Wordle, for anyone who avoids social media, challenges players to guess a five-letter word in six tries. The New York Times acquired the game last month for a figure in the low millions.
I do avoid social media. Wordle is a free browser based game available to all, part of its charm. A daily challenge, all are on equal footing to solve.
Now it has been purchased for millions of dollars... Ads? pay per puzzle? changes to hourly instead of daily? NYT will want something for the $$ spent. Would be game over for me, fun while it lasted in its original form.

kiwichic , My guess is that it will be part of its daily online publication. You'd have to have a NYT's subscription to play it. It would definitely be an attraction. Maybe they'll leave the online site as an advertisement for the paper and have a second word of the day for subscribers. Both my husband and I were addicted to the various puzzles in our newspaper especially the Sunday crossword. Now I get all my news online. Kinda miss it. Sure enjoyed spreading out the paper with my first cup of coffee.
ETA: I hope the NYT gives Denyse Holt and her daughter a free subscription.

That's interesting thanks Jo. Daughter and I do Wordle together each day, not sure we will continue if we have to pay for it. I was astounded to read that you can find every word for the next five years with a simple google search :o Not sure why anyone would want to know, you are only cheating yourself.

kiwichic, I haven't really paid any attention to this game because I don't need anything else to be addicted to but I had to do some reading.
It says in the first Wiki article, " The game was purchased by The New York Times Company in January 2022 for an undisclosed seven-figure sum, with plans to keep it free for all players; it was moved to their website in February 2022." So pay no attention to my previous post because I was wrong.

Know this is more then a year late but just noticed this thread. Wordle is free if any of you want to play it.
Another fun free to play word game is Polygonle.
Both are done daily.

patches, Ooohhh, and I was sooooooooo close to solving the Polygonie if only I'd bothered to notice the pattern of the polygons! Had all the letters and totally failed to note the added clue! Thanks for the pointer. :-)
