Since more and more of us are playing on Steam, I would love to have you all there as my friends, too (so I can stalk your library and wishlist - bruhahaha) So here is my friend code for all: 1218969991
Also, Keepsake has other resources on its store page, even forum discussions (he he) I've clicked on the "website" link, but it seems their website is taken down by now. All other links work, though.

Ready to go in this morning. I've decided that I'm going to take Zak for a walk. Maybe he can coax a clue out of Mustavio. One thing that I inadvertently stumbled upon is that when I am just sitting staring at the screen because I don't know what to do, Lydia and Zak will start to talk spontaneously and that's how I learned that Zak was a teacher's familiar.

Stopped in to see if anyone else was having trouble getting to the basement. I went back for that ladder twice because it would have made my life easier. Thanks for all the info. I would never have thought to look at the store page for assistance. I just know I've wandered around aimlessly as much as my mental health can bear so I'm joining smitty189 and getting help wherever I can; so there.

Has anyone figured out what the green "1"s are that show up on the map at the machine room & the Academy waterway? I'm thinking it probably indicates there is a way to get directly from one to the other...though not a way I've figured out how to use yet (got a vague suspicion, but that's all at the moment).

I would never have thought to look at the store page for assistance. I just know I've wandered around aimlessly as much as my mental health can bear so I'm joining smitty189 and getting help wherever I can; so there. After I took Zak for a walk and didn't learn anything new from Mustavio, I went back into the academy and started over going to the left staircase first. Then I tracked my location on the map. I ended up finding a way into the garden, having my first vision, finding the water pump and, just now, finding the basement. There are staircases beyond the caretaker's office that I missed. Tracking the map helped a lot because I became more oriented instead of just careening off in any direction. I certainly have to pay attention in this game and my usual method of just roaming around doesn't work. I think I need to start writing down landmarks. I did recognize the rose window and knew I'd been there before so changed directions. By the time I quit last night, I was ready to use a walkthrough today but I feel like I've made a little progress.
lurkercat, have you restored the electricity yet? I've mapped the various devices but I can't see a pattern. All I want to know is if you found a clue somewhere because it's looking like a walkthrough for me.

I played this game a couple years ago and it is right up in my top few adventure game plays ever. I don't remember much about navigating (but I used the walkthrough when I had to) but I will remember the story forever.

OMG, I found a clue - a real clue. But I can't remember where the thing it's used for is! Maybe the basement. Should have written it down.
I've got a question. On the map it now shows a dotted line between the Elvander Glade and the Elvander Forest. I'm assuming that I have to do something to get it navigable? If you know, don't tell me what it is - just if it's possible.

This open, non-linear world will be the death of me. Found my way (rather easily) to Jo's glade...without ever having encountered several other things that she had. And keep finding new things off places I'd already visited & "thought" I'd explored thoroughly. I definitely should have been keeping notes AND drawing my own map, 'cause I keep discovering new things (none of which help of course!) and keep making mental notes (promptly forgotten) to go off and explore path B when I go off down path A at a crossroads...only to be involved in multiple choices after that. So far, all I've got is a ton of things I dont have the necessary "resources" for...though no clue what those resources might be. I love (not) Hint's telling me "useful information was just acquired". Hmmm, guess "useful" means different things to different people!

I would trade my first born child for a jump map. It would probably turn out to be The Ransom of Red Chief all over again because this deal is bound to make her cranky. This could work.
ETA: I fiddled with those darn devices forever and then I ended up using a walkthrough to turn the power back on. It still made no sense to me at all because I couldn't figure out how it related to the diagrams on the devices or how the circuit worked. I may not be smart enough for this game.

