National Blueberry Cheesecake Day – May 26, 2021
National Blueberry Cheesecake Day is celebrated every year on May 26. It is a day dedicated to the blueberry cheesecake, one of the most popular desserts in the U.S. Although originating in ancient Greece, cheesecakes have today spread to the far corners of the world and each region has its own varieties of cheesecakes. One such very popular variety is the blueberry cheesecake.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL BLUEBERRY CHEESECAKE DAY Cheesecake is a rich dessert cake made with cream and soft cheese on a graham cracker, cookie, or pastry crust. Often, it is topped with a fruit compote or puree.
Every year on May 26, people all around the U.S. celebrate National Blueberry Cheesecake Day. Legend has it that blueberry cheesecakes were fed to the athletes at the Olympic Games in Greece. It is a historical dessert that has been carried on through centuries without losing popularity.
While cheesecakes can be traced back to ancient Greece, the cheesecakes that people eat now are a more recent innovation. People have come up with different kinds of interesting flavors for cheesecakes but May 26 is the celebration of the classic blueberry cheesecake.
As cheesecakes spread to different countries, more ingredients were added and different varieties began popping up. While in America, cream cheese is the primary ingredient for cheesecakes, Italians prefer to use ricotta. On the other hand, Germany and Poland use quark, a special kind of curd cheese.
As cheesecakes became localized with time, bakers thought of newer innovations for it. One of the most popular innovations was the addition of fruit to cheesecakes and perhaps the best of them all was the sweet and enticing blueberries!
Blueberry cheesecakes, too, come in a number of varieties. Some of the most unique blueberry cheesecakes include blueberry mint cheesecakes, chocolate blueberry cheesecakes, and kombucha blueberry cheesecakes!

World Lindy Hop Day – May 26, 2021
World Lindy Hop Day falls on May 26 and we are getting our dance shoes ready to hit the floor. There isn’t a better way to create some positive vibes than by dancing, especially if you’re doing it in the right environment with the perfect music. That is what Lindy Hop is all about. A dancing style that has endured time by bringing people together and helping spread joy.
HISTORY OF WORLD LINDY HOP DAY Lindy Hop — also known as Jitterbug, is an American dance style that made its first appearance in the late 1920s with the popularisation of big bands. It crosses over dance style traditions from Europe like turns and embracing holds with body postures from Africa. Its geographical origin can also be traced back to Harlem, New York City.
Curiously, its name comes from a trend that occurred after Charles Lindbergh’s successful flight across the Atlantic in 1927. Many chefs, musicians, and even business owners paid tribute to the aviator by naming the creations and their establishments after the brave American.
The dance evolved together with the music it’s danced to. These musical styles stem from Charleston to Swing. Lindy Hop reached mainstream popularity during the 1930s with dance groups like the Harlem Congaroos and Hot Chocolate performing at exhibitions. The movie “Hellzapoppin’” also featured Lindy Hop dancers.
Lindy Hop had a revival during the 1990s with the popularization of neo-swing music and was even featured on commercials by large fashion brands. The opening of the Broadway show “Swing” in 1999 pushed Lindy Hop’s popularity even further.
Today, Lindy Hop communities can be found in many cities around the world. One of the most famous examples is the town of Hërrang in Sweden, home of the Hërrang Dance Camp, a famous meet up for Lindy Hop enthusiasts.

National Sunscreen Day – May 28, 2021
National Sunscreen Day happens on May 28 and is the perfect time to recognize the danger that comes with going to the beach, the lake, even the backyard. These and other traditional sunbathing spots, considered harmless in the past, now carry a yellow flag of warning against skin cancer and other ill effects of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. On National Sunscreen Day, which is part of National Safe Sun Week, rub and absorb that lotion, cream, or spray before enjoying the warmth and light of summer. The higher the sun protection factor (SPF) in your product, the better. Chances are if you don’t know the right balance of SPF to protect yourself and still get the tan you want, a friend will. If they ask why, just say, “Don’t fry!”

National Don’t Fry Day – May 28, 2021
National Don’t Fry Day is celebrated on the Friday before Memorial Day (last Monday of May), which falls on May 28 this year. And yes, the pun is intended. It has been designated by the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention as a reminder for everyone to protect their skin as they usher in the summer and prepare to enjoy the great outdoors. It is also to raise awareness about sun- safety methods and all the harmful effects that overexposure can have. According to the organization, the motto for National Don’t Fry Day is ‘Slip, slop, slap and wrap’ — slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen with the appropriate SPF (30 +), slap on a wide-brimmed hat, and wrap some cool shades on those eyes!

