National Learn About Butterflies Day is on March 14, another day to celebrate and learn about one of the most beautiful and colorful creatures in the world — butterflies! Butterflies are important creatures because they help to pollinate flowers. But, more than that, they are pleasing to the eyes, and we love seeing them around us.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL LEARN ABOUT BUTTERFLIES DAY
Butterflies are flying insects with wide, delicate wings. Their colorful wings and body make them popular amongst everyone, including adults and children who chase and play with them. A butterfly’s life cycle or metamorphosis is very interesting as they transition through four phases to become the beauty we all see and love.
A butterfly starts as an egg. The egg hatches within three to seven days into larva, depending on the species of butterfly. The larva or caterpillar feeds on leaves or flowers, losing its skin several times as it grows; the process is called molting. The larva grows steadily over several weeks till it is several times the original size and then turns into a Pupa. Many of these Pupas are suspended under a branch, hidden in leaves, or buried underground, and they become parts of the adult butterfly when they finally break free within 10 to 15 days.
Historically, scientists in their study of evolution believe that butterflies evolved from moths during the Cretaceous period some 40 million to 135 million years back, and they have gone through several evolutions over the millennia to become the butterflies we see today.
National Learn about Butterfly Day is an initiative to sensitize and educate everyone, young and old, about butterflies and their importance to the ecosystem. More than their beauty, a teeming population of butterflies signifies a thriving ecosystem due to their role as predator and prey.

International Day of Action For Rivers – March 14, 2022~International
International Day of Action For Rivers, observed on March 14 every year, is a day that is dedicated to saving, celebrating, and creating awareness about the importance of rivers. Did you know that two million tons of sewage, industrial and agricultural waste are discharged into the world’s water every day? Yes, it is the equivalent of the weight of the entire human population of 6.8 billion people! This is why it is our time to save our rivers for the good of humanity.
HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL DAY OF ACTION FOR RIVERS
The International Day of Action For Rivers is a day created by the International Day of Rivers to sensitize people about the importance of rivers. It brings people across the world together to talk about and save rivers by addressing the issues related to river management, river pollution, river conservation, etc.
The history of the origin of the International Day of Action For Rivers is an interesting one. In September 1995, several organizations, including International Rivers Network (I.R.N.), India’s Save the Narmada Movement (N.B.A.), Chile’s Biobio Action Group (GABB), and European Rivers Network (ERN) came together and conducted a preparatory meeting in Brazil. As a result, they formed an international Organizing Committee headed by Brazil’s Movement of People Affected by Large Dams (MAB).
In March 1997, in Curitiba, Brazil, participants of the First International Meeting of People Affected by Dams adopted the International Day of Action Against Dams and For Rivers, Water and Life. Furthermore, they decided that the International Day of Action For Rivers will take place on March 14.
Every year there will be a theme for the International Day of Action For Rivers, and last year, in 2021, the theme was ‘Rights of Rivers.’ It demanded that rivers be declared a national asset and given legal rights to stop the rivers from becoming dumping sites for waste and sewages.
Environment enthusiasts conduct workshops, seminars, and activities to celebrate this day to raise awareness and spread the message. So, let’s take a stand against the activities that harm the rivers and protect them at all costs.

Did you know that March 14 is already celebrated in many countries as Pi Day? Yes, it is because this date is written as 3/14, and the mathematical constant Pi is approximately 3.14! So, this day is all about mathematics!
HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL DAY OF MATHEMATICS
The International Day of Mathematics is a global event that celebrates mathematics! It aims to educate people about the essential role of mathematics in science and technology, improve quality of life, empower women and girls, and contribute to sustainable development. This is a relatively new event that was created just a couple of years back.
The proclamation of March 14 as the International Day of Mathematics was adopted in the 205th session of the UNESCO’s Executive Council. The day was then adopted in the 40th session of the General Conference of UNESCO in November 2019. Later in 2020, the world celebrated its First International Day of Mathematics on March 14, 2020, with the theme ‘Mathematics is Everywhere.’
The major goals of the International Day of Mathematics is to improve understanding among the general public of the importance of mathematics in education, raise awareness of the role of math's in modern society, science, and disaster management; increase access to information about mathematics, increase international networking, and collaborations in public awareness of mathematics and more.
Each year, there is a new theme for the celebration of the International Day of Mathematics. Last year in 2021, the theme for this day was ‘Mathematics for a better world.’

