Shavuot – May 16, 2021
Shavuot—or the Feast of Weeks—is a Jewish holiday, celebrated between May 16-18 on the Gregorian calendar. The holiday has both an agricultural and biblical significance. Agriculturally, it marks the wheat harvest in Israel. Biblically, it commemorates the day God gave the nation of Israel the Torah on Mount Sinai.
The holiday also book-ends the Counting of the Omer, a ritualized counting of each of the 49 days between Passover and Shavuot. The tradition represents the anticipation around God’s gift of the Torah.

National Sea Monkey Day – May 16, 2021
National Sea Monkey Day falls on May 16 every year to celebrate these little creatures. Sea Monkeys were created in a lab many years ago but since then they’ve become a common household pet. Many of us have happy memories of awaiting the delivery of our first Sea Monkeys in the mail. They are really popular with children and adults alike and, at one point, they were even heavily marketed by comic books.

National Love a Tree Day – May 16, 2021
National Love A Tree Day is celebrated every year on May 16 and it falls right in the middle of Garden for Wildlife Month. Did you know trees actually didn’t exist for the first 90% of Earth’s history? Shocking, isn’t it? Before trees, our Earth had fungi that grew 26 feet tall and resembled trees. Trees have played an irreplaceable role in the smooth functioning of our environment and celebrating this special day dedicated to them is the least we can do to appreciate them.

National Honor Our LGBT Elders Day – May 16, 2021
May 16 is National Honor Our LGBT Elders Day, a time to pay tribute to those who have paved the way for the LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender) community to obtain and continue to seek important legislation and rights. We have numerous elders to thank for the strides made over the last several decades towards equality. As with other civil rights movements, their work has not been easy. Their struggles and victories are marked by courage, persistence, passion, and authenticity so, today, we celebrate them.

National Coquilles Saint Jacques Day – May 16, 2021
National Coquilles Saint Jacques Day is celebrated every year on May 16 to honor ‘the Shell of St. James,’ another name for the popular seafood scallops. In France, the coquille is a certain species of scallop and, for this particular dish, only the coquille can be used. It is made with a mixture of butter, cream, mushrooms, and cheese. But don’t worry, in other regions that where the coquille cannot be found, people can use any variety of scallop and cook them in a wide range of ways.

National Biographer's Day – May 16, 2021
National Biographer’s Day is celebrated every year on May 16 to commemorate a very special event. It was the first time Samuel Johnson — a famous poet, essayist, literary critic, editor, and lexicographer, and his biographer James Boswell met. A biography is essentially a type of genre that features a written account of another person’s life. Did you know that biographies have been around since the Roman empire?

Drawing Day – May 16, 2021
Drawing Day is celebrated on May 16 and the best way to celebrate it is by expressing yourself through drawing just about anything you like. Did you know that drawing is an art closely tied to our history? Even cavemen who hadn’t yet learned to talk drew hunting scenes on cave walls. Today, we have so many modern tools to help us create extremely realistic and artistic drawings such as a plain sketchbook and pencil or a tablet and stylus.

National Barber Mental Health Awareness Day – May 19, 2021
It’s a near certainty that when you sit down in your barber’s chair they’re going to ask you how you’re doing. National Barber Mental Health Awareness Day on May 19 was created to ensure that we’re remembering to return the question, to check in with our barbers as they so often check in on us. Barbers work intimately with multiple people every day, dealing with different energies and personalities all the time. It’s not uncommon for a customer to unload their personal struggles onto their barber and that can be a heavy burden to carry, especially if the barber is having a bad day themselves. National Barber Mental Health Awareness was created by Booksy — the app that connects a community of thousands of beauty and health service providers with their customers— to help people realize that barbers take on a lot and to give them the opportunity to talk about their problems, too.

National Devil's Food Cake Day – May 19, 2021
When you’re doing desserts, why go halfway? Rich in flavor and moist in texture, devil’s food cake is a favorite for chocolate-lovers. They get their chance to celebrate their love for the dessert on National Devil’s Food Cake Day, held on May 19. With devil’s food cake, you get all the taste, and all the chocolate.
Devil’s food cake is not your ordinary chocolate cake. It’s a unique mix of ingredients that brings out the chocolate. Recipes often call for boiling water, instead of milk, and some even add coffee to bring out the chocolate flavor! Mixing science with desserts, the cake gets its darker color from its higher pH levels due to the added baking soda. The cake uses cocoa instead of chocolate squares, making it even fluffier! Some say the cake gets its name to distinctly contrast from the Angel’s food cake, which is much lighter in comparison. As more and more types of cakes have been created over the years, “devil’s food cake” is often used as a catch all name for a super-choclatety cake that doesn’t have nuts.

