International Corgi Day – June 4, 2021
We celebrate International Corgi Day on June 4 every year. The corgi is a dog breed with short legs, a long body, and a huge heart. These dogs’ roots can be traced to Wales where they were bred to herd larger animals. The combination of their short height and agility made them the top contenders for herding animals. Corgis are also known as the ‘dwarf’ dog. The main aim of International Corgi Day is to bring love and attention to this lovable dog breed. A focus is also put on rescuing and rehoming corgis that have been abandoned by their owners.

National Cognac Day – June 4, 2021
National Cognac Day on June 4 invites you to have a laid-back day whilst enjoying one of the finest alcoholic drinks. Cognac, which originates from a town of the same name in France, is a type of brandy that many enjoy due to its distilled and fine taste. The beverage speaks of a splendor-rich atmosphere in which conversations are punctuated with sophisticated and intellectual topics. Like all things magnificent, cognac, too, has specific standardizations that must be met in order for a brandy to even be recognized as cognac in the first place. For example, a true cognac must always come from the vineyards of the six certified regions in France.

National Hug Your Cat Day – June 4, 2021
Ancient Egyptians worshipped, revered, and spoiled their cats (sound familiar?). They were seen as symbols of grace and poise — traits cats are still associated with today. There’s a lot of cat hugging going on all the time, but make an extra special attempt during National Hug Your Cat Day on June 4. The best way to celebrate? Scoop your regal cat right off the ground and snuggle the heck out of it until it feels the love. Sounds like a pleasant activity we can all get behind, no? So grab your kitty BFF and celebrate with us!

National Old Maids Day – June 4, 2021
National Old Maids Day, celebrated on June 4, sheds light on the single and childless women over the usual age for marriage. Initially, the ‘old maid’ was considered derogatory as it was used to mock women who were neither married nor had a child. In the old days, people had strict views of the roles a woman should fulfill in order to shape society and future generations. It is because of such societal expectations that single and childless women faced difficult times. However, as times progressed and situations started changing, the term ‘old maid’ gained a much more positive meaning. Today, the day is celebrated in honor of women who chose to focus on themselves as individuals.

National SAFE Day – June 4, 2021
National SAFE Day on June 4 is a reminder to keep our loved ones safe and sound at all times. One in three households in America owns a firearm. The question that arises here is how many of these households make sure that their firearms are stashed away safely and out of reach of children. Sadly, the resulting child injuries and deaths owing to unsafe firearm placement show that many of these households do not take firearm safety into serious consideration. Every year, on June 4, a safety campaign is held not only to raise awareness about firearm safety but also to remember the many children who met fatal ends due to unsafe firearm storage.

Shopping Cart Day – June 4, 2021
Shopping Cart Day on June 4 calls for a celebration of the baskets on wheels we use to journey through the aisles in a supermarket. The inventor of shopping carts wanted to increase the time customers spent in a supermarket in order to maximize the overall profitability rates by expanding the medium to temporarily carry items in store. The initial designs included baskets and carriage capacity factors. Many other points related to push-pull ease, wheel rotation, and material heaviness also had to be considered. In the starting days, shopping carts did not catch on as many males found the idea too ‘effeminate’ for them, while many females believed the shopping cart would be too similar to pushing a baby carriage.

In the military, D-Day is the day on which a combat attack or operation is to be initiated. The best known D-Day is during World War II, on June 6, 1944—the day of the Normandy landings—initiating the Western Allied effort to liberate western Europe from Nazi Germany. However, many other invasions and operations had a designated D-Day, both before and after that operation. The terms D-Day and H-Hour are used for the day and hour on which a combat attack or operation is to be initiated. They designate the day and hour of the operation when the day and hour have not yet been determined, or where secrecy is essential. For a given operation, the same D-Day and H-Hour apply for all units participating in it. When used in combination with numbers, and plus or minus signs, these terms indicate the point of time following or preceding a specific action, respectively. Thus, H−3 means 3 hours before H-Hour, and D+3 means 3 days after D-Day. (By extension, H+75 minutes is used for H-Hour plus 1 hour and 15 minutes.) Planning papers for large-scale operations are made up in detail long before specific dates are set. Thus, orders are issued for the various steps to be carried out on the D-Day or H-Hour minus or plus a certain number of days, hours, or minutes. At the appropriate time, a subsequent order is issued that states the actual day and times. D-Day for the invasion of Normandy by the Allies was originally set for June 5, 1944, but bad weather and heavy seas caused U.S. Army General Dwight David Eisenhower to delay until June 6 and that date has been popularly referred to ever since by the short title "D-Day". Because of the connotation with the invasion of Normandy, planners of later military operations sometimes avoided the term to prevent confusion. For example, Douglas MacArthur's invasion of Leyte began on "A-Day", and the invasion of Okinawa began on "L-Day". The Allies' proposed invasions of Japan would have begun on "X-Day" (on Kyūshū, scheduled for November 1945) and "Y-Day" (on Honshū, scheduled for March 1946).

