What better way is there to honor Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month than by celebrating National Kids and Pets Day on April 28each year? Born out of a need to raise awareness about picking the right pet for children, this day also celebrates the bond pets and children share and highlights safety tips where our pets and children are concerned.

National Superhero Day – April 28, 2021
Marvel employees created National Superhero Day on April 28, 1995 to celebrate everyone’s favorite superhero. This is for superheroes only — we all know villains aren’t deserving of their own day. Still, the idea behind superhero day is to honor those who serve and protect while fighting evil. No matter who your favorite hero is, honoring the real or fictional people that inspire us is a worthwhile cause this April 28.

It is an ancient festival of spring and a current traditional spring holiday in many European cultures. Dances, singing, and cake are usually part of the festivities. In 1889, May Day was chosen as the date for International Workers' Day by the Socialists and Communists of the Second International to commemorate the Haymarket affair in Chicago. International Workers' Day is also called "May Day", but it is a different celebration from the traditional May Day. |

Kentucky Derby – May 1, 2021
We can’t wait to experience the horse racing and historical traditions during the Kentucky Derby, which is held every first Saturday in May and falls on May 1 this year. On the face of it, the Kentucky Derby is just a horse race, however, it has gained legions of fans over the past 147 years that it has been running! As one of America’s oldest sports, the Kentucky Derby is also known as the ‘Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports’. Spectators wear the most elaborate and unique outfits and indulge in a drink of mint julep. The winners of the race are awarded a trophy and prize money, as well as a huge garland of roses that weighs approximately 40 lbs!

National Mother Goose Day – May 1, 2021
We are swept back to memories of our childhood whenever we hear of National Mother Goose Day on May 1. From Humpty Dumpty’s clumsy fall and the Three Little Pigs’ scramble for houses to Pinnochio’s elongated nose, fairy tales and nursery rhymes endlessly entertained us as kids whilst providing us with important life lessons. Charles Perrault, a French author, is thought to have been the first writer to establish fairy tales as a separate genre in 1695. Fast-forward a little further into the future, the Grimm fairy tales, which were published during the 19th century, have now become quite famous worldwide. Thanks to Disney, the Grimm fairy tales have become more child-friendly but, originally, they were gruesome in their details. For example, in the original version of “Snow White,” her stepmother died after being cursed to dance in glass heels forever.

Star Wars Day – May 4, 2021
The 1977 release of “Star Wars” changed Hollywood forever. Four decades later we’re still enthralled. Just last December, “Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker”, was released in theaters. Following the previous two movies of the sequel trilogy, “The Force Awakens” and “The Last Jedi”, the main Star Wars film franchise has come to a conclusion. So — Happy Star Wars Day this May 4!
It’s party time on Tatooine.
The first organized Star Wars Day took place in Toronto back in 2011. The event included an Original Trilogy Trivia Game Show, a costume contest, and a showing of fan-made tribute films, mash-ups, parodies, and remixes. In late 2012, Disney purchased Lucasfilm and has officially observed the holiday at Disneyland and Walt Disney World ever since.

National Teacher Day – May 4, 2021
National Teacher Day is observed on the first Tuesday of the first full week of May (May 4) and we’re more than ready to show our appreciation to those who have taught us. Everyone has had that favorite teacher that has helped inspire them. This day meant to honor them was actually made by a teacher. None other than First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt herself. Eleanor Roosevelt was more than Franklin D. Roosevelt’s wife, she has a history of civic duty and was an advocate for fellow teachers. Her love for education began at a young age when she was privately tutored and encouraged by her aunt Anna “Barnie” Roosevelt. No matter how high she rose on the social ladder, she never forgot where she came from.

