HISTORY OF NATIONAL PEANUT BRITTLE DAY
Turns out, our favorite classic candy comes with a bit of mystery. Though there’s no traceable evidence about the origins of peanut brittle, there are multiple theories pointing to all the possible people who may have made the sweet and salty confectionary first. There are even narratives describing the creation resulting from a serendipitous mistake. One such mistake is credited to a New England woman in 1890 who was in the middle of making taffy but accidentally added baking soda instead of cream of tartar. Not wanting to waste any ingredients, she continued cooking and ended up with an accidental peanut bark. When she tasted it, she realized it was delicious and gave pieces to her friends along with her accidental recipe.
Another theory, bringing the origin back even further, is that it was originally a traditional Celtic dessert. Celts are thought to have served the brittle during holidays, supporting the theory that peanut brittle began in Europe. It’s said that they made the bark by baking a mix of sugar and peanut butter. The candy then made its way from Europe to America in the 1830s by way of Irish settlers coming to the New World. They became known for their cooking and various traditional delicacies, one of which was their peanut butter bark.
Though there are multiple origin stories regarding the confectionery, it’s absolutely possible that all of them hold some grasp of truth. This would explain the reason why peanut brittle from one side of the country might look and taste differently than peanut brittle on the opposite side. And as people move around, try different recipes, and create new ones of their own, all of the possible origin theories begin to turn into one bark of delicious brittle.

Lotus 1-2-3 Day – January 26, 2022~U.S.
Lotus 1-2-3 Day is celebrated annually on January 26. The day commemorates the release of the best spreadsheet program to grace the market. Lotus software took the personal PC world by storm and changed the way people calculated, well, everything.
This was a must-have office software that paved the way for other spreadsheets. You may have even heard of some — Microsoft Excel, anyone? Today’s the day we celebrate Lotus 1-2-3’s Birthday and the ease it brought to most individual’s work life.
HISTORY OF LOTUS 1-2-3 DAY
In the 1970s, when people wanted to calculate anything big (like office expenses, etc.), they had to rely on big pieces of paper — literally, ‘spreadsheets.’ Then, in the 1980s, a program called VisiCalc came along. It made number-crunching very easy and took its host computer, the Apple II series, to the top of the personal computer charts. Back then, all computer systems had a ‘killer app’ that made the whole system worth buying.
In this same period, two guys Mitchell Kapor and Jonathan Sachs, launched the Lotus Development Corporation. They developed an IBM P.C., and then our hero — the Lotus 1-2-3. Taking computing one step further, the Lotus 1-2-3 was a three-in-one tool that combined spreadsheet, charting, and basic database functionality – hence the name.
While the Lotus 1-2-3 was similar to the VisiCalc, it was much faster, boasted better features, and let people multitask. This allowed Lotus 1-2-3 to become the undominated market leader, which, of course, took IBM to the top too.
The company made a killing thanks to their ‘killer app’, bringing in a net worth of $150M in their first year itself, which increased to $156.9M by the next year.
A year later, Lotus 1-2-3 was bumped out of the top position by a program that became a household name — Microsoft Excel. By the 1990s, Lotus 1-2-3 was third on the list of topmost spreadsheet programs, and it was relegated into oblivion over the years.
Almost 30 years later, in 2012, IBM — which had taken over Lotus — announced they were retiring the Lotus brand. Lotus 1-2-3, the Lotus brand’s core product, was retired in 2013.

Indian Republic Day – January 26, 2022~India
The Republic Day of India is on January 26 and the nation welcomes the day with a parade and a tribute to the Indian armed forces. Special celebrations on this occasion are vital as it is on this date that the Indian Constitution was finalized and India would not be the great country it is today without its constitution. Here’s a look into the importance of this date and how it can be celebrated.
HISTORY OF INDIAN REPUBLIC DAY
To become a prosperous nation, India went through various trials and hardships before it reached a point where freedom was provided to the citizens. From being ruled by Muslim Mughal emperors to being controlled by the British, India has experienced it all. Since the country faced many struggles, it was a matter of great pride when the Constitution was formed in 1950. This is the day that is celebrated today as Republic Day.
It all started in 1947 when India gained freedom from the British Empire. In November 1947, a draft of the Constitution was developed and submitted to the Constituent Assembly. However, it took the Assembly over two years of discussions and modifications before the Constitution was finalized — the sessions held were open to the public.
Furthermore, the Assembly adopted the Constitution on November 26, 1949, but it did not come into effect immediately. The documents that established the charter were signed on January 24, 1950, and the Constitution officially came into effect for the nation on January 26, 1950. This was also the day when India’s first-ever president, Dr. Rajendra Prasad began his term. When the Constitution came into effect, it also replaced the Government of India Act and established India as a democratic republic. Republic Day is celebrated today to mark the day when democracy and justice were chosen to run the nation. It is this rule of law that is missing in many countries that are run by dictators.