Eight Hours Day – March 14, 2022~Australia
Eight Hours Day in Australia is celebrated on the second Monday in March in some parts of Australia. It is another name for Labour Day, which is celebrated on different days across the world to honor all the working people who have collectively stood up for their rights.
Eight Hours Day is a commemoration of the Australian Labour Movement, which began in the 1800s and included unions as well as political groups. It was instigated by the skilled tradesmen who refused to work long hours and demanded an eight-hour workday. They protested till their employers came to the negotiation table and achieved their goals.
HISTORY OF EIGHT HOURS DAY
Eight Hours Day in Australia is celebrated in parts of Australia like Victoria, Tasmania, and Western Australia. It is a celebration of the victory of the stonemasons who demanded limited work hours and refused to work till the workday was limited to eight hours.
The eight-hour day movement or 40-hour week movement was a social movement to regulate the length of a working day, regulating the workweek and preventing abuse of workers by their employers. In Australia, the British established penal colonies where people were forced into indentured servitude. At the time, trade unions were illegal, and even with growing changes, people who looked for better work or left their jobs without permission could be hunted down.
When the Australian gold rush began, many skilled tradesmen came to work in Australia. A lot of them had been active in the Chartism movement that campaigned for people’s rights. These tradesmen worked with the people of Australia and began to demand better working conditions, as well as limited workdays.
Workers in different companies and industries began to protest and win eight-hour workdays for themselves across Australia. Then, in Sydney, the Stonemasons Society issued a six-month ultimatum to employers to reduce work hours to eight-hour days. This set off a chain of protests across industries and craft unions throughout Sydney and New South Wales. The movement crept into Melbourne, led by veteran Chartists.
A great deal of campaigning was necessary to extend the eight-hour day to all workers in Australia, and eventually, the Eight Hours Act was passed in Victoria, guaranteeing all workers the right to an eight-hour workday in the state

Commonwealth Day in Canada – March 14, 2022~Canada
Commonwealth Day in Canada is celebrated on the second Monday of March. The aim is to renew the vows of international cooperation, Commonwealth solidarity, and to address the global issues of the more than two billion people that constitute the nations of former British colonies. First observed as Empire Day, the day was later renamed Commonwealth Day. Canada, still a constitutional monarchy, celebrates Commonwealth Day with great enthusiasm. The Royal Union Flag is hoisted at federal establishments, and families gather to hear the message of unity and intercontinental solidarity from the Queen.
HISTORY OF COMMONWEALTH DAY IN CANADA
The British expansion into Canada was unlike any of their endeavors at the time. To counter the growing French Empire, the British army laid siege to the Great White North — and continued to fight the French expansion for 200 years. As the Empire faced a staunch reckoning from the south, it solidified its roots in the Canadian provinces. After a resounding victory over the French in 1759, the British Empire was primed to blossom in the country, but America’s brewing rebellion was soon noticed by Canadian subjects. The ill-thought, expensive, and burdensome expansion into Canada soon met its final glory, as England granted independence to Canada in 1867.
It is said that the sun never sets on the British Empire, except, it did — 65 times. Out of all the countries emancipated from British rule, 54 have now joined the Commonwealth to express cooperation with the former colonies. The goal of the Commonwealth is to foster international peace and security amongst the members and their neighboring countries.
Canadian author Clementina Trenholme dedicated a day to celebrate the country’s association with the Commonwealth as Empire Day in May 1898. It wasn’t until 1958 that the day got its current name. In 1973, with an official recommendation from the Royal Commonwealth Society of Canada, the observation was moved to the second Monday of March.
Tides have turned against the relics of colonization. The Empire, which once represented prosperity and grandeur, now faces a reckoning from within. As 21st-century Canadians come together to observe Commonwealth Day, they want to send a message of reconciliation, rather than celebration.

