International Scribble Day is observed on March 27 annually, and it is all about celebrating the creativity and the art associated with scribbling, which anyone can do regardless of their artistic abilities. So the last time you scribbled aimlessly to relieve boredom, you might have probably not known that there is actually a day to celebrate the stress-releasing act of scribbling.
HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL SCRIBBLE DAY
Scribbling is sometimes referred to as doodling and the terms are often used interchangeably but there is a slight underlying difference between both the acts and the origin of the words.
The word scribble can be traced back to the Latin ‘scribere,’ which actually means ‘to write’. To scribble is to write letters or words hastily, often in an illegible manner. Doodle, on the other hand, refers to drawing or amateur art. Etymologically, the word doodle is derived from the German ‘Dudeltopf’ or ‘Dudeldop,’ meaning ‘simpleton’.
So think of these terms as follows: when students are under pressure, they scribble on their notebooks, whereas students who are bored and daydreaming in class make doodles.
The history of International Scribble Day itself does not go too far back as the day was recently founded by Diane Alber, author of “I’m NOT Just a Scribble” in 2019. The book is about kindness and acceptance, demonstrated by a cute character, Scribble, and encourages children to create art no matter their ability. Diane made a Facebook post about her idea of initiating a National Scribble Day and got some very positive responses from teachers, so she went ahead with it.
The day is usually celebrated in schools where children gather for different activities to create their own Scribble, the character from the book. International Scribble Day encourages the practice of scribbling because, after all, every artist started with a scribble!

National Black Forest Cake Day – March 28, 2022~U.S.
If there’s one thing that we are absolute suckers for at National Today, it is a black forest cake, and you bet we are super excited for the day March 28 rolls around and we get to celebrate National Black Forest Cake Day. First of all, the absolute beauty of the cake itself deserves its own accolades — like those chocolate shavings accompanied with maraschino cherries and white cream! Don’t even get us started on the taste because then we are going to be here the whole day. Did you know that the cake was originally a simple dessert consisting of cream, cherries, chocolate, and alcohol? That still sounds tasty, if you ask us.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL BLACK FOREST CAKE DAY
There are many conflicting historical reports about the exact origins of the black forest cake, but all attest to its delectability. Some historical scholars believe that the cake was invented in the 16th century in a German town called Baden-Wurttemberg. Not only was the time and place famous for its Romantic era, but it’s also known as one of the first places where chocolate started to be added into cakes and other dessert recipes. Baden-Wurttemberg was also famous for its sour cherries and kirschwasser, which is a cherry brandy. It is believed that the black forest cake gets its name from the alcohol. ‘Schwarzwald’ is the German name for the Black Forest, and a black forest cake is called ‘Schwarzwälder Kirsch’ in German.
Another story points to the cake being invented in 1915 by Josef Keller, a pastry chef at Caf Arend in Bad Godesberg. But it only started becoming popular around the 1930s. Interestingly, another historian claims that the master patissier, Erwin Hildenbrand, was the one who came up with the recipe in 1930. Hildenbrand had been working in different areas of the German Black Forest.
Today, the cake is enjoyed in many parts of the world with slight variations. The American version does not have any alcohol in it but, in places like Austria and Germany, a true black forest cake must have alcohol in it for it to even be considered a black forest cake in the first place.

The origins of National Something On a Stick Day, celebrated every March 28, remain unclear despite our research and digging. From ancient Greece, Homer’s “Iliad” makes mention of cooking meat on skewers. In the absence of a metal grill to set over a wood fire, piercing your meat with a sharpened stick and holding it over the flames to cook while you turn it and adjust its height above the flames for ideal doneness is a no-brainer. Perhaps this is the sole reason that this method has been around for millennia.
There’s even a story, popular among medieval scholars, of Turkish soldiers in the crusades using their swords as spits to cook meat with. Make that thing a multitasker!
So the next time you are out camping and you cook your hot dog at the end of a sapling branch you’ve found, know that you’re in good company — humans have cooked meat that way for almost as long as there have been humans. And National Something On a Stick Day is the perfect time to reflect on that.