National Spouses Day – January 26, 2022~U.S.
National Spouses Day is finally here! Other than Valentine’s Day, this is the only worldwide holiday that gives couples a chance to spoil each other, to take time out of their busy schedules, and to tend to their love. It’s a chance to celebrate your spouse and show your better half that they are indeed appreciated. Let’s admit, sometimes married couples need reminders to leave the hamster wheel that is everyday life. January 26 however is the remedy to all couples’ woes. Though the day is named National Spouses Day and seemingly refers to married couples only, nowadays, this day can also be linked to many people who are not married. What’s better than feeling appreciated by your soulmate? So, let’s celebrate happiness on this love filled day.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL SPOUSES DAY
The origin of National Spouses Day is unknown, but it is assumed that a married person came up with the idea. Some say it originated from the establishment of Military Spouses Day which was created in 1984, but only started becoming popular around the millennium. The day is celebrated as a national holiday on January 26 officially in the USA and UK, but many other countries celebrate it too.
The foundation of this day derives from the idea of showing thanks to your partner. Some workplaces even encourage couples to go on leave to celebrate the day and spend some quality time with their spouses.
Unlike Valentine’s day, this is a day created for giving time rather than gifts and celebrating your spouse. Due to this, couples are encouraged to spend alone time and to reflect on their journey so far. Scientific research has shown that twenty minutes of holding hands with your partner or cuddling even, can release hormones that leaves you both happier and feeling good. In turn, this relieves stress and makes you feel closer to one another.
National Spouse Day has become well known for igniting many media sources to survey couples’ behaviors and relationships and has managed to find out many interesting facts. This includes the fact that two million people get married every year in the U.S alone. Also, that 17% of them have previously been married.
Many couples have expressed feeling as though life can get too busy, and so a day like National Spouse Day is key to revitalizing relationships at the start of the new year. Others feel that your spouse should be celebrated everyday, but that an official day to commemorate your husband or wife is also seen as an honor.

HISTORY OF AUSTRALIA DAY
The official national day of Australia is celebrated annually on January 26 commemorating the arrival of British ships to establish the first European settlement in Australia in 1788. These eleven ships carried over 750 criminals who had been tried and convicted in Great Britain for mostly petty crimes and then transported to penal colonies established by the British throughout the world, including North America and the Pacific. An additional 300 citizens from military and medical backgrounds made the trip to Australia, establishing the new colony.
The first celebration of British sovereignty over the eastern coast of Australia occurred in 1818. Other names used throughout the years to refer to the date of this historic event have been “Anniversary Day”, “Foundation Day” and “Australian Natives’ Association” (ANA) Day. All Australian states and territories adopted “Australia Day” as the name of the day in 1935 and then in 1994, January 26 was official marked as a public holiday.
Serving as a day of national unity and the largest annual civic event in the country, Australia Day is filled with a variety of community and  traditions, the presentation of national awards and the welcoming of new Australian citizens. However, not all Australians feel the same about the day.
Indigenous Australians have long referred to this date as “Invasion Day” or “National Day of Mourning” in protest of the arrival of the British peoples. Some still observe counter-celebrations and the holiday has sparked a controversial debate. In 1938, William Cooper, a member of the Aboriginal Progressive Association, declared it as a “Day of Mourning,” alluding to the annual re-enactment of Phillip’s landing.
On Australia Day, many Aboriginal people mourn their forebears who suffered and and perished during colonization. Now, the day is also infused with deep respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. Protests to change the date of Australia Day to respect the Indigenous Australians also take place. The Australian government has acknowledged the traditional owners of lands which Australia Day takes place, in hope that Australians from all backgrounds come together to celebrate Australia as a multicultural society.

