Who Has The Fish?
• There are five houses that are each a different color. • There is a person of a different nationality in each house. • The five owners drink a certain drink. They each smoke a certain brand of cigarettes and also have a certain pet. No owner has the same pet, smokes the same brand of cigarettes, or drinks the same drink. • The question is, “Who has the fish?”
CLUES 1. The British man lives in the red house. 2. The Swedish man has a dog for a pet. 3. The Danish man drinks tea. 4. The green house is to the left of the white house. 5. The owner of the green house drinks coffee. 6. The person that smokes Pall Mall has a bird. 7. The owner of the yellow house smokes Dunhill. 8. The person that lives in the middle house drinks milk. 9. The Norwegian lives in the first house. 10. The person that smokes Blend, lives next to the one that has a cat. 11. The person that has a horse lives next to the one that smokes Dunhill. 12. The one that smokes Bluemaster drinks beer. 13. The German smokes Prince. 14. The Norwegian lives next to a blue house. 15. The person that smokes Blend, has a neighbor that drinks water.
Of course you can look up the answer online, but try to solve it logically!
You have to form a grid to solve this riddle and deduce which person has which pet. If you're the kind of person who likes playing Clue, you'll love working this riddle out for yourself.
But if you just want to know who had the fish:{Spoiler Answer} It was the German.

pennmom , Given some of the ambiguity of the English language, is it fair to ask: - In clue #4 (green house to the left of white) - Does that mean to the left as I look at them, or as the white house occupant looks out his front door?
- Also in clue #4, does "left" mean "immediate left" or just "somewhere to the left" (or should we just treat it as if either applied)?

SynthpopAddict , Maybe this "starter" clue will help you begin solving this one: {Spoiler}Consider the 5 houses in a row, and try to fill in what you know of each house (clues 9, 14, 8, 4, 5, 1). You should be able to deduce that the green house is in one of 2 positions. If you assume the "right-er" one, you should easily be able to fill in the colors of each house and from the other clues, get to a valid answer for who owns the fish. Unfortunately, if I assume the "left-er" house for green, I (so far!) get nowhere, nor can I figure out a reason the left-er house cannot be green (sigh). So, so far I can get "an" answer, but I cant prove it is "the" answer!

Thanks lurkercat , but as I'm currently busy with writing a walkthrough for Cursed House 9 and I've also been told I will get a beta testing project within a few days, I already gave up and found the riddle answer online. If you've managed to crack it, congratulations because while I don't necessarily believe everything the internet says, apparently not a lot of people can do this one! I was getting lost with the "left of the white house" clue too because I interpreted that in multiple ways as you do, which was leading to random guessing on my part, which one should never have to do in a logic puzzle. I don't want to ruin it, but it turns out what that meant was immediately to the left of the white house if you were standing across the street and looking at all 5 houses.

After going back and looking at the spoiler posted for the murder in the farmer's field mystery near the end of page 2, I find that solution highly implausible. If the killer was in a wheelchair and it had snowed heavily, either the wheelchair would have bogged down in the snow so the perpetrator wouldn't have been able to get very far, and the wheel ruts would have been much deeper than "faint grooves" as all the user's weight plus the chair's weight is transferred to the ground only through the wheels. (I'm not very familiar with snowstorms, but during the storms which hit Texas last month we got a bit over 6 inches of snow in one day where I live and everyone and their dogs were sinking in the snow just trying to walk in it...during the lighter snowfall we got in January which was also a lot wetter than the dry powder we got in February, we were all still sinking in that slush too.) If the murderer had done his deed before it started to snow heavily, then that would explain the wheel ruts being shallower, but the hiking boot print would have been covered by the new snow. Also, why are there no footprints or other evidence of the farmer having been out in his field to find the body, unless that was just left out of the original story?
P.S. - I'm waiting for lurkercat to post her solution to the fish riddle because I'm willing to bet she got it!

