good2bqueen, You are a necromancer! (I was going to say "witch", but that sounded pejorative). I'd never hit the black screen. Started playing Ceville again shortly after responding to your note...and suddenly here I have a black screen after having switched out of the game via the Windows button to use a walkthrough 'cause I had no clue of what to do after getting the dancer's laundry ticket. {Spoiler}Duh, how was I supposed to know El Chollo ran a laundry in addition to selling his hair tonic??? Anyhow, on return from getting a hint from UHS, tada - black screen! How did you do that?! If not a necromancer, you must be a long-distance Typhoid Mary! :o

lurkercat , I am so sorry. I try to keep my negative powers toned down when I'm on line. Must have been distracted by my frustration. My computer is 7 years old, still runs 8.1 and I've been trying to baby it along. Hated powering down that way again after doing it 6 times. Anyway, I'll try to keep my witchy stuff under control. haha

good2bqueen, Just a hint that worked for me that may be of use to you - Thought I'd also have to power down since the black screen affected everything (ie, could see my taskbar when selecting Windows button, but trying to switch applications only got me more black screens rather than allowing me into those applications & clicking on the "close" button for Ceville on the toolbar had no effect), but found I could do Ctrl-Alt-Delete, then select "switch user". Forced me to log in again, but all my other open applications remained open & only Ceville was shut down. So, accomplished my aim but with much less time expended than if I'd had to do a complete restart or shutdown. Black screen fixed for all other applications & next time I brought up Ceville, it came up without the black screen (though later hit it again next time I "windowed" out to look at the walkthrough). Not sure if this method will help you since your problem was on initial bringup of the game, but for me, it did restore usability of my computer without having to do a complete restart, so you might want to give it a try. P.S. Got you beat - my computer is 8 years old, but is running Windows 10 (was Windows 7 but I switched when they had the free upgrade & was surprised to be happy since they made it easy to keep the Windows 7 user interface rather than having to step up to the Windows 8/smart-phone-ish style interface). Only drawback to going to 10 for me was losing the "good" Minesweeper game vs the version now in the Windows library, which is yukky in comparison.

lurkercat , Thanks for the info, you gave some things I didn't know. It's appreciated.
When windows 10 was offered everyone seemed to have problems playing games so I stuck with what I had. Priorities. Saving up for something new since they won't be updating windows 8 after January. Hopefully group game play will be fun instead of frustrating and the only challenge will be in the game.
