I ran across this and decided to post it now so we have it at the beginning of this thread.
The Book of Unwritten Tales Gameplay:
This is a third person point and click game.
The main menu has continue game, save game (later after playing for a while), new game, load game, settings and quit game.
The main menu is accessed during gameplay by the ESC key.
The setting has screen resolution, graphics quality, antialiasing, music volume, sound effects, speech volume and subtitles selections.
To save, click on empty saving slot, enter a name and click on 'save'. Saved game can be overwritten.
The inventory bar is at bottom of the screen. Some items that are not needed are removed at end of a chapter. Items can be combined by clicking one item over another item. Right click will return the picked item to the inventory bar. Combinable items are indicated by a red cursor and message seen at bottom edge of screen. Right click of an item also describes the item.
To switch main character; click on the picture of the other character seen at top left of the screen.
Hints: A dialogue or cutscene can be skipped by clicking on the skip (arrow-door) icon.
Double clicking on an exit (door) icon will transfer to next location immediately.
The ESC key also skips a dialogue.
The spacebar key shows all the active spots in the screen.
Talk to characters often; they might have new info.
Examine active spots several times and check the descriptions of the items picked up.
Antialiasing: (in computer graphics) a technique used to add greater realism to a digital image by smoothing jagged edges on curved lines and diagonals. Whether you activate this or not depends on the image you have on your screen. If it is blurry or distorted, try it to see if the image becomes clearer. It will slow your frame rate somewhat which may not be a problem. You can always turn it off again. It won't be a huge difference in graphic quality but it might tidy it up a bit.

Just downloaded the game & brought it up to make sure it ran ok. Found the screen flickered so I had to go into the downloaded directory, right click the bout.exe file & select "Properties". Under the Compatibility tab, set "disable fullscreen optimizations". This eliminated the flickering for me. No clue why it is needed, but I have had to do a similar thing on a few random BFG games, so just tossing the info out there in case anyone else gets flickering when they bring up this game. I'm running Windows 10 Pro, 64-bit.

Rats! Out of state guests spending the day so probably can't start until tomorrow. BUT they are bringing a new week old baby to meet me so the game goes on the back burner. Play slowly and I'll try to catch up. The game looks wonderful. I appreciate the game play technical tip so I don't feel like such a newbie when getting started. Have fun

joybelle, I think, you're the most advanced in this game so far. I still have slime issues.

What a curious and fun game! Lots of attention to detail AND interesting diversions (like objects to examine that have NO usefulness in the game and are just there to add atmosphere, color, and occasional humor....duh, if the gnome's chair tells me one more time that it is "still just a chair", I may strangle it. I actually had a use for it at one point, and it still insisted it was just a chair and refused to cooperate with my intended usage (which turned out not to be needed anyhow)!). Have encountered a few oddities & figured I'd document them in case it helps anyone else: - When returning to the tavern for elven ale, suddenly got bright orange triangles slashed on my screen & flickering began again. Clearly a glitch, but only affected the graphics & I was able to continue progressing through the scene. Persisted till after I saved & exited the game, then were gone on subsequent resumptions
- Have found Jo 's pointer about the space bar flagging hotspots to be absolutely invaluable (thanks Jo!!). Did notice at least once, though, where a valid hot spot was not highlighted...though it did turn up later.
{Spoiler}I'd neglected to pick up the fertilizer when 1st in its room. Later on, when I used the space bar to highlight hotspots, its position was NOT flagged. No clue why not, but after I consulted the walkthrough & discovered where to look for it, my next use of the space bar DID highlight the spot. Hmmm, how do you suppose the game knew I'd found out it was lying to me??
- Encountered a curious circumstance while hunting for
{Spoiler}the cog : Absolutely NO hotspots highlighted anywhere in any of the scenes. Turned out to be perfectly valid - one needed to "do" something, without needing any new inventory. Guess I'd expected the game to highlight the spot I needed to do something "at", but can see why perhaps it thought I should be capable of figuring it out without added help...tough love, eh?! - So far, the mummy is, hands down, my definite favorite character!
- Had a hard time understanding why the game refused my "brilliant ideas" for distracting the brewmaster, though admit its selected distraction was delightedly droll.
{Spoiler}My brilliant ideas: I wanted to dump the pot of water in his lap, forcing him to get up and go change clothes; also wanted to use the pot of water to douse the fire in the fireplace, forcing him to get up to restart it. Knew I could always refill the pot if it were needed later. Neither plan worked of course.