The origin of National Weed Appreciation Day is unknown. However, the acknowledgment of the benefits and value of weeds can be traced back to history. Dandelions, which are common garden weeds, remained an important component of traditional Chinese medicine for at least a thousand years. Dandelion roots and leaves were used as a tonic to remove toxins from the bloodstream to improve the function of the digestive system. Serfs’ Emancipation Day – March 28, 2022~Tibet
Serfs’ Emancipation Day (also called Serfs’ Liberation Day), held on March 28 each year, is a Tibetan national holiday to mark what China calls freedom from serfdom. Multiple state-level functions and ceremonies are held on this day, especially in the capital city of China’s Tibet Autonomous Region. According to state media, this democratic reform freed around one million Tibetan serfs.
HISTORY OF SERFS’ EMANCIPATION DAY
Tibet had been under China’s rule for a long time — since 1720. A revolution later, Tibet became a de-facto independent region in 1911, separate from the rest of China.
However, China and Tibet’s shared border, a region called Kham, was long sought after by neighboring authorities. Half of this land was under the previous Chinese government (the one before establishing the People’s Republic of China) and part was controlled by Tibetan authorities.
Once the new Chinese government was established, a delegation of Tibetan government officials opened a dialogue — in 1950 — to secure assurances that the People’s Republic of China would respect Tibet’s territorial integrity. While the talk itself was delayed by a few months, due to a debate about the proposed location — it was eventually held at the end of the same year. China, however, proposed another alternative. They would be responsible for Tibet’s defense, trade, and foreign relations. To maintain the China-Tibet relationship, the Tibetans agreed to these terms, and the relationship became like a preceptor and patron. Later, author and Tibet scholar Melvyn Goldstein noted, the aim was not to invade Tibet but to get Tibetans and the government to accede to China’s sovereignty over Tibet. The following year, in 1951, after more talks (and a Chinese invasion in which they crossed the Khampa border), saw Tibet fall under China’s rule.
Although a special document, known as the ‘Seventeen Point Agreement,’ was signed in 1951 agreeing to China’s authority over Tibet, the Dalai Lama (then-spiritual leader of Tibet) and the People’s Republic of China later repudiated this agreement. The Dalai Lama fled to India in March 1959, and Zhou Enlai, the then-Premier of the People’s Republic of China, declared the dissolution of the government of Tibet.
He issued a State Council Order to this effect. The order also called for stopping all uprisings from nationals, and to confiscate rebel possessions that were to be handed over to the serfs. China estimated that over a million such Tibetan serfs — reportedly comprising 90% of the population — were freed from bondage.
In January 2009, 50 years after this political liberation, the Chinese government established Serfs’ Emancipation Day to highlight the democratic reform and economic prosperity that China brought to Tibet. The bill for establishing this day was put before the second annual session of the ninth Regional People’s Congress for review. It was unanimously approved by the 382 legislators attending the session and, thus, this day was born.

HISTORY OF WORLD PIANO DAY
Why do we need a World Piano Day? “For many reasons. But mostly, because it doesn’t hurt to celebrate the piano and everything around it: performers, composers, piano builders, tuners, movers, and most importantly, the listener,” replied Nils Frahm, the German pianist, and composer who initiated World Piano Day in 2015. The idea behind it was to celebrate the piano across the world by holding events, performances, masterclasses, lectures, etc.. Since its launch, World Piano Day has gained immense popularity, with participation from pianists, promotors, organizers, distributors, technicians, piano enthusiasts, and basically anyone associated with the instrument.
Hammered dulcimers were the very first string instrument used since the Middle Ages in Europe. After several attempts of creating stringed keyboard instruments, the mechanisms of the clavichord and the harpsichord were developed during the 17th century.
As the Mozart-era piano underwent changes from 1790 to 1860, the modern structure of the instrument came into existence. These alterations were a result of the preferences of composers and pianists who wanted more powerful and sustained sounds. Over time, the tonal range of the piano was also increased from the five to the seven octaves that can be found in the modern-day piano.