National Brisket Day – May 28, 2021
Unless you live in Texas, you might not have too much experience with the cut of beef known as brisket, but May 28 is a fine day to change that. Brisket is good for so much more than just barbecue or corned beef on St. Patrick’s Day. It comes from the breast area, and is separated into point cuts and flat cuts. Both have their uses. The point cut is fatty, and full of connective tissue, which makes it a great candidate for braising or smoking. It’s also full of flavor. The flat cut is no less flavorful, but can be much leaner, meaning that it requires a different preparation. Whatever your preference, grab some brisket and celebrate!

National Hamburger Day – May 28, 2021
Every May 28, National Hamburger Day celebrates America’s most iconic food. Americans eat over 50 billion burgers a year, so it’s only fitting we set aside a whole day for these special sandwiches. Originating in Hamburg, Germany, the hamburger as we know it was developed in Seymour, Wisconsin, a town still famous for its hamburger heroics.

National Road Trip Day – May 28, 2021
National Road Trip Day occurs on the Friday before Memorial Day in the U.S. (on the last Monday of May), so this year it falls on May 28, 2021. There’s a reason why ‘The Great American Road Trip’ is now a catchphrase — because the U.S. is the one country where road trips count as a holiday in themselves. Whether it’s to pay tribute to fallen national heroes by visiting war memorials across the country, or an excuse to get out of town and have a change of scenery; the road trip has been loved by Americans throughout history. From great works of literature inspired by the road to songs that we know and love — road trips mean something to everyone, which is why we are excited that the road trip has a special day of its own. Plus, who wouldn’t want to make the most of the long weekend by going out of town, and that’s where we come in, with tips to help you scratch that travel-bug itch.

Learn About Composting Day – May 29, 2021
Get out your gardening gloves — May 29 is National Learn About Composting Day! We all want to do our part to conserve natural resources and reduce our carbon footprint. Composting is not only an environmentally safe fertilizer but it can help you save water, energy, fuel, and money! It also keeps toxins from getting in our run-off and groundwater through the use of chemical- based commercial fertilizers. The use of a natural fertilizer made from compost will make your garden hospitable to wildlife helpers like honeybees, hummingbirds and of course, worms!
So, what it compost? Compost is organic matter that has decomposed. In a garden, decomposition is a good thing! Compost can be made from kitchen scraps, lawn clippings, newspapers, leaves wood chips, coffee grinds — almost any food products except for processed foods (no Twinkies in the compost!) and meat or fish products. Composting saves resources, and because of its high nutrient content, it adds to soil stability and reduces soil disease. It will help your garden grow lush and promote healthy growth in seedlings and plants. It’s for all these reasons gardeners call compost “black gold”. Composting allows you to accomplish the big environmental three: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

National Coq Au Vin Day – May 29, 2021
National Coq Au Vin Day falls on May 29 each year, and we couldn’t be more grateful for yet another day dedicated to French food. Not only does this holiday expand our cultural horizons, but our waistline, too! The name of the dish literally means ‘rooster-in-wine’ and it could not be simpler, since it originally was a dish made by French peasants. You may have heard the phrase “A chicken in every pot”, erroneously credited to President Hoover. The real propounder was King Henry IV of France, who wished that all his subjects would have a chicken in their pots every Sunday. Pronounced ‘cuhk oh van,’ it’s a dish made of chicken braised in a garlicky, mushroomy, bacon-lard sauce; with plenty of wine added.

National Paperclip Day is on May 29 and we are pulling out all the fun factoids and creative hacks that this humble little invention brings with it. The paperclip, in various forms, shapes, and sizes, has been around for a little under two centuries now, although who knows what the Egyptians invented to keep their papyri together. Such is the fame of the paperclip, that several memorials have also been created to honor it, for several different reasons. So we’re here to dispel the myth that the paperclip is simply a dispensable office supply by revealing the significance and alternative uses of this simple twist of metal.

Put a Pillow on your Fridge Day – May 29, 2021
Put a Pillow on Your Fridge Day is celebrated on May 29 and it’s meant to bring you prosperity and good fortune. The name of this day is quite literal, for on this day people are to put a pillow on their fridge for the magic to work. In the old tradition, people would put their pillows inside of their fridge for this ritual to work, but not everyone finds sleeping on a chilly pillow all that comfortable. You’re more than welcome to try that instead to honor the old ways, but only if you can withstand the cold.

Indianapolis 500 – May 30, 2021
They call it “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” — for a reason. The Indianapolis 500 is the world’s most iconic automobile race. Indy cars, as opposed to the stock cars of NASCAR, whiz around the 2.5-mile oval track at speeds exceeding 200 mph for a total of 500 miles. (That’s 250 times around!) First run in 1911, the race is now held on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway — known to racing fans around the world as the Brickyard. If you go, get there early, bring sunscreen, and get set to witness motorsports history.
Frenchman Simon Pagenaud qualified with the top speed this year — making him the pole-sitter — meaning he’ll start the event on the inside of Row 1.

