Finally got started, and in short order became completely flummoxed. First it took a while to figure out how to navigate and even bolluxed up so badly had to restart and do the tutorial in order to learn that inventory items don't show until you shift. Did anyone else want to strangle the squirrel. Still a big BIG THANKS for all the posts and Jo's tip on walkthroughs ya'll have given me some good tips to get started. My usual mouse madness strategy will not work here .

The "I" works for inventory, too. Just pressed it because that's the key that was usually used.

Well, I have 5 hours and 41 minutes on the clock. I don't know where I am in Episode One but bad has turned to worse and Wallace is standing in the kitchen {Spoiler} in his underwear. I spent a good 30 minutes trying to brute force a solution to a problem and finally decided it must require a more subtle resolution which is evading my little brain at the moment.
So I'm done for the night and will have at it again, more fidgeting, tomorrow.

Well, dont know about the rest of y'all, but I'm about to give up on this game entirely. I find it too frustrating that the developers had too limited a plan for how to make things work & insist on my figuring out their bizarre logic and refusing to use MY bizarre logic. Also hate that conversations appear to require random repeats till you get folks to say necessary things. Some examples: - In making eggs, hammer to get eggs into pan seemed to fail till I applied the toast to the hammer. But that had nothing to do with releasing the egg, since I still had the intact toast later on
- Game would not let me give the eggs to Wallace until after I'd given him the toast, for no obvious (to me) reason
- Trying to get the battery from the Sniffer, I wanted to hold up my cheese from Paneer to attract him to the window so I could extract his battery. Instead, the game threw my cheese under the cot
- Then Paneer would not give me an opportunity to get more cheese, nor would he open his store to me so I could get more tea (which it looked like he had in his window)
- When I found gorgonzola to try to force the Sniffer to look at the policeman, the game would not allow the policeman to take it, NOR would it allow me to throw the cheese to the bars of the cell so it would "look" like my Sniffer was looking at the policeman (though I know from my experience with the other piece of cheese, that it understood the process of throwing
- When I finally broke down & looked at the walkthru Jo pointed to & saw how to get the General(?) to loosen up on his energy bars, it also said to look at his pictures, but numerous attempts to talk to him provided no occasion where he showed me his pictures...till one magically did, with no obvious action on my part to cause the sudden change!
[/li] [/ul]
Oh, and the "map" looks like it ought to allow me to fast travel between points (and in one case did exactly that), but in general I cannot get it to do so. Overall, challenge is one thing. Needless infliction of frustration is quite another. I'll perhaps give this game one more chance after dinner, but at the moment I'm doubting it is worth the hassle.

lurkercat, Two points: 1. Gaming should be fun. 2. Life is too short for that much frustration. Sometimes a game is just not one's cup of tea. I felt the same way about the Lion's Song, another group play game elsewhere. Hated everything about it. Didn't finish. Don't feel guilty. Broom the damn thing if you need to!

My usual mouse madness strategy will not work here . If you use your usual mouse madness strategy, you'll just have Wallace walking up and down the stairs and in and out doors. Uncooperative git! I keep forgetting to use the WASD keys and off Wallace goes in the wrong direction. I kept tying to click on the blender in the kitchen and Wallace went out the back door at least 6 times before I got it right. It's been a long time since I played a WASD game.

When I first started my reaction was meh but the more I play and get used to the way the game rocks the more I like it and it is funny but frustrating. Am presently fighting the giant bees (had a bit of a roll but am truly stuck again)

I went on the Steam and GOG discussions to see if anyone found a way to bind the arrow keys but, alas, that is not to be.
But it did find a clarification of the "Hints" at GOG.
They are included in the dialogue. After I thought about this for bit, I realized that it's true. In the word game sequence with Mrs. Gabberley, she does give us a broad hint as to what we should do. We just have to find the most fitting words. And we have to pay attention to what the characters are telling us. Go to Settings in the main menu. Click the Hint indicator until you are satisfied. "Often" is the highest setting. I choose "Often".
You can access the Graphics Settings by clicking on the bottom where it says...you guessed it!..... Graphics Settings.
I just used the default, shown above, because it's working fine on my computer.
I think you may have to restart the game if you made changes because I changed "Subtitles" to "On" while I was playing yesterday but never got "Subtitles" but I've got them today.
Also read this: It contains some important hints about where to go in the game to find a little action.
Controls are simple: Mouse: Move Cursor Left Click: Select/Interact Right Click: Exit/Skip Dialogue Middle Click: Select Inventory (can also be scrolled) Shift and I: Also Opens Inventory Escape: Main menu
Keypad: WASD or THE ARROW KEYS Move Character

Poor Gromit! He was suddenly deformed but only in the dining room. He snapped back as soon as he was out in the hall. {Spoiler}

Jo, What did you mean by "bind the arrow keys"? My arrow keys work fine in place of the WASD. Did you mean something else? Also, thanks for the reminder on Hints. I've only got it set to "sometimes" and clearly that is not nearly enough for my frustrated little mind. Poor little deformed Gromit. Well, that's what comes from eating the energy bars no doubt (not like I'm anywhere near seeing if he actually eats his).

