kasie, pennmom, Jo, Did you know that a giraffe's ossicones (the horn-like protuberances giraffes sport on their heads) don't stand erect until they are a couple of weeks old? They are formed from ossified cartilage (cartilage that has transformed into bone) and covered in skin and fur. There are 4 main giraffe species and they have different patterns of "spots" southern giraffe (Giraffa giraffa), Masai giraffe (G. tippelskirchi), reticulated giraffe (G. reticulata) northern giraffe (G. camelopardalis), which includes the Nubian giraffe (G. c. camelopardalis) as a distinct but related subspecies. A baby giraffe whose ossified cartilage hasn't stood up yet. Mom & baby. they are starting to stand up! They also have the same amount of vertebras in their neck as a human! All mammals, including giraffes, have seven cervical vertebrae The only exceptions to this pan-mammalian rule are manatees (Trichechus, with six cervical vertebrae), the three-toed sloth (Bradypus, with nine or ten cervical vertebrae), and the two-toed sloth (Choloepus, with six cervical vertebrae) Yes, humans have 7 vertebras in their neck C1-C7

Did you know that there are different types of Zebras? Some have stripes that go all the way down their bellies and some have white bellies! Zebras are generally thought to have white coats with black (sometimes brown) stripes. That's because if you look at most zebras, the stripes end on their belly and toward the inside of the legs, and the rest is all white. That's because if you look at most zebras, the stripes end on their belly and toward the inside of the legs, and the rest is all white. However (there had to be a catch, right?), some zebras are born with genetic variations that make them all black with white stripes, or mostly dark with the striped pattern on just part of their coats. And as it turns out, zebras have black skin underneath their hair. So it depends on how you look at it!
