Is anyone here interested in voting on our favorite games in all genres from 2022? For example: Best HOPA game of 2022 or best TM game of 2022. We could have the annual Woodsy Awards for the best of the best. The only way this will work and actually mean something is if we can get enough people to participate. This is not a Big Fish Games event. It doesn't matter if you bought your favorite game at BF, Steam, Gamehouse or anywhere else. So this initial poll is to test the water and see if enough people are interested in participating. That means nominating games and, most importantly, voting for your favorites. We haven't worked out all of the details yet but this could be fun.
Are you willing to participate in the 1st Annual Woodsy Award by voting for your favorite games in all genres?

to simplify the nominations (for whoever creates the poll) would it be a daft idea to have a different thread for each genre?

Somebody is able to vote.
I don't think that's a daft idea at all. But first we need to decide what the genres are.
Suggestions: (This is the list from the favorite genre poll but probably needs some refinement.)
- Hidden Object
- Adventure
- Puzzle
- Time Management Strategy
- Casual
- Word Games
- Role Playing
- Shooter
- Simulation
- Survival Horror
- Sports
- Platformers
Do we need a separate catagory for HOPA games like the Mystery Case Files and HOGs like the Amazing Vacation games?
As I recently learned not all games that I would classify as TM are in realty TM games. What genre is Barn Yarn and how does it differ from My Kingdom for the Princess? Steam tags for MKftP are Casual, Strategy, Farming Sim, Time Management, Clicker, Building, Romance, Medieval, Crafting, Resource Management, Simulation, Historical, Cartoony, 2D and Singleplayer. What is the difference? Does what I refer to as TM need to be broken down into different genres?
Do we need separate catagories for puzzle games like Match3 and Jigsaw? The games are very different and as far as I'm concerned should show some distinction.
I'm sure I'm missing some other category/genre variation so tell us what you think!

Barn Yarn is a HOG full stop. With your "earnings" you get to add things to your yard/barn, that's all. I mean, the levels are timed, but that's as close as that one gets to being a TM. MKftP is just a basic TM, but as with most TMs it's also about strategy and resource management as much as time. Those tags are quite out there for that one. I think that's done for customer search purposes more than actually being genres, though some are just flat out wrong. It's not a SIM and you don't craft in it. I think most of us TM players will be on the same page as to what constitutes a TM, but the nominations will tell you for sure. HOPAs are certainly are different than HOGs, so to me anyway, those are completely separate. What kind of games are Adventure to others? Different from HOPAs I assume? What we get from BFG for Adventure seems to be very different from say, Steam. M3 should be it's own genre, I think. Puzzles genre often includes Jigsaw and Brain-teaser type though wildly different. But I don't think we see that many brain-teasers in a year anyway. Still, great games of either type deserve the recognition. Card games? I gather they are mostly takes on Solitaire, but there certainly are a lot of those. We may just have to ask what other people think with hard-to-categorize games, as some games will fit into multiple categories easily. But we might just need a misc. category for games that don't exactly fit anywhere else but definitely deserve to be noticed.
This may not help at all, but I categorize everything I play in my own spreadsheet. Some categories might be missing because I simply don't play them (straight Adventure, slots, tower defense, etc.). Other than Epistory: Typing Chronicles, I've been able to fit my nearly 800 games into these categories easily. Then again, the info is just for me!
These are my categories: Adventure HOG (what everyone else calls HOPA) Arcade/Action
Brain Teaser/Puzzle (I don't play Jigsaw though so it didn't mean that type for me)
Build Card & Board
HOG Mahjong
Match 3 Strategy/SIM
TM Word

Here's an abbreviated list by popularity:
One of the problems with categorizing games is the cross over. For example, you can have an adventure with elements of platforming and role-playing.And there's nothing to say that isn't primarily an adventure game as opposed to a platformer. It gets very confusing.
Maybe we should all just nominate our favorite games from 2022 and then try to divide them into genres.

I only categorize my Steam games, since Steam has this option. I buy a game, I shove it into a category. Sometimes a game fits in multiple category, like an Adventure game with a detective story, so I add them to Adventure and Detective Mystery, too..
These are my categories... I should create an other category for games I'm playing, or started to play, but didn't finish yet, because I'm getting lost between the so many games.

I did a screenshot of a piece of my games spreadsheet. I have cut off the reviews so as not to offend anyone! ;) The font colours on the game titles tell me what I've played and what I haven't, or have deleted. The colour-coding on the category of games helps me find a type easily.

I tend to further subdivide my TM games into Greek, Roman, Viking, Medieval (yes, Viking is also medieval, but there's a difference between obvious Vikings and knights/Robin Hood), etc.
And literary games (based on literature). Examples would be The Count of Monte Cristo and The Great Gatsby. The Three Musketeers would fall into this category as well.

Jo , adventure is anything with a story with or without HO's? just clarifying in case I missed a convo I think we have to differentiate between straight adventure games and HOPAs. Sometimes at Steam someone will tag a straight adventure game with "hidden object" but it really is just finding inventory items in the game environment - not a list in a separate scene. A Tale for Anna is listed as a hidden object game at BF but it really is more of an adventure game.

How are people voting when we don't actually have a list yet? Or is it just me?? I have the 'poll' but no list to choose from yet? Maybe ppl were just pressing the 'vote' button to see what happened? Oh the questions are endless . UPDATE...(they were just voting 'yes' they would be willing to vote'...(lightbulb moment)... (and yes it worked...)
