National Dress in Blue Day – March 4, 2022~U.S.
National Dress in Blue Day is observed on the first Friday in March every year. The national holiday was started to raise awareness about the causes of colon cancer and how to prevent it. The color blue symbolizes colon cancer like a pink ribbon symbolizes breast cancer. There have been suggestions to turn the whole of March — and not just the first Friday of the month — blue by promoting colon cancer awareness all month long. This would be akin to National Breast Cancer Awareness Month that takes place every October.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL DRESS IN BLUE DAY
The idea for National Dress in Blue Day is Anita Mitchell’s, a stage IV colon cancer survivor who had lost her father and a close friend to the illness. Struck by the realization that both of these tragedies could have been prevented, Mitchell decided to raise greater awareness of colon cancer. In 2006, she worked with her children’s school to coordinate a recognition day when students were encouraged to wear a blue outfit of their choice and make a $1 donation to colon cancer awareness.
Mitchell brought the ‘Dress in Blue Day’ concept to the Colon Cancer Alliance who officially launched it in 2009 with a nationwide campaign. It was also a means to honor those suffering from the disease. The Colon Cancer Alliance encourages people to be active in recognizing and seeking help for colon cancer by getting screened regularly to detect any warning signs before the situation becomes much more serious. Diagnosis of colorectal cancer cases through screening tends to occur two to three years before the diagnosis of cases with symptoms. A screening has the potential to reduce colon cancer deaths by 60%. It has been found, in fact, that most colorectal cancers can be preventable with increased surveillance and lifestyle changes. Simple diet changes or increased physical activity can ward off the risks of developing colon cancer.
The possible earliest case of cancer in humans was in the Ptolemaic period of 305 to 30 B.C. as discovered by American researcher Michael Zimmerman who found evidence of rectal cancer in the tissues of an Egyptian mummy of that period. This makes colorectal cancer arguably the oldest cancer type known to man. Zimmerman and fellow Egyptian mummy researcher Rosalie David did not find evidence of other cancers until the 17th century. Hodgkin’s lymphoma may have first been reported in 1832, but it was referenced by Marcello Malpighi as early as 1666. However, the first scientific records describing elements similar to tumors are all as recent as the last three centuries. For example, in 1775, scrotal cancer was discovered to be a high risk for chimney sweepers; in 1761, snuff was connected to nasal cancer.

National Salt Awareness Week takes place in the U.K. from March 4 to March 11. Salt is arguably the most common and essential seasoning in the world. It is even referred to as the taste or flavor of life. But, like most things, too much (or too little) of this fine seasoning can make you sick. HISTORY OF NATIONAL SALT AWARENESS WEEK
Since long before recorded history, salt has existed and been an element of human and animal diets. Around 6050 B.C., the first mention of salt was made. Salt was recognized as a valuable product during this time, and it was traded between the Phoenicians and their Mediterranean kingdom. This rich commodity was also employed by the Egyptians in religious offerings and to preserve their mummies.
In the 6th century, the exchange rate of salt became equal to gold. This was because salt at the time was a lot rarer and mainly gotten from salt mines. Thankfully, in around 2700 B.C., the “Peng-Tzao-Kan-Mu” (perhaps the earliest study on pharmacology) was published in China and a huge part of the writing described over 40 types of salt, as well as detailed methods of salt extraction. From then on, salt production in China increased and became a major source of revenue.
Salt was greatly used in Egyptian and Greek medicine. The Egyptians’ “Ebers Papyrus,” a scroll of medical notes and herbal knowledge dating to around 1600 B.C., describes several salt-based remedies for treating infections and epidemic diseases. The ancient Greeks also discovered that salt aided digestion, treated skin diseases, and, when inhaled, helped manage respiratory diseases. Although more and more people started using salt as medicine, it wasn’t until the 19th century that the healing properties and health effects of salt were properly studied scientifically.

National Tartar Sauce Day – March 4, 2022~U.S.
National Tartar Sauce Day is celebrated on the Friday after Lent, on March 4 this year. Tartar sauce is used on seafood, and makes a great dish during this period as Lent approaches. Since meat is not allowed, we enjoy fish and other seafood more with a bowl of creamy tartar sauce. The deliciousness never ends, whether we can eat meat or not.