National May Ray Day – May 19, 2021
National May Ray Day is celebrated on May 19 and today we celebrate all the rays of sunshine in our lives. It’s that time of year when the remnants of spring bring the whispers of summer, and the sunshine is at its most inviting. So what are you waiting for? Take a gulp of that sweet summer air.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL MAY RAY DAY The origin of National May Ray Day was thanks to comedian Richard Ankli, who decided to honor his brother Ray, who was born on that same day. In 1977, the Broadway Fun Spot (nickname for a Broadway residence) in St. Joseph, Michigan, decided to commemorate the day by turning it into an official holiday. Richard Ankli is also the founder of Welcome Giving Day (celebrated in November).
Though National May Ray Day has many associations now, the general idea remains the same — to get out there and soak up some sun. It’s the chance to catch the last breath of spring along with the gentle rays precluding summer; a time when nature puts its best foot forward.
Historically, the month of May has many cultural connotations and significance. For those in agrarian societies, it marked the beginning of sowing or reaping, depending on which hemisphere they were in since May is either the last month of spring or the last month of fall.
The ancient Greeks certainly took spring seriously by celebrating the Greek god Dionysus (also known as Bacchus in Roman lore) — the god of the grape harvest, wine, fertility, rebirth, flora, revelry, and theatre. Furthermore, the month of May also has its origins in Greek mythology, as it’s named after Maia, one of the seven Pleiades (a twinkling constellation in the clear night sky).
For the literary ones, you may have heard it said that “March winds and April showers bring forth May flowers,” which can’t be more accurate. When we think of spring, we think of fertility, growth, and all-around merriment. Overall, the holiday begs to be one of enjoyment.

Buddha Purnima – May 26, 2021
Buddha Purnima is on May 26 this year (in India and Nepal) or May 19 (for those in Southeast Asian countries). The date varies because May has two full moon days, and the Buddhist and Hindu lunar calendars can be interpreted differently. Buddha’s birth is celebrated as part of a festival called ‘Vesak,’ which combines the three key events of his life — his birth, enlightenment, and death. Join us on a deep dive into the fascinating life of this profound spiritual leader.
HISTORY OF BUDDHA PURNIMA Buddha Purnima (also known as Buddha Jayanti) celebrates the birth of Prince Siddharta Gautama — a Nepali prince (circa 563-483 B.C.) who later went on to become known as the Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. The word ‘Purnima’ is Sanskrit for ‘full moon’, which explains why it is celebrated on a full moon day, and ‘Jayanti’ means ‘birthday’. The word Buddha is given to those who attain ‘bodhi’ or wisdom, hence the name was ascribed to Siddartha once he attained enlightenment. It is commonly celebrated during the month of ‘Vaisakhi’ in Hindu/Buddhist lunar calendars.
However, Buddha’s followers never officially celebrated his birthday, though, for many centuries, festivals to honor Buddha were held. In fact, the celebration of Buddha Purnima was not formalized until modern times. It was only in May 1950, at the first conference of the World Fellowship of Buddhists in Colombo, Sri Lanka, that Buddha Purnima was officiated as a celebration during Vesak. It was agreed upon that the day of the full moon in May would be auspicious, due to Buddha attaining nirvana on a full moon day.
The reason why Buddhism began to gain popularity was due to the teachings of non-violence, respect for life, and a more equal approach to the role of women — concepts that were very much in keeping with both tradition and modern ideas of progress. Thus, many countries around the world began to become primarily Buddhist nations, especially in Asia. Buddhism itself branched into sub-sects as each culture adapted and assimilated the main tenets. Today, Buddhism is practiced in different forms all over the world, and it is especially inclusive because it does not celebrate any deities (as other religions do). The philosophical bent of Buddhism gives it popularity across various groups of people.

Vesak – May 26, 2021
Vesak May 26, celebrates Buddha’s birth, along with his enlightenment and death in some traditions. The holiday has been officially celebrated since 1950, when the World Fellowship of Buddhists formalized it as Buddha’s birthday.
Buddhism is practiced by around 500 million people across the globe, in dozens of countries. Vesak is a holiday common to all Buddhists, but is celebrated differently according to local customs. Because Vesak is based on the Asian lunisolar calendar, the day usually falls on the full moon in the Gregorian month of May, but this varies widely according to each country’s traditions.

National Paper Airplane Day – May 26, 2021
Let your inner child fly. National Paper Airplane Day is celebrated every year on May 26 to commemorate the fanciful aeronautical toy. Paper airplanes have fascinated children and adults alike around the globe for generations. The day is usually celebrated with contests in two basic flight categories: distance and time in air. The practice of constructing paper planes is sometimes referred to as aerogami, after origami, the Japanese art of paper folding. Crafting paper planes is said to have originated out of ancient China, but the art is said to have been perfected out of Japan.
