Ceville Group Play GROUP PLAY GAME ~ Ceville September 9, 2022-start anytime -All members are welcome to join us! -Start anytime on September 9th -Play at your own pace -Stop by this thread to post comments as you go -Have fun Tips
This is a third person point and click game. The main menu has new game, load game, options, quit and credits. The general options are subtitles and show possible combinations. The graphics options are choices for monitor resolution, texture resolution and gamma. The master, music, voice, effects and ambient sound volume selections are found under the sounds options. ESC key exits the game and accesses the gameplay menu. The gameplay menu has continue, load game, save game, options, quit and credits. During gameplay, right click of mouse is used to get a closer look at an item; left click is the action mode. To leave a close-up, click on door icon at top right of screen. Dialogue and action can be skipped by left mouse click. Double clicking makes the character run or double click on edge of the screen to make a fast transition to next screen. To save a game, click on the 'save game' text under the picture frame. The saved game can be named or deleted. An auto save is done every 5 minutes of gaming and is a default. It is best to delete some of the not needed auto saves regularly if you save games manually. Space bar shows all the active spots in the game screen. The P key pauses the game. The I key shows-hides the inventory bar. Exhaust all dialogue since a lot of the progress in the game is based on dialogue triggers.

Oddities - some strange things I've encountered so far that y'all may or may not hit, with what I've learned or am still confused at: - When you start the game for the 1st time, it runs a rather long "first time setup". In my case, this failed about 1/3 through, with an error message of "You must use 'Turn Windows Features on or off' in the Control Panel to install or configure Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5". Had no clue what this was and so just acknowledged the message & was pleased to see game continued on with the first time setup, and still brought up the game at the end. Does anyone know whether it matters that .NET setup was skipped or whether I might need to uninstall/reinstall so it can init? BTW, if like me you have no clue what, if anything you need to do in the Control Panel, what I found from the internet was: go to Control Panel/Programs and Features. There is a "Turn on Windows..." option at the top. Clicking on it will bring up a new panel that shows a bunch of Windows applications & you can check them to turn them on. In my case, .NET showed as only partially enabled. I did NOTHING with it & figured I'd wait till I hit a problem in the game before worrying about doing anything about it.
- Game screen flickered constantly for me after startup. You can fix it by going to C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/Ceville and right clicking on the Ceville application file. Select Properties/Compatibility and check "disable fullscreen optimizations" to eliminate the flicker on subsequent invocations
- Once clicking on start or load game, my system takes f-o-r-e-v-e-r to load. On start it talks about loading various "models". On load, it just indicates it is loading the save file. I have NO idea why it takes so long. Do other folks see the long delay too and/or know some magic incantation that will make it quicker?
- While running, my antivirus program (Avast) grumbled that Ceville was trying to delete a file from my Documents folder (each time so far it has complained about a file called THUMBNAIL.png), and Avast interrupted my gameplay with a Ransomware Shield exception & asked me to either block or allow the operation. Avast options were way too expansive for my tastes - ie, a global block or allow (ie, NOT file or subfolder specific). I was not happy giving such a broad permission to a game, so instead went into my Documents folder and right clicked on folder Ceville & (tried to?) delete the Read Only attribute for the folder & all subfolders/files. I dont know if this will stop the alerts. Did not recur in a brief time of replaying, but I notice that when I looked at the folder again, the attribute was back. May be a game-ender for me unless the program can run with such actions permanently blocked, since I dont feel comfortable giving it a global exception from the Ransomeware shield

I managed to get out of the throne room, the kitchen and met Ambrosius. Now it is time to start my day by walking the dogs, go to the market and get some groceries.
Love the dialogues, they are very funny.

I have AVAST, as well, so I got the same conversations from it like lurkercat, I have allowed the game "make changes/delete" thumbnails from my "one drive", since I haven't anything stored in my one drive, lol. Nevertheless, I did run a virus check on the game folder itself, and there was no threat found. I think, AVAST is a bit sensitive, it had problem with this forum, too, before. So, joybelle, I believe Ceville is completely safe to run, but do a quick virus check on the game folder to feel better about it.
The game is old, funny, there is no tutorial (just a bunch of funny blah blah), there is no hint button, the voice over is pretty good, but there is no caption so I have to play it with audio on (I usually play my games when my hub is sleeping, so I play most of my games muted)
I'm about to get out from the throne room. I like this game.
BTW - since there is little to none help in the game here is a walkthrough for handicapped ppl. like me: Ceville Walkthrough

moni, There ARE captions available for Ceville - look under Options. Initial state is off, so you do need to go there to turn them on. Did you find a way to restrict the permissions in Avast? Mine only seemed to allow me to give it universal privilege. I'd have no problem authorizing it to do whatever it wants in its own directories, but didnt like giving it broader privilege even though I've no reason to doubt it is probably safe and only mucks around in its own areas.