The real origin of tartar sauce remains unclear. Some say that it has been in existence since the Roman era, while others insist that tartar sauce originated from France. A few maintain that the French evolved the condiment. The current tartar sauce originated in France as sauce tartare. It is spelled as ‘tartare sauce’ in some parts of Europe, South Africa, and Australia.
Tartar sauce is mainly made from mayonnaise with pickles, capers, herbs, and in some recipes, hard-boiled eggs or lemon juice. The recipes differ in different places to accommodate individual tastes and preferences. The sauce is made as a condiment to be enjoyed with seafood. The best seafood choices are cod, salmon, haddock, shrimp, and pollack. HISTORY OF CINCO DE MARCHO
Cinco de Marcho is a made-up holiday with lighthearted origins. It is the invention of a man who goes by the name ‘Carlos Fantastico,’ whose true identity remains a mystery. Some believe his name is a riff on ‘Caro Fantastico,’ a Spanish variant for the 1980s television classic, “Knight Rider.”
In 2007, while dining at the Mexican restaurant, The Matador, Fantastico was enjoying his margarita and happened to notice the date. It was March 5. A thought came to him. He was at a Mexican restaurant enjoying a Mexican drink, but the décor around him was green and St. Patrick’s Day was less than a fortnight away. He imagined a holiday that would celebrate the best of both cultures, and thus, the idea for Cinco de Marcho was born; a holiday with a Mexican name, celebrating the drunken jubilance associated with St. Patrick’s Day.
Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Marcho isn’t about excessive drinking. Fantastico believes that it is a celebration of finding your limits. He views Cinco de Marcho as training of sorts for light drinkers. Those with low alcohol tolerance can start building their alcohol tolerance from Cinco de Marcho to buff up their liver for the upcoming holiday parties. Many celebrators also treat the day as a general preparation period for the coming holiday.

Multiple Personality Day – March 5, 2022~U.S.
Multiple Personality Day is an annual holiday on March 5. Currently known as Dissociative Identity Disorder, Multiple Personality Disorder is a relatively new condition that psychiatrists are still learning about. It often goes undiagnosed among the general population. For those diagnosed with it, however, it can be a terrifying experience accompanied by unreliable mood swings and self-distrust. Multiple Personality Day aims to change those fears by spreading awareness of its existence, helping patients and their families with resources and methods to cope. Some observe this day by connecting with the many sides of their personality.
HISTORY OF MULTIPLE PERSONALITY DAY
Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), originally called Multiple Personality Disorder, is a medical condition of suffering memory loss, out-of-body experiences, detachment from emotions, and a lack of self-identity, which may lead to suicidal ideations. According to the National Alliance of Mental Illness, only 2% of the American population experiencing these symptoms have been properly diagnosed.
Psychiatrists once diagnosed people with having at least two different and distinct personalities. In the 19th century, the disorder was often misdiagnosed as sleepwalking triggered by emotional trauma or even epilepsy. The first patient to be correctly diagnosed with multiple personalities was Louis Vivet in 1885, and his case brought the attention of the medical world to the condition. Clara Norton Fowler was the first diagnosed patient to be properly studied by a neurologist in 1898. Schizophrenia was discovered in 1906, and for the next several decades until the 80s, it was diagnosed for most psychological cases including DID. Dissociative Identity Disorder can include multiple personalities and a wide variety of other symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and dissociative episodes, usually caused by unresolved trauma. Research has proven the existence of the disorder, but few people are well-versed about its diagnosis or treatment. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), first published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in 1952, helps maintain a level of uniformity to mental disorder identification.
Multiple Personality Day has two goals when it comes to observing it. The first is to empower those personally affected by the disorder to share their stories and find ways to love and accept themselves in a world where disorders aren’t well known or understood. The second goal is raising awareness about the disorder itself, helping others understand what it means to have Dissociative Identity Disorder and ways of managing it in daily life. The day aims to change common misconceptions and make the disorder well known throughout the world as a valid condition that should be understood by others. A multicolored awareness ribbon resembling a crazy quilt is the symbol of the day.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL CHEESE DOODLE DAY
Like many popular snack stories, the history of cheese doodles has multiple possible origins. One of the most accepted ones involves a man named Morrie Yohai. Yohai was the president of his father’s company, Old London Foods, based in the Bronx district of New York. After a series of food inventions, the company set about creating another using cornmeal-based animal feed. In 1948, their machines accidentally processed this cornmeal under high pressure, resulting in a tubular shape.
Adding to this process, Old London Foods started baking different cheese flavorings before finding just the right mixture. Cheese Doodlez then entered the market, becoming a delectable hit. Unfortunately for them, Cheetos, the other cheese snack brand, gained national distribution and had a broader market appeal, overshadowing its competitor.
In 1965, the Borden Condensed Milk Company purchased the Cheez Doodle Company, Old London Foods. Borden acquired the snack-food company Wise, where Cheez Doodle was eventually assigned. Wise created Crunchy Cheez Doodles in the late 1960s because people just couldn’t get enough of the snack. They loved the shape, the flavor, and didn’t mind their covered cheese dust fingers. It just meant they had more of that cheesy taste to enjoy.
Today, cheese doodles are considered one of the most popular snacks and their many flavors are well-loved. They’re part of the usual group of snacks you’d expect to find at parties, as well as ingredients for other dishes. Much like their accidental creation, cheese doodles have taken on a life of their own. It’s no wonder that these finger-licking snacks are deserving of their own special day.