Well, that's what comes from eating the energy bars no doubt (not like I'm anywhere near seeing if he actually eats his). !I am well and truly a certifiable idiot!
I thought, clearly not using many brain cells, that navigation was only possible in the game using the WASD keys. I never even tried the arrow keys and it should have been a clue when I used the "I" key to trigger the inventory.
You have saved me so much uncoordinated fumbling, lurkercat , so much!
This is why we need each other in a group play. Or should I say I need you to put me on the proper path.
(Sometimes in a game, you can change the key assignments in the setting.)
The hnits are very broad and so still leave you a lot to figure out.
ETA: And you can use the "Enter" key to left click an item. For example, I just walked Gromet up to the kitchen door. It highlighted. I hit "Enter" and the door opened. Et Voila! Another time saver!

Trying to kill the giant bees and am pretty sure I know WHAT to do but not HOW to do it. Getting very frustrated and hear Gameboomers calling my name but I will resist the temptation

Um I didn't think to ask if we are doing all the adventures for this GPG. The queen finally got tickled so I'm downloading the next. Sometimes this game is so frustrating but unlike the Room, it has some comic relief.

Ummm, frustrating as the logic is in this game....can anyone approach the fact, without a HEFTY dose of despair, that there are still THREE other chapters of this madness yet to do...assuming we ever manage to dispatch ALL the bees and save the day in the first chapter (and assuming this chapter is done when the bees are gone and there is not a follow-on "but" to be dealt with)?? Game is cute, but WAY too convoluted.
Edit to add: Saw good2bqueen , smitty189 , and Jo 's comments as I posted. CONGRATS on making it through the 1st chapter. Not sure I'll make it, and definitely could not have gotten even as close as I am without Gameboomers! I prefer games I have a chance of figuring out on my own!

%$#@&^% ^%$#@*& HELP!!!! Could someone who has captured the bees at Mr. Paneer's shop give me a hand? Grrrr. {Spoiler}I've set the frying pan on top of the papers, set it, & had Gromit shake the pipe to wet the bees. They fly to the newspaper shop, but immediately come back. I've tried repeatedly wetting them, but the $#&%# constable keeps insisting on blabbering his whole long speech each time in between. The yellow awning has already deployed & wont roll back up again. I tried planning to put my yellow flowers on the frying pan, hoping to hit the bees when the frying pan springs, but suddenly the yellow flowers are no longer in my inventory (sheesh!). Is there something else I need to be doing? Or is the fact that the yellow awning is already down mean that I've missed the opportunity to deploy it to get the bees & I'm just roundly screwed (ala not capturing the badger when he first appeared & having to restart the game entirely to get ahold of him?). I'm certainly not going to restart at this point, but I'm totally flummoxed at why I cannot get the bees. The walkthrough made this step sound so easy. What am I missing???

lurkercat , Have you gotten Mrs. Gabberly to close up shop? She has to close the shutters and go upstairs before your frying pan/drainpipe will work.
Edit: We're all posting at the same time. The frying pan only runs for so long and then you have to rewind it. It took me a couple of tries to make it in time.

Jo, Thanks, but I DID all that. The problem is the bees dont get captured. I THINK the problem is that the game prematurely extended the yellow awning and now will not let it undeploy so it can redeploy.... but that leaves me just plain stuck. I've tried repeating multiple times and it never works. Only other thing I can think of is that there is some time constraint in {Spoiler}setting the trap vs tapping the drainpipe but that doesnt seem likely either. I'm suspecting another badger-style glitch in processing order. I almost thought I'd hit another when tackling the bees in the basement, but that magically worked out. In that one, {Spoiler}I hit a balky situation trying to get the inventory to display so I could get the sleep-inducing record. As a result, the game sort of "timed out" the activity and the bees attacked Gromit & forced him away from the record player before he could make the switch. I figured since my Sniffer buddy had already eaten the cheese I'd dropped down next to the player from the door in the yard, I'd have to go back to Paneer's & get another piece of cheese, but the game would not let me pick up another one. So, just went back to the basement & turned out I still had the cheese piece I'd used to bring the Sniffer to Gromit (and interestingly, the Sniffer came back out of the hive to get it, not his original place in the basement, and I got another chance to get the record in place. Happily on the retry, my inventory was not balky & I could get the record changed before the bees forced Gromit away again. But back in town, I can't seem to get the yellow awning to redeploy to capture the bees from Paneer's.
