This photo appeared on our local neighborhood listserve yesterday and imagine my surprise to realize it was from MY house! Every year assorted animals make a den out of a dug-out burrow space beneath a concrete walkway that runs along the front of my house. Burrow was originally built by Mrs. Groundhog, who raised a family of cute little baby groundhogs who occasionally played on the front lawn. Several years later, Mrs. Fox moved in and raised a family of 4 cute kits. (Not to fear, Mrs. Fox did NOT eat Mrs. Groundhog, who merely moved to the backyard, under my deck). One year when I was fostering kittens for a local rescue group, I got home late one night and as I went in the front door, felt a brush of fur against my legs...a cute little grey & white kitten named Lord Greystroke made a break for freedom. He had a wonderful time running back and forth across my & my neighbors' yards (happily triggering their security lights so at least I could track him in the dark). Then he discovered the burrows and plunged down in, reappearing randomly at different places along the space. I had visions of fileted kitten, but happily either the den was unoccupied during that interval, or the current resident was out for the evening, and he emerged unscathed from his adventures and after a prolonged time allowed himself to be recaptured and returned to the safety of the house (hmmppfff, the chase was decidedly not my most favored activity on coming home at 10pm after a really hard and long day at work!). Residency in the burrow changes regularly. Most years I never get to see who the inhabitants are since they tend to keep to themselves and are rarely sighted outside the den. Apparently this year it is foxes again. Isnt this little guy cute? I'm jealous a guy walking his dog got to see this little fellow (and a brother who ducked back underground to avoid being photographed) when I havent been able to see them yet myself. (Hah orionsrose, I take your bear and raise you a fox! Ummm, actually, I think I'll stick with my smaller wildlife rather than your more fearsome creatures! ).

lurkercatHow wonderful! At least your animals are mostly cute! I envy you getting to witness such adorable creatures as baby groundhogs and foxes! We don't seem to have either here. This area used to have bunnies but... :-S We do get to see fawns some years so at least we get some cute here. I didn't know you fostered kittens! I know you didn't foster any of mine, but I just want to say thank you for the work you do. From following and watching other fosters online for years, like Itty Bitty Kitty Committee and Kitten Academy I can see how much work goes into it and I am in awe. My last 5 kittens were fostered and it showed. They thrived because of it. Anyway, what an adventure Lord Greystroke took you on (and had himself)! Glad you managed to get him home safely - I'm sure you were both exhausted! x_x

Oh goodness. I saw the whole family today - mom, dad and 6 (count'em SIX!) kits. Much smaller/younger than it seems from the posted picture - about the size of 8-9 week old kittens, maybe about 3 pounds each, I'd guess. Sadly, mom seems to have some fur issue going on - hope it's not mange, 'cause I dont think that heals up on its own. Dad has an injured right rear leg that he held up as he walked/ran. Didnt seem to slow him up much though. Both seemed to be taking great care of the kits. Even got to see 4 of the babies nursing. One of the kits (probably the one in the picture) is very brave & outgoing. He stayed out, not at all concerned as several people walking by stopped to look at him & take pictures/videos. Oddly, though we often get a lot of walkers in our neighborhood, no one came by while the whole family was out, so I got to see them exclusively. Sheesh, I really gotta learn how to use the camera on my phone so I can get some pictures of them!