Loomis Day – May 30, 2021
Loomis Day, which falls on May 30 each year, celebrates Mahlon Loomis and his important discoveries relating to telegraphic communication. Loomis, who was an American dentist, was fascinated by the Earth’s atmosphere and how it could be used for long-distance wireless communication. While most of his experiments failed and/or have been discredited, one of his most prominent experiments led to the accidental discovery of primitive radio technology. This wireless technology was further developed and refined to provide the modern world with WiFi, TV, radio, telephone, etc. So, even if it was accidental, the world has Mahlon Loomis to thank for the wireless telegraphic technologies we all can enjoy today.

National Hole In My Bucket Day – May 30, 2021
National Hole In My Bucket Day on May 30 pays homage to an old children’s song that goes by the same name. The song ‘There’s a Hole In My Bucket’ originated in Germany in the 1700s. It describes a deadlock situation where the character, Henry, faces problem after problem all due to a hole in his bucket. Henry attempts to find a solution through his friend Liza’s advice, but he is unsuccessful in coming up with a solid plan. The children’s song is filled with quirkiness and has been enjoyed by many over the centuries. There have been several versions of the song, too — some add adult elements to it while others are politically satirical.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL HOLE IN MY BUCKET DAY There’s no record of when exactly the first National Hole In My Bucket Day was celebrated, but that does not deter us from celebrating the day in all its grandeur. The holiday is commemorated in honor of the children’s song, ‘There’s a Hole In My Bucket.’ The earliest version of the song can be traced back to a 1700s collection of German songs, called “Bergliederbüchlein,” and it is in this version that only Liza’s name (Liese) is mentioned while the other character remains unnamed. As the years went by, Henry’s name was added to the verses, and the song was renamed ‘Heinrich und Liese.’ With the spread of literacy and globalization, the song went on to gain popularity in various other European countries, spreading as far as the North American continent.
The lyrics to ‘There’s a Hole In My Bucket’ are of a conversation between Henry and Liza. Henry tells Liza about the hole in his bucket and he is advised to fix it using a straw. However, for the straw to be of any use, he needs to cut it, but all he has is a dull knife, which needs to be sharpened on a wet sharpening stone. And in order to get the water, he needs to have a functional bucket on hand in the first place. This interesting tale of conundrums makes for an entertaining activity with its rhymes and poetic meters. People celebrate the day by either fixing the holes in their own buckets or recycling the faulty buckets by using them to pot plants or by making umbrella stands out of them.

Trinity Sunday – May 30, 2021
This year’s Trinity Sunday falls on May 30. Trinity Sunday is a Christian festival widely celebrated by Western Churches. It falls on the first Sunday after Pentecost, which is the 50th day after Easter. The day honors the descent of the Holy Spirit on Jesus’ apostles and followers. Trinity Sunday, in its essence, celebrates the mystery of faith and unity on and of the Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Trinity is not mentioned in Scripture, but Christians belonging to Western Churches celebrate it and God’s love for humans because of their faith and utmost appreciation for the Trinity itself. Many Western Churches celebrate the occasion with symbols of fire, wind, and a dove.
HISTORY OF TRINITY SUNDAY The first Trinity Sunday was instituted in the 9th century by Pope Gregory IX. However, it wasn’t until the 14th century that Trinity Sunday was officially established. Pope John XXII was the head of the Catholic Church from 1316 until his death in 1334. He was also the longest-reigning pope from the Babylonian era. Amongst other festivals, Pope John XXII was of the vision that Trinity Sunday should be celebrated by all Western Churches to commemorate the Holy Spirit’s descent as well as Christians’ appreciation of the Holy Trinity. Eastern Churches argue that celebrating the Trinity should be done every Sunday, and while Western Churches are of the same view, the latter has still designated a special day to commemorate this.
Unlike other Christian festivals, Trinity Sunday celebrates a doctrine instead of a figure or an event. The doctrine of the Trinity, which is not present in Scripture, does not have any explanation. Moreover, if the doctrine is discussed by Christians for more than a few minutes, it is believed that they are in danger of committing heresy. Belief in the Trinity and God’s three distinct forms is a matter of complete faith and trust. Therefore, on Trinity Sunday, Christians take part in showing their love for and faith in the Trinity by praising and giving glory to God. Churches and choirs participate by holding special services centered around the Trinity. Choral vespers concerts, evensong services, special award ceremonies, special meals, and social events take place on this day.