 Cinco de Mayo (pronounced [ˈsiŋko̞ ðe̞ ˈma̠ʝo̞] in Mexico, Spanish for "Fifth of May") is an annual celebration held on May 5. The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican Army's victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza. The victory of the smaller Mexican force against a larger French force was a morale boost for the Mexicans. Zaragoza died months after the battle due to illness. A year after the battle, a larger French force defeated the Mexican army at the Second Battle of Puebla, and Mexico City soon fell to the invaders. More popularly celebrated in the United States than in Mexico, the date has become associated with the celebration of Mexican-American culture. These celebrations began in California, where they have been observed annually since 1863. The day gained nationwide popularity in the 1980s thanks especially to advertising campaigns by beer and wine companies. Today, Cinco de Mayo generates beer sales on par with the Super Bowl. In Mexico, the commemoration of the battle continues to be mostly ceremonial, such as through military parades or battle reenactments. The city of Puebla marks the event with an arts festival, a festival of local cuisine, and re-enactments of the battle. Cinco de Mayo is sometimes mistaken for Mexico's Independence Day—the most important national holiday in Mexico—which is celebrated on September 16, commemorating the Cry of Dolores, which, in 1810, initiated the war of Mexican independence from Spain. National No Pants Day – May 7, 2021
National No Pants Day is on the first Friday in May, on May 7 this year, and we know just how freeing it can be to change out of your pants after a long day. Can you believe that the oldest pair of pants ever discovered by archeologists are wool ones in western China that date back more than 3,000 years ago? While these pants were typically worn during horseback riding, over the years, pants have changed in purpose and material. From equestrian to labor and fashion purposes, to wool and denim materials, distressed jeans are in fashion, and every person has more than one pair.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL NO PANTS DAY
The first instance of National No Pants Day is said to have started in Austin, Texas, during the 1980s. A club at the University of Texas named the Knighthood of Buh wanted to celebrate freedom from conforming to society and the end of the semester. After finishing their finals, they pulled their pants down and walked around in their undergarments. Although this began as a college prank, this tradition continued until 2000 when states throughout the United States and in other countries such as Canada, Britain, and Australia, started catching onto this day and wanted to participate in it as well.
Another story of how this day first started was about a man in the 1980s who asked his wife if she could iron his work pants for an important meeting. While he was concerned about being late to work, too much time had already passed, and he rushed out the door, forgetting to put his pants back on. When he finally realized he was pantless, he was already on the subway. Since there wasn’t anything he could do about it, he pretended as if nothing was out of the ordinary and feigned a smile.
Similar to National No Pants Day, there is a No Pants Subway Ride Day that was started in 2002 by Improv Everywhere, a comedy organization. In January of that year, a group of seven rode the subway wearing oversized coats and their undergarments. They did this as a prank to see how other subway riders would react to them being pantless in January weather. Since 2002, this day is celebrated and has spread to other countries, with the specific date announced by Improv Everywhere.

National Provider Appreciation Day is on the Friday before Mother’s Day, May 7 this year. Childcare workers are celebrated on this day, including teachers, nannies, and caregivers, all of who are essential workers in helping working parents continue to provide for their families. The day focuses on building awareness of the holiday, thanking childcare workers, and showcasing their contributions to their communities. National Space Day – May 7, 2021
We celebrate National Space Day on the first Friday in May, or on May 7 this year. It was created to inspire all of us in the pursuit of knowledge and progress. There’s so much going on in the universe, it definitely deserves a day to reflect on everything! Though it’s unlikely you’ll be able to celebrate in outer space, you can still take part in your own corner of the universe with our gravity-defying facts, figures, and ideas for getting involved this National Space Day.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL SPACE DAY
We could say that National Space Day’s history starts at the beginning of the universe itself, when an intense pressure and temperature resulted in the Big Bang, exploding the universe and everything in it into existence.
Ever since, the curious-minded have been fascinated with space and its state of feeling so near and yet so far. Whilst early cultures identified things in the sky as gods or spirits, it was the ancient Greeks who developed the study of planets and stars into something resembling the astronomy we know today. Although the heliocentric system was first suggested by the ancient Greeks, the theory wasn’t developed and published until 1543 when Copernicus outlined his ideas about the planets revolving around the sun.
Astronomy was further advanced by Galileo Galilei in the 17th century, who has often been referred to as ‘the father of astronomy’ due to his avid pursuit of it against the wishes of his patrons, colleagues, and even the Pope. He invented important apparatus for observing space and proving his theories, although he spent much of his life under house arrest for his work.
Centuries later, space continued to be a contentious issue when the space race began between Cold War rivals, America and Russia. The two countries competed to be the first to achieve space flight and eventually put a man on the moon. The victory was America’s, when Apollo 11 and its team of astronauts landed on the moon on July 16, 1969.
In 1997, the Lockheed Martin Corporation introduced National Space Day as a one-off event, and it was later expanded to International Space Day in 2001, due to its extreme popularity, by former astronaut and senator John Glenn.