We celebrate National Clashing Clothes Day on the fourth Thursday in January every year. On this day, people are encouraged to dress in clashing clothing items from head to toe. Anything that is in a neutral color like white, black, or gray is a no-go today! Navy and brown also match with most colors, and therefore they aren’t welcome on Clashing Clothes Day! Today is merely a day to have fun with your outfit and show up in the brightest, silliest of hues, without the fashion police raining on your parade. Mix colors, prints, and textures, and you’ll be clash-tastic in no time.
HISTORY OF CLASHING CLOTHES DAY
Clothing has been around for over 100,000 years. In its earliest days, people made clothing using natural materials found in the environment, such as animal skin, thin sheets, big leaves, etc. The purpose of clothes initially was purely protective. They provided protection from rough surfaces, stones, insects, harsh warm and cold climates, rash-causing plants, ultraviolet radiation, infectious and toxic material, etc. Over time, lifestyle changes led to new developments in the clothing world. For instance, with warfare came the discovery of pockets to carry things and free your hands while on the move.
Clothes also came to have an important social role to play. Covering the genitals and private parts in public became the basic norm, and its absence is considered indecent exposure. Socially, clothing portrays cultural identity, wealth, etc. Gradually, clothing stopped being looked at as merely protective and became a way for people to express themselves and their individuality. Around the 1800s, designers set up fashion houses in France. With exciting, innovative designs and never before used materials, people were intrigued. Fashion took over the world, and fashion trends spread from Europe to other parts of the globe. Technological and machinery advancements were made, making it easy to mass-produce clothes. With clothing being available so widely, different categories began to form for different roles — sportswear, loungewear, business wear, etc.
Some voices emerged as experts and became reliable sources of information regarding clothing. Designers, celebrities, models, and more influential people played the role of trendsetters, and fashionistas established some unofficial fashion rules. For the longest time, these rules governed the majority of the public about what to wear. However, there is a newfound wave of experimentation and eagerness to stand out with confidence. Clashing prints and colors were no-no's for a long time but are now seen even in luxurious fashion labels. Clashing Clothes Day is a day for people to dabble into the bright, bold world of clashing clothes.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day – January 27, 2022~World
From 1941 to 1945 Nazi Germany and its collaborators committed the systematic murder of over six million Jews. The Holocaust, also known as the Shoah, was Nazi Germany’s “Final Solution” for eliminating all Jewish people within Nazi Germany’s grasp. By the end of this heinous act, roughly two-thirds of Europe’s Jewish population had been murdered. The United Nations General Assembly’s resolution 60/7 designated International Holocaust Remembrance Day on November 1, 2005, during the 42nd plenary session. Join us on January 27 for International Holocaust Remembrance Day when remember the Nazi’s act of genocide so that no one else will suffer like that again.

