Commonwealth. While some countries still find it an important and honorable piece of history, and others even still identify the Queen of England as their monarch, more and more discourse is emerging on whether or not it is a problematic holiday. Many countries in the Commonwealth were, at one time or another, prevented from gaining independence, and some find it a reminder of brutal colonization.
Nonetheless, Commonwealth Day is still celebrated by many countries with much fervor. Several countries in the Commonwealth – though notably not Britain – celebrate Commonwealth Day as a public holiday. Parties and other festivities are held, good food is cooked, and flags are raised. Many tune in on Commonwealth Day to watch the service at Westminster Abbey, hear the Queen’s address and feel a great sense of pride in the historic alliance that is the Commonwealth.

National No Smoking Day – March 9, 2022~World
National No Smoking Day, held every second Wednesday of March, will be March 9, 2022. The day is designed as a time to reach out to friends or members who suffer from nicotine addiction. Research shows the number of people around the world who still smoke cigarettes — and are not actively trying to quit — is severely dwindling. The stigma surrounding smoking and the dangers of first-hand and second-hand smoke tend to get more severe as time goes on. But on National No Smoking Day, many are encouraged to help others quit.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL NO SMOKING DAY
National No Smoking Day originated in the Republic of Ireland in 1984 on Ash Wednesday, when the ruling clergy determined that cigarettes would be a good thing for people to give up for Lent. Between then and now, the day of the holiday has been shifted to a more predictable second Wednesday of March.
Medical reports linking smoking to cancer first appeared in the 1920s. During the 1950s and 1960s, extensive research confirmed tobacco could cause a range of serious diseases. Smoking then became less popular due to a rapid increase in knowledge of the health effects of both active and passive smoking.
Now, the National No Smoking campaign is organized by the British Heart Foundation, whose members come up with a marketing phrase every year. For example, in 2010, the motto was, “Break free!” Television ads that year showed smokers breaking cigarettes instead of smoking them.
Historically, many heavy smokers populated the Republic of Ireland, but in recent years the numbers steadily declined. According to the annual Healthy Ireland Survey, 80,000 people stopped smoking over the preceding three years.
The World Health Organization states tobacco kills up to half of its users, with more than 8 million people dying each year. More than 7 million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use, while around 1.2 million deaths are the result of exposure to second-hand smoke. Despite the statistics, government warnings, labels, age and location restrictions helped create a positive effect on the decline of smoking.

National Get Over It Day – March 9, 2022~Other
On National Get Over It Day, on March 9, people everywhere are encouraged to self-reflect and move on from whatever it is that’s weighing on them. Created by Jeff Goldblatt — an entrepreneur who was having trouble getting over an ex-girlfriend, the day has its roots in failed romance — something that’s very challenging to get over! Realizing his pain was relatable, Goldblatt made a website and posted a poem. The rest, as they say, is history (the relationship included). Today, let’s take some time to self-reflect, figure out what’s weighing us down, and decide that the past should live in the past. Let’s get started and get over it!
HISTORY OF NATIONAL GET OVER IT DAY
National Get Over It Day starts with one guy going through a breakup — what’s more relatable than that? Atlanta native entrepreneur Jeff Goldblatt strategically positioned the new holiday between Valentine’s Day and April Fools after he realized so many people would relate to the difficulty he was having getting over his breakup.
To get the ball rolling, Jeff started a webpage and wrote the poem that truly started the holiday. It’s called “The GetOverItDay.com Purpose & Perspective Poem,” and you can go read it, listen to it, or watch it on YouTube, today!
A plethora of books, movies, and songs dedicated to getting over it have been made. Ok Go’s song, ‘Get Over It’ was released in 2002, as was Avril Lavinge’s ‘Get Over It.’ ‘I’m Movin On’ by Rascal Flatts, ‘Shoutout to my Ex’ by Little Mix, and ‘DONE’ by The Band Perry are also centered around moving on and getting over an ex.
Besides music, movies about breakups have been both blockbusters and important mediums for the heartbroken to find their peace and get over their breakups. Some of the most popular movies are “How Stella Got Her Groove Back” (1998), “Bridget Jones’s Diary” (2001), and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” (2004). Self-help sections in libraries and bookstores are positively jam-packed with breakup advice and books to help get over life’s stumbles and failings. Some popular titles include “Get Over It: Thought Therapy for Healing the Hard Stuff” by Iyanla Vanzant, and “Getting Past Your Breakup” by Susan G. Elliott.
After his poem went viral, Jeff added more to his website, including Get Over It Day merchandise and an audio clip telling whoever’s listening to get over it. Today, anyone can go to his website and pick up some jelly bracelets that read “it could always be worse,” then email info@getoveritday.com about exactly what they’re getting over and, once it reaches the other side, it will be printed out and shredded!