Canberra Day – March 14, 2022~Australia
Canberra Day is celebrated on the second Monday of March in honor of its official naming on March 12, 1913. It is a public holiday enjoyed by people from the stretches of the Australian Capital Territory all the way to Jervis Bay Territory. The city is engaged in a two-week-long celebration, preceding the founding day. Many events related to the day, including an award ceremony, a hot air balloon carnival, and fundraisers are held throughout the month.
HISTORY OF CANBERRA DAY
Canberra is the largest inland city of Australia and the seat of the government. Many distant features like planned townships, an open skyline, mountain cover, and year-round pleasant weather make it stand apart from the rest of the country.
The plains and valleys of Canberra have been home to Indigenous people for over 21,000 years. Canberra’s etymology traces to the word ‘Kamberri’, used by the inhabitants before the Europeans discovered the mainland.
In the initial decades of colonization, little emphasis was laid on the landlocked area of the territory. The Europeans continued to establish their strongholds throughout the 19th century, driving the majority of indigenous people out of the city. The city garnered national prominence after the efforts of notable settlers such as the Murray and Gibbes families.
Canberra’s designation as the capital of Australia was finalized after much contention, as the cities of Sydney and Melbourne appeared to be more developed and poised to host the seat of the government. But, it was the constitutional commandment of section 125, stating that the capital must be in the state of New South Wales that settled the issue. Eagerly, parliament passed the Seat of Government Act in 1908, changing the course of Canberra’s history.
On March 12, 1913, Lady Gertrude Mary Denman, wife of then Governor-General Lord Denman, announced the official name of the city with the proclamation, “I name the capital of Australia, Canberra.” Ever since then, the third Monday of March is observed in the celebration of the great city of Canberra. The day was moved from the third Monday of March to the second in 2007 to have it fall closer to its original date, March 12.

HISTORY OF CONSTITUTION DAY IN ANDORRA
Constitution Day in Andorra commemorates the Principality of Andorra each year. This small country with a population of less than 100,000 is located in the high mountains of the Pyrenees between France and Spain. The history of Constitution Day (Andorra) is an interesting one.
It all started a few hundred years ago in 803 A.D. when Charlemagne created a small nation as a mere buffer region just to frustrate the advance of Islamic Moors into France. Charlemagne’s son, Louis I, the Pious, decided to give the citizens in that nation a charter of liberties to resist the Islamic Moors effectively.
Then later in the 13th century, Andorra became a co-principality as it was ruled jointly by two princes — the leader of France and the Spanish Bishop of Urgell. By 1993, the country realized that it needed to refresh and renew its laws and refresh the laws and constitution. This was in an attempt to join the United Nations and Council of Europe.
As a result, the new constitution was approved by the people of Andorra. A month later, on March 14, 1993, the first constitution of Andorra, the supreme law of the principality, was approved by 74.2% of voters in a referendum. It has 107 articles that make all people equal before the law.
Over the years, Andorra has grown significantly with better communication tools and transportation systems due to an increase in tourism. On Constitution Day, all businesses in Andorra are closed and enjoy a holiday to celebrate this significant day.