Aww, gee SynthpopAddict, I thought my field explanation was way more plausible than my second choice as culprit, 'cause my imagination wasnt fertile enough to construct an adequate story for that one, which was {Spoiler} Seems like the only possible culprit was the snow plow driver, 'cause he's the only one that could easily toss the body into the field without leaving other tracks. But I couldnt come up with an explanation for the marks that were there...other than to follow up my theory with the sand truck driver driving behind him who spit out a rock that actually finished off the victim, but again, the rest of the back story was just downright implausible...unlike my perfectly logical explanation of Zeke! I'm sure of my answer to the fish story, but refuse to "accept" it till I figure out why the alternative path that does not place an "immediate" into the "green house is to left of white" can be proven to be impossible...and like you, I wound up with way too many alternatives on that path (at least 6, though probably expanding to many more) to make it seem like there was a fruitful path to eliminating it without a ton of track down on each of those cases. Still looking for a more efficient method for dispensing with that alternative!

Hey pennmom, you never did tell us the answer to the Murder in the Cornfield mystery! Although SynthpopAddict took exception to my theory about Zeke, I didnt take it personal since, being from a snow-deprived state, she wouldnt know how much easier narrow tracks (like wheelchair tires) get filled in faster and more completely than bigger tracks (as left by the boot). The smallest amount of drifting causes those narrow tracks to fill in, along with the narrower sidewalls of the track themselves being more prone to collapse, while with the same drifts, the boot mark would have its outer edges blurred out a bit but its main body left intact. Nonetheless, she did have a good point about how hard Zeke would have found it to maneuver his wheelchair that far out into the snow, 'cause he's just such a durn lazy fool all the time and unlikely to spend time doing much of anything. So, what is the "real" answer to the puzzle if old Zeke didnt do it??

pennmom, You're kidding, right?? The answer couldnt possibly be the ridiculous story I made up!! Sniffing Flower
Ah, I see why I missed your answer - we dont get any indication when you change an entry vs make a new one. I'll have to keep that in mind.

How do I add a comment in the white space bar? After I type in something, what do I click on? Ok, I feel like a genius. After finishing the puzzle and arriving at a conclusion, I checked my work online. I got everything correct, including the answer. I wrote everything out on a piece of computer paper; it’s actually just pure logic without any tricks. It really involves just working it out, cross-referencing as you go. Now off to the next puzzle! Thanks pennmom, for the neuron charge!

I've only just discovered this thread, so here goes my first attempt at an answer! Aha! Who Has the Fish?I've just worked it out and only got one possible answer, but really don't want to go through it all again and check everything, so I'm just going to give my first answer and see how close I am ... {Spoiler}The GERMAN, who lives in the GREEN HOUSE, drinks COFFEE, and smokes PRINCE, has the FISH. Am I right, am I right, am I right? Hello Am I at least close? Peek-a-boo Or have I made some stupid mistake right at the beginning and couldn't be further from the correct answer if I tried?

kimtwilight69, after writing your comment in the Facebook-style comment box, simply click the return button on your keyboard and it will post it and add a new line for comments. BUT, these comments do NOT notify anyone and they do NOT count as a post for ranking-up or earning awards, etc. oioioi, I have posted the answer on the puzzle's original thread as a spoiler alert Clapping

Easy Puzzle (2.12 out of 4 on the BrainScale)Movie Night Finally! A night out without the kids! Five couples went to the movie theater, and each couple watched a movie of a different genre, shared a snack, and then returned home at a different time. Can you figure out who is husband and wife, the snack they shared, the genre they saw, and what time they came home?
Wives: Theresa, Rochelle, Nikki, Anne, and Chanice
Husbands: Danny, Sam, Max, Kevin and Rick
Snack: Popcorn, Hotdog, Pizza, Nachos, and M&Ms
Movie Genre: Comedy, Action, Horror, Sci-Fi, and Romance
Time: 8:00, 8:30, 9:00, 10:00, and 11:30
1) The couple that saw the action movie shared nachos.
2) It was almost midnight by the time Anne and Sam came home.
3) Rochelle hates sci-fi, but saw it with her husband anyways.
4) The couple that shared popcorn didn't see a horror movie or an action movie.
5) Theresa arrived at home an hour after Max and his wife.
6) The movie was so funny, Nikki almost choked on her hotdog, she was laughing so hard.
7) Danny chose not to see an action movie or sci-fi.
8) The five women were: Chanice, the one who shared a bag of M&Ms with her husband, the lady who saw the comedy, the woman that came home at 8:00 and Kevin's wife.
9) The horror movie didn't start until 8:30.
10) Max and his wife came home the earliest.
11) Theresa thought her movie went a little overboard with the explosions and gunfights.
12) Chanice, who saw the horror movie, came out of the theater petrified and her husband, who wasn't Danny, had to calm her down.
{Spoiler Answer} Theresa and Kevin - Nachos - Action - 9:00 Rochelle and Max - Popcorn - Sci-Fi -8:00 Nikki and Danny - Hotdog - Comedy - 8:30 Anne and Sam - M&Ms - Romance - 11:30 Chanice and Rick- Pizza - Horror -10:00