National Vietnam War Veterans Day – March 29, 2022~U.S.
We commemorate those who fought in the Vietnam War on National Vietnam War Veterans Day, March 29. There’s no doubt that the Vietnam War was one of the most brutal. In fact, over three million people were killed during the 20 years it went on. It was known as the Second Indochina War to Americans, and considering its long fighting time and brutality, National Vietnam War Veterans Day was created to honor all the men and women who fought during its time.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL VIETNAM WAR VETERANS DAY
The Vietnam War has a long history. It was one of the longest wars involving America. Starting in 1955, the war went on until 1975, making it the second-longest war, aside from the ongoing Afghanistan War. Over 2.7 million Americans served during this war In 1973. All combat and support units withdrew from Vietnam following the war, but it continued to have an impact on many of the families and people affected by the war.
National Vietnam War Veterans Day is acknowledged on March 29 every year, honoring anyone who served during its 20-year time. Since respect and combat support wasn’t immediately given to those who served after the war ended because of the number of deaths, the day was founded in 2017 to finally offer that respect to everyone involved.
Understanding that it wasn’t the soldiers’ choices to go to war, U.S. Senators Pat Toomey, R-Pa., and Joe Donnelly, D-Ind., introduced the legislation proposing the anniversary of the withdrawal of military units from South Vietnam as the date. It was President Donald Trump who signed the Act on March 29, calling for U.S. flags to be flown on this day to honor everyone who served during this time, whether they were in Vietnam or not.
Every year since it was founded in 2017, this national day has continued to be recognized on March 29. Aside from honoring those who fought, four other parts of this day that are meant to be highlighted are the service of the Armed Forces and support organizations during the war; the wartime contributions at home; the advancements in technology, science, and medicine; and the contributions by American allies.

National Smoke and Mirrors Day – March 29, 2022~U.S.
Though the origin of National Smoke and Mirrors Day, March 29, is unknown, it most likely is intended both to promote appreciation of the art and skill of magicians who specialize in illusions and to remind us all to be wary of deceptive practices in daily life. Today, “smoke and mirrors” usually means that we’re being hoodwinked into believing something is true or that it is functional when it really isn’t. It’s a reminder that unlike Dorothy, we shouldn’t wait until the end to pull back the curtain to see if what we thought is real is actually masterful fakery.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL SMOKE AND MIRRORS DAY
Skill, secrecy, and deception have been driving the practice of the magical arts for centuries. Archaeologists have found the elementary cup and ball trick depicted on the wall of an Egyptian tomb. Priests were the main practitioners of magic in pharaonic Egypt, where they were seen as guardians of a secret knowledge given by the gods to humanity to ‘ward off the blows of fate’.
Real lector priests performed magical rituals to protect their king and to help the dead to rebirth. By the first millennium BC, their role seemed to have been taken over by magicians (hekau). Amulets were a source of magic power, obtainable from ‘protection-makers’, who could be male or female. Metal wands representing the snake goddess Great of Magic were carried by some practitioners of magic.
The classic technique of “smoke and mirrors” was in use by the 1770s in Germany. Johann Georg Schröpfer manipulated these elements to make it appear that an entity was hovering in the air. Schröpfer relied on a magic lantern, a primitive precursor of the slide projector, which paired a concave mirror with convex lenses and a candle for illumination, to create images.
Schröpfer had established a breakaway Freemason lodge in Leipzig, founded on the assertion that only his group knew the true Masonic truths and only he could communicate with the spirit world. He bought a coffeehouse and renovated it as a venue where he held séances. After his death, other showmen carried on for him, serving up what came to be called Phantasmagoria shows. These shows specialized in supernatural sensationalism.
In 1865, a British academic created one of the most famous mirror tricks, the Sphinx Illusion, which was popularized by magician Colonel Stodare. The illusion claimed to reveal the disembodied head of the Sphinx, which had been cursed by a pharaoh. The underpinning of the illusion is two contiguous mirrors angled so that they reflect a surrounding background material, while the subject merely kneels behind with the head presented above the whole artifice. The detached head appears to float. This fundamental principle of reflection is still essential to deception.

