Every year family and friends will ask what I'd like as a birthday gift and I'll tell them an Ebook or an Audiobook Gift Cert but I never get them :( I end up with thoughtful gifts which I don't really need or use. Sometimes they are even more expensive than an Ebook or Audiobook. I'm an avid reader and if I like the book I also buy the audio version so I can listen and continue where I left off while doing my errands. Hubby says the gift certificate is not a very thoughtful or personalised gift. But as I have families and friends from the other side of the world I think an Ebook or and Auidiobook Gift Cert is ideal. I can just receive it via email. No more lost packages in the mail. And courier expenses are expensive these days. What do you think? Maybe I should ask for a Game gift certificate instead :)

This is a real problem especially as one gets older. One reaches the point in life, or at least I have, where one has accumulated all the necessities of life. And if something breaks/wears out, I'll replace it myself. It has taken me years to convince my family that I don't need pajamas, perfume or purses. What I really want/need is dark chocolate or a Steam gift certificate. Those always fit and the color is sooo flattering. It pains me to see them spend their hard earned money on something I'll never use. I've given up on buying physical gifts for all of them unless I'm aware of a specific item they want/need. This is especially true with my mother. She has a whole closet full of stuff she'll never wear/use and usually tries to give it to me. She told me that she wanted a coffee maker like one of my brothers had, so that was an easy gift to give her. I give hard cold cash to my immediate family and then they can get whatever they want with it. I haven't gotten any complaints although I'm sure they remember with great fondness opening gifts at birthdays and Christmas and getting exactly what they wanted. I think they may have conveniently forgotten opening a gift they didn't want.
So, kimisie, don't be shy about it. Just keep saying what you'd really love to have is an audio book gift certificate. Wax on elegantly about how wonderful audio books are. Bore them to tears about listening to your audio books and how enjoyable they are. Wear them down to a nub which is what I did. They can't look at me now and not think Mom/Grandma loves her games and just the mention of Godiva makes her swoon with happiness. At least when they clean out my house after I shuffle off this mortal coil they won't find all their gifts still in the box stuffed into the hall closet and say, "But she never said what she wanted." They know!

Jo , I shall continue to be persistent. Ebooks and audiobooks are also getting expensive these days. Friends and neighbours here are thoughtful they've presented me with homemade baked goods or homemade cottage cheese or yoghurt. Who could resist those?

kimisie, make sure you give them a link to the site(s) as well because some people are just clueless as to how to go about this. I always tell people I want a Steam gift card and most of them say "what is a Steam gift certificate" so I took a picture of a gift card for Steam at our local Walgreens which sells them and they don't have to worry about trying to figure out how to log on to Steam etc. Folks may just not understand the how's & what's so they opt for something else that's easier to buy

Sign up for Book Bub deals if it's available in your area. I get an email from them everyday with various deals. You set your preferences when you sign up. The books are usually available from Amazon or Google but once in while I get offers that include other retailers like this one.
I also get an audio book deal email.
There are a bunch of free classic books sites like Project Gutenberg if you decide you'd like to revisit the classics. Just run a search for options in your area. Also check with your local library. Many public libraries offer ebooks and audio books.