The magazine was intended to bring natural, historical, anthropological, and lots more other information to its U.S. audience. However, its popularity was such that it wasn’t long before it made its way across the globe. Pancakes are one of our nation’s oldest and best-loved foods. Around the world, humans have been making fried, flat dough disks since at least the Stone Age. The Ancient Greeks and Romans made pancakes with wheat flour, olive oil, honey, and curdled milk. The English later added flavorings like spices, sherry, and fruit.
As a term, ‘pancake’ first made an appearance in the English language in the 15h century but didn’t gain popularity until the 19th century in the United States. Other names include johnnycakes, hoecakes, griddle cakes, and flapjacks. There are as many names for pancakes as there are varieties: crepes, latkes, ‘boxty,’ poori, and ‘pannenkoeken’ are just some of the regional variations of the basic pancake. In one form or another, these starchy flatbreads, sweet or savory, play a part in dozens of cuisines around the world.
There’s another Pancake Day, better known as ‘Shrove Day.’ On the feast day before Lent, pancakes became an easy (and tasty) way for Catholic observants to quickly consume the dairy products and eggs that would be off limits for the next month.
In the modern U.S., fruits have become a popular ingredient in breakfast pancakes. Christa McAuliffe Day – January 28, 2022~U.S.
In 2019, Governor Chris Sununu declared it Christa McAuliffe Day on January 28 in New Hampshire. A former Concord teacher, she was chosen to go into space alongside NASA scientists and tragically perished just a few seconds after take-off. This event marked the 33rd anniversary of this disaster. According to the official proclamation, Christa McAuliffe’s memory lives on through this day, and the people of New Hampshire are proud to recognize her important work and legacy.
HISTORY OF CHRISTA MCAULIFFE DAY
In 1984, President Ronald Reagan announced a special NASA project — the Teacher in Space Project (TISP). It was designed for teachers to serve as payload specialists — these were people with skills different from astronauts, specially trained for a single mission, and who would perform experiments in space. The hope was that the selected teachers would pass on their knowledge and experience to students, further engaging the next generation in space exploration.
Christa McAuliffe, a social studies teacher from Concord, felt she had to apply. Her application stated that she’d seen the space program and wanted to participate. She’d always been fascinated by space, and she believed history greatly depended on regular men and women. This was perhaps why McAuliffe was picked from a pool of around 10,000 teachers, undergoing rigorous training to prepare for her space journey.
On January 28, 1986, at 11:38 a.m., the NASA shuttle took off, only to explode 73 seconds later. Investigations later revealed this occurred due to mechanical failure. McAuliffe, along with her fellow passengers, perished, but their dream lived on. Due to this, the TISP was later replaced with the Educator Astronaut Project. It required its civilian participants to become Astronaut Mission Specialists, experts selected as astronauts first and then assigned to a special mission.
Her journey and passion for teaching inspired the country and the world. Schools and educational institutions globally have been named after her, education awards and scholarships are given in her name, and science centers bear her stamp. Her legacy has reached space too — there’s an asteroid called 3352 McAuliffe, and two craters named McAuliffe, one on the moon, the other on Venus.

Big Garden Birdwatch – January 28, 2022~U.K.
Big Garden Birdwatch falls on the last weekend of January every year, and we’re going to show you how you can best observe this year’s watch. Do you know that it has been more than 110 years since the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds R.S.P.B. was created? Big Garden Birdwatch was a project initiated in the United Kingdom that aimed to raise awareness about the protection of endangered species, especially certain birds. Oftentimes, these species are driven out of their natural habitat due to interference from human beings. Big Garden Birdwatch is a wildlife survey organized to motivate everyone to take steps for the protection of these species and their habitat by counting and keeping track of birds in your garden.
HISTORY OF BIG GARDEN BIRDWATCH
The Society for the Protection of Birds (S.P.B.) was founded by Emily Williamson in 1889 who wanted to protect birds and animals from extinction. Emily believed that the British Ornithologists Union was not doing a good job to protect the birds and that they did not give the matter much of their time and focus. Emily thus proceeded to form the S.P.B., which was an all-woman movement initiated for the protection and welfare of birds.
In 1904, the S.P.B. received royal status, and thus the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (R.S.P.B.) was born. One of its first successful campaigns for the protection of ecosystems was in 1921 when the Importation of Plumage Act was passed. The R.S.P.B bought its first natural reserve in 1930, and today it has over 200 natural reserves all across the United Kingdom.
In 1965, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds started the Young Ornithologists Club to encourage young adults and children to be a part of the movement that works toward the protection of birds and other species. In 1979, the Big Garden Birdwatch was launched in U.K. schools as Big Schools Birdwatch. The R.S.P.B. became a partner of BirdLife International in 1993, and by 1997, there were over one million members in the R.S.P.B
In 1998, the Big Garden Birdwatch project was organized in the U.K. as a project to raise awareness and protect the lives of birds and animals and their natural habitat. This observance takes place every year in January, and hundreds of U.K. citizens register themselves with the R.S.P.B. to take part in this drive. The R.S.P.B. then provides participants with the necessary resources and guidelines. House sparrows, Magpies, and Robins are some of the species to look out for.