Martyrs’ Day in Madagascar – March 29, 2022~Madagascar
Martyrs’ Day on March 29 every year is a very special celebration in the country! Held in honor of all those people who died in the 1947 revolt against the French, Martyrs’ Day is a public holiday on this island. This day also goes by the names ‘Commemoration Day’ or ‘Insurrection Day.’
HISTORY OF MARTYRS’ DAY IN MADAGASCAR
The Kingdom of Madagascar was an independent nation that came under French rule because the French thought the island was a great strategic location. They removed the monarchy that ruled Madagascar and imposed colonial rule. During that first year of French occupation, revolts arose but were quickly squashed. A nationalist movement grew too, under different names across the island.
The tides began to turn with the Second World War. The French fought against the British, unsuccessfully, and their post-war actions increased anti-French sentiment to a furor on the island. Various secret organizations popped up, like the Democratic Movement for the Malagasy Renovation (M.D.R.M.), all of whom had one goal in mind — freeing Madagascar from their colonial oppressors.
Many of these movements failed, however, and contributed to the events that launched Martyrs’ Day. On the evening of March 29, 1947, hundreds of men, armed with lances and machetes, attacked the military camp of Moramanga and the coastal cities of Manakara and Vohipeno. The rebels fought against Europeans and anyone considered to be pro-French. The rebellion spread around the island in the following months. By May, additional French troops arrived, quashing this insurgency, and allowing the French to regain control of Madagascar.
There were many casualties, although the actual number varies. Most rebels were punished and the French blamed the leaders of the M.D.R.M., even though there was no evidence to support their theory. By the following year, this rebellion had been completely subdued.
While the French buried the rebellion, they were forced to establish reforms and new laws to deal with the Malagasy people. The rebellion served another, arguably more important cause. It paved the way for the country to move towards independence, but without the need for violence.
By 1960, the Malagasy people had gained their independence from the French, and President Philibert Tsiranana established Martyrs’ Day seven years later. Initially observed as a day of mourning for all the lives lost on March 29, this day has evolved to remember the sacrifice and celebrate the freedom the country now enjoys. Most people treat this as a  holiday, spending time with loved ones and relaxing over the long weekend

He was the person who first baked the Chiffon cake. He kept the recipe a secured secret for years, until (probably after many appeals), he finally sold it to Betty Crocker in 1947. And the delightful packet-mix came to be the best-selling favorite that is well-known and loved all over the world today.
Barker came up with the recipe in 1927; he found the excellent mixture and methods to achieve the airy richness he was looking for. Mixing both egg whites and baking powder to gain an incomparable lightness. Back then in the 1920s, the angel food cake was famous, but it contained no butter, fat, or shortening of any sort, and so Baker added vegetable oil. Today adding vegetable oil to cake recipes is normal. It wasn’t so back in 1927. His cakes grew in popularity, and he went on to make a variety of chiffon cakes. He sold his recipe for an undisclosed amount. But we assume it was worth a lot, and we’re happy he did, as we all can get to taste the slices of joy in these chiffon cakes.
That fluffy, light, and airy texture of a lemon chiffon cake are accomplished by using stiffened egg whites that are folded into the batter and replacing butter. This makes Chiffon cakes lower in saturated fat than butter cakes, potentially making them healthier than their butter-heavy counterparts. The egg whites in the cake make the cake remain appreciably moist, and the lack of butter flavoring is tastefully replaced by the juicy lemon zest. A true treat for all to enjoy!

Land Day – March 30, 2022~Palestine
Land Day — held on March 30 each year — is a day of significance for Palestinian citizens and the Palestinian diaspora everywhere. It marks a special moment in Palestinian history when protests against land confiscation by Israel turned deadly for six people. The day not only commemorates this past event, but it also celebrates the Palestinian spirit of revolution.
HISTORY OF LAND DAY
It began in 1976. The Israeli government declared its intention to requisition lands — from Arab villages like Sakhnin and Arraba in the Galilee region of Israel — for official use. This move would displace numerous Arab citizens.
The very first political organization claiming to represent all Palestinians, the National Committee for the Defense of Arab Lands, called for a strike. They named this ‘Land Day’ and launched widespread protests, mostly in the affected areas. This was significant, considering public protests by Arab citizens were rare to non-existent prior to the 1970s. Political movements were active but sporadic. This event united Arabs on both sides of the Israeli border.
The protest itself did not stop the land expropriation plan. Protestors were met with strong resistance. Hundreds were injured and six people lost their lives.
Sixteen years after the incident, Land Day became a national holiday in Palestine and is celebrated annually with demonstrations and a general strike by Palestinians everywhere.
This movement gained a renewed surge in 2018 when thousands of Palestinians — families, people of all ages, and genders — commemorated Land Day by peacefully walking towards the border areas along the Gaza Strip. They dubbed this the Great March of Return and originally intended to highlight the sacrifices of those who resisted and continue to resist land acquisition; it is also a protest against Israel’s 10-year long siege of Gaza. Since that year, Palestinians in Gaza have held weekly marches towards a security fence put up by Israel. They mainly attempt to break the siege around their territory and demand their land back as well.
Land Day has been commemorated by Palestinians in locations worldwide — U.S., Canada, Germany, Finland, France, Belgium — and continues till today.