To turn the power back on without walkthrough takes a bit of studying all the diagrams - after a while it does make sense. I think, we are spoiled with features in the newer adventure games, and I wouldn't say we are not smart enough for this one, but we perhaps rather impatient with it; afteral we cannot just skip the fiendish puzzles, we do need to solve them to advance. (and I just remembered why did it take that long for me to finish this game: there was NO walkthrough)
Back tracking (running around) is part of the game - as new knowledge is added parts of the school are opening, and sometimes it happens ON THE WAY from one place to the other - jumping would cut those parts out.
And, I'm sorry to say, it will get even more complicated {Spoiler} when after solving the whole map a second layer of the school will open - this game is tremendous fun with lots of twists!

I'll take your word for the electrical devices making sense. I mapped all of them but couldn't quite figure out which one fit in where on the diagrams. And then, after consulting the walkthrough, I didn't even need to use all of them which confused me more.
I agree that running around is a vital part of an adventure game. I rarely even use the jump map in a HOPA game. But I couldn't find the damned basement again probably because I've been at this game all day on and off and I'm tired. I finally had to follow the UHS guide step by step to find it. Made it to the basement and quit for the night. And my daughter said to forget trading her for anything. She's not going. She always was a stubborn child. The puzzles in this game, other than the electricity, have been very easy. And Zak adds a lot of information while just walking around.
I am enjoying this game a lot. And I am actually looking forward to the student area opening up. Lots of mysteries to solve there. I would have played it for the first time 2006 when it came out and I remember very little detail. So it's like a new game.
I've had three visions and passed the first test.
I'm going to bed.

Jo, What I found odd about the machines was that the numbers on each of the gears did not mean what I thought they did (or should!). After seeing the developer's "intended" meaning for them, I went back and reset all mine to be in accordance and it all worked...though seemed a really odd way to define the meaning of the numbers. If the only aim was to get power from point A to point B, does sort of make sense that you would not need to use ALL the gears if some other path allowed that to happen. Probably just our "training" from other games that you need to use "everything". No need in the real world for that to be true...so why should Keepsake be forced to do anything different?!

Am truly enjoying this game, the plot, the characters, even the mindless (on my part) wandering. My only gripe is that I have to save it contantly or it freezes, that's frustrating but workable. I'm at the minotaur game and decided to call it a night but will jump back in tomorrow

I finally found Mustavio's wine barrels after over an hour of roaming around the basement and running my cursor along the perimeter of every scene hoping to trigger a hot spot so I'd have another area to search. Hot spots in this game can be tricky. This is a big basement. Now I'm wondering what else I missed. I will use a hint to see if talking to Mustavio is the next step or if there is still more to do in the basement.
Is that cheating?

Regarding the machine activation...would have answered queries in the comments where they were posed, but can't do spoilers there. And BTW, I did NOT figure out the developer's intent on my own - trusty UHS told me in one of their layered hints. (I'd already figured out all the hints up to that one on my own, but NEVER would have stumbled on that one with my own little brain). Thought I "solved" the puzzle when I first discovered the machines early in the game, except I assumed the signal came in at the top and exited at the bottom and assumed the numbers matched the direction I wanted the signal to go - neither assumption turning out to be correct, of course. {Spoiler - Intent of numbers in machine puzzle}The Roman numeral indicators on each gear do NOT mark direction. Instead they mark "path"...you are supposed to choose the number that occupies the angle between the incoming signal and where you want the outgoing signal to go. Duh - who woulda guessed???

Boy, you guys are way ahead of me. I'm just at the safe in the caretaker's office and also hopelessly trying to remember where I saw the matrix of gears problem so I can go back and see if I now have all the pre-reqs to let me solve it (so far, it is in none of the places I "thought" I encountered it). Have only had 2 visions - and Nathaniel is a real jerk. And I'll be so disappointed when (if) Zak doesnt turn into a real dragon at the end.

lurkercat , Don't worry I'm still behind you. Haven't gotten into the caretaker's office yet. It's our anniversary this weekend, today actually and the husband has made plans so I will be running behind for a while and I guess I'll have to keep the old guy for another year. Darn it, he's messing with my game time!