Reel Film Day – March 5, 2022~U.S.
Reel Film Day is observed every year on March 5. The day is celebrated in the U.S. with film screenings and showcase events organized by independent cinemas across the country. Award shows, trailer launches, movie releases, premieres, parties, and other social events will be hosted by many from the American film industry. Film fans can enjoy this day by watching as many of these events will be open to the public or televised, or simply enjoying their favorite classics with friends and discovering fun trivia surrounding them. Reel Film Day is celebrated by cinephiles and just about anyone who enjoys a good movie. Film fans who wish to indulge more in performance criticism and movie star related updates can also see the work of top film journalists from entertainment fraternity.
HISTORY OF REEL FILM DAY
From engineers to technicians and filmmakers, there are countless people who contributed to the invention and production of the 35mm film. The first was Thomas Edison who invented the camera and projector to shoot films on. Edison’s cameras and projectors had a width of 35mm which meant they needed film of the same width. Eastman Kodak Company, or simply Kodak’s, founder George Eastman created and produced the film rolls that would eventually be used to make movies. To this day, Kodak supplies the film used for movies.
Disney, Paramount, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal, and Warner Bros. Studios came together in 2002 to form the Digital Cinema Initiative (D.C.I.) with the purpose of facilitating the move to digital filmmaking, ensuring a uniform, high level of technical performance, reliability, and quality control. Since the creation of D.C.I., more movie directors have veered away from traditional film to creating digital movies.
It is important to preserve these historic movies that were shot and displayed on film, and Reel Film Day is a day to do just that, a day to commemorate this revolutionary period in entertainment history. It was in the late 19th century that the first motion picture was shot on film, “The Horse In Motion,” and till the 2000s, the 35mm film was the standard. Kodak and Alamo Drafthouse, famous for being one of the only theaters in recent times that can run film, came together on March 5, 2017, to announce the first-ever Reel Film Day. On that day, Alamo Drafthouse and independent theaters all over the country displayed the beauty of 35mm film through screenings of a few timeless classics. Part of the proceeds of the inaugural observance of the holiday was donated to the Film Foundation for their film preservation efforts.

St. Piran’s Day – March 5, 2022~U.K.
Known as the official holiday of Cornwall, St. Piran’s Day honors the patron saint of tin miners on March 5, an important industry in the region. Cornwall is the south westernmost county in England and the homeland of the Cornish people. With a unique culture and language, Cornwall retains a strong sense of identity. St. Piran’s Day honors the legend of the saint who, after being thrown into the sea in Ireland, miraculously drifted ashore in Cornwall and blessed the local miners with the secrets of tin extraction. The holiday is celebrated with parades, re-enactments, and parties.
HISTORY OF ST. PIRAN’S DAY
On March 5, the U.K. county of Cornwall celebrates St. Piran’s Day, its most important holiday. St. Piran is the patron saint of tin miners, an industry that was the keystone of Cornwall’s economy for centuries.
Although much of his life is shrouded in mystery, historians believe that St. Piran was a 5th-century bishop exiled from Ireland. When he was thrown into the sea to drown, he miraculously came ashore on Cornwall’s Perran Beach. There, the saint built a small chapel whose remains can still be observed today.
St. Piran is known for discovering the process of tin extraction, giving local miners the secrets of the county’s most important industry. He noticed a black stone leaking a white liquid when heated up by his fire — and tin mining in Cornwall was born. The Cornish flag, a white cross on a black background, represents this crucial revelation. Tin mining changed the economy of Cornwall and remained at the heart of its economy until the last mine shut down in 1998.
The holiday gained new popularity in the early 20th century as Celtic revivalists looked for ways to strengthen local pride. The holiday has been observed in almost all Cornish towns since the 1950s, complete with parades and public celebrations. The distinctive black and white flag can be seen flying across Cornwall in early March.
Customs associated with the holiday include re-enactments of St. Piran’s life, live music, and the consumption of traditional Cornish foods and copious amounts of alcohol.