Doctors' Day – March 30, 2022~U.S.
March 30 is Doctors’ Day, an annual observance aimed at appreciating physicians who help save our lives everywhere. The holiday first started in 1933 in Winder, Georgia, and since then it’s been honored every year on March 30 which was the first anniversary of a doctor using ether anesthesia by Dr. Crawford W. Long. Today we continue to celebrate medical advances like these and thank all doctors everywhere who’ve spent so much time and energy mastering their field of expertise.
WHEN IS DOCTORS' DAY 2022?
Doctors’ Day is celebrated annually on March 30. It is a day to celebrate doctors, surgeons, nurses, physicians, and of course, “Grey’s Anatomy.”
HISTORY OF DOCTORS' DAY
Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of a doctor in Georgia, believed her husband and other physicians deserved more recognition for their hard work and set out to make this idea a reality. The first observed Doctors’ Day occurred on March 30, 1933, exactly 91 years after Dr. Long’s remarkable discovery.
Almond mailed greeting cards to all local physicians and their wives, and she put flowers on the graves of deceased doctors, including Dr. Long. The flowers were red carnations, which would later become the representative flower for the national holiday. A few other local doctors’ wives even assisted Almond in preparing a celebratory luncheon so their husbands’ work in healthcare could be publicly appreciated.
The tradition of delivering greeting cards to physicians, both alive and dead, has continued throughout the years and is still a common way of celebrating this holiday today. The red carnation is also still popularly used to say “” to doctors for their work in medicine.
Doctors’ Day was unofficially celebrated for many years before it became a legal holiday. On March 30, 1958, the U.S. House of Representatives adopted a resolution that commemorates Doctors’ Day and on October 30, 1990, George W. Bush signed the legislature after approval from both the House and the Senate.
However, other countries celebrate their doctors on a different day than we do, often to recognize an important physician from their country. Spain, Cuba, and Argentina celebrate on December 3 to commemorate Dr. Carlos Juan Finlay’s birthday, who famously identified mosquitos as the cause of yellow fever. India celebrates on July 1 to commemorate the birthday of Dr. B. C. Roy, who also sadly died on that date.

National I Am In Control Day – March 30, 2022~U.S.
National I am in Control Day is observed annually on March 30. The day is commemorated for two reasons. First, to encourage people to take control of their lives. Second, there was an assassination attempt made on the president of the U.S. on March 30, 1981. The then-Secretary of State Alexander Haig took control of the situation and, while answering questions in a press briefing uttered the famous words, “I am in control.”
HISTORY OF NATIONAL I AM IN CONTROL DAY
This day motivates us to take back control of our lives and decide on our actions wisely. While walking outside the Washington Hilton Hotel, President Reagan was shot by John Hinckley. The bullet was fired using a 0.22 caliber pistol. The president had completed addressing a meeting when six shots were fired at him. Attempts were also made on three of the president’s attendants — Secretary James Brady, Secret Service agent Timothy McCarthy, and Thomas Delahanty.
After the assassination attempt, John Hinckley was captured while President Reagan was rushed to the hospital. In a press briefing, Alexander Haig tried to calm the media and the press by assuring them that the government was functioning well in the absence of the president and the vice president. He declared that he was in control of the government decisions until the vice president returned.
People considered the words of Alexander Haig as controversial. They thought that he was trying to take the authority and trying to take the place of the president. Alexander Haig later clarified his statement and declared that he had no such intentions and he was simply taking responsibility for the executive branch of the government until President Reagan and the vice president returned.
The room where the press briefing took place has been called the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room since then. James Brady was one of President Reagan’s attendants and was injured severely in the shooting.

