>> pennmom: so what is your conclusion? My "conclusion" is there is no way at all for ME to know the winner, but all the others knew because of the 1st paragraph in my latest spoiler (ie, how they knew & why I dont). If there is a different answer, I'm eager to hear what it might be. Surely someone else has a guess??
(Of course another way for all the others to "know" was 'cause after figuring out the answer to the riddle, the person who got it correct had gone around to everyone else saying (out loud & in public) "Ha ha,I got the answer to the riddle. Did you?" and everyone else was honest & admitted "No". But then that would spoil all the mystery, so I'm not proposing that as the answer!)

Whoops, duh, I just realized the real answer is {Spoiler} The winner is ME, 'cause I guessed the answer to the riddle (which was "who won?"!! Er, but then I dont know how the "others" all knew the winner of the riddle, so that can't be it! Oooohhh the others knew 'cause the fireworks display said "lurkercat". !
P.S. I just noticed my frog "post counter" symbol jumps from side to side as I make posts. How cute!!

lurkercat, they do that on alternating posts so the profiles don't interfere with each other, it took me 3 months to notice it!

Aw pennmom , take pity on us & tell us the answer, since clearly we'll never be able to guess it on our own! P.S. I did of course recognize the error in my latest guess that SynthpopAddict was too kind to mention, though (s)he always catches my flaws in logic, that it could not have been "ME" since I dont know Dr. Riddler (and more important) he doesnt know me so could not have set up his display to show "lurkercat". That leaves me stuck with the lame answer that everyone knew the winner because he or she went around taunting everyone else with his or her success, which is hardly satisfying..

Oh, and while waiting on you to take pity on us, I'll toss in the following easy riddle so we can all go back to thinking we are smart enough to solve these things: Five hundred begins it, five hundred ends it, and five in the middle is seen. The first of all letters and first of all numbers now take their place inbetween. What is it? P.S. If you want a little hint {SPOILER a little hint}This riddle, oddly enough, has a tenuous connection to Dr. Riddler's conundrum

I'm not smart enough to do that one either lurkercat, BTW I'm female. If I was simply going to be brain-dead and take it literally: {Spoiler}500A51500 Sorry my brain really is fried after a couple of days playing Briquid, which is a rare game I don't think I'll finish.

SynthpopAddict , You are actually much closer to the answer than you think! I've been following the thread of you guys who are doing Briquid so downloaded it, but havent had a chance to play it yet. If I work it right, I should get to only the "easy" puzzles in the demo (seems like 15 is about the 1st to get grumbles in the thread), which will make me feel smart!

Sorry SynthpopAddict , still wrong, but I'd love to know your logic in getting there, 'cause I know it must have some rationale, but I cant figure out what it is. If you want another hint (probably not terribly helpful, but it would be if you knew the answer!), here is one. I only have 1 clue available after this one, though, and that would probably make it way too easy for you. {Spoiler}Not all cultures nor all times see things in quite the same way. And pennmom , please, please tell us the answer to the Dr. Riddler question. I thought I had a great answer earlier today, but it got derailed by the fact that Florence Oak in in the guest list! Shoot, and it was so good otherwise!

lurkercat, I was pretty much taking the riddle literally. Did you mean Roman numerals in the 2nd clue? I'd have to look up my Roman numerals on Wikipedia to "translate"... I'm guessing the riddle doesn't just mean 5 characters long then. Guess I'm not smart enough for these things either. ;)

Very good SynthpopAddict! See, I told you you could do it. I have a friend named David who loves puzzles & I gave him this one right after I'd read it somewhere. He didnt get it and somehow didnt think it was nearly as cool as I did, considering its appropriateness! Oh well, guess there is no accounting for people's taste!