National Cancer Survivors Day – June 6, 2021
On the first Sunday in June each year, on June 6 this year, the nonprofit National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation rallies its forces and resources to promote National Cancer Survivors Day in the U.S. and worldwide, as it has done since 1988. The NCSD Foundation bills the holiday as a “celebration of life” where survivors — described as anyone who has a history of the disease, from the point of diagnosis through the remainder of life — gather with friends, families, and supporters to raise awareness, spread information, provide services, and honor other survivors, all to show that life after a cancer diagnosis can be full and fruitful.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL CANCER SURVIVORS DAY The first celebration of National Cancer Survivors Day was held on June 5, 1988. The style of commemoration has always been that of an open network, with local municipalities, hospitals, and other groups all staging such festivities as parades and rallies, individually but concurrently. According to the NCSD website, anyone can register an event and gain the support of the wider organization. The organization offers a range of resources, including a roster of speakers — medical professionals, major and minor celebrities, authors, and more — who are available to help host events in their respective towns and cities.
NCSD celebrations have also included art exhibits, carnivals, contests, and testimonies by high-profile survivors. In 2008, the fanfare included a commencement by U.S. President George W. Bush side-by-side with the director of the National Cancer Institute.
Generally, official coverage of National Cancer Survivors Day is provided by the magazine “Coping with Cancer.” During the 2020 celebration, as the magazine reported, many events were canceled or changed to online-only or socially distanced versions, but the day still included a drive-through ‘red carpet’ celebration in Louisville, Kentucky with vehicles all decked out in pink and red; pink corsets and plumage donned in a parade by the New Orleans Pussyfooters in that city; a virtual Ribbon Walk in Fort Wayne, Indiana; and many more unique instances of coming together in solidarity with survivors.
The process for registering your own NCSD event is easy and streamlined on their web page, ncsd.org, so this coming June, why not join the ranks of survivors and allies in your hometown, in connection with the wider event? Make it a fun and meaningful day.

National Eyewear Day – June 6, 2021
Glasses have gone from a one-time “geek necessity” to a cool “fashion accessory.” National Eyewear Day invites us to celebrate the fact that glasses, besides correcting our vision, can help create a whole new appearance. Honestly, many of us wear non-prescription glasses simply because we like the way they make us look.
The good news? Today we can choose from virtually endless styles, shapes, and colors.
Plus, tech has changed the mechanics of eyewear forever. New “smart” prescription lenses can now automatically switch focus from far to near and back again — thanks to liquid crystal-activated sensors on the frame. National Eyewear Day reminds us to take a moment on June 6 to think about how far we’ve come from old-school trifocals.
As for sunglasses ? They deserve a day of their very own.

National Gardening Exercise Day – June 6, 2021
On National Gardening Exercise Day, June 6, we appreciate the bodybuilding activity that is gardening by picking up our trowels and toiling in our gardens! Not only is it so satisfying to grow your own flowers or herbs from seedling to sprout to a full-grown plant, but it’s also great exercise! Any gardener will tell you that squatting to pick weeds or water a seedling will get those quads burning. Besides, working in the hot sun adds an extra athletic challenge.

National Yo-Yo Day – June 6, 2021
If it seems like yo-yos have been around forever, that’s because they have; we’re talking over 2,000 years! Some believe it all started in ancient Greece, but modern yo-yos likely came from the Philippines. In fact, the word “yo-yo” first appeared in a Filipino dictionary in 1860. But they didn’t become popular stateside until the 1930s. Pedro Flores (of Filipino descent) began mass producing yo-yos in 1928. After holding some promotional competitions, he caught the eye of Donald F. Duncan Sr, who thought these yo-yo things were awesome! Duncan bought Flores out, hired him to run the marketing campaigns, and the rest is National Yo-yo Day history.
Today the Duncan Toy Company is synonymous with this iconic toy. However, it wasn’t Duncan’s or Flores’ idea to hold a National Yo-Yo Day. No, that honor goes to Daniel Volk — a yo-yo pro whose talent helped spread the toy’s popularity. After all, he starred in “The Yo-Yo-Yo Man Instructional Video” alongside the Smothers Brothers.
In order to pay tribute to his employer, Volk founded National Yo-yo Day on what he thought was Duncan’s birthday: June 6. As it turns out, Duncan’s birthday is actually June 8, but hey, it’s the thought that counts. Anyway, National Yo-yo Day has been held on June 6 since 1990, so why stop a good thing? We’re certainly not going to. So, channel your inner child and let’s start celebrating!

Queensland Day – June 6, 2021
Did you know the British could have named Queensland — “Cooksland” — after British explorer James Cook, if Queen Victoria didn’t have her way? Queensland Day celebrates the birthday of the Australian state every year on June 6. It was on this day, in 1859, that Vicky granted the state the right to form its own government.
The day commemorates the struggle against British Rule. It is also an opportunity to celebrate everything that’s great about Queensland, from its many Natural Heritage Sites to the sunny days (which make for great barbecue opportunities).

Russian Language Day – June 6, 2021
UN Russian Language Day coincides with the birthday of Aleksandr Pushkin on June 6, a Russian poet considered the father of modern Russian literature.
Russian is a Slavic language, whose closest relatives are Ukrainian, Belarusian, and Rusyn (Ukraine and Slovenia). In the 19th century, what we now classify as modern Russian was known as “Great Russian.” Belarusian was called “White Russian,” and Ukrainian was “Little Russian.” Today over 170 million people speak Russian.
UNESCO established this day in 2010.

Prince’s Birthday – June 7, 2021
Prince could play it all — rock ‘n roll, R&B, funk, psychedelic rock, and we’re celebrating his artistic contributions on June 7. He was a prolific songwriter and penned some of our most popular contemporary hits, including “Purple Rain,” “1999,” and “Little Red Corvette.” Prince was born in Minneapolis in 1958 and lived there throughout his career. He also wrote, starred in, and created the soundtrack for the hit movie “Purple Rain,” released in 1984. Prince passed away in 2016 due to an accidental overdose of prescription drugs.

National Best Friends Day – June 8, 2021
Whether they’re near or far, old or new, best friends help to carry us through our lives. This June 8, National Best Friends Day, it’s time to tell them how much we appreciate their company. As the Mayo Clinic reports: “Friends help you cope with traumas, such as divorce, serious illness, job loss, or the death of a loved one. They also encourage you to change or avoid unhealthy lifestyle habits, such as excessive drinking or lack of exercise.” Today’s the day to enjoy a little one-on-one time with the people who never fail to catch us when we fall.