Had the same confrontation with the chair. Tried to use it so many times that Wilbur finally said "Fine it's a horse". Had a few times when Wilbur made me feel like a dunce with comments along the line of why would I do that. But it is fun and challenging and lurkercat is correct about the space bar, owe Jo a drink for that one. Got to get Ivo to the hidden cellar and Wilbur to the Arch Mage. Wonder if the importance of the ring is an homage to Tolkien.

Okay, got my duties done and I'm going in!
If you're using a Steam walkthrough, it's hard to do "find on this page" which is what I like to do so I don't read what could be a spoiler., here is a GameBoomer walkthrough which is where I got the gameplay instructions. That is one of the worst run-on sentences I've ever written!

Well, you'll be pleased to know there is still honor among the guards for the Arch Mage. Did my best to have Wilbur try to bribe his way into seeing the Arch Mage with his bag of gold, only to be turned down flat. (Sheesh, I knew I should have brought a bag of bananas instead!). Meanwhile, happy to see the rat the robot chased way back at the tavern is still alive and well...er, well, sort of! Still a very cute game and even though I normally HATE conversations with game characters, this game definitely makes them fun. Wish I'd done a save before answering the mummy's questions, so I could have seen his reactions to the "wrong" answers. I'm too obsessive to have risked answering them wrong...but I really do want to know how those would have turned out. Started out the game just "cutting to the chase" and only selecting dialog options that allowed me to make progress, but now I'm choosing a number of the dumb choices, just to enjoy the tangents they send me off on.

Finally getting started. Snuggling that teeny tiny baby gives one hope for the future. I really didn't want to let her go home. But a new game to play is not a bad thing. Going in.

I just played for a little while yesterday up to Wilbur in the tavern then went to bed. Today, Wilbur has gotten all of his gear and I'm trying to help Granddad find some stuff. I love Granddad with his wonky leg and penchant for hyperbole. I am so impressed with the meticulous attention to detail in this game. The characters never break character and the voice acting is superb. More laughs per minute than any game I've played in a long time. Just broke for lunch and I'm going back in!

I've gotten up to the Showman Willy (where is the bloody card half) But this game is hilarious I was with the mummy and I am still agog with all the Star Wars and Lord of the Rings references. I had accidentally purchased the 2nd book and that turned out to a great mistake as I'll be playing it soon enough

OK so I made a big goof in the bag of gold problem {Spoiler} Don't give the pile of gold to Master Marcus before you get the mage's robe and wand or you will have to go back and get another one

I can imagine that this game was really inspired by Tolkien's Unfinished Tales. There are just simply too many similarities. I'm enjoying this game, although I'm not really keen about the large amount of conversation. But, I did learn, that having some parts of conversation repeated spares me to reach out to a walkthrough - like stating repeatedly how dwarfs are proud of their beard insinuated that I will need to do something with that beard on one point, lol. I also found the voice over very enjoyable, and I'm kind of happy about the lack of mini games/puzzles, which makes this game resembling more to a real adventure.
I have the Book of Unwritten Tales 2, as well - perhaps I won't stop after finishing the first.

When Wilbur is at the town gates, the guard asks him what his name is and one of the response is (I'm paraphrasing) "My name is Wilbrush Wetterwood and I want to be a pirate!" I may not have gotten the name exactly right but it was something equally silly. I was laughing too hard to write it down. Grandad stealing Yoda's line made me laugh, too.
I may be mistaken but isn't this scene similar to something from Loom, too?

Aarrrggghhhh! I HATE switching between Ivo and Wilbur - and all the walking around they do before being ready to use when the switch is done. Even worse, though, a piece of my inventory has mysteriously disappeared and (as I consulted the walkthrough when I ran out of ideas at one point), apparently I need that very item of inventory to progress! And to make matters worse, I've just been using the autosave slot whenever I exit and the last time I used a named slot was way back when Wilbur collected the fertilizer in his home well before starting on his adventure...so a huge amount of space to "back up to" if I cannot finesse my way around the mysterious disappearance of my needed item! Grrrrrrr. {Spoiler}Ivo and Wilbur are confronting the orc at the airship. According to the walkthrough, I need to attach the rope to the overhead beam & use it to move the cargo....but the rope, which USED to be in my inventory, is now missing from it, even though I havent used it anywhere. Sigh. Tomorrow I guess I'll try acting "as if" I already deployed it to the necessary spot & see if things will progress ok from there anyhow. Not up to facing the disappointment tonight if that should fail!