I used to do logic puzzles with tables as shown, but have since found it way easier to do with a single table where the rows denote each individual pairing (ie, 5 couples) and the columns represent the different categories of information (wife, snack, genre, time, husband). Columns can be in any order, but when you have a single clue like #8 which references 5 distinct pairings, I just find it easier to label the columns in the same order as the clue has them. So, with just clue 8, my table looked like WIFE
| SNACK
| GENRE
| TIME
| HUSBAND
| Chanice
|
|
|
|
|
| M&Ms
|
|
|
|
|
| Comedy
|
|
|
|
|
| 8:00
|
|
|
|
|
| Kevin
|
and then I start filling in the empty columns with info from the other clues (like clue 12 tells you Chanice's genre, clue 6 which wife saw the comedy, clue 10 which husband was at 8:00 (and with 5, what time Theresa got home). Sometimes you'll need to use clues that give you some pairing to tell you which row they belong in (eg, since Annie & Sam are a pair, they cannot go in any row that has a different wife or husband, etc. Anyhow, proceeding this way, you readily wind up with
{THE ANSWER} WIFE
| SNACK
| GENRE
| TIME
| HUSBAND
| Chanice
| pizza
| horror
| 10:00
| Rick
| Anne
| M&Ms
| romance
| 11:30
| Sam
| Nikki
| hot dog
| comedy
| 8:30
| Danny
| Rochelle
| popcorn
| sci fi
| 8:00
| Max
| Theresa
| nachos
| action
| 9:00
| Kevin

I got the same answer as lurkercat. I don't know whether it's because I did the fish one late last night when I should've been going to bed, and just did the couples one in the morning when I was awake and bright eyed and bushy tailed, but I found this one much easier than the fish one. I used a grid for both, so same method, but this one seemed to have more direct clues, and thus was easier. Now I'm ready for the next one!

lurkercat , SynthpopAddict , kimtwilight69 , oioioi , Let's move on to a Harder Puzzle (3 out of 4 on the BrainScale) This past weekend, Dr. Riddler invited a group of friends to a party of puzzles and games. During the night, Dr. Riddler presented a "special riddle" to his guests. Whoever figured it out fastest would win a great prize!
The six guests who attended were Calvin Peterson, Florence Oak, David Gardner, Lester Page, Joel Pastor, and Veronica Andrews. After a lavish dinner and a few more hours of puzzle fun, Dr. Riddler began to announce the name of the person who figured out the "special riddle:"
"OK now everyone...!"
"The winner of..."
"'The Hardest Riddle Ever' Event..."
But before the good doctor could congratulate the winner, a loud noise from outside interrupted him. However, everyone knew who had won.
Who won and how do you know?
{Spoiler Answer} Florence Oak won.
The first letter of each word in a line of Dr. Riddler's speech spells out the numbers One, Two, and Three.
The next number being Four means that Florence Oak is the only person who could've won.
His last line would have been: Florence Oak: Ultimate Riddler!

{Spoiler}I think it's Veronica Andrews because at least one letter of her name appears in every word of the quotes.

I like SynthpopAddict 's answer, but I think by that logic Calvin Peterson seems to fit for the same reason (and neither has all letters of their name appearing in the quote (eg, no "c")
My more simplistic & sillier guess would have been that Lester Page won ("page one")

Ok, so how about this: I dont know who won, but the way each of the participants did is because {How They Knew} The loud noise outside was sparked by one of those ground-based fireworks displays where the display was of the winner's name. It was nighttime (so the display would show) 'cause the clue says that at the beginning. And anyhow, it was several hours after dinner was finished and that would give the host more than enough time to set up the display.
My only other guess would be it was Florence Oak because the loud noise was a tree falling outside & the tree was an oak....but then the chances of 6 people being able to recognize a tree as an oak is probably close to miniscule