National Napping Day – March 14, 2022~U.S.
Ever feel jet-lagged after daylight savings? March 14 is National Napping Day and it’s the perfect day to help you recuperate from the “spring forward.” Don’t doze off as I tell you this, I promise this won’t be a snooze fest! Napping is actually scientifically proven to be better for you than coffee or energy drinks. So now you can feel less guilty about enjoying this not so guilty pleasure. You may have lost that extra hour in the day but you can feel like you caught up on some sleep by celebrating the day in style.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL NAPPING DAY
National Napping Day was created in 1999 by a Boston University professor and his wife. William Anthony Ph.D. and his wife Camille Anthony created this holiday to spread awareness on the importance of getting enough sleep and its benefits. The holiday was meant to help make up for the amount of sleep lost when the hour changes. The date was chosen because studies have shown that people are already at their most tired and sleep deprived after daylight savings changes. The change of the hour really makes a difference, but National Napping Day can make you feel like there was no change at all.
However, even though the holiday wasn’t created until 1999, the Spanish already had the tradition of taking an afternoon “siesta.” That’s good news for Spain, since daylight savings won’t affect the routine of the people there too much. The Ancient Romans were known to take midday naps as well. With the hustle and bustle of modern life midday naps seem more like a thing from the past to most people. Naps are seen as luxuries now, a symbol of extra time most of us can’t afford. But back then naps were seen as a necessity and were sometimes used for medicinal purposes and even religious practices. Even though National Napping Day was created 21 years ago, it still doesn’t have actual recognition as an official national holiday. Although National Napping Day isn’t technically a real holiday, who doesn’t love a reason to nap?

National Shoe The World Day – March 15, 2022~U.S.
We celebrate National Shoe The World Day every year on March 15. The day sheds light on the importance of footwear and the need for quality footwear for millions of people worldwide who can’t afford or don’t have access to it. Did you know that nearly one billion people on Earth don’t have shoes, or their footwear is inadequate? Despite difficult terrains and climates, these people walk barefoot or with poor-quality footwear. The good news is that we can all do something about it by donating, sponsoring, or gifting shoes to those who don’t have them.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL SHOE THE WORLD DAY
Food, shelter, and clothes are the basic needs of every human in this world. However, one such necessity that millions of people worldwide struggle to get is good quality footwear. From walking barefoot on hard, warm surfaces to walking in slippery, muddy jungles, many people don’t have access to footwear.
Walking without protection or barefoot can even lead to a lifetime of problems, including pain, injury, cuts, sores, infections, parasites, etc.. Moreover, apart from the health issues, people can get banned from schools and other business places for not wearing them, and this issue is exactly what National Shoe The World Day addresses. We might be blessed to have several pairs of shoes in our closets, but few are lucky enough to have one pair of shoes even though they are much too big for them.
National Shoe The World Day was created by the United Indigenous People in Fontana, California, inspired by Donald Zsemonadi in March 2014. Since then, people worldwide have participated in this event and helped ‘shoe’ those struggling without good quality or no footwear. For some of us, shoes might not be such a big thing to talk about and celebrate, but good shoes are still a dream for some in underdeveloped communities. So, let’s raise awareness about the importance of good shoes and act to help those in need.

World Social Work Day is observed every year on the third Tuesday in March. The day recognizes the hard work and diligence of social workers. On this day, a global organization of social workers advocates for social justice, human rights, and social development while promoting the best practices in social work. Social workers serve many roles in our communities. They assess their client’s and community’s needs and challenges. As advocates, they speak for their clients, get them access to the resources they need to improve their lives, and educate people about what to do in a crisis. Social workers also respond to crises.
HISTORY OF WORLD SOCIAL WORK DAY
The International Federation of Social Workers (I.F.S.W.) promotes World Social Work Day. Since 1983, the Federation, an international, non-governmental organization of social workers, has teamed up with other organizations to assist international cooperation and recognize the accomplishments and contributions of social workers globally. Each year, the organization focuses on a theme. Over the years, some of the themes have been ‘I Am Because We Are – Strengthening Social Solidarity and Global Connectedness’ (2021), ‘Promoting the Importance of Human Relationships’ (2020), ‘Promoting Community and Environmental Sustainability’ (2017), and ‘Promoting the Dignity and Worth of Peoples’ (2015).