This one is easier, a 1.52 (out of 4 BrainScales)
My name is Carlie Hansen, and I am renowned throughout all of England for my detective skills. I have solved many murders, and I have just dealt with my most interesting and challenging case yet.
I was called down to the Mason estate to investigate the murder of Baron Emile Mason, a 54-year-old exceedingly rich man who had been discovered, shot in the back of the head, a month before I was asked to investigate. All the members of the were adamant that a man named Henri Lyman was the culprit. "He hated Emile; Henri was poor, whilst Emile just kept getting richer. He would've happily done away with Emile," were the words of Rose Mason, Emile's niece.
I visited the building where Emile had been found. It was such a picturesque building, with its cream walls, butter-yellow front door, honeysuckle and neatly pointed roof, it was very strange to think of it as a scene of a brutal murder.
Being a tall woman, I banged my head on the low, flat ceiling as soon as I walked in the door. The blue carpet was stained with blood. It sent a shiver down my spine.
I came home that night, feeling confused and suspicious. I had asked the relatives how Emile had amassed his fortune, but they all clammed up. I had decided not to push them further and left early.
Later that week, I asked my sister Lilie, who lives in the same town as the Masons, how Emile had become so rich. Her voice immediately died down to a whisper. "Officially, he's supposed to have been the owner of an insurance company. Unofficially, everyone knows he was actually a cocaine smuggler and a miser. I think Henri was after his stash. Anyway... I gotta go, Carlie. Bye."
Interesting! I searched every inch of the estate, but I couldn't find any traces of cocaine, and the relatives were constantly pleading that Emile was just a rich business owner. It was frustrating work, and I was wondering whether it was just a tall tale, until I heard on the news that Henri Lyman was in court, charged with possessing Class A drugs.
After another few months of digging (this was a very long case!) I became firmly convinced that Henri had killed Emile after Emile refused to reveal the whereabouts of his cocaine stash. I had witness statements, CCTV- enough to take to court, except for one thing. Proof of the cocaine stash. Without that, my case would fall apart.
Then it hit me, in a flash. I had searched every inch of the buildings. But there was one detail that seemed very fishy. There was one thing that didn't add up. And I was convinced that I had discovered the whereabouts of Emile Mason's cocaine stash.
Where was Emile's drug stash hidden?
{Spoiler HINT} Hint Read it again, slowly. {Spoiler Answer} Answer The little building where Emile was killed had a pointed roof, but the ceiling inside was flat. That must have meant there was a hidden attic! Sure enough, I found Emile's fortune in cocaine there. It appears that Emile had been going to his cocaine stash, when he was approached by Henri and shot when Emile didn't give Henri the whereabouts of his drugs.
(Carlie Hansen's next exciting case will appear soon!)

The attic underneath the pointed roof? If the ceiling was so low a woman banged her head on it coming into the house, that's abnormally low.

Hmmmm, SynthpopAddict, if stash was where you suggested & Carlie had thoroughly searched the estate (& assuming Henri had not taken it), shouldnt Carlie have found it since {Spoiler}most attics have an access point from the house & Carlie should have checked there as part of her exhaustive search? I suppose if the ceiling was low it could have been that it was a dropped ceiling and, if hidden there would be "under the attic floor", but then if Carlie is such a hot-shot detective, shouldnt she have noted the dropped ceiling & looked there too??

Good point lurkercat, but this could also be possible? {Spoiler}There was a false floor/hidden compartment built in between the attic and ceiling which was hiding the stash. Even with a dropped ceiling, it shouldn't have been so low that Carlie hit her head on it coming in through a door. Perhaps she didn't check everywhere for a secret latch or mechanism to open the compartment. It's also possible Henri found the compartment after killing Emile and made off with the drugs.

Yup, SynthpopAddict , that's all I can think of too, if Henri did not have it. pennmom is just taunting us by not pronouncing it correct (or by telling us the puzzle has such a low "challenge" rating, in case there is some other suitable answer beyond out meager imaginations!).
Odd that if Emile had CCTV, as Carlie mentions later, that there was apparently no video of Emile getting shot or of Henri entering the building. And if we assume there are also no videos of Emile stashing his cocaine, it must be in some area of the estate not covered by the cameras. Seems pretty lame, though.

Duh ok, my last and final offer: Henri had the cocaine when he was arrested by the cops for Class A drugs. Though normally there would be no way to prove the drugs came from Emile, in a massive lapse of common sense, Emile's fingerprints were all over the plastic pouches of cocaine because he had foolishly handled them without gloves on (a drastic and stupid error for a drug kingpin)!
Note I have deliberately ignored another possibility - that the drugs were hidden under the (false) floor of Emile's home (ie, hitting one's head on the ceiling could mean ceiling is too low, or that the floor is too high!). That cannot be, since it would have required corresponding changes to the outside entry way and to other floors in the estate (or odd steps into/out of that specific room).
I have also rejected the concept that Emile was a dwarf (another possible reason for a small distance between floor and ceiling) because I can't figure out any reason there would then be a hiding place he could access that super sleuth Carlie would not find.
Ok, please tell us the answer, 'cause now I am totally out of ridiculous attempts at a solution!