Ghana Independence Day – March 6, 2022~Ghana
Ghana Independence Day is celebrated every year on March 6. It is a public holiday for the citizens of Ghana and also widely celebrated among Ghanaians living abroad. If March 6 falls on a weekend, the following Monday will also be observed as a holiday. Ghana Independence Day is also known as Ghana National Day. The celebrations commemorate Ghana’s independence from the United Kingdom in 1957. The day is celebrated in public office with carnivals, parades, and other events. Private citizens celebrate the day with music and food, and some may even hoist the national flag at home.
HISTORY OF GHANA INDEPENDENCE DAY
Before the arrival of the Europeans, Ghana was home to the Ashanti, a powerful tribe in the region. Many different ancient Ghanaian tribes settled in areas that had an abundance of natural resources, including gold and ivory. These precious commodities are what attracted colonists and lured them to come to the shores of Ghana. While the Portuguese had been the first to establish a settlement in the region, the allure of the local riches led to a struggle for control between many European nations. In 1874, Britain took control over parts of the country, and Ghana was renamed the British Gold Coast.
After being weakened by the efforts of World War II, Britain decided to reduce its colonies and the power they held around the world, including those in Africa. This desire was bolstered by a rising call for independence in the Gold Coast. In 1947, the United Gold Coast Convention (U.G.C.C.), a local political party founded by J. B. Danquah, called for “self-government within the shortest possible time” following the Gold Coast legislative elections.
In 1951, former Secretary-General of the U.G.C.C. and founder of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah won a majority in the Gold Coast legislative election. He was appointed the leader of the Gold Coast government in 1952, and the Gold Coast region declared its independence from the United Kingdom on March 6, 1957. Following their independence, the new country was established as the Nation of Ghana. Nkrumah went on to become the first Prime Minister of Ghana, and Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African country to achieve independence from colonial powers.

Namesake Day – March 6, 2022~U.S.
Namesake Day is celebrated every first Sunday of March, paving the way for International Celebrate Your Name Week. Can you believe that about five former United States presidents share the same name and surnames? Namesake Day is set aside for people to investigate the origin of their surname and given names, who or what they were named after, and what the names mean. While you share your name or surname with many other people, there is always a reason why your parents gave you that name. That is why Namesake Day was created to allow people to research the history behind their names and see if they can live up to its expectations – if any.
HISTORY OF NAMESAKE DAY
The history of the ‘namesake’ is, in itself, a history of names, which is why many of us bear the same names today. However, we cannot say when naming began. But we do know it existed as long as humans have existed. From the beginning of written history, most names have always taken a descriptive form – that is, they were literal translations of objects, animals, or phrases. For example, Sarah named her son Isaac in the Bible, meaning ‘one who laughs’ or ‘one who rejoices.’
Also, Jacob was renamed Israel, meaning ‘struggle with God’ or ‘fighter of God.’ Early names were also compounds, for example, Frankish names such as Fredegund (peacebattle) and Childeric (battlepowerful). However, descriptive names were most pervasive, and as the pool of descriptive names grew in each culture, people stopped creating names and naming their children after existing ones. But as time went by and old languages went extinct, these names lost their meanings, and only the word itself remained.
The rise in prominence of the church began the traditions of naming people after saints and martyrs of the church. These include Jewish names found in the Bible, such as John, James, Joseph, and Mary, and ancient Romans that converted to Christianity, such as Mark, Nicholas, Martin, Paul, and Catherine. That trend spread across most of the world, with cultures abandoning their original name pools and adopting the Christian ones as they converted to Christianity.
Native saints and martyrs were also added to this pool. Due to that, many old names have survived to this day. An example is Edward, an Anglo-Saxon name, which is still used today because it was the name of a famous saint. Today, this tradition of naming ourselves after saints, martyrs, or famous people remains, and hardly new names are created. While some people’s names no longer mean anything literally, they still carry a meaning that reflects our parents’ hopes and dreams.

Read an eBook Week comes up annually in the first full week of March. It is a holiday that encourages the use of ebook platforms as a primary publishing route. During Read an eBook Week, authors and book retailers have the chance to publicize their books, attracting thousands of readers by offering considerable discounts, while some even offer their books up for free. Readers can then easily access and enjoy these books from the comfort of their portable devices.
HISTORY OF READ AN EBOOK WEEK
In 2004, Rita Toews introduced Read an eBook Week after being frustrated by the traditional mode of publishing and distribution. Many great books were being released by new authors, but their works were not recognized by regular publishers and distributors. According to Toews, it was almost impossible for new authors to be promoted, so there had to be another means of getting their voices heard. At the time, ebooks were relatively new and not well accepted. The best way to do that was to start Read an eBook Week. Immediately, she registered the event to make it legitimate and informed libraries, T.V. and radio stations, as well as other authors, retailers, and publishers about the initiative.
The holiday was created to allow new and upcoming writers to advertise their books to a much larger audience. In the same manner, retailers can also announce discounts on ebooks, while some go as far as offering their books for free. This gesture attracts thousands of readers. Read an eBook Week was also born out of the idea that ebooks are an efficient, if not a more effective way, of directing books from authors to readers.
A centralized website was also established along with the holiday, where retailers and authors can put up the promo for their books. It is from this general website that readers and book lovers are then directed to the respective websites of retailers. As a result, people soon responded, and readers were attracted in their thousands to the websites of the retailers who bought into the initiative.