The history of this day is an interesting one. Consumers International created and organizes World Consumer Rights Day annually. Consumers International is a global federation of consumer organizations founded in 1960, and the organization was founded as an independent and influential voice for consumers.
World Consumer Rights Day has been celebrated since 1983, and the date of March 15 honors the speech made by U.S. President John Fitzgerald Kennedy to the U.S. Congress on March 15, 1962. In this speech, he coined the four fundamental consumer rights — the right to safety, the right to be informed, the right to choose, and the right to be heard.
Since then, World Consumer Rights Day has grown in popularity and is celebrated every year with a specific theme. Beware the Ides of March, or at least, be aware of when “the Ides” even takes place (March 15). The word “Ides” is derived from the Latin word “idus,” which refers to the middle day of any month in the ancient Roman calendar. The Ides are specifically the fifteenth day of the months of March, May, July, or October, and the thirteenth day of the remaining months. The Ides were the designated days for settling debt each month in the Roman empire and generally included the seven days preceding the Ides for this purpose. No doubt debtors who could not pay their debts considered the Ides to be unlucky days as they were typically thrown into prison or forced into slavery.
WHEN IS IDES OF MARCH 2022?
As the word ‘ides’ refers to the middle of the month, the Ides of March is on March 15. Contrary to popular superstitious belief surrounding its origins, Ides simply marks the first day of the full moon in every month, typically falling between the 13th and 15th.
HISTORY OF IDES OF MARCH
The unlucky pall over the Ides of March has a more portentous tie to ancient Rome. Roman Emperor Julius Caesar was famously unlucky on the Ides of March in 44 B.C. when he was assassinated by his senators, fearing their ruler was becoming a dictator.
Movies often distort historical events to make them more entertaining for the sake of drawing bigger audiences and better reviews. The same was true when English playwright William Shakespeare wrote his famous tragedy “Julius Caesar.”
Much of what we commonly believe to be true about the demise of the unlucky emperor on that fateful Ides of March is based more on Shakespeare’s play than historical evidence, according to author Barry Strauss. His book “The Death of Caesar” dismantles the half-truths about the ruler’s tragic end on the Ides of March in 44 B.C. Here are three myths he calls out about the Ides of March killing of Emperor Julius Caesar:
Myth #1:
Julius Caesar was admonished to “Beware the Ides of March” by an unknown Soothsayer.
False: The omen was actually “Beware the next 30 days” and was prophesied on February 15, 44 B.C. by an Etruscan Soothsayer named Spurinna.
Myth #2:
Brutus was Caesar’s best friend and led the assassination plot.
False: There were in fact three conspirators: Brutus, Cassius, and Decimus. Decimus was known to be most trusted by Caesar and is considered to have been the leader of the murder conspiracy.
Myth #3:
Caesar nobly uttered “Et tu, Brute” (you too, Brutus) with his dying breath.
False: Caesar singling out Brutus as he lay dying was an invention of the Renaissance movement. The emperor was a trained soldier who fought for his life, tried to escape the ambush, and never uttered these words.

International Day Against Police Brutality (I.D.A.P.B.) is a global observance observed every year on March 15 and is a focal day of solidarity against police brutality. The first observation of the day began in 1997. Police brutality refers to the wanton use of excessive force by a police officer. It is one of the most prevalent forms of police misconduct and violence. Police brutality is widespread in many countries, and activists have been working tirelessly in demanding reforms in police conduct. Rallies and awareness programs are also organized to observe the day.
HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST POLICE BRUTALITY

But how do we oppose police violence? There are countless ways to fight against police brutality if people come together and oppose it. In addition to active self-defense, it is important to attract people’s attention to the problem. People use tools such as graffiti, leaflets, stickers, and any other medium of visual agitation. And also, of course, the dissemination of information about brutality (and the fight against it) on the internet.

The best part is, sometimes the facts or news that leave us dumbstruck aren’t even true. However, it doesn’t matter, and there’s nothing to be embarrassed about because it’s Dumbstruck Day!
HISTORY OF DUMBSTRUCK DAY
Though we couldn’t trace the exact origins of this day, we have found information suggesting that the celebrations for Dumbstruck Day have been around since 2010. The term is derived from dumb, as in speechless, and strike. These words have been seen first in texts from the 1570s. By the 1800s, the term had lost its popularity. However, it again regained popularity in books and novels in the 1950s and has been prominent ever since, in novels, comics, and press magazines. A documentary movie named “Dumbstruck” was released in 2010, which revolved around the story of five ventriloquists, their struggles in the world of professional ventriloquism and the emotional attachment developed to their dummies. There are also books titled “DumbStruck,” written by authors like Sara Pennypacker and Steven Connor.
People on this day look for an excuse to be dumbstruck. Sometimes it’s about watching something on the news and getting dumbstruck, or maybe it happens when you watch a movie that leaves you spellbound, a friend that you haven’t met since kindergarten shows up at your door, or your kids get A+ in their exams? There are many reasons to get dumbstruck.