National Have a Coke Day – May 8, 2021
If the very thought of National Have a Coke Day on May 8 makes you want to break into song, you’re not alone. Recorded countless times since it was written in 1971, the song “I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing (In Perfect Harmony)” accompanied the brilliant hilltop coke commercial with the words “I’d like to buy the world a Coke” and “It’s the real thing” added to make it a haunting and enduring synthesis of coke, peace and harmony that resonated in the “flower power” era and is still sung today.
Begun more than 125 years ago as a cocaine-fueled medicinal elixir, Coke eventually morphed into the non-narcotic soda of choice for the baby-boomers who came of age in the 60s. As the company grew it added other flavors and varieties of the original coke. Today the Coca-Cola Company continues to be relevant as the largest soft drink company in the world, expanding its uniquely American taste into the world’s largest emerging markets to become a global brand. That’s called “commercial diplomacy.” So, when you start to hum and eventually sing the words you remember from Coke’s 1971 hit song, know that people around the world are singing it along with you, but in their own language.

World Migratory Bird Day – May 8, 2021
Time to un-ruffle your feathers because May 8 is World Migratory Bird Day! At least 4,000 different species of birds migrate, which adds up to about 40% of the entire avian population. And they all do it in pursuit of food. Twice every year, these birds will fly to warmer climates for the winters, and then return home to breed. As humans, we can all appreciate the value of following food all around the globe. Let’s celebrate our feathered friends today!

National Shrimp Day – May 10, 2021
If the fictional character Bubba from the movie Forrest Gump had his way, every day would be National Shrimp Day. A connoisseur of all different types of the crustacean, and every which way to cook them, he’d probably be disappointed that National Shrimp Day is only held once a year on May 10. Luckily his shrimp legacy carries on with a restaurant in his name: The Bubba Gump Shrimp Company operates 40 restaurants around the world.
Shrimp fans all across the country can come together to honor their love for the shellfish, commonly called the “fruit of the sea.” Shrimp are interesting characters, and some can even glow in the dark! Elvis Presley even once sang a song about them, crooning, “If I should live to be ninety, I will never forget the little shrimp and the song he sang as he jumped into the net.” In the United States, shrimp is eaten more than any other type of seafood, so of course, it deserves its own day! Grill em, fry em, or eat em cold. Try them on a sandwich, on a salad, or one by one in some delicious cocktail sauce. Whatever you do, take some time to celebrate!

National Women’s Checkup Day – May 10, 2021
We jump at any chance to celebrate women and their importance in our lives, which is why we love National Women’s Checkup Day, held every year on the second Monday in May, on May 10 this year. To continue a bit of a theme, this day comes up right after the world celebrates Mother’s Day. In fact, it is celebrated on the Monday directly after Mother’s Day. Held to focus on the importance of regular checkups and doctor’s visits, this day encourages all women to take more steps and maintain better health.

With the exception of people who are born organized neat freaks, we can all admit our rooms can get chaotic from time to time. To the delight of parents and more polished  and friends, May 10 is National Clean Your Room Day. Research into the holiday doesn’t reveal who founded it, but for those of us who may need it (or have , friends, and roommates who do), it’s nice to have a holiday that reminds us to get our act together — starting with our rooms!