National White Chocolate Cheesecake Day – March 6, 2022~U.S.
National White Chocolate Cheesecake Day is celebrated every year on March 6, a day dedicated to a unique version of everyone’s favorite dessert. Cheesecake is a sweet dessert made with soft fresh, cream, or cottage cheese, eggs, and sugar, on a crust of crushed graham crackers, cookies, pastry, or sponge cake. Cheesecakes can either be baked or frozen until the cheese and other components settle into a solid piece. The dessert is often served topped with fruit, chocolate, compote, or whipped cream. The most common cheesecake flavors are blueberry and strawberry, but today is about their less popular, most special sibling, the white chocolate cheesecake.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL WHITE CHOCOLATE CHEESECAKE DAY
Ancient records show that the early Aztec and Mayan people consumed chocolate in religious rituals. Not the chocolate we are familiar with today, but the cocoa bean. Once the early Europeans were introduced to chocolate, many consumed it as a beverage, and after gaining popularity, people started experimenting with many recipes. Soon after, chocolate cake enjoyed unparalleled popularity in the 19th century, and people started using chocolate in more baked goods. Confectioners realized that chocolate in desserts had an immense marketing value.
White chocolate, on the other hand, appeared much later. The Nestle company began making white chocolate in the 1930s. Meanwhile, in North America, Kuno Baedeker developed white chocolate in 1945. In the strictest sense of the term, white chocolate isn’t chocolate at all. It is made from cocoa butter, sugar, milk solids, and sometimes, vanilla. It does not contain cocoa solids, which are found in milk chocolate and dark chocolate.
The origin of cheesecake is easily traced. During the 1930s, the famous New York-style cheesecake was created at a restaurant called Lindy’s, combining cream cheese and cake into one delicious treat. While the restaurant shut down in the 1960s, the owner of the restaurant released the recipe to the public through the magazine Duncan Hines which acclaimed restaurants consult for their food innovations. Since then, the recipe has traveled far and wide, and today almost every restaurant serves cheesecake with its own variation of the original recipe.

We celebrate America’s number one cookie each year on its very special day on March 6 with National Oreo Cookie Day. At National Today, we love a good cookie. And good cookies stem from the classics. Alexander Graham Bell Day – March 7, 2022~Canada
Alexander Graham Bell Day is celebrated on March 7 every year. It was on this day that Bell was granted a patent for “transmitting vocal or other sounds telegraphically,” and on March 10, Bell made the now iconic statement, “Mr. Watson, come here. I want to see you,” through a transmitter. His assistant Thomas Watson, who was in the next room, received the ‘call’ and heard the voice clearly — thus, the first telephone call was made. In honor of the day, he was granted the patent, people around the world celebrate March 7 as a day of innovation and invention. The holiday is recognized by an official act of the legislature in Nova Scotia, Canada.
HISTORY OF ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL DAY
Alexander Graham Bell was a scientist and inventor who is best known for inventing the telephone. Bell was born on March 3, 1847, and all through his life, he was encouraged by his partially deaf mother to pursue scientific study. Bell’s father was an influential figure who taught deaf students and fostered communication within the deaf community, something which Bell himself was great at from a very young age. Bell went on to work with the deaf community throughout his own life and eventually married a deaf woman just like his father had done. His mother, Eliza Grace Symonds, and wife, Mabel Gardiner Hubbard, both lost their hearing due to childhood illness.
It was Bell’s determination to help deaf people that inspired most of his inventions, including the telephone. He was working on making improvements to the telegraph system when he got the idea to try transmitting speech telegraphically, something that hadn’t been done before. That was what led to the telephone. Telephones have become such an important part of our society today, and many innovations in communication have been made since then. In addition to the telephone, Bell is also credited with inventing the metal detector and developing the Hydrodome, a watercraft that set a world marine speed record in 1919. He was the second elected president of the National Geographic Society.