Buzzards Day – March 15, 2022~U.S.
Buzzards Day is celebrated on March 15, and we’re here to tell you how you can celebrate the day in the best possible way. Do you know that it has been more than 64 years since it was noted that the buzzards returned from their migration to the south during winter at the same time every year? Buzzards Day was created to celebrate the return of these wonderful birds from migration every year. It is particularly popular in Ohio, as there is a local history associated with the buzzards.
HISTORY OF BUZZARDS DAY
In 1957, a patrolman for Cleveland Metroparks named Walter Nawalaniec informed Robert Bordner of the Cleveland Press and local historian, Miss Eunice Morton of Richfield, that he had observed that the buzzards returned each year after their migration on the same day every year. Though he knew that the buzzards returned at the same time, he was thrilled to note that they returned on the same calendar date every year. This was also true during a leap year.
That year, it was recorded that almost 9,000 visitors came to see the birds return from their expedition. Since then, every year, Ohio receives thousands of bird lovers who visit to witness the return of the buzzards and, thus, Buzzards Day was created. The Chamber of Commerce decided to welcome these birds in a special way. A traditional American breakfast of sausages and pancakes was made to welcome the birds and Spring’s coming. Since then, Buzzards Day has been celebrated by enjoying pancakes and sausages for breakfast.
Buzzards are marvelous species of birds that have qualities that are not found in other scavengers. For example, buzzards vocalize throughout the year. However, there is a slight difference between the word buzzards used in the U.S. and other countries. In the U.S., when someone says buzzards, they mean turkey vultures which are a part of New World vultures. In other parts of the world, buzzards are a part of the Old World Vultures. In North America, the term refers to hawks or buzzard hawks.

We celebrate World Contact Day on March 15 every year. The day brings all alien life enthusiasts together to attempt to contact extraterrestrial beings. It is fascinating to see how many Unidentified Flying Objects (U.F.O.s) humans have reportedly found on Earth! People claim to see them every minute of the day! But, it is not just about flying objects. There are strange and interesting things such as crop circles, unusual signals, and fossils that show the possibility of life outside earth. So, whether E.T. managed to phone home or not, World Contact Day is a fun day to learn all about alien encounters.
HISTORY OF WORLD CONTACT DAY
World Contact Day has been celebrated for the last 68 years on March 15. It was initiated by The International Flying Saucer Bureau (I.F.S.B.) in 1952 by Albert K. Bender. Later, the founder revealed a strange yet interesting story. Apparently, three men in black visited him at his house, and they communicated with him telepathically. He felt like he was being transported. Bender also reported having a second visit from three floating figures in shadows. They told him they had captured humans from earth to disguise themselves to have a human form on earth for their visits.
In the summer of 1953, Bender made a series of findings revealing the truth about U.F.O. stories, which he planned to publish in October of that year. Later in October, before publishing his discoveries, once again, he reported a visit by three men in black, who threatened him not to publish his findings of extraterrestrial life. In November 1953, he shut down the Bureau with a caution note to alien life enthusiasts.
On this day, in 1953, members of the Bureau were asked to send a peaceful telepathic note to aliens in outer space. The aliens asked for a friendly, peaceful, and mutual relationship with humans on earth and asked them to help ignorant people realize there is extraterrestrial life. In 2013, it was extended for a whole week, with a final attempt to have a massive connection on March 22. Even though the I.F.S.B. no longer exists, E.T. enthusiasts from all over the globe still celebrate World Contact Day.