lurkercat, I gave permission to the game when AVAST popped the question "Allow or Quarantine", so I guess, it is a general permission... but I always run a virus check on every game folder prior to launch a new game (after downloading) so when AVAST chimes on me trying to restrict a game AFTER finding it clean, I know it's just trying to do a "good job", but basically I can ignore it.... Ceville was a bit perplexing, you know, how BFG asks you to "Allow to make changes" before installing a game with every each games we download from them, and how Steam doesn't do this? With Ceville it did! And I found that curious (but familiar, lol, because of BFG games).. Anyways, my point is that I gave Ceville a green light whatever it wants to do with my thumbnails in my One Drive documents without further curtailing.
And so much for the caption! lol... Sometimes I need to pull out my head from my behind Rough Day

Only got to play for a short time today. Had to babysit my great niece who is 12 weeks old. Poor me. I think her spirit animal must be a sloth. Too much sleeping and not enough playing.
So glad I didn't have all the problems with getting the game to work properly, so far anyway. It's funny and not overly difficult to figure out what to do next, so far. Back at it tomorrow.

D-u-h, ok, I'm confused. So Ceville confronted Ambrosius in the dungeon and Ambrosius broke his sword & fell (unconscious?) atop Ceville. Next thing I know, rather than Ceville just crawling out victorious from under Ambrosius, one of the "busy" screens pops up, a new bunch of models are noted as loading, and suddenly, gameplay resumes, now away from the dungeon, with Ambrosius having magically somehow captured and imprisoned Ceville. Huh? Last I saw, Ceville looked victorious in their dungeon battle and Ambrosius was seemingly unconscious. What happened? Did I suddenly doze off? Is anyone else similarly confused?

lurkercat , I'm still here too. Was having trouble finding time to play this weekend but plan to spend the afternoon helping the king escape the castle as soon as I get the other fellow out of the well or whatever it is.

at last I got started. No troubles with d/l but had the flickering issue - not a problem have had that with numerous games in the past. Made it to the dining room. Love the dialogue and OMG how abot that plumbers butt!

Ok, show of hands - who figured out how to get the good fairy's id and/or papers WITHOUT a walkthough? If so, total kudos for your ingenuity! I've followed the walkthrough and still dont have either....and admittedly NEVER would have figured out the method absent some verbal hint (which never occurred, no matter how diligently I tried to get one to pop up). Clever method on the part of the developers, but would have thought it fairer had they given some sort of nudge. And certainly didnt help that the method required picking up a totally invisible object. Of course it is hardly encouraging that, despite having cheated to find the method, I still have nothing to show for having taken the coward's way out. Grrr.

Sorry but I'm still way behind and having enough trouble trying to figure out who I'm supposed to be and when. So much just feels like trial and error. I like the story and the humor but personally I'm kinda struggling with this one. Doesn't help when only playing in short spurts at a time.

Am about to start looking for the lost ambassadors but I find myself slogging through this game. Maybe because I'm tired from trip or because so much *stuff* has happened here lately but some of it could be that there's IMO too much dialogue. Sure some of it's very humorous but some redundant

smitty189 , I definitely feel the same. Have had a lot going on so hard to find time to play for extended lengths of time which makes this type game hard to jump back into. Also three times so far have had the dreaded black screen that can only be remedied with a hard shut down. It is so random when it will happen. Anyway I have a couple of days this week where I can give it a whole morning.

Is anyone else getting the black screen every time you open the game??? I can hear the game start and get to the home page and a tiny sliver on the left side is visible. I can't task manager my way out and have to force my computer off to close the game. It happened randomly at first but now I just can't get in.
I looked through Steam for answers but only found that some were getting it during cut scenes (not my issue) and had some long convoluted remedy, I'm not comfortable trying, for their problem. I guess I could try deleting and download again but am guessing it will delete my progress. It's not like I don't have other games to play but . . .

So, am I missing some inside joke? When characters pick up crowbar at the Council chamber, Ceville asks Lilly "Should I call you Mrs. Freeman from now on?". Ummm, what?