National Pencil Day is on March 30 and it is the perfect moment to explore these old writing tools. This simple instrument has meant so much to mankind. It allows people to express themselves, helps them find their creativity, and supports all kinds of scribbles and doodles. Did you know that one pencil can write up to 45,000 words? Pencils have been used for ages, and have gone through many changes in terms of their design, but have you ever wondered who came up with the brilliant idea of attaching an eraser to a pencil? Well, Hymen Lipman was the man behind this great discovery and was responsible for making our lives easier. We celebrate this day to honor this superb creation.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL PENCIL DAY
Who would have thought that a graphite core closed inside a wooden casing could perform such numerous and extremely important tasks?
Before the invention of the pencil as we know it, people still wrote, only, they used things like a fine brush of camel hair or the stylus (ancient Romans). Back in the 1st century B.C., the Greek poet Philip of Thessaloníki wrote about ‘leaden writing instruments’.
Pencils are one of the first writing tools and they are known to have originated in the 16th century when the world discovered graphite. This crystallized form of carbon was found somewhere around 1565 or even earlier, near Keswick, England. Legend says a storm uprooted a tree here, and clinging to the tree roots was a shiny black substance — graphite! There is no evidence that this is how graphite was discovered; what we do know is that this site was transformed into a commercial graphite mine a few decades later. This is around the time people began using a piece of graphite wrapped in a string to write.
18th-century German chemist A. G. Werner was responsible for naming it ‘graphite’, from the Greek word ‘graphein,’ which means ‘to write’. In the early days after the discovery, local shepherds were the only ones using graphite to mark their sheep. Because it looked so much like lead, people would call it plumbago — the Latin word for lead, i.e., ‘plumbus’ — or even ‘black lead’. This connotation stuck to graphite, and consequently, pencils too.
After Swiss naturalist Conrad Gessner published his drawing of a strip of graphite inside a tube of wood, the ‘pencil’ began to spread throughout Europe. Britain still had a monopoly over pencil making, and graphite, at this time. By 1794, however, France was cut off from this supply of pencils due to their war with Britain. Thus, French engineer Nicolas-Jacques Conté was responsible for inventing ‘Crayons Conté’, which was low-quality graphite mixed with clay, shaped into rods, and baked. Continental pencil makers no longer needed to rely on the British for pencils.
Conté’s invention spurred more innovation in the world of pencil making. Germany, France, America — each country conducted their own experiments, and pencil making became commonplace around the globe. These pencils were great, but the wood around was not. In fact, it was often of low quality. Soon, people hit upon the idea of painting pencils to mask the quality of the wood. Only the fanciest pencils went unpainted. And then, at the 1889 World’s Fair in Paris, an Austro-Hungarian pencil company unveiled a new luxury pencil — which was painted yellow. It was named Koh-I-Noor after the largest and best diamond in the world. Because of this, yellow came to be associated with quality, and many other pencil makers picked up this color to adorn their pencils. Even today, the U.S. paints pencils and other writing instruments yellow to represent quality.
And what about, the mistakes people made while writing? Before there were erasers, people would rub out mistakes using balled-up lumps of old bread. Then, in 1770, a clergyman-chemist named Joseph Priestley noticed the gum harvested from trees in South America was very good at removing pencil marks. Because people had to rub to remove the marks, this gum was named ‘rubber’.
Germany gave birth to the mass-production of pencils, with companies like Faber-Castell, Staedtler, and Lyra that produced pencils in bulk. In Massachusetts, the Dixon Ticonderoga Company began manufacturing pencils in the 19th century. By the late 19th century, pencils were widely being used in the U.S. The most famously used wood for pencils was red cedar because of its aroma and quality.
On March 30, 1858, Hymen Lipman patented the ‘modern pencil.’ It was a wooden graphite pencil with a rubber eraser attached, which he later sold to Joseph Reckendorfer for $100,000.
Since then, the manufacturing of pencils hasn’t stopped and there are billions of pencils being made and sold around the world. There are so many types of pencils including graphite pencils, charcoal pencils, grease pencils, and watercolor pencils.