As the line between our offline and online lives continues to blur, Data Privacy Day on January 28 is the little nudge we need at the beginning of each new year to make safeguarding our personal information a priority. Although we live in an increasingly digital world, most of us give little thought to data privacy until after our personal data has been compromised. Our increased reliance on digital technologies to manage every facet of life necessitates the need to rethink what we share about ourselves, when and where we share it, and who we are sharing it with. Data Privacy Day is part of the global online safety, security, and privacy campaign called ‘STOP. THINK. CONNECT.’, — an initiative of the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA).
HISTORY OF DATA PRIVACY DAY
The need for data privacy is nothing new or unique to the digital age. Our personal information has been at risk for many decades. Personal data has been collected, manipulated, and shared or sold for decades, then manipulated further for profit by banking institutions, product manufacturers, political parties, nonprofit organizations, ad agencies, polling groups, airlines, grocery stores, credit agencies, and many others. Digital technologies have made the collection of personal data easier, both legally and illegally. And with 4.66 billion people in the world who are active internet users, there is an incalculable amount of unsecured data waiting to be pilfered.
Data privacy is rarely at the top of anyone’s daily to-do list. It was probably not on your mind when you logged onto your computer, laptop, or mobile phone this morning to check your email, catch the news, check stock prices, and all the other ways we routinely use technology to manage our home- and business affairs. Most of us are guilty of being complacent when it comes to safeguarding our most personal information from unseen but prying eyes. In fact, many people do not understand the difference between data security and data privacy, which may be the reason why so many of us are slack about data privacy.
Data privacy is not the same thing as data security, although the two are intimately connected and intertwined. The analogy we like best that helps understand the difference describes data security like putting bars on windows to make it difficult for someone to burglarize your home. Data privacy is more like pulling down the window shades so no one can look inside to see what you are wearing, who lives with you, what you are cooking for dinner tonight, or what movie you are watching.
As end-users on the technology spectrum, few among us pay attention to data privacy beyond knowing not to share our passwords with anyone. We trust software and data services providers to be the guardians of the personal data they collect and require from us in exchange for the right to use their products and services. But the personal information collected by companies today is not regarded as private by default, with few exceptions.
The unpleasant truth is that most people who have access to our personal data do not need it. These digital strangers with legitimate access to our personal data are the very people we should be preventing from accessing our personal information because they do not need it. Data Privacy Day is an important wake-up call for anyone who is ‘on the grid,’ meaning, they use any type of digital device for any reason, and thinks having spam software and firewalls are keeping their data safe.
Data Privacy Day reminds us to treat personal information like money. It has value and we need to protect it as if our lives depended on it because sometimes they do.

National Corn Chip Day – January 29, 2022~U.S.
National Corn Chip Day is celebrated on January 29 every year. Corn chips are loved by people of different races and ages. It is crispy, crunchy, and made out of cornmeal. The chips are extremely spiced with salt flavor and packed in the bag for longer life. Corn chips can either be eaten alone or with different dips at any time. They’re tasty, they’re yummy, they’re crunchy and they’re called corn chips. National Corn Chip Day would not be complete without savoring that strong taste and flavor of the corn chip.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL CORN CHIP DAY
Corn chips have been available to eat since 1932. Charles Elmer Doolin is the man who popularized corn chips. Doolin owned a candy store, but he needed to increase his stock by including corn chips. Unfortunately, all the fried tortillas he attempted grew stale very fast. But as history goes, one day he tried out fried corn dough strips sold by a local gas station. He loved it, and as soon as he got the recipe, Doolin enriched it and immediately sold bags of it from his shop in 1932. In 1945, Doolin came to an agreement with Herman Lay (of Lay’s potato chips) to distribute Doolin’s Fritos across the country. By the 1950s, Fritos had evolved into a bestseller of corn chips across the United States. The two companies (Frito and Lay) were incorporated in 1959, after Doolin’s death, to be known as Frito-Lay.
Today in the U.S., Fritos is one of the oldest and most recognized corn chips. A corn chip is usually prepared from cornmeal and is fried in oil, or baked. Apparently, corn chips or Fritos are often confused with the tortilla chip as the two of them are produced from cornmeal, which is baked or fried in hot oil. It often has the shape of a small scoop of pasta and a strong aroma and flavor of roasted corn. The chips are seasoned with a lot of salt and are thick, crispy, and very crunchy. They’re healthy and perfect for every season but, like everything else, should be eaten in moderation.

National Puzzle Day – January 29, 2022~U.S.
January 29 is National Puzzle Day, the perfect day to do a little brain exercise. Whether it’s a crossword, jigsaw, or Sudoku, puzzles engage our brain in more ways than one. Scientists have discovered that when we work on a jigsaw puzzle, we utilize both sides of the brain, improving memory, cognitive function and problem solving skills in the process. By utilizing puzzles, people can stimulate the brain improve a number of skills.
