How absolutely horrible! I can't even imagine what Pennmom is going through. My thoughts are with her and her husband and my hope is that they are able to resume a semblance of their lives after this tragedy. How do you get over this?

She has not told me...last I heard it was not known metmichallica, She has only popped in twice for a quick message as she doesn't even have her own computer yet...and is simply not up to talking about it. (which is perfectly understandable..really she is still in shock and in such grief) I will always ask her permission on what she tells me...but promise I will keep woodseys up to date when there is something she says is ok to pass on.

Yes, I understand that you always get permission on the stuff you tell us which is only right.
My last home burnt down a few years after we left it. It took the mortgage company years to sell. It had problems and it was old. Someone bought it, they were there for like a day and it burnt down. No electric on so they could rule that out. I think they burnt it down for the insurance.

Those pictures are devastating, thank heavens pennmom and her hubby were not upstairs in bed when the fire started, and that they are both safe and well.. As bad as things are, they could have been so much worse. Thanks again joybelle for your updates, and do let pennmom know we are all thinking of them.

I,m so sorry for Pen, and for the loss of Loki! How sad! I can imagine, she feels so much grief and is in shock! Poor Pen! I mean loosing all things is horrible, it really is, but I guess as long as your loved once are safe, (incl. Pets) you can heal faster, even you lose a lot of things, which are dearly to you! But too lose her dog in this house, is really, really hard! I send her all the strength I got, and if I can help so,ehow let me know! In the meantime let her try to heal and hope, she has a lot of support around her in real life! This is really hard!

smitty189, galaxy, Jo, metmichallica, joybelle, kasie, sandy, cyril50, todge, sonia (username @eskarina), moni, frezo, sevensailsI thought I'd give everyone an update: We finally received a check from the insurance company...February 2nd will be exactly 7 months after the fire! :o Our plans now will be to demolish what's left of the house, probably in the spring. The estimates so far are on average $30,000 for demolishing & hauling the debris. I say we get creative and have a Dozer Party... rent a bulldozer and offer the neighbors free beer with each pickup truck of debris they haul away, we'll save $29,000 Rolling Along

Can we guess? Nothing worse than the Nosferatu from 1922.
And, yes, I have always wanted to drive a bulldozer through a house.

Glad that you're finally seeing some light at the end of your tunnel. Glad to rent a bulldozer but could I have wine instead of beer lol (there's one in every crowd). I know you will never forget your loss of Loki but I hope you find some comfort in making new memories

pennmom - it's disgraceful how long it took to get the check - hope it covers all of your expenses! obviously nothing covers the emotional loss and distress and I wish you all the best for the future The insurance company was supposed to be paying us $4800 a month for ALE (additional living expenses to pay rent/mortgage, buy living necessities like toothbrushes, linens, clothing, dishes, etc.) They kept saying this person, or that person was supposed to be cutting the check, but month after month went by and the checks never came! They would say, I'll have so-in-so take charge of this matter, again nothing would come of it. We began getting frustrated because we purchased a new house in September and now have a mortgage again (old house had been paid off several years ago) and we still needed furniture, cleaning supplies, winter clothes, and every thing to live day to day because we literally only had the clothes we were wearing that day and nothing else, so we were maxing out our credit cards! I don't know how anyone would have been able to survive this long if they were struggling to begin with or didn't have large amounts of credit and or credit cards, if this had happened to any of our kids just starting out, they would have been bankrupt at this point! My youngest son finally put his foot down and said it was ridiculous we haven't gotten the ALE checks per our policy so we got all of the key players from the corporate Insurance company on the phone and added our local agent as well. We told them we still have yet to receive a single $4800 ALE check for the months of July, August, September, October, November, or December, and that we were out of money (not to mention having to buy Christmas presents and at the very least purchase a tree!) They all started making excuses like "I thought so-in-so took care of that last month?" So-in-so spoke up and said "we thought it would just be easier to include the ALE in one lump sum (easier for whom?) along with the house policy payout" (the ALE is supposed to be a separate policy paid monthly as a "continuity of life" payment to allow the policy holder to continue the lifestyle they had before the devastation, including housing, paid monthly until the house policy is paid out. IF you immediately sign a contract with a builder of your choice, the ALE payments will continue until construction is complete and you can move in) When everyone was done pointing fingers at each other, my son spoke up and stated who he was to the insurance agents and said that the [Law firm name withheld] Law Firm was reviewing the case and was prepared to represent his mother & father. Our local agent, Todd, immediately spoke up and said, "I don't think your parents need to go to the expense of hiring a law firm, we'll get this straightened out" My son replied, "I don't think you understand what I'm telling you, I am a corporate attorney at the [Law firm name withheld] Law Firm, there will be NO expenses incurred by my parents for representation, and you have had 6 months to straighten this out, so I will only ask you ONE TIME, I never ask twice, please cut an ALE check for the money you owe my parents for the months July through December, within 24 hours" (dead silence followed this comment lol) ...Surprise! The ALE check was deposited to our account the following morning bright and early, two days before Christmas! Rolling Along A few days ago, the house policy was paid out as well, as far as the house itself, to rebuild the exact house we had including HVAC, water heaters, windows, gutters, upgraded cabinets and countertops, everything structure-wise of a house (not the contents inside like furniture or decorations). This doesn't mean you have to rebuild an exact replica, it's just how they base the payout costs, and it's extremely precise, down to the exact amount of nails & screws required! The policy for the Outside Structure (landscaping, trees, grass/sod, hot tub, pool, detached garage, outdoor furniture, decorations, etc.) and the Contents Policy (appliances, furniture, clothing, dishes, paintings, decorations, etc.) is still pending. We have to plug in all our receipts (or get quotes/receipts for replacement cost) for every single personal content, down to a simple toothbrush, one at a time, into a portal thru the insurance company...it's a pain in the butt and it's not easy to remember every thing you owned, especially when your receipts were destroyed too, so my suggestion to everyone is to take a few minutes out of your day to go through your belongings and take pictures so you can refer to them if something devastating were to happen...it doesn't always happen to the "other guy" Rough Day

So sorry you have had to deal with this b*******. Insurance companies are the pits. Every time I have had to deal with one I come out of it wishing for a gun. But I never had an experience to compare with your tragedy.
