I've always lived on acreage so I've never had to pass out candy. Our new house is in a neighborhood that actually closes all the roads down and everyone goes all out with decorations.
Since I've never "participated" in this ritual I need help figuring out protocols for this event!

Sorry pennmom I only went out disguised once and I was an under ten at the time. Never had anyone knock at the door thankfully.

pennmom, Didn't you take your boys trick or treating. Not so different even if you're on the other side of the door. Nudity is strongly discouraged, mostly by the cops who will arrest you in a New York minute. The moms will have cell phones and won't hesitate to report you. To my knowledge, as long as you don't ask them to vote for their favorite candy, ID is not required even in Ohio. By all means, test the candy first but that doesn't mean licking it and then passing out what you didn't like. One piece of candy is fine unless it's candy corn. Might as well just throw out the candy corn now and cut out the middle man. Candy or money is the only option unless you want your house egged or TPed. No kid likes getting salad on Halloween. Even if the trick or treaters are old enough to shave or have bigger boobs than you do, give them candy. They're the ones with the eggs and toilet paper so you don't want to piss them off. No throwing. Trick or treaters are not wide receivers and it's hard to run for a pass when you're in a princess costume. Business cards should be fine but never give trick or treaters booze. That's probably illegal in Ohio, too, although the accompanying parent might appreciate a cocktail. You can scare them a little but not enough to make them cry. It's just bad form. This is not an exchange program so you can't take their Reeces and give them candy corn. Now I can hardy wait for your report tomorrow!

LOL..I picked 'is a birthday suit appropriate'..cos I saw a joke yesterday...
'I always answer the door to trick or treaters naked'..and here we go again..here's two of them again dressed as policemen. Rolling Along
I actually didn't have anyone knock on my door last night...as it is not quite as entrenched here in Australia as in the USA..basically we just started copying about a decade ago..cos we love dressing up lol. Most parents keep it amongst themselves very locally and some municipalities have started putting on a haunted house for kids to visit.

We don't do Halloween, but we have Sint Martinus. Is almost the same, only not dressed up. St Martinus is in Germany on November 10th and in the Netherlands on November 11th (which is also the start of the Mardi Gras Season) Wikipedia fact: Saint Martin's Day, also called the Funeral of Saint Martin, Martinstag or Martinmas, as well as Old Halloween and Old Hallowmas Eve, is the Funeral day of Saint Martin of Tours (else Martin le Miséricordieux) and is celebrated on 11 November each year.

Always looked at Halloween as the candy reward for the night before traditionally known in my old neighborhood as "Mischief Night" and yes it's just what it sounds like. When my kids were little we went all out decorating and had a blast with carved pumpkins lining the walkway and ghosts and witches on brooms and a cauldron with steam

Update: apparently drinking IS allowed, some parents actually passed out White Claws or bottles of beer (no I did not see anything on tap---note to self "cheap-a@# neighbors) to the parents. I've never seen so many drunk adults riding Golf Carts, no wonder why they shut down all the streets in the neighborhood-it isn't to keep the kids safe, it's to keep the drunk golf cart drivers from escaping...who knew Next year I will be more prepared! PS: where is moni I need a recipe for an alcoholic beverage that produces smoke so I can put it in a GIANT bubbling cauldron PSS: where can I buy a real cauldron? Should I make a poll to find out if I can buy one at the local store or if I have to go to Salem?
